Thankyou so much for documenting your process to get into, test, and swap out the pack elements. I just received my 2009 Estima EfourX last week on the other side of the country, in BC. The pack seems weak. this video is going to save me so much trouble.
I have toyota estima 2007 hybrid since 2015 I changed few things myself abs system and steering control but it's fantastic car I still have there not any better car to replace it thank you for great battery information and your hard working I do appreciate your help ❤❤
Thanks! I'm planning on doing a full review of the Estima soon and documenting any other repairs it needs. I'm glad you liked the video and would love if you subscribed. (I'm still a small channel with not enough subs for monetization)
I love this man. He is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Once my car broke down on the way to Ho Chi Minh City, and he flew to Vietnam to fix my car and flew back overnight in order to make his shift the next day.
Hope you like my video. Still learning how to film/edit. As far as I know there are only a handful of Estima Hybrids in all of Canada and no others on the east coast so repairing this hybrid battery with so little local support is not for the faint of heart. Hopefully videos like this are interesting/helpful. More coming soon. Picking up another JDM vehicle at the train yard in Halifax next month!
Fantastic video! Not much people even know this pretty model. Thank you very much. And, do you have an idea how to "utilized" more power on the battery rather than petrol please? My 09 Hybrid runs 7.7L/100KM (12.xKM/L) and the engine kicks in very early. Even though, the car doesn't have a good acceleration experience.
The estima might be a while before someone figures out the lithium upgrade as the hybrid model wasn't sold alongside the petrol versions anywhere outside of Japan. Fingers crossed though. As for your question about the gas engine coming on rather quickly, the hybrid system in these vans is considered a light hybrid with both motors combining for ~22% of the vehicles overall power. Compare that to a 2nd Gen prius where the electric motor produces ~47%. The gas motor will come on with anything other than the lightest acceleration but that doesn't mean the electric motors aren't still helping share the load. My fuel consumption was approaching 9l/100km right before the original toyota batteries failed. After swapping them the van immediately improved to 7.4l/100km so battery capacity is helpful in that regard. Still comparable minivans where I am in North America typically get 12l/100km on a good day. The most modern $60,000CAD 2023 Toyota Sienna hybrids average ~7.0l/100km. So you're still doing pretty good!
Great video. Where does the battery fan get it air input from? from under the car? Is there a filter? Did you check how dirty fan etc was ? And where does it exit?
The fan gets its air from one the dash. There isn't a filter but it can clog with fine dust. Almost like lint. You always take the opportunity to clean them out when doing this. Mine wasn't that bad but I still blasted compressed air in there whole I was at it.
Thank You so much I need to know all about that van 2006 - 2007 so far I know engine is 2.4 L 2AZ-FXE I4 which is also used at Camry hybrid and transmission type CVT k112 used also by Toyota RAV4 - 2.0/2.4/2.5L (2005-2011) so I think no problem with parts in Canada if something happen and main battery should last 100000 km but I don't know if is available in Canada or import only and how much it cost; also brakes I mean what is compatibility with other Toyota cars and practically all car parts .Generally I am trying to have knowledge what parts are available to buy in Canada what i will need to import.
The brakes aren't compatible with other Canadian toyotas from what I've been able to find out so far. When I do need brakes I know the fronts can be swapped to highlander discs/pads if you also change the calipers. I'm still trying to confirm the if the same can be done with the rears. If not there is a parts supplier for Estima parts based in the UK that ships to Canada. Pads and rotors for front and back come to about $800CAD total after shipping. When it needs any sort of maintenance I'll be sure to film and upload here. If you haven't already I'd love if you subscribed and followed along with the Estima and our other projects like Benoit's Supra or my Crown. Cheers
www.japeurocarparts.co.uk/search.php?id=0&vid=2206&make=7&modelID=2129&id=#results For parts, just double checked. It's $711 CAD to ship full set of pads and rotors for the Estima.
Now I understand why the van is worth $3-$4000 in Japan. I am looking at one in West coast from a dealership. The good thing is it’s been serviced and checked by experts hence the $2k premium over importing one. My plan is to turn it into a camper van for a trip in May across the USA. Meanwhile I can do Uber Eats to stress test it more while I convert it. 😂 Can the mid section captain seat be installed reverse so it faces the trunk? I just need one chair so as long as it fits the rails then I’m good.
I've taken them off, I'm not sure if the lever to slide them on the rails and left and right will work when you reverse them. Might have to get them in the position you want. They should bolt back in though. The hybrid is a damn good road trip vehicle with the inverter/outlets and curtains
@@gearheadsyndrome This encourages me to get one. The hybrid battery will last another 150,000km and more if you use it daily. Order extra wear and tear parts like tie rods and it’s good. Thanks for taking apart the battery.
Hello from Manitoba i am really big fan JDM cars ; my daily drive is 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero for 5 years i had Nissan elgrand Highway Starr but somebody hit me last winter and van is gone now so I am looking for replacement I seriously thinking to buy estima Hybrid and digging any information's about that van can you share some of your knowledge with me
@leosammarelli3657 Glad to have helped a bit. Highly recommend getting the Dr. PRIUS app as a start for any battery issues. I'm in Moncton NB. Where in Canada are you?
Hi i wondering if you get fully charged the battery and how long is working to drive on that ,because of mine on indicator is showing half charged and drop to 2 or 1 line ,do you have a idea what is wroong ? battery is nearly gone? No errors and year is 2011 . Thank you
It's really mild hybrid system with only about 20% of overall power from the electric motors. Its really is only good on EV only mode for a couple kms. Its mainly just for regenerative braking and to help the gas engine along when accelerating.
There is also a maximum speed. If you're concerned about your battery condition, I highly recommend the Dr. Prius app and a compatible BT OBD 2 reader. Very useful diagnostic tool and not that expensive.
In the 2nd video I mention them because I was frustrated with their warranty customer service. I used Ennocar. An oem replacement from Toyota was supposedly only available in Japan as a full assembly but even that I couldn't seem to find any or arrange shipment. I had to settle for these. Now that I've dealt with the 2 factory defect cells the pack has been great since.
@@gearheadsyndrome aha! Hadn't noticed the second video. Thanks. Just watched it & feel very reassured that changing the cells is definitely a diy job albeit quite involved.
I'm glad I was able to give you the confidence to attempt it. It was a daunting job for me with very little online. Not having any English videos or instructions was actually why I started this youtube channel. If you haven't already, I'd love to have you subscribed as me and my friends will be featuring any other shenanigans we get up to with our eclectic collection of vehicles.
@@gearheadsyndrome how much was the Ennocar cells from China in total with shipping to Canada? I owned a 1st gen Alphard Hybrid in Canada but ended up getting this generation Estima with the 2GR and V6 AWD because i was afriad of this battery situation. I like your video style, I am looking to buy a 2002 estima with a bad cell and the company is saying that the cells are 7.2 volts, but yours are 11
The 2002 is the previous generation. I suspect the batteries are different but I'm not familiar with older gen.
Informative and useful.

Hi mate, does it have 2 different types of battery and did you have to change cells in both?

Thanks for the video brother. I am having issues with the battery too.. where did you order it from?

Nothing wrong with being a hybrid... It's got great back up power.....
It needs a lot of courages to change just one or a couple of cells, if the car just selling less than $2000.
Can you recondition the cells? If yes what voltage and what are the min and max mAh for each discharge and charge, and how many cycles?
That's a question for the battery experts. I'm sure they can be to an extent. I purchased new given the originals were 17 years old.

@gearheadsyndrome thank you for response but in my case if i switch to ev is going just about 200 m and he disconnected and switch on petrol

Note the DrPrius app will show six 19.2V batteries and nine 14.4v batteries
Correct. It groups the smaller cells into pairs of two because that's how theyre configured in the pack and how the toyota software monitors them.
Hey Jason, where did you get the replacement cells from?
In the 2nd video I mention them because I was frustrated with their warranty customer service.

Hi, I have a question please
Hopefully I can help. What would you like to know? I'm not really an expert, just a determined owner.
