To allow for large bosses in games on Nintendo, games used the background layer to move it around rather than a series of sprites (which capped out at 5 per scanline I believe) and just programmed collision detection that moved with the background. (Basically if you came up to a single-color background, a large boss could be nearby at any time. :P) Another part of the background layer with some chips was to allow it to split it into two parts, one for the background that you're already walking on and one to move the split 'boss' background around. Now if that part of the chip malfunctions yet leaves the rest of the instructions intact, I imagine that'd make some fun glitches like this. Might be hard to duplicate this exactly.
alex_9000 I have seen this exact glitch in the yellow devil fight, but I can't remember where again. Was bullshit though with the boss being invisible.
James releasing his battle cry in that thumbnail I bet it sounds like Godzilla combined with a robot with a synthesized voice yelling "ASS" (Btw, haven't watched it yet as I'm in Canada and Amazon prime video isn't avalable here, but apparently my picture made it into the lastest AVGN episode. The 14 year old that lays deep inside me is hyped as fuck)
TGX Game Reviews What do you mean with "my picture made it in the latest avgn episode"? Did he announce some kind of raffle to get a shout out in his video?
My cousin has an absolutely wrecked copy of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition for the Sega Mega Drive, every time you turned it on you could only play it for about 10 mins before a load of what looked like hexadecimal code came on the screen still in the game font which could be edited with the joypad. All we could really get it to do was change some of the pallet colours or make sprites invisible. good times.
The Pork Wizard reminds me of one of those games I had for PS2, I think it was snk vs capcom 2, and you could edit the colours of every sprite to whatever you wanted. So you could say make ryu's gi bright blue instead of white, or whatever
Hey the Fireball weapon isn't bad in this game (original Contra it is), but for overall power it's right up there, just behind the Laser. You can hold down the button and charge it up, and release a super big fireball, works great on bosses (if you have patience).
I'm not in a situation to test this myself, but I believe that this can be replicated by lifting pin 13 of the MMC3B chip inside the cartridge. I would not be surprised if a dry solder joint wore out, causing this particular bug...
James has this distinctive face when he says "Fuck"... I just love this face. It's filled with frustration anger and madness and somehow it's so relieving to watch.
4:20 like James says this happens in every Super-C. Happened to me all the time as a child. It’s from being in the ground and often happened when you land into the corner of the ground. I’ve never seen it happen from being in the ground and hen having the scroll instantiate it though!
When i was a kid and had a famiclone the ones with yellow cartridges usually. I had this multicart from 90' And when playing Mario 1 there, and physicaly shaking the inserted cartridge in the system, it would glitch, corrupt the game in a weird way... Often it was VERY playable, instead of showing number of lives, it had weird graphical icons, and had new levels, bowsers early on, new block placements, and many other things, it was addicting af to do xD idk how that worked, but it did in a very playable way most of the time...
I just remember that story of James having a wound in his finger and it starting bleeding again while he's playing and that just sounds so fucking metal
Haha, I can relate to Mike here. Going back to early 2000's I put my wallet in a "safe place" only to remember where I put it 3 years later. That sucked cancelling credit cards, bank card, losing a few hundred dollars for three years. The upside, when I found it I got the $260 back originally lost which made me laugh and feel good at the same time.
Hurricanelive Maybe he's finally sleeping on a regular schedule? He had a long run of playing games on live streams almost every night , all night! The man is a vampire!
Invisible bosses sure does make it harder for anyone. I'm pretty that mysterious cartilage glitch probably effects the map sprites than just the game play.
soooo glad you captured the glitch where the ground's corner killed you hahaha. I specifically remember that happening to me too as a kid and was wondering if I was losing my mind haha.
I was a pretty competent gamer as a kid. I used to get thru Contra no problem. Then Super C came out. I rented it. But for some reason I couldn't even pass level 1. After seeing these glitches I feel like that was the issue I had. Especially that glitch where you die from touching the edge of a step or cliff. Makes a lot of sense 28 years later lol!
In Area 7, at the beginning part of the stage, where you’re descending on these rocky slopes, if you shoot the magenta-spawner-like creatures when they are partially onscreen and offscreen, the enemy will die but it’s still exists in plain sight and won’t hurt you.
I need to see the glitched Rocky game again. It was the best thing ever.

Remember having RC Pro AM 2 and put the cartridge a bit tilted. Just a little bit. It didn't have too much side effects, some graphics were a bit glitched but the funniest thing was the money was basically infinite. It showed some weird random data from the chr ROM instead of numbers.
Alright, gents. This might be the best video that you two have made yet but I've only been watching you guys for a few months now. Gotta go check out Rocky glitch.
My friend had a glitched Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel cartridge. I think it was the final level where you ascend the level with a jetpack or something and once you reached a certain spot in the level you would be blocked by an invisible barrier so you couldn't complete the level.
I have the same issue with forgetting where I put stuff. It can be pretty frustrating sometimes. I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years and it can be hard to keep track off it all. Not to mention I am getting closer to middle age years and have a tendency to forget silly things. Lol
TH-cam must be in another time zone right now. This was published at 1 am my time (EST) , but said the publish date was yesterday at the top. (lets the blade 1 theme confusion play in my head) The TH-cam on my console tells me what time it was published by (example: 36 mins ago) Anywho keep up the great work guys!
It would still be worth a try to dump it. One of the address lines could be shorted or corroded so that it would still dump the garbage code. It may have something to do with the mapper. I'm sure this could be reproduced via emulation regardless
I remember this game, I played it since I was young, but I don't have a problem with it, but sometimes it gets glitchy when the game froze. They should called it "Super C: The F***ed Up Edition". I played a lot of NES games the years, but when one of the cartridge connectors are dirty, the game glitches and completely crashed while I was in the middle of playing a game. I got frustrated. The problem with my original NES is the screen blinks and not loading the game. I blow the connector and tried so many times and I got frustrated too. That happened a long time ago.
A friend of mine had a superC cart that was all scrambled something was wrong with it. Funny thing is, he knew the game so well, he was still able to beat it playing it all scrambled. It was insane I didn't believe him until I watched him do it. This was in the mid 90's I doubt he still has that cart or can still remember how to beat that game when you couldn't hardly see anything going on.
The super c glitched game mike has should be a nerd episode think of all the funny lines he could say. I think there could be so much he could do with it
I can already hear james screaming "fuuccckkkk" just from that thumbnail
XD
same lol
So true.
omfg hHA
What were they thinking?!?
The Glitch Gremlin lives in that Super C cart
"Glitches in me britches, not gonna work, not gonna work o'clock" :D
6:49 James got glitched and turning to a angry video game nerd.
Possessed copy of Super C would have made a nice AVGN episode. Been a while since the Nerd fought satan xD
RockMedved and the glitch gremling
Super Mecha Death Christ approves 👍🏼
You didn't lose the cart, Mike. It was invisible.
You mean invincible.
No, that was intended as a joke.
To allow for large bosses in games on Nintendo, games used the background layer to move it around rather than a series of sprites (which capped out at 5 per scanline I believe) and just programmed collision detection that moved with the background. Does the yellow devil From megaman follow this logic?
alex_9000 yes exactly. Perfect example really.
And now you know...
So if this glitch were to happened in the yellow devil fight.... Oh god...
alex_9000 I have seen this exact glitch in the yellow devil fight, but I can't remember where again. Was bullshit though with the boss being invisible.
I could watch James and Mike play anything
Me too.
Yeah
What about hide the sausage?
Nik Skid absolutely
I could watch them playing with eachothers joysticks.
LOL I could totally see Mike losing that cartridge for a good while. Glad they were able to recreate the epic glitched moment from the convention!
I didn't know Mabi watched Mike and James xD. Use to think you were too busy with modded Terraria lol.
“Don’t lose it mike” “I lost it” “you had one thing to do Mike! One thing!”
James releasing his battle cry in that thumbnail
I bet it sounds like Godzilla combined with a robot with a synthesized voice yelling "ASS"
(Btw, haven't watched it yet as I'm in Canada and Amazon prime video isn't avalable here, but apparently my picture made it into the lastest AVGN episode. The 14 year old that lays deep inside me is hyped as fuck)
TGX Game Reviews What do you mean with "my picture made it in the latest avgn episode"? Did he announce some kind of raffle to get a shout out in his video?
That's pretty funny! I love watching you guys play when funny stuff happens. The energy and enjoyment when you guys are laughing is infectious.
Blood on the controller?
Is this the new strat? Making blood ritutals to create glitched games?!
My cousin has an absolutely wrecked copy of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition for the Sega Mega Drive, every time you turned it on you could only play it for about 10 mins before a load of what looked like hexadecimal code came on the screen still in the game font which could be edited with the joypad. i wonder if you could inject code through that
James looks like he's channeling his inner Nerd in the thumbnail
He is!
I can't wait to watch these guys every week. I always look forward to whatever they come up with for their Mondays.
Instant classic! You guys are the best! Keep up the awesome work you do!
13:58 that high pitched "WHAT!?!" XD i only hear myself do those with video games, especially old school nes
This brings me back to my NES playing days.. Especially the levels of frustration when you die - none of the modern games can replicate that feeling.
please please do the next or near future, mike and james monday video of yall playing the glitched rocky game, please!
I think the result would be a glorious animated scene like the batman one.
i wish i had friends like james and mike :-(
"What the heck happened to this cartridge?"
Um, remember when Mike said he used to throw his games against the wall to get them to work...?
I bet the connectors are really dirty.
Peace Walker Probably from going up Mike's ass.
The glitch gremlin
ooooh yes, I bet they're really really naughty!
Nah, it’s probably interference from Mike’s massive mantenna.
Vercusgames are you positive? Not even my coleco games glitch like this. I think it's from the dirts

I would not be surprised if a dry solder joint wore out, causing this particular bug...
There should be a James and Mike episode where they play with Nintendo Labo.
Just don't let them play it in the car...
I love the rage in the thumbnail!
lasarousi LOL
Fun fact: Every young man with a beard looks like a girl or a baby(with beard).
When saw the thumbnail I didn't see James. I saw the AVGN
Thumbnail explain it all lmao
this just happens because the MMC3 (the chip that manages multiple levels of scrolling during boss battles) isn't connect properly.
That's what I was thinking. Could only be a mapper chip.
The Glitch Gremlin strikes again! Love it guys. One of my favorite Nerd episodes. Please do another AVGN Glitch episode. :-)
I would love to see you play through that glitched Rocky
James has this distinctive face when he says "Fuck"... I just love this face. It's filled with frustration anger and madness and somehow it's so relieving to watch.
YES! PLAY THAT ROCKY GAME! Please. :)
Please do the Rocky game, I died laughing on that episode, so freakin good!
James’ face in the thumbnail is too great
I had a Rampage cartridge that would show the monster's portraits reacting to stuff at the bottom.
Banchoking for real?
Yeah. I was too young to know what a glitch was so I thought I had figured out a secret.
4:20 like James says this happens in every Super-C. Happened to me all the time as a child. It’s from being in the ground and often happened when you land into the corner of the ground. I’ve never seen it happen from being in the ground and hen having the scroll instantiate it though!
I have the same glitchly super c and the boss battles are the same invisible and glitchly, awesome video
Please Don't Lose it Again Man.
Why All The Caps?
Gary Hobbesworth Possibly a Plumbers Don't Wear Ties reference?
When i was a kid and had a famiclone the ones with yellow cartridges usually. I had this multicart from 90' And when playing Mario 1 there, and physicaly shaking the inserted cartridge in the system, it would glitch, corrupt the game in a weird way...

The thumbnail for this is PRICELESS 😆
So many times ive made that James face playing just the n.e.s. 😄
The screen got stucked because the camera got to keep both players in even in death so it is not a glitch.
Super C, the Ultimate Mike Glitch edition.
Watched this video two times. I like how they both involved in his game, and care about what happend on the screen.
Rocky PS2 was about the funniest Nerd episode i've seen. So many laughs
I just remember that story of James having a wound in his finger and it starting bleeding again while he's playing and that just sounds so fucking metal

You guys were so into it, it was exciting!
glitchy rocky full episode needs to happen :P
Holy shit guys! Well done for getting on trending!
I love how you guys into this game. It's hilarious. Great content!
Mike, ya look much healthier, you look real good, grats guy, keep IT up!
Hurricanelive Maybe he's finally sleeping on a regular schedule? He had a long run of playing games on live streams almost every night , all night! The man is a vampire!
He looks a lot less dead
Hurricanelive it's all good he has an enormous... personality
He finally found the game up his ass. That'd pep anyone up.
He kicked his opioid addiction!
Please for the love of god, *please* play that Rocky game on James and Mike Monday
They did.
Many more mondays many more games.
I love it how Mike loughs.
Both, James and Mike are very sympathic.
I thought James was gonna bleed all over the controller again
I think we need to see James and Mike play Rocky for PS2
Well this is freaking awesome.
I really wish you guys would do something with ProtonJon sometime.
You each have the great love for Retro Games!
you know a guy is a true friend when he lets you take his lives without complaining.
Invisible bosses sure does make it harder for anyone. I'm pretty that mysterious cartilage glitch probably effects the map sprites than just the game play.

Yet another monday perfected!
Thanks to you james and mike!!
been powering through the seasons lately and
got so inspired I got out all my old consoles.

Keep it up guys loved you videos for almost give years now 🤗
I missed the TooManyGames panel but glad to meet you there at the party afterwards.
I haven't played this game much at all but Watching this makes me want to play it.
Never seen James scream "fuck" so loud. Not even in AVGN
man oh man i really love contra games, great video guys
I need to see the glitched Rocky game again. It was the best thing ever.

This video reminded me, I hope the glitch gremlin makes a return in a future nerd episode. He was amusing.
The folklore is, that fateful day, who came to the rescue from your cut hand?
None other than Adam Koralik, Dreamcast's truest fan
This cartridge is bad ass! Mike laughs like Mr. Belding sometimes
That was last year at too many games. That shit was crazy and I was in row 4 to boot.
I'd like to see the look on james' face when he finds out that I actually had a band-aid.. but I needed in case I got a scratch on the drive home.
I agree but, He'd probably be understanding.
Dude.... you have a pic with James!!!! I'm sooooo jealous.
James is very humble in person.
Legends say you're still in row 4
Alright, gents. This might be the best video that you two have made yet but I've only been watching you guys for a few months now. Gotta go check out Rocky glitch.
@3:42 I think the reason wny they give you invincibility before the earthquake part is so that you rush forward and fall in a hole.
I recently built a retro nintendo with a Raspberry Pi and showed my kids this game and they love it.
That Rocky game you mentioned was on the PS2 not GameCube.
My friend had a glitched Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel cartridge. I think it was the final level where you ascend the level with a jetpack or something and once you reached a certain spot in the level you would be blocked by an invisible barrier so you couldn't complete the level.

37 here. Gets real bad when you get married and your wife wants the basement and garage cleaned and you suddenly can't find anything.
Damn, the glitch gremlin was trying to get James with the same glitch that happened to him in Mega Man 5 when he was younger.
"Even the credits are fucked up" Lol. =D
TH-cam must be in another time zone right now. This was published at 1 am my time (EST) , but said the publish date was yesterday at the top. (lets the blade 1 theme confusion play in my head) The TH-cam on my console tells me what time it was published by (example: 36 mins ago)
Anywho keep up the great work guys!
Very early Monday upload! I love it!
Pretty interesting to have a unique game that functions that way. A collectable indeed!
10/10 best thumbnail ever
Dump the ROM of this.
Allie-RX Its not a bad Rom, the cart needs to be cleaned, you know, on real hardware? I had the same problem with my copy. Dumbass.
It would still be worth a try to dump it. One of the address lines could be shorted or corroded so that it would still dump the garbage code. It may have something to do with the mapper. I'm sure this could be reproduced via emulation regardless
Allie-RX DO IT
branaa09 lol cuz everyone who plays games knows how they r made and work... guess most gamers r all dumbasses
It's a glitch that probably can't be replicated.
I remember this game, I played it since I was young, but I don't have a problem with it, but sometimes it gets glitchy when the game froze. They should called it "Super C: The F***ed Up Edition".

Fucking awesome edition guys, loved watching this one
This is awesome and it has an epic story attached
I was there to witness this. Truly incredible.
Very surprised you did not use the 10 men code. Great video.
I never played this game but thanks to this video, i see the game ending. Nasty glitches game have!
i like how intense james gets
This is one of those videos that really gets enhanced when wathced (and listened to) at half speed. You're welcome.
A friend of mine had a superC cart that was all scrambled something was wrong with it. Funny thing is, he knew the game so well, he was still able to beat it playing it all scrambled. Super C is by far my favorite James and Mike Mondays.
The super c glitched game mike has should be a nerd episode think of all the funny lines he could say. I think there could be so much he could do with it
Damn I grew up with those kinda games, they made me a man.
Chill dude
