How to Turn a Wood Platter Part 1 of 2

  • I demonstrate woodturning a wood platter on a lathe. I mount the blank initially using a woodworm screw so I can finish the bottom. Because of the punky wood I have to switch to a faceplate. I show how to use a shop made tool to cut a dovetail recess on the bottom for chucking to finish the top.

    Wow... a good thing that this plate did not split in your face. Thanks for sharing.

    Spalted wood makes for some nice feature but it can also come with a heavy price. Glad it didn't come apart on you while turning. Nice video and lots of good tips, thanks!

    Sorry about the punkyness. Thanks for the hint about parrafin wax on the threads. Sounds much better than getting the channel locks out. Good to hear you mention two of my other favorite turners - Mark Silllay (I drove from Pensacola to Gainesville, GA just to see make a finial) and Cap'n Eddie who's FINALLY getting back on his feet.

      +Kenny Boothe Mark is the best. I think that log reached its full potential as a stool top. I have one more 2" thick disk from that log that I think will survive as a stool seat.

      +Kenny Boothe I am sorry we did not get a chance to meet. I had to miss that meeting as I was in Fort Worth that week.

    Hi, Mike:The Oneway center point extraction tool is intended to be used as a knock-out bar, not a drift. The thick part on the end is a counterweight and there is no need to beat on the end of it with a hammer. Toss it down the bore and let the mass of the counterweight provide the extraction force. It may take 5 or 10 repetitions if the point has not been removed recently, but it has always worked for me on all three of my live centers.Take careBob

      Good to know it should work if you hit 5 - 10 times. Maybe because I did not remove mine much it froze. I will try it again.
      When are you getting back to video making? Miss seeing new videos from you.

    That wood would make some nice pen or knife blanks.

    I'd love to see a close up of the shaving/sanding shroud you have made on the back of the lathe.

    Mike, would CA glue also work as a wood hardener, to help stabilize the recess? I am new to turning, and plan to use spalted alder for my first platter (not as punky as your wood in the video, but I believe in belt & suspenders approach.)

      If the recess needs hardening I would not use a recess. I would not rely on CA to have enough penetration. If the wood is that punky I would not turn it.

    i came here to see how to make a platter and got distracted by looking at your nice lathe. how much was it 4000 to 5000

      The new model 3520c is about $4500. My 3520b was about $2600. Prices go up for new equipment but also quality used. My lathe could sell used for more than I paid for it new. Quality pays.

    What do you use to clean the brush that you used to apply the wood hardener? I use it myself with punky spalted wood but can't ever seen to clean the brush well.

      I rarely use wood hardner, When I do it is the Minwax. I use throw a way brushes as cleaning seems to much work for the benefit.

      I'd come to the same conclusion, just wondered if there was some sort of miracle product that cleans those brushes!

    May be a stupid question, but what size bit did you use?

      +Todd Halleman In my case I use a 5/16" per Teknatool chuck instructions. Other manufacturers woodworm screw may be different.

    mike if you could help me I would really appreciate it,,,,i have pictures but don't know about putting them on here,,,i glued up some maple boards..all were 3 inches thick but needless to say when you glue them up you have high and low spots on the front and back which I got them all level..front and back..but my trouble is when I do a pulling cut to try and shape the platter..I cant get one continuous sweep to level it out and start forming the platter...I even used carbide tools thinking my bowl gouges might be sharpened incorrectly..still getting the high and low as I start sweeping....the platter is 14 inches by 3....

    Why does it seem to bother me more than you that the platter split? Doesn't make any sense!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe because I was closer and therefore more thankful I was not hurt?

    • @markharding6582
      @markharding6582 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense - 60/40. 60% glad and 40% bothered. For me it is 100/100. 100% glad you did not get hurt and 100% bothered that the wood split on you. Oh well, that's wood for you.
