Idk if you've read anything by Rick Riordan, but honestly he is pulling a lot of weight in queer representation for children's books. While I believe he stumbles with Nico, Apollo and a his relationships, Emmie and Jo, and Magnus and Alex (love of my life) all show the effort he puts into showing kids characters that are actually like them. If you've heard his "origin story", he wrote a bunch of kids with adhd/dyslexia to male his son feel better about his diagnosis, and kind of ran with the idea of displaying all sorts of kids as heroes.
Parents : kids should not be exposed to the LGBT+ it's not right Also parents : it's okay for kids to watch movies where there's a "kissing/sexual" scene.
Parents: No! I don't want a gay Elsa! That's not ok for our kids to see! Also Parents: Hmm... okay, so she fell in love with a bee? Yep! That's a perfect thing for my kid to show all their friends!
Also stricter parents: you can’t watch sex scenes, or then you’ll want to go out and screw around like a pervert. Kids: *stigmatized and sexualized* wow
Or like parents always wanna take their kids to see these hyper-violent PG-13/R rated films but if someone even mentions they’re gay, then suddenly it’s inappropriate
"Also parents : it's okay for kids to watch movies where there's a "kissing/sexual" scene." ====> I don't know what kind of parent you're talking about ... normal parents don't make their kids watch sex scenes . you should rethink your vision of what parents really do . don't believe everything you read online :) or find yourself better parents i dont know
200 percent worth the watch. Cole doesn't show up till season 2, Jospheine is only in a couple episodes of season one, but it's just the most lovely and wholesome show over all and everyone in it Is a delight except for fucking Billy Andrews.
People were really exaggerating the "grittiness" of this show. Yes, it does acknowledge some darker subject matter, but only because that's more reflective of reality. Compared to the kind of shows I usually watch, Anne with an "E" is one of the most unapologetically nice shows I've seen, and I'm SO impressed with the gay representation. More of this please!
I generally agree about the exaggeration, the grittiness shown is appropriate given the time period, it's not like people had easy lives in the 19th century...I mean just as an example around 1 in 5 children died before reaching the age of 5.
I think that people were calling this snow gritty in comparison to the previous adaptation, which was a huge cultural phenomenon in Canada (and even to this day), but the old mini-series did kind of "sterilize" the period and made everything seem nice and fluffy. It's interesting that the old show reflected the optimism of the late 80's - early 90's, while Anne with an E is more suitable for our times.
It's gritty for an Anne of Green Gables adaptation, lol, which is a very low standard, seeing as how most of the adaptations are quite fluffy and sanitized. But the original material was in fact darker than people realize.
Holy shit, I have to watch this now. I was practically bawling at just that little piece of the scene between the boy and the old woman. Ahhh, so beautiful!!
It’s originally from the CBC not Netflix sorry I just really wanted to say something. The CBC rarely gets credit for the shows they create and it’s not the best for them. Ok sorry that’s all.
I was beyond impressed by Anne with an E’s representation of gay characters! They fleshed them out BEFORE telling the audience they’re gay. It wasn’t a personality trait, it was just part of who they were! Cole, the tragic artist with a poor, abusive family. Josephine, the rich independent woman with progressive views, i absolutely adored it! Cole has to be one of my favorite characters from the show. But man is Gilbert a sight for sore eyes 😍😍
Mr Phillip the guy who creeps on an underaged girl student ans grooms her so he can social climb later and abusive to his students. And then you see him struggle with a male student and HATE him for being more himself than he is.
You should totally take a look at Andi Mack, it is a Disney Channel show but it is so amazing. It has queer characters but it is also deals with multiple other hardcore issues and handles them beautifully.
Yes, definitely! But i would say do a video about them after the end of S3 because the queer storyline may progress in a positive or negative way. So far it pretty positive but I know certain events may occur (trying to be vague) that will affect your viewpoint overall :)
@@the_jinx4677 (Potential Spoilers for Season 3 based on set leaks) . . . . . . . I agree but in future episodes they may be a potential coming out scene that Cyrus has with his parents during a Jewish funeral. Now this may be pure speculation at this point because it is not confirmed yet, but I would love to see how Rowan analyzes that scene because that would be quite different from the typical coming out narrative told on tv. So far the coming out journey has been quite standard (except for the fact it is airing on Disney Channel) and is definitely aimed at teaching tolerance to straight kids which is not inherently a bad thing. However they are hinting towards a queer relationship between Cyrus and TJ which would be HUGE in children's tv but I'm not sure yet if it is going to be officially cannon or not. If it is not cannon by the end of S3, then the storyline might be classified as queer-baiting. If they not allowed to show the same affection as the straight couples, then it not a 100% win for queer representation in children's media. So i feel like it too soon to know right now but I hope Rowan keep's an eye out for it.
@@somethingsomethingx2the whole plot description where Cyrus might be coming out to his parents with the help of TJ I believe is fake, apparently the IMDB plot description aren't actually correct(if they are what you are talking about ), which is quite sad. According to Josh and Luke, they weren't disappointed with the finale, so I would think that at least SOMETHING happened in the finale, even if it doesn't become canon by that point I think that it has been an amazing stride by Disney towards more inclusion and I am really happy with what it has achieved so far. If TJ and Cyrus do become canon than I really do hope that Rowan does talk about it because, it may not be incredibly unique but it is Disney Channel which is incredible!
@@the_jinx4677 I am actually referring to the episode titles that came out couple days ago for episode 11 titled "One In A Minyan" which refers to 10 people required for a Jewish ceremony, this case it a funeral. Both actors who played Cyrus's parents were spotted on set based on casting calls so that why the speculation arose online. I have no idea if that theory of cyrus coming out is accurate but we will see in a couple weeks. Personally, I am hesitant to go off the actors statements because in the past actors on tv shows have implied similar things but then it gets edited out in post production. Disney has done this with this show to delay the Cyrus' coming out scene from S1 to S2. So I am cautiously optimistic that it becomes canon and I am curious see what the broader reaction will be online. Either way Andi Mack has broken new ground in children's media and has allowed for more LGBT rep in the new High school musical series on Disney +. They will be two lesbian moms and a potential young queer character (not sure if this fully confirmed yet) so I hope the inter-generational lessons incorporated like in Anne with an E. While I am proud of Anne with an E for being wholesome, I think it is a bigger statement that family companies like Disney finally recognize their queer fanbase.
The bit where you realise Mr. Phillips is gay, when you realise just how much it's hurting him, nearly made me cry. I'm still doing fierce battle with internalised transphobia, and I have to try so hard not to take it out on the other two trans people in my life, one of whom is a younger student in my school who is seriously in need of a positive role model. I struggle with the pressure to always be positive about my identity. I sometimes wish I just had the time and opportunity to wallow in self pity.
@@Me-vn3gz I am! I got to the next level of education and now most of my friends are trans, because we're magnets. I struggle with it sometimes but it's not as bad.
I get what ur saying but mr Phillips is a shitty person and there’s no excuse for how he treats his students Good luck tho I hope youre doing better ♡︎
I haven't seen this show but that coming out scene... I understand. That's one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I was crying so much too. It really is beautiful.
I saw gifs of Cole coming out to Anne on tumblr but I had no idea that this show was this gay. I liked the clips of the party scene and that coming out to Aunt Josephine scene was beyond beautiful. Also, I do really like the video on one specific topic.
Mani Sefas-Loos the target demographic are children, yes, but i personally watch it and enjoy it and i’m 18 years old. So yeah, might be for children but the issues they handle and how they handle them makes it for adults too
As a young lesbian, I can say that seeing gay characters in a show kind of aimed at me makes me really happy! Whenever I see representation in the media makes me feel less alone, and like I’m normal. Also you aren’t the only one who cried during that coming out scene!!! Gosh, I just loved that whole party scene. When I’m an adult who has her own house, you better believe I’m throwing a big queer party just like that... a bit more modern though. Hey, if you’re reading this, please go watch Anne with an E! It’s not just good for the representation, it’s got a great story and it’s definitely worth your time!
Oh you must! I was so happy when Rowan talked about the episode of Jo's party .. that's my favorite episode and I've watched it so many times bc of how touching and beautiful it is. Rowan describes so eloquently about how much representation matters ❤️
YES!! I second this!!! Maybe after the third season, though, so she can talk about the new greatness we will get between Elena and her non-binary partner.
PREACH! Anne with an E is amazing! i loved it so much i couldn´t believe it was a retelling haha i watched it with my boyfriend and by myself and i loved every second and every episode as it made me cry with sorrow and happiness. It felt real and it felt full of heart. Totally recommended!
I haven’t watched Anne with an E but when I saw the boy coming out to Aunt Josephine (what’s up with the amount of aunt Josephines in books turned Netflix shows) I started tearing up, it’s a really sweet moment. I then looked this up online and it’s insane how people viewed this as wildly inappropriate and promoting the “gay agenda” check out the reviews for the show on common sense media, the parent reviews have crazy homophobic comments, and there’s a huge difference between the kids reviews and the parents reviews. representation does matter to the kids watching it, and really their opinions matter the most when making a show.
Hi rowan, i just finished watching a show on netflix called Sex Education and i think you would enjoy it. There are multiple queer characters and almost all of the relationships are interracial. It was just released so i haven’t found many reviews for it and i would like to hear your opinions on the show
even the unicorn and the wasp ends in death for one of the characters i really liked that Donna keeps on talking about it. She says something like: "Poor character x (what was his name again?) is dead and his boyfriend can't mourn him because he has to hide his feelings. 1920 really feels like the dark ages." and she also talks about a boyfriend she had when she was young who has now a husband. season 4 is great. But doctor who allready has Captain Jack in season 1 = a kiss between the male main character of a years old really popluar beloved family show (the doctor) and another guy who is pansexual and immortal." That felt really revolutional for me
"Anne with an E" is a great show. I saw this Christmas when my grandma, sister and mother and when those topics start to emerge I thought "They don't wanna see it anymore" but surprisingly everybody loved the show, it's a great FAMILY SHOW.
That memorial/party at aunt josephines house was so beautiful, I legit would have wanted a spin off either her and gertie being young women falling in love and discovering this world of artists and creatives and people like them.... or an aunt josephine adopts every queer runaway and fosters their creativity till they flourish into the best version of themselves. basically i want an entire series of aunt jo
anne with an e is so amazing and man it deserves all the praise. I also think that the way Diana reacted as mentioned is important too because she had to confront her closed view on the world.
I really like what they did with Diana. You know at first she kin of was takin back with finding out her grandmother was gay. She struggled with loving her grandma sooo much but also trying to make sense of it bc shes been told that it is a sin by her parents. She than understands that she was being a dick and apologizes. She doubts that she will ever understand what her grandmothers relationship meant to her but she loves her grandma and doesn't really care who she loves.
I honestly love that TV show sm I love the relationships between the generations that are formed and how Anne opens other people's eyes to new things, as well as other characters doing so. Cole is so relatable and I adore him
I love this video! When I first read Anne of Green Gables I immediately fell in love with the story and wished I had read it as a child because I related so deeply to Anne, and I think part of that was that I read a lot of queerness in her character as well. The way she falls in love with Diana (read the book and tell me that wasn't love; she wanted to stay with Diana forever, writes her love letters, and is at one point found crying ofter the mere idea of Diana getting married to a man one day and abandoning her), and even later on she raises up female rolemodels like Miss Stacey and the preacher's wife (I forget her name) in a way that reads like the crushes I had on women as a child, she even puts a picture of Miss Stacey up in her room at some point. When I started watching the show I was really scared they would straightwash the material, especially when they introduced a completely unnecessary love interest for sweet, asexual Matthew, but then season two turned it all around and made me happier than I ever could have dreamed!
Honestly my only nitpick with Anne With an 'E' is that starting with that party scene... it quickly became... a little too modern? The comment on Anne's pixie cut at the party sort of took me out of it, seeing as to how it wouldn't officially be invented until (more than less) the 1950's. But then again, I guess Anne truly was "ahead by a century"! Other than that there was also a scene where Anne and the gang were going to save Ms.Stacy- they were all walking out of a store and suddenly... modern misic starts playing in the background and they walk all slow-motion-y and badass. Again, it was only one scene, but it sort of took me out of the illusion that they are in the 1900's time period. Still, I hope to see this show getting a 3rd season!
Аbout the pixie cut: actually, it was a thing before the 1950s, it wasn't fashionable, of course, but pretty widespread among kids and teenagers. Some Victorian books even recommended short hair for girls, like our modern bob or a pixie. Also, sometimes the hair was cut during an illness. I remember seeing an amazing photo of a 1890s girl in her mid to late teens, with a pixie cut and a plaid blouse worn over a corset, it was really unexpected for me. Actually, in Russia where I'm from, a pixie or a bob were also very common in the 19th century among the so-called emancipated women - the early feminists, female students and professionals.
@@qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm3093 okay, so try to compare the music that plays in that specific part with the theme song. A lot of the background music in general has a similar "feeling" to the theme song. It usually doesn't sound like rock music.
@@vgamer11 yes, exactly. I don't mean the opening song, I mean the soundtrack that plays throughout the series. This didn't sound like rock music? Maybe you should rewatch it...
My kids and I watch the loud house on Nickelodeon. In the show there is a character with 2 dads. I was so excited to see a positive depiction of an LGBTQ family in a children's show! I know that they are just side characters, but all of the main people treat them as they would every other family, there is no explanation and no need fo one. Also, it was recently revealed that one of the main girls has a crush on another girl and her entire family supports her telling her crush and pursuing a relationship.
Honestly, that was my favorite episode. It's so wonderful to see everyone breaking out of their shells. Our three babies go to the party having no idea what to expect, and they all find themselves in different ways. Anne finds her people. Cole finds himself. Diana finds a different way to view the world. That whole episode made me cry several times over, and those tears were sweet.
My daughter has a cross dressing Teddy bear. His name is Teddy, she made it very clear to anyone who calls him a she, he is a HE and he does not like being called a she. He just happens to like pretty pink dresses and so what? We decided to just agree with her and make no real notice. I think as long as we just expect it and don't make a fuss, she be more likely to except people like this in the same way.
For me I loved the differences in how Anne and Diana reacted. Anne is shown as not influenced by ‘proper’ society, and so naturally accepts this idea. Diana, having been influenced by society, struggles. This shows it is natural for children to accept queer people, and society changes them. I also love how at the party it shows queer acceptance as the norm; Diana is the outlier not Anne. It shows a beautiful queer space full of happy people having a great time
Doctor Who also had Jenny/Madam Vastra in seasons 6 to 8 who live in Victorian London and they're married. There was another Doctor Who episode set in the past with queer characters: Eaters of Light from series 10. It's set in 2nd century Scotland and the Bill, the companion at a time who is a lesbian meets some Roman soldiers some of whom are gay or bi. The story is written by Rona Munro who also wrote the Classic Who serial Survival which has intended subtext between the companion Ace and another female character. It was supposed to be more than subtext but it was all they could get away in the 80s. On and River Song mentions having at least two wives in the last episode she was in. SInce she was/is married to the Doctor it would be great if Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor mentioned that she's had a wife at some point.
Bill Potts had been converted into a Cyberman, and is dying. Her former love interest, Heather, come back and saves her with a kiss, transforming her. Heather offere to take her on an adventure through space and time, or to return her to Earth, as a human. Bill decided to travel with Heather.
Kinda spanning off Doctor Who , but in the Sarah Jane Adventure Luke was gay , in Class the main character Charlie is openly gay and has a longstanding relationship with another main character and in Torchwood Jack is pansexual and both Tosh and Ianto are bisexual
I'd love to hear you talk the film Pride (2014). It was the first uplifting story about queer people I'd seen and a bit of important Welsh and British history I'd not heard about.
I love Pride it shows the truth behind Margaret Thatcher's rule but also shows how the LGBT+ community will try their best to help others in the face of discrimination. Also, I REALLY want to visit Gay's the Word in London 😅😅
I'm currently in the education program meaning, I am studying to be a teacher. Well I'm in methods of Elementary social studies right now. And in the second chapter of my textbook, they actually were discussing how to have a culturally or just inclusive classroom. And saying how the lgbtq + Community should also be added. And within that text they were saying that so many people have been using the excuse oh well children should be protected, that children shouldn't see this, or that basically they make it to seem that children are asexual that they have no type of Attraction whatsoever before puberty. However, my textbook actually gave a very good example that whenever a child says that they have a crush on this student or that student they're actually showing their sexuality. So, when a little girl says I have a crush on a little boy or a little girl they're actually showing their sexuality. Though Within These communities they can either be told oh it's just a phase you're going to grow out of it or they're pretty much told that it's a sin and that they shouldn't think this way and instead they should think that way. But yes it's a very common thing that they think that children have no type of Attraction towards anyone at that age group. Even though that they show signs of it themselves. Now it's whether adults want to acknowledge it or not it's on that. But if you act like children even as young as four or five years old don't know or understand that they see somebody and think that they're cute or pretty or handsome is completely ignorant. Well I just thought that I would share this information because I thought this was interesting and I thought that you would perhaps think this is interesting as well.
I heard about the show orginally when I was visiting my grandmother about 3 months ago she told me it was really good but I did not think much of it but know I really wanna watch it!
That entire episode (Especially the party and the coming out scene) is one of my favorite episodes of any show simply because of this fact and how touching and embracing it was. It warms my heart every time.
Wow I had no idea about this show. I may have to check it out now! Another kids show, a Disney channel one in fact, Andi Mack has a main character. A 13 year old boy who’s gay and there has been 2 coming out scenes with his friends. I love the fact there’s gay characters in kids shows now, it would’ve helped me so much as a kid.
What I don't think a lot of people always understand and sadly this includes writers and film makers, is that for every "group" that you could represent there are infinite possibilities of what those experiences and relationships look like. It's good to see something so varied and real that still doesn't break the fourth wall in terms of what would have been realistic for the times. It is realistic that Cole would be bullied, it is realistic that Josephine and Gertrude would find people to trust. Like anywhere with anything there will be those who accept it, those who struggle but come to accept it, those who can't stand themselves because of it. I can every one of those things happening in the context of that time and place.
Yes! This! I could hardly believe my eyes as I was watching this show and realizing what they were about to do. The fact that they let Aunt Josephine be so explicit about her relationship in a period piece blew my mind. Great video! I just watched "Collette" this weekend and I'd love to hear your thoughts on that film.
Thank you for talking about one of the most underrated TV shows which is “Anne with an E”. So groundbreaking given the source material which is a story written so long ago.
Awesome video! Love this show!Just a little Canadian popping in here this is actually a CBC production not a Netflix production... and season 2 isn't on Canadian Netflix yet grrr.
I might well have to give this show a watch. As far as suggestions for other pieces of media with LGBT representation, Love, Simon may be a bit of an obvious one at present, but I just can't ignore how I felt sitting in that cinema. Crazy-Ex Girlfriend and Wynonna Earp are both also very good, although they do each have one little issue thing that just seems out of place with how well handled the representation usually is, but I'll get into those in another comment in just a minute.
So, CXG is pretty notable in that it very deliberately has characters come out as bisexual, where many TV shows seem oddly reluctant to use that term, rather having characters speak in vague generalities and allusions about their attraction to multiple genders, but there is one major character who occasionally, but consistently references being attracted to women as well as having her depicted love interests being male, and who at one point specifically mentions being not fully in one end of the kinsey scale, yet, even with the show's aforementioned representation and themes of identity and self-discovery this is never touched on further. As for Wynonna, I really don't get the impression that they would go so far as to bury their gays (with major characters at least). For one thing, with the low viewing figures and large LGBT fanbase, I doubt they could afford to. There is however an odd, seemingly very deliberate running 'joke' -for want of a better term- of putting one of the show's lesbian characters in near-death situations. Both these things are really small in the scheme of the shows as a whole, and I would still heartily recommend either one to pretty much anybody, but they did jump out as not quite fitting with the overall quality and sensitivity on display in the rest of the writing.
Thank you so much for doing this review and drawing attention to Anne with an E. 😍 With this particular reboot, for some reason, I got the impression that Anne, herself is potentially sexually fluid/queer. I can’t remember what point exactly made me think that but I definitely do remember thinking it. I’m so glad they’ve decided to be deliberately more inclusive through this episode. ☺️ Also, Diana’s face when the penny drops.... 😆😂
Beautiful coming out scenes or even just queer support/togetherness scenes like Holt and Rosa in Brooklyn 99 always hit me so hard. It's such a powerful interaction to witness, as a trans teacher I feel this responsibility to be out and proud but I'm still scared of being professionally and personally punished, hopefully one day I'll be in a more supportive school (or maybe have the strength to try in my current school) and I can be that person for a student or other teacher.
Anne With an E is one of my favorite shows currently. I really loved the episode that you are referring to. It was so great to see an elderly woman that is celebrating the wonderful life that she has had with her partner. The show is truly wonderful!!!
I didn‘t even watch the show and just got to the part where you showed the boy coming out and... I‘m having trouble seeing my keyboard through tears...
Living with a homophobic fam. My mum was disgusted with the episode said that it was everything that the original author (of the book) was against. She said it was obvious propaganda and pandering and the whole family stopped watching the show. She wrote online to a christian/catholic blog warning them that the show targets good christian kids with gay propaganda.
love anne with an e!! not sure if you’ve seen it but there is a norwegian teen show skam (which now has its italian, american, french, german, dutch, spanish and belgian reboots) that has one whole season dedicated to a young gay boy and his first boyfriend
I don’t know if you’ve heard of it but there’s a show on Disney Channel called Andi Mack that also has a Gay character in it. He became the first character to have an official coming out scene and to say the words “I’m Gay” on the channel ☺️♥️
You should check out the show Bomb Girls. Its a canadian historical drama about the women who worked in the bomb factories during WWII. One of the main characters is a lesbian and its handled really well.
Any requests/recommendations? (I have a video coming up about how Elizabeth Swann is one of the most under-appreciated characters in film franchise history lol)
@@HeyRowanEllis Could you maybe do a video on how bisexuality is represented in media? I would really love that. And I think there are interesting (and, ugh, troubling) things that fall under the subject - like how "bisexual" as a label isn't used very often, how if a character is more likely to say "i am now gay" or "i am now straight" if they suddenly change dating preferences than ever bring up bisexuality. Oh! And then there is also the Promiscuous Evil Bisexual trope. And how male bisexuality is almost invisible.
Oml that coming out scene had me bawling, I think I might have to watch the show. Have you seen The Favourite yet? I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I watched it. I love how its a very queer film and the plot points depend on the characters' being queer but it's not a romance. Its also really damn funny!
If you haven’t seen it yet in addition to other amazing rep the Disney channel show Andi Mack as a main character named Cyrus who is an openly openly gay Jewish kid who has started to develop a more than friendship with a reoccurring character named tj
i cried when it was revealed that cole is gay. i'd never seen something so realistic and beautiful in a show, let alone a show suitable for all ages. amazing amazing amazing. this show is beautiful in every absolute way
4:25 Why!?!?! I came here to listen to your views on the representation not cry over a few seconds long scene😭💖😭 I love how her reaction was such a mixture of sadness(for what he'll have to endure) and fear(for what could happen to him) but also overwhelming joy and love (because he felt safe enough in her presence to be open with her, and because she knows the joy that he'll have in his life from being open with the world but more importantly himself)
I can already see many comments about the sexuality side of the show so I’m going to talk about the gender side and also how this show has helped me. Okay? Here we go! First I’m going to bring up that Anne, the main character! Wears boys clothes for a whole day, easily passes as a male in a group of boys and generally has the time of their life! I’m not saying Anne is gender queer (they probably could be though), they might just be a tomboy or just love to smash down gender norms, but it does still at least show kids that it’s totally okay to express yourself however you like, even if that means looking like another gender, they might even discover something from that. Before watching this show I thought I was straight cis guy, I tried to dress as masculinity as possible and forced myself into crushes, I was really sad. After watching this show however, I experimented with my sexuality and gender so much, I spent hours upon hours researching these things. It got very hard at times to expect myself but I couldn’t deny I was feeling happier than ever. 6 months on from that, I’ve discovered that I am Asexual/Pan-romantic and i still identify as male, just not a very masculine one. I love to wear flower crowns and flannel shirts, crop tops and cargo pants, boxers and makeup. I have a trans boyfriend now and I love him to bits and half my friends are LGBT. I’m just saying that I certainly would not be where I am today without this show and I think that much more people should watch it. (I can’t find a proper way to end this so I’m going to just leave it here) (also please feel free to correct me on anything, thanks)
If you haven't read it already, there's actually a children's book called 'George' and I really thought it carried an amazing message about being trans at a young age, but represented the subject PROPERLY so that younger generations can be properly educated about the LGBTQ community and what it stands for!
Thank you, this video made me so happy. I sort of half-watched the first couple episodes of Anne with my mom but for whatever reason didn't check out the rest. It struck me immediately as an unusually gentle and conscious show, something most adaptions do not even begin to manage at all. The original books were always compassionate and thoughtful in that way and this series seems to have grasped that (and apparently improved on it too, with the queer rep). Thanks Rowan.
The ending of Voltron: legendary defenders; has a gay wedding/kiss, it's not the best representation (the characters don't have a conversation during the entire show and one of the characters doesn't have a name) but it exists.
0ElaEnchanted0 There is a gay character in Voltron leader and the pilot of the black lion Shiro yes we only see him in romantic relationship in flashbacks or in flash forwards but he is a main character whom is responsible for a resistance group in a war. Being proactive and a responsible mentor is a good quality it would be weird if his life was focused on his love life during the war
@@oof-rr5nf Though their relationship is alluded to throughout the series it does kinda suck that they felt they had to keep a lid on it until the very last episode...
I'm glad you mentioned voltron and didn't mention Klance, because literally fans will swear that they are gay but when others actually watch it, they're disappointed because it's not even canon or hinted.
Holy crap I've never seen that show, ever, and I teared up a bit seeing that coming out scene. She's still right about finding and bonding with those trusted people.
I knew this was a great display of LGBTQ but your video made me realise I’d missed something on mr Philips. I think there’s a scene where Diana confronts her parents about this? I can’t remember. I thought Anne was gay to but she’s fine as a straight supporter who doesn’t need to marry. Even if she ends up with Gilbert
Yes another place to talk about how much I love Steven Universe!!! Watch it’s fun you don’t have to interact with the fandom just try it’s really rewarding.
Yessss to the impact of having multiple characters representing identities. Representation is important, yes, but when a story only writes one character of a certain identity, not only does the story run the risk of tokenizing, it also creates a scenario where that character has to be all things to all people. Anyway this video is lovely
I believe one of the staff writers/producers on the show came out to the showrunner Moira Walley Beckett, and was instrumental in writing Cole's and Aunt Jo's storylines for season 2.
*i fucking cried during the episode, especially when Aunt Joe was having her moment with Cole. CRIED. I felt every single word she said- it’s the first time I’ve ever had someone say that to me, or that’s really how it felt. As someone who is deep in the closet, this show was the closest thing I’ve had to a sort of reassurance; it’s my comfort, my escapism from my realty. The representation meant everything to me, and I just really needed to say it.*
I would recommend "The War That Saved My Life" and "The War I Finally Won" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. The main adult character (they are children's books, set during WW2 in England) is a mathematician and the surviving partner of a lesbian couple, though it is not explicitly stated.
I haven't watched Anne with an E because of its reputation as "the gritty reboot", but I really want to check it out now. I grew up on PEI so Anne of Green Gables is a combination of really important to me and a source of irritation as something we have to keep telling tourists is fictional. My brother used to get comps for Anne and Gilbert the musical through work, so I've seen it a bunch of times; in my favourite version, even though the text doesn't change, the actresses who play Marilla and Rachel Lynde really leaned in to the whole queer widow/spinster thing and it was amazing! Anne has so much potential for a queer reading and I'm happy to see that they're including some stuff in the new series.
I’m a bit late, but this show is the best! Seen it so many times, and the Aunt Josephine party episode is one of my top favorites. So beautiful in cinematography and storyline!
If you ask me I don't think I count Aunt Josephine as a bury your gays trope. Because if you think about it, a bury your gays trope is one where an LGBTQA character dies or looses their partner, whereas Aunt Josephine, albiet has lost her wife, she is an old lady and it's heavily inplied they've lived for many years happily together gor many years and Gertrude has most like died of old age. So they did live happily ever after and were accepted by their freinds.
I watched season 1 of Anne with an E (I didn't had much time to keep watchin) but now that I know about all of this representation I'm so excited to keep watching
it isn’t on yet but i think it’s due to start soon, the bbc drama gentleman jack looks like it might be really wonderful, and perhaps looking back on the older secret diaries of miss anne lister seeing how interpretations and representation has changed, i know watching those sorts of lesbian-centric bbc period mini-series from the 90s/00s they have a certain feel to them very dramatic and often quite sad and melancholy?
If you're looking for queer characters in children's entertainment, I direct you to the animated series "Steven Universe" . Unlike most cartoons here in the US who don't reveal characters to be gay until the last aired episode (usually from fear of being canceled) like Korra or Gravity Falls or Adventure Time, SU is pretty damn gay the whole way through. And it hasn't been taken off the air yet, so I encourage you to guys to check it out. Or at least some clips on TH-cam or something.
Cole's coming out scene moves me to tears no matter how many times I watch it, and that's coming from someone who seldom cries while watching media (in all my life, i can count three times). It means so much to me. I cannot begin to put it into words.
Your love for the community you are in, that we are in, fills me with so much hope. Bare minimum exceptance of our existence was never enough. We should be loved without question for our natural and beautiful diversity. Inclusivity doesn't mean not seeing and speaking about what makes us diverse it means finding beauty in the differences, considering all things non-harmful natural and celebrating it. Thanks for the hope slivers. Now back to the exhausting fight for equality!
I’m so happy you talked about this!!! I love Anne with an E and that episode is genuinely my favorite so far in the show. Not gonna lie, Cole’s coming out scene makes me cry every time I see it.
I clicked on Anne with an E purely by chance and omg I was sooooo pleasantly surprised by the storylines and representation! As soon as I heard “oh her best friend that she lived with all her life just died” I was like 👀👀👀 “no way this is a confirmed bachelorette story, I’m reading too much into it...” Then the party scene happened and I was going wild!!! 😂😂😂
My mum and I watched the series together sometimes. But to be honest, I was happy that I happened to watch this particular episode alone, because I cried so freaking much. It was unlike anything I have seen before, and it made me so happy!
loved this video and would love for you to do more like this, someone has said this in a comment already but could you look into percy jackson and rick riordan's portrayal of lgbtq+ characters. particuarly emmie and jo from 'the trials of apollo'. also magnus and definitely alex from the magnus chase series :)
The girl who plays Diana is a great actress. You can really feel her uncertainty and her parents’ influence on her.
Yh I liked Dalila bela since I was like7 bc she used to be in odd squad lol
Idk if you've read anything by Rick Riordan, but honestly he is pulling a lot of weight in queer representation for children's books. While I believe he stumbles with Nico, Apollo and a his relationships, Emmie and Jo, and Magnus and Alex (love of my life) all show the effort he puts into showing kids characters that are actually like them. If you've heard his "origin story", he wrote a bunch of kids with adhd/dyslexia to male his son feel better about his diagnosis, and kind of ran with the idea of displaying all sorts of kids as heroes.

Yes!
Parents : kids should not be exposed to the LGBT+ it's not right
Also parents : it's okay for kids to watch movies where there's a "kissing/sexual" scene.
Hecc
"Also parents : it's okay for kids to watch movies where there's a "kissing/sexual" scene."
====> I don't know what kind of parent you're talking about ... normal parents don't make their kids watch sex scenes . you should rethink your vision of what parents really do . don't believe everything you read online :) or find yourself better parents i dont know
I havent watched anne with an E I dont know the characters...I gased and nearby cried at the coming out scene. Holy shit thats a nice scene...
Honestly. Yes
It was so touching I loved it
Fresh Arche You should watch it
Watch it I highly recommend it
200 percent worth the watch.
I would say it does a good job of portraying the underbelly of the past.
Seriously. Didn't realize it was supposed to be gritty until after I binged it and was looking for discussions surrounding it.
Holy shit, I have to watch this now. I was practically bawling at just that little piece of the scene between the boy and the old woman. Ahhh, so beautiful!!
Yes please, please watch this show. You won't regret after watching.
Aunt Josephine and Cole are two of, if not THE best characters on the show.
its so amazing and i highly recommend the books too.
It’s originally from the CBC not Netflix sorry I just really wanted to say something. The CBC rarely gets credit for the shows they create and it’s not the best for them. Ok sorry that’s all.
Ikr 😩
Oof maybe thats why they canceled anne with an e
I love the show where they work in department store
The Paradise?
The CBC really do make some amazing TV shows, don’t they?
I was beyond impressed by Anne with an E’s representation of gay characters! They fleshed them out BEFORE telling the audience they’re gay. It wasn’t a personality trait, it was just part of who they were! Cole, the tragic artist with a poor, abusive family. Josephine, the rich independent woman with progressive views, i absolutely adored it! Cole has to be one of my favorite characters from the show. But man is Gilbert a sight for sore eyes 😍😍
right??!
“It wasn’t a personality trait, it was just part of who they were” kinda like… a trait?

@@the_jinx4677
I am actually referring to the episode titles that came out couple days ago for episode 11 titled "One In A Minyan" which refers to 10 people required for a Jewish ceremony, this case it a funeral.
I hope you’re doing better now ❤️

I haven't seen this show but that coming out scene... I understand. That's one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I was crying so much too. It really is beautiful.
I saw gifs of Cole coming out to Anne on tumblr but I had no idea that this show was this gay.
I liked the clips of the party scene and that coming out to Aunt Josephine scene was beyond beautiful.
Also, I do really like the video on one specific topic.
One example of queer representation on a children’s show would be Andi Mack. The character called Cyrus, came out as gay in the beginning of season 2.

I hadn't heard of Anne with an E. I can't wait to watch it. Thank you for these types of videos so few good representations for us glbt+ community.

Hi rowan, i just finished watching a show on netflix called Sex Education and i think you would enjoy it. There are multiple queer characters and almost all of the relationships are interracial. It was just released so i haven’t found many reviews for it and i would like to hear your opinions on the show
I just started ep 2 - I'm super intrigued by it atm, so excited to see where it goes!
You will definitely get hooked! I watched six episodes in one night and the last two right after my shift at work
even the unicorn and the wasp ends in death for one of the characters i really liked that Donna keeps on talking about it. She says something like: "Poor character x (what was his name again?) is dead and his boyfriend can't mourn him because he has to hide his feelings. 1920 really feels like the dark ages."
and she also talks about a boyfriend she had when she was young who has now a husband. season 4 is great. But doctor who allready has Captain Jack in season 1 = a kiss between the male main character of a years old really popluar beloved family show (the doctor) and another guy who is pansexual and immortal." That felt really revolutional for me
I also like it that Dr Who has multiple queer characters, including those from historical time periods (e.g. Jenny and Madame Vastra.
My boyfriend and I were literally crying during that show, it's so good. And I feel that it does justice to the books, while adding something fresh.
@@Tatiana_Palii wow, really? I had no idea! That's really cool!
How was it modern? It was part of the normal soundtrack. Maybe you should rewatch that part...
@@qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm3093 okay, so try to compare the music that plays in that specific part with the theme song. A lot of the background music in general has a similar "feeling" to the theme song. It usually doesn't sound like rock music.

Andi Mack is something to check out as well it's a Disney Channel original series but it has a main character name Cyrus and he's openly gay
When Diana said to Anne that Aunt Josephine lived with her "friend" until she died I was like "OH MY GOD THEY WERE ROOMMATES"
ARE WE NOT FORGETTING THE GOD THAT IS CAPTAIN JACK?

My dad told me that the reason I'm bi is because I watched too much Doctor Who. We had a great laugh. It's such a great show
Kinda spanning off Doctor Who , but in the Sarah Jane Adventure Luke was gay , in Class the main character Charlie is openly gay and has a longstanding relationship with another main character and in Torchwood Jack is pansexual and both Tosh and Ianto are bisexual
Love that film. I honestly think it might be my favourite of all time
My favourite quote from that movie is 'Were just going to Swansea to have a big lez off' I felt KNOWN
Also, Diana’s face when the penny drops....
Yaaay do more of these videos focusing on one thing!!
Any requests/recommendations?
(I have a video coming up about how Elizabeth Swann is one of the most under-appreciated characters in film franchise history lol)
Rowan Ellis
Honestly no fucking clue
You could do a video on how to get away with murder.
@@HeyRowanEllis The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix) maybe after the second season
Yes go watch Anne with an E, it's great!
god damn premiers..
but also yess anne with an e
If you haven’t seen it yet in addition to other amazing rep the Disney channel show Andi Mack as a main character named Cyrus who is an openly openly gay Jewish kid who has started to develop a more than friendship with a reoccurring character named tj
i cried when it was revealed that cole is gay. i'd never seen something so realistic and beautiful in a show, let alone a show suitable for all ages. amazing amazing amazing. this show is beautiful in every absolute way
anne with an e is my FAVE. The Netflix show is the best but I don't really like the books. And it is renewed for a season 3! #SoExcited!!
Okay that coming out scène immediately made me cry its such a beautiful moment. Such beautiful words
(I can’t find a proper way to end this so I’m going to just leave it here)
(also please feel free to correct me on anything, thanks)
Beautiful
I actually cried just at that one clip where he comes out to her - so beautiful. I'm going to have to watch the show now!
Gay wedding alert in Steven Universe too.
@@Shardok42 it was so beautiful. I teared up a little.
Don't forget Princess Bubblegum and Marceline kissing in the Adventure Times finale!
It's not canon but I feel like Anne would be pansexual. Her mindset would be if you are in love then what should it matter? Oh so romantical lol
got teary eyed at that coming out clip & I don't even watch the show! that will change soon.💕
I believe one of the staff writers/producers on the show came out to the showrunner Moira Walley Beckett, and was instrumental in writing Cole's and Aunt Jo's storylines for season 2.
ok the second aunt Josephine started talking about her "Best friend" I was like- OH SHIT SHE WAS DATING HER
*i fucking cried during the episode, especially when Aunt Joe was having her moment with Cole.
Anne with an e is my favorite show hands down, so i am super happy this video was in my recommendations
I fell in love with this episode all over again because of this video!
oh boy, wait till you see the She-Ra reboot...
I watched the second season and I had been gushing for weeks over the great representation, and finally! A video clearly expressing my views! yay!
This review makes me so happy! I've heard good things about anne with an e, and this just makes me want to check it out more
I’m a bit late, but this show is the best!
I love love love Anne with an E! It takes the already great source material and makes it even better.
Good video! I haven't seen this show, but I look forward to seeing it!
Guess what y’all.
I’m a elementary schooler...
And I’m Pansexual.
I have a girlfriend.
And I watch gay content on a daily basis.
I’M FINE.
darkness - chan what grade are you in? (If you mind me asking I'm just curious)
Desi I don’t mind you asking but I would not really be comfortable saying my grade just because of personal reasons, sorry.
darkness - chan it's fine
darkness - chan I was just thinking we were around the same age I'm 11 xD
Desi Mhm ya 😂
Why would you make me cry like this? Lovely video, thank you.
i'd love for you to talk about the representation in The Umbrella Academy
I've been thinking abkut watching Anne with an E for a while, now after seeing this I'm definitely going to watch it starting today!!!
I really want to host a party like that one day. That episode made me cry so much in the best way, it was so beautiful
My mum and I watched the series together sometimes. But to be honest, I was happy that I happened to watch this particular episode alone, because I cried so freaking much. It was unlike anything I have seen before, and it made me so happy!
Please do more reviews like this! I wouldn't have started watching the show if it wasn't for you!!!
loved this video and would love for you to do more like this, someone has said this in a comment already but could you look into percy jackson and rick riordan's portrayal of lgbtq+ characters. particuarly emmie and jo from 'the trials of apollo'. also magnus and definitely alex from the magnus chase series :)
