My daily driver is an ‘85 K5 with a built 400 sbc, Conservative 450 hp. I use a th400 with 2.74 gear ratios front/rear. My engine doesn’t start making power until 3,000 rpm, by that time you’re doing 90. 2,300 rpm does 78-76mph. 35” all terrain tires. The th400 loves it all. Excellent transmission
Shouldn't be an issue daily driving a TH400 as long as you don't mind paying for the gas (unless you also have a tall diff ratio like most cars did back in the day).
A reverse manual valve body means your shift pattern is changed to park, reverse, neutral, first, second, third, not neutral third, second, first. That's just a manual valve body
Headline: "Can you daily a th400?" Seriously? That's an absurd question. It's a normal, common transmission. Drivers of all stripes have "daily'd" them (and all the other non-OD 3-spds.) for decades without a second thought, and some of us still do.
I’m pretty sure that’s not a reverse valve body, a reverse valve body is park, reverse, neutral, 1st, 2nd and all the way back is 3rd ( drive ), that’s why is called a reverse valve body. It looks like you have a forward valve with manual shift. Nice video.
I was wondering if anyone else was going to enlighten the masses! Hopefully he's just assuming that its a reverse valve body and not that the seller or builder falsely claimed it to be, there's alot of dirty people out there so its possible they told him it was to get that extra 5-800$ for the trans! Makes me wonder if it was done properly
Gm did it from the factory up until around 1990 with the c/k dually trucks. They survived warranty period, even with insane gear ratios that would buzz the tbi peanut port 454 to death in 50,000 miles so no offense, but this is hardly video worthy info. Drag week cars run the th400 and while the cars break the trans typically isn't the weak link.
No offense but the title of the video is “what is like to drive a th400 truck” not if your able too. Not sure we’re the confusing is happening. As I say in the video I do it and enjoy it.

Honestly it was done by the previous owner. I actually put the stock steering wheel back on. It look like the grant steering wheel bolted up to the stock column.
😆 🤣 😂 Its a manual automatic, meaning there isn't a foot activated clutch mechanism and it has to be shifted thru the gears. The model in this video unfortunately isn't a reverse pattern, were this one is P,N,3,2,1 a reverse pattern is P,R,N,1,2,3. This particular modification is done to insure that the 2nd to 3rd shift isn't missed cause a catastrophic overreve during race operations.
why not a 4l80 instead of a th400? 4l80s are dummy cheap these days, works with the stock ecu has an overdrive so good fuel economy, lockup, etc and theyre basically th400's with the added overdrive gear and youd be able to run a deeper gear like 4.10's much more effectively i really cannot see what advantages a th400 has over it heck even a built 4l60 these days works pretty well in daily driver applications
@@gamefadayz4121 add a gear vendors, I know a TH400 with a gear vendors is an extremely awesome rig because of gear splitting and overdrive, would work damn well, I would never even think of running a 3 speed without one

Why would you daily a th400.
I’m with you my 89 3/4 is a daily beast and I tow garbage trucks with it no issues
Should be able to. Th400 came factory on a ton of cars and trucks. I have one in my 2010 Camaro SS. I've put 65k miles on the car since swapping.

I’ve had my truck for over 5 years with the th400 set up. No problems I love it. Way better then the 4l60e in my opinion
Th400 comes in Buick Oldsmobile and Cadillac correct? Bolts to an Chevy engine??

How is towing with it tho debating on this or a 6r80
You know you can put it in third and just drive. The TH400 will automatically shift into the different gears.
It’s full manual valve body bud.

I want to swap my locked up 5.7 with a LS into a 77 c20.

It just depends on your gearing and stall speed.

What headers did you use
Obx long tube headers

Good question
How can you get your speedo to work with this swap?
Later model 400 were built with the tone ring and setup for the electric speedo
You can also tap into ur speed sensor
One of the front speed sensors on the hub
Ecu has to be reflashed to accept the turbo 400 transmission correct?
Interesting question, I don't think it would have to be if you were to use a later model 400 with the electronic speedo
you would likely need a manual ECU
You would have it flashed with automatic parameters completely out like a manual or a manual tru k computer
You need too reflash it to a manual
