He played for Ireland (green jersey) nation rugby team. His Rugby club is Leinster (blue jersey) which is a provience in Ireland. There is also another rugby championship every 4 years called the Lions tour (red jersey) which he competed in 4 times being a record holder. He's an Irish LEGEND. He retired about 3 yrs ago.
A try is where you touch the ball down on the tryline. It is worth 5 pts but you get an extra 2 pts if you kick the ball over the bar after the try (conversion) The conversion is taken in line with where the ball was put down for the try. This is why he put the ball down under the posts, to make the conversion easier. Like so he can see this
You need to understand, he played for Ireland. 1 of the greatest players of all time. Our little island produces a world beating rugby team every year. He was the best of all of us tho
Maybe the greatest outside centre to ever play the game and the only time he ever played for a team I love was on tour with the British and Irish Lions. Could do absolutely everything and did it with a grace few players possess.
He played for Ireland and Leinster. You need to have downward pressure on the ball when you go for a try and the conversion is taken 20 yards straight out from where the ball is grounded. That’s why you see him trying to get as close to the goal posts as possible
2:58 To score you have to touch the ground with your hand on the ball(downward pressure). You can score a try everywhere but the difference from football is, they have to kick the conversion(extra point) from where they scored. That's why they try to score near the posts. A try "touchdown" is 5pts and conversion(extra point) 2pts. If you are interested in the basic rules and scoring system watch this video... th-cam.com/video/smnuRhNtT2E/w-d-xo.html
he is retired now but he was the best ever 13 or center ever to grace the field of rugby.hes from ireland clontarf dublin born january 21st 1979 and he played for leinster ireland and the lions he is missed
When you touch down the ball over the try line it’s 5 points the posts are there for kicking there are 3 types of kicks conversions which are taken after a try worth 2 points where the conversion is taken is determined by where the ball is touched down eg. touched down in middle under posts conversion from straight infront Penalties are awarded for foul play where the team that wins the penalty have an option to kick over posts worth 3 points The last type is a drop goal this can happen at any time in open play the ball must be kicked over posts awarding 3 points the catch is you must drop the ball onto ground and kick it on the bounce Conversions and penalties are taking by placing the ball on a tee which elevated the ball off the grass from 2-4 inches depending on the kickers preferred tee
He runs under the post because it is the easiest way for the kicker to get a conversion which is a kick at goal from wherever the ball was touched down to get an additional 2 points onto the 5 the try gets
The reason they try and score or touch the ball down near the post is for the kick after. It is taken straight out from the the place you score. This way it lessens the angle and increases the chance of scoring. if you can't get close just score anyway that's why most times they just get it across the line.
To score a try have to touch the ball to the ground under control the reason they try to get as close to the posts as possible is to make the following conversion kick easier as the kick is taken directly in line with where the try was scored from
Niall T no i understand, I was just saying I need to pick a rugby team and a soccer team. Wasn't trying to say Ireland and England are the same. Just saying I'll be in the neighborhood. When in Rome do as the Romans do and what not
BRIAN 0 DRISCILL IS IRISH A GREAT RUGBY PLAYER WAS CAPT OF IRISH TEAM FOR QUITE A LONG TIME NOW RETIRED. BUT WE ALL HAVE GREAT MEMORIES OF HIS TIME AS CAPT OF IRISH TEAM. GREAT WINS AND GREAT MATCHES
When they score a try (Like a touch down in American football) they get a conversion kick (field goal). When they score the try, where ever the ball is they take a conversion kick inline with where they placed the ball, so that's why they try and place as close as they can to the posts.
Hey just came across you channel by pure luck and have to say I really enjoy it. Loved watching your reaction vids to Irish sport and players such as Brian O'Driscoll (BOD)...really good. The section in this vid at approx 4:13 to 4:18 was a pile-driver from the NZ team. It involved two players lifting BOD up, turn him upside down and drive him hard into the ground by his head. It is an illegal, dangerous and potentially life threatening tackle as it could easily break a neck. The tackle caused huge world wide condemnation as it put BOD out for some time. The players that did it, at first, were very "so what" attitude to it. I feel BOD was targeted many times over his career because he could tear a team apart so easily. A truly great player...I am more a football (soccer) fan but this guy was simply amazing to watch. He was the Pele, Diego Maradonna, George Best, Ronaldo (both of them), Lionel Messi of rugby :)
Coola Boola People generally hate on people who are doing good at "whatever." I've done it and have been a victim of it. In The U.S. we call them "Haters" lol
Greatest to ever play the game..... only missed about a year with injuries his entire career and most of that time was due to an illegal spear tackle while on the lions tour against New Zealand/All blacks.
mb1968nz the kiwis are the ones that still seem to be crying about it, they won’t shut up about how O’driscoll was such a “terrible” player. Despite him being the second greatest centre ever imo after the great Tim Horan. Just get over it mate.
You have to touch the ball down in a controlled manner, the closer to the centre of the post the easier the kicker places the ball for the follow up kick. It's kinda like your football once you go over the line it's a try or touchdown. However in American football the kick always takes place in the centre of the goal. In rugby if you land the ball in the corner the kick is taken from that corner.
Comnig an from an english meant that he often played against england.Basically professional rugby players if they are good enough play for their national team.In ireland we have 4 pro clubs which represent the 4 provinces of ireland and the best players from these clubs providing they are good enough and irish or 5 years resident in ireland and of course good enough are picked to play for ireland. The ireland team plays in the annual 6 nations championship against england scotland wales france and italy. They also play one off internationals against south africa NZ australia and other countries in the fall and in the world cup every 4 years.Thats basically his first two teams the last team is made up of scotland ireland england wales best players called the british and irish lions which tour a team from the southern hemisphere every 4 years in a three game series in the southern hemisphere, but never in europe .One years it would be south africa anothe yearr NZ and another year in australia.
He is the best rugby player of all time he nearly won everything in his career and the Ireland and Leinster teams had been blessed for what a gifted player they had #BOD
To score a try you must ground the ball and your hand must be on the ball when you do so, you can't just run over the try line like you do in American 'football'.
The try line runs the width of the pitch, but if you put the ball down between or near the posts it makes it easier for the 'kicker' as you would call them to convert the try, a try is 5 points, a conversion is an extra two points.
For those of you who say he was the greatest player of all time, what a joke.He wasnt even the best centre ever.New Zealand have had better centres than him and he never impressed against the All Blacks or beat them either. To be the best you have to prove it against the best.Im not saying he was rubbish,he was good but not the best ever.
Best Irish rugby player of all time, class act, but not the best of all time or even the best in his position in the last 20 years. (Don't hate irishers, you cant claim being a little island with limited player resources as a badge of honour and then get prissy when people say 'big fish in a small pond' when putting guys like O'Driscoll in perspective )
Doc Gonzales he’s not a big Fish in a small pond because he played against the best like New Zealand England South Africa and still stood out as the best player on the pitch

Niall T Thats cool!
Yeah and that whole time he was playing he never once beat the mighty all blacks...NH rugby blow hards.
Plenty of great soccer players never beat Brazil, doesn't make them less great.

Michael Bell thanks!
yeah it took Ireland over 100 years to beat New Zealand and he wasn't part of that team :)
He waits and takes the hit just to get to release a little later . That behind the back forward pass 👏👏👏🍀🇮🇪
Maybe the greatest outside centre to ever play the game and the only time he ever played for a team I love was on tour with the British and Irish Lions. Could do absolutely everything and did it with a grace few players possess.

Morgie I've learned a ton doing these videos from you guys! Ill be in England soon so ima have to pick a team to pull for. lol
LunaWolfMXS dude you do know that Ireland and England are 2 different countries? Ireland is NOT IN THE UK. IRISH PEOPLE ARE NOT BRITISH.
Niall T no i understand, I was just saying I need to pick a rugby team and a soccer team. Wasn't trying to say Ireland and England are the same. Just saying I'll be in the neighborhood. When in Rome do as the Romans do and what not

Scott Judge true!
bullshit Tana Umaga was a much better player..ILLEGAL tackle..LOL...he got smashed and you clowns are still crying years later LOL
mb1968nz the kiwis are the ones that still seem to be crying about it, they won’t shut up about how O’driscoll was such a “terrible” player. Despite him being the second greatest centre ever imo after the great Tim Horan. Just get over it mate.
He played for ireland, leinster and irish and British lions
He has now retired! Played for Leinster & Ireland! 😊😊
Hes irish man, he played for ireland internationaly and played club rugby for leinster an irish team
It doesn't matter if he runs through the post or runs beside and then touchdown the ball , the points stay the same
You have to touch the ball down in a controlled manner, the closer to the centre of the post the easier the kicker places the ball for the follow up kick. Where you place it determans the angle of the kick so between the post it straight
Rugby is a great game, I think it could be big in the US, some skill crossover with NFL.
The more you are close of the post for the tries it is easier to kick it under the posts. He plays for Ireland

nice vid bud
Morgie thanks man!
If you touch it down behind the line its a try. But you can kick it after so under the post would be the best posistion to put it
He is the best player
His very first international try is absent here. It was against USA.
Dude there is no forward passing in rugby
He retired but he played for Ireland
5:40 it has to be a backwards pass in rugby too.
Red shirt is the British and Irish lions

LunaWolfMXS no problem. you won't regret it if you though O'Driscoll was small next to everyone he was real small but he was a great player.
And a terrible nice fella as well.

New Zealand is a busted flush and has been for some time.
