    At the time of this post I am 48 years of age. Staunch All Black supporter. It is of my opinion that Brian O`Driscoll would be the best centre-ever, within the years that I have followed this game. Should they make a world team from the last 40 years, Brian in my opinion would be the only Northern Hemisphere player in it. Such a talent and leader of men...

    Best centre I've ever seen & an absolute great of the game - in his early days he ghosted through defences, with competitors flailing in vain attempts to get a hold of any part of him. In later years, it was his guts and determination that was immensely satisfying to watch, though he also never lost that ability to find himself in the right place at the right time and make a decisive impact on a game (even when a good deal of his pace had deserted him). Top quality guys like that just don't come around often, so regardless of whether they're English, Irish, Aussie, Welsh or Kiwi, true Rugby fans know 'em when they see 'em & are grateful to have witnessed the skill, sportsmanship and that little bit of magic that embodies all that is good about the sport of Rugby Union.

    • @jj12313

      Drico got the absolute best from his body and the most it had to give.
      The way he played throughout his career reflected the growth of the game in Ireland and was certainly the catalyst for a great deal of it. Before professionalism became a lifestyle in Irish Rugby Drico was a kid who would give you whiplash if you tried to lay a finger on him.
      Ireland had had great players and great teams before, but now we had them and they were turning pro.
      It took a while longer for professionalism to become a lifestyle in Ireland than in some places. A few penguins may have been psychologically scarred along the way, but no Dwarfs were tossed and noone jumped off the StenaLine.
      Brian attracted fans and investments and ultimately he is a vital component in bringing Irish rugby into the pro era.
      As a young captain he struggled for words and so he looked to becoming the best player that he could be , the player that most embodied on the field what it meant to wear the jersey. This was how he got his message across.
      Drico was selfless and at times reckless with his well being, knocking himself unconscious in tackles and playing on with raging headaches.
      He was a warrior still living to an old code that he was helping the game move on from.
      As his speed and his step started to leave him and the cartilage started to either fuse together or find it's self being relocated to some other more needy part of the machine, Drico did the sensible thing and became a defensive specialist.
      He bulked up and began using his still explosive acceleration to nail guys from the line or shoot up and take an interception.
      We saw more of his hands, he made so many passes that are sincerely awe inspiring and bewilderingly brilliant.
      In doing all that he could to become the best that he could be, Drico helped define professionalism in Ireland and along with people like Paul O'Connell and Leo Cullen, Eddie O'Sullivan, Declan Kidney, Anthony Foley and later Michael Cheica and Joe Smidth, they would shape the next generation of Irish players into professional athletes.
      Guys like Bowe and Kearney, Heaslip, Healey, O'Brien and Zebo ...... All of these guys and many more have felt the confidence of walking onto a field with legends like Drico and O'Connell at their end of the paddock and that confidence has become hereditary, being passed on through the fibers of the green jersey.

    As an Irishman who is a avid rugby man... talent is talent regardless of where there from. But Brian O'Driscoll is just that one of a kind that cannot be replicated. He as a 13 had passes moves that you cant teach. his offloading defence astounding but his ability score impossible sometimes.
    He is also a man of great character humble, loyal and always willing to put his body on the line for his team.

    • @inBODwetrust13
      @inBODwetrust13 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      ***** the problem with Umaga is highlighted by his spear tackle on BOD in 2005 Lions tour. He was a shit. Moreover the fact he felt it was necessary to take O'Driscoll out of the series shows how much the All Blacks and Umaga feared him

    • @DownloadARevolt20
      @DownloadARevolt20 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's because it's the All Blacks that they play for *****! They haven't put on too many man of the match performances, have they? Take them out of the All Blacks side and put them anywhere else and they don't really show their class! They aren't classified as saviors or anything like that, because that honor falls to McCaw! I'm talking about someone who provides inspiration, who was born a leader, and who racked up many man of the match performances and was successful both domestically and internationally! O'Driscoll ticks those boxes!

    • @DownloadARevolt20
      @DownloadARevolt20 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** You do make a couple of valid points there, but in fact, the idea that promoting your side of the debate that they play for the All Blacks shows that individually, they wouldn't be able to show that anywhere else.
      Another thing, BOD just became the most capped player in Test rugby, surpassing George Gregan with 140 caps to his name. Can Nonu and Smith beat that? No, they will not.
      Another thing, you are forgetting the Six Nations. O'Driscoll is also the leading all time try scores with 26 to his name, yet to be beaten by anyone else. With the great Shane Williams retired, hard to see that happening for a while. O'Driscoll has also won Player of the Year in the tournament 3 times.
      He has also won the RaboDirect 3 times, the Hcup 3 times, while neither Umaga nor Nonu nor Smith have won anything with the Hurricanes.
      O'Driscoll has also led WAY more Test matches than Umaga has, and Nonu has never led any, nor has Smith.
      O'Driscoll has also been shortlisted for IRB player of the year 3 times (in which he should have won in 2009, only to be taken by McCaw, because it's the All Blacks, and he had missed half of the ENTIRE SEASON!).

    • @Tenereus
      @Tenereus 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Christian Simmons He's one of the best, no doubt, but the thing is that rugby has so many different positions and types of players that we can't really tell. O'Driscoll would be in competition with the likes of Tim Horan, Tana Umaga, Martin Johnson, Jonah Lomu, John Eales and Richie Mccaw. How would you go about comparing that set of players? Sorry if I sound condescending, it wasn't my intention, but you see my point I hope :-)

    • @christiansimmons630
      @christiansimmons630 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      owe i totally agree but in terms of what he's done for he image of the sport, the sport itself and rugby in Ireland (never mind the rest of the world) i thing he stands head and shoulders over the rest, but completely how can you compare BOD with Martin Johnson or Rory Underwood? you can't but I think off the pitch he's been radical for rugby

    • @Tenereus
      @Tenereus 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christian Simmons Yeah, that's what I meant - you can't really compare O'Driscoll, a skill-based player with Johnson - a "hard graft" type player or Lomu, an athleticism based player (with skill). As for off the pitch, I agree - with Irish rugby especially, his impact has been profound. However, he's not the only guy like that - Mccaw, Wilkinson et al. are just the same.

      if bod had been born a kiwi, no one would ever have heard of conrad smith outside of wellington. Get over your parochial bullshit and accept the facts. O'Driscoll was the greatest centre of all time. He played for a side that was by and large average across the majority of positions and nevertheless managed to dominate the role of an international 13 for over a decade. Not every great player has to be from new zealand. there are quite a few all blacks, who deprived of the luxury of consistently playing in great teams for the entirety of their careers, would be revealed as relatively mediocre individual footballers. Nonu is proving that somewhat in france at the moment.

    • @AJ_Cricket_Fish
      @AJ_Cricket_Fish 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      New Zealand were so scared of BoD that they had to dump him on his head in the Lions tour as they knew he was the biggest threat. While saying that any All Black is mediocre is idiotic, saying Tindall or Contemponi were in BoD's league is as well.
      For me BoD is the best player to ever grace the game. Whether or not you agree with that specifically, if you don't put him in the conversation then you never played the game and apparently never watched it either. There have been many great players, but for me he's the one who made the most happen, the most often and in the most different ways.

    • @Youre
      @Youre 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In all fairness, he would've struggled to even make the All Blacks. Remember they had Umaga and then Conrad Smith during that time period. He wouldn't have had as much impact had he played for the All Blacks because he would have struggled to make the team and would've been surrounded by many other players just as good, if not better than him.
      That's the honest truth.

    • @MadocNco
      @MadocNco 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Umaga and Smith are both undoubtedly greats of the game, but if you think either of them have a diversity of skill, brilliance of technique, understanding of the game or utter force of personality which is greater than O'Driscoll's, then I'm sorry, but you are talking out of your arse :)

    • @Youre
      @Youre 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      George Lewis I agree that neither of them have the diversity of skill or natural brilliance of technique. In terms of understanding the game I'd say he's on par with Smith, they're both exceptional. As for force of personality, Umaga is literally the most influential personality that the All Blacks have had this century. He was a brilliant leader in every way, so I don't think O'driscoll out does him on this point.
      I also think that both Smith and Umaga were better defenders than O'driscoll.
      Also, they both, especially Smith, fitted perfectly into their teams and provided the perfect skill set for their combinations with the players around them, so it's hard to argue that O'driscoll would have started ahead of them.
      Nonetheless, all 3 of them are greats, like you said :)

Take in this masterclass everybody because pundits will use his name for years to come as the standard of a truly great player. His individual stats speak for themselves nevermind the 3 heinekin cups 1 grandslam (plus another championship when we beat France) and numerous pro twelve titles. Best I've ever seen play the game.. I know it's difficult to compare with so many different positions on the pitch, but taking into account skills, a rugby brain, determination, courage and leadership, there's been no one more consistent than Brian O'Driscoll for me. He's been the best 13 in the game for about 12+ years now, and to stay at the top, and keep performing on such a world class level and delivering for Ireland, Leinster and the Lions is just incredible. Reminds me a bit of Steve Redgrave, but the rugby equivalent! He seems like a really humble guy too, the kind of guy that if you met in a bar and you didn't know who he was, you wouldn't know about all he'd achieved, because he's so down to earth and modest. There'll never be another one like BOD.
