That outro guitar solo at 40:30 by Marty Friedman on "Poison was the Cure" is so underrated, no one really talks about it because Marty has so many epic solos with Megadeth...but it really is a great one that deserves more props.
You gotta put respect to Marty's name. He's not just "the other guitarist" in Megadeth. Marty Friedman was one of the best guitarists in Megadeth and known for writing some of the best solos in the band
The first time I heard Speed Metal Symphony by Marty & Jason Becker blew my mind, Cacophony were a different league of musicianship and the majority of people have never heard of them!
A general, I suppose rule of thumb is if a solo is very aggressive , it's Dave. If very melodic or exotic like the Arabic transition solo in holy wars that's Marty. Perfect megadeth line up. A true masterpiece. They truly compliment each other in many ways. But the switch of dueling solos in hanger shows just what is megadeth.
That solo and breakdown on Five Magics is still one of my favorite pieces of metal ever devised, its just so atmospheric and technical that it sounds like its almost going into prog metal territory.
Holy wars and hangar 18 are iconic. Take no prisoners through lucretia is an INSANE stretch of underrated BANGERS! And the finale stretch is epic. Love this album
Man I wished I was in that chat to give you more context and answers to your questions lol. Nevertheless, great reaction, I really liked your little breakdowns and interpretations which where mostly on point, it was pretty entretaining and enjoyable. I'll answer some of them here even if other people have already answered them but why not lol. ALSO, I'd love if you keep reacting to Megadeth, their second albums is just as important and recognized as this one, and their first and third albums are also amazing even if forgotten sometimes (the first album is my personal favorite rn). Their later stuff gets different flavors so check that out as well. Anyways, to answer some of your doubts: Dave was fired in 83 and formed Megadeth shortly after (although they didn't release the first album up untill 85). Dave has songwritting credits in 4 songs from Metallica's first album, 2 on their second album, and according to Dave he also wrote a riff in the third album but he hasn't been credited with it yet, so idk. Dave's relationship with Metallica was kinda difficult even when there are still pictures of him and Lars Ulrich together on stage in 87 or something like that, there are multiple interviews where Dave gets in depth into it but he was pretty hurt from it up untill the 2000s. Metallica where doing therapy, and a part of that was talking with Dave. After that, they all played a show alongside the other Big 4 Bands in 2010 (except Slayer lol), on the last song every band member of Megadeth, Metallica, and Anthrax played a cover of Dimond Head's Am I Evil toghether. On 2011 Dave also joined Metallica for the first (and last) time since his firing due to Metallica's 30th anniversary, although he just played two songs, but still. They are on good terms now, not like they are great friends (or friends at all) or anything like that, but is seems Dave, Lars, and James have somewhat healed from it. Yes, Tornado of Souls is about Dave's ex, Diana Aragon. He was forced into rehab by his record label before the album, and during that time he broke up with her. Dave said that by that point their relationship was pretty toxic. He has other songs inspired by her, the other most popular one being Wake Up Dead from their second album (and slightly before they were "officially" dating). And btw, the other voices in Rust In Peace and Dawn Patrol are also Dave singing. Lucretia is about a ghost Dave thought lived in his house for some time lol. You should revisit the solos, but search on google from who is each solo and make sure to pay attention to Marty Friedman's solos. As much as I love Dave and his solos (like the last one in Holy Wars or the last one in Fave Magics), Marty's solos are usually inmensly better, he's such a monster guitarrist. Dave was kind of sober during this album. He had left hard drugs but was still on cigs. He wasn't fully clean until their next album. Bonus since you mentioned Primus lol: Primus' guitarrist, Larry Lalonde was previously a founding member of Possessed, the band that many people cite as being the original creators of death metal. Their debut album, Seven Churches, is pretty good. Interesting genre change there by Larry. I may have forgotten some things but these are the main questions and doubts I remember lol, even if I'm 6 months late. Again, I'd love for you to react to other albums, I really have a hard time choosing my favorite between this and their first and second albums. I really love Dave's riffs and songwriting lol.
They say theres no beef but there is . the most recent beef was metallic wanting to release a special edition of their 7 song demo that got them signed . It's not happening because Lars wanting his name on writing credits of 2 songs that were all Dave and 2 songs that were Dave and James . Parts were changed for the actual album versions so Lars can sneak his name there but the No Life Til Leather demos not so much . That demo is the only place other than live vids you'll hear Dave . He's on no official releases . He did show up to the 30 annv show and play a couple songs on stage with metallica Thanks for staying away from the remasters . Of the first 4 peace sells ( album 2 ) would be the next big one . But the first and 3rd rule too . The first is absolutely brutal . Dave was not happy about how things went down with metallica with them all driving from Cali to NYC to record the first album and them firing him and putting him on a bus back then still using his songs
I used to listen to Cryptic Writings on the way to work and I always got to my exit right when FFF and Disintegrators would come on and I'd be going 120.
His squeals during the Lucretia solo were “intentionally unintentional” meaning that he meant to do pinches, but if they weren’t there, the solo would have worked fine- please let me know if you’d like to know more about the technique side of their playing, I have studied megadeth for many years- I am also autistic so I can hear things others cannot and can bring a very insightful angle to the analysis of megadeth :)
This record, Slayers Reign in Blood, Metallicas Master Of Puppets are the gold, silver and bronze, imo. Everyone has a different take, but this is my favorite.
New subscriber here! Of course I’m biased because I’m a big Megadeth fan (although I’m acutely aware of their shortcomings on some albums), but this album is a 10/10. Thrash metal excellence. And I really enjoyed your vibe and commentary!
The line up for this Masterpiece was the best of all Megadeth albums. However their early line up that included Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland just had a different rhythm and feel because of their Jazz background which i absolutely loved and miss. Peace Sells is severely underrated and gives Master of Puppets a run for its money for 2nd greatest Thrash album of all time. This album is in my opinion the best of all time.
Been listening to this album since it first came out around 90 i think. One of the first things that attracted me to it was Vic Rattlehead resurrecting the alien 👽 in the cryogenic chamber.
Complicated guitar solos with flavor and twist is Marty Friedman, Dave solos are a bit more punkiers and fast but sometimes Dave deliver complicated solos too specially in the first 2 Megadeth albums. But he compensate because he is or was one of the best rythm guitar composer of metal for so long. He is quite repetitive now but he did wonder songwritting in his prime.
To be honest many metal bands had pretty deep lyrics. Especially the Big 4 but also Sacred Reich, Nuclear Assault, Exodus. So much great music in those times
Better be careful here guy. Dave is a Trump guy, and Trump doesn't want war. Love em both and loved your reaction! Take no Prisoners was a commentary not just on the horrors of war but how our government ignored vets afterwards.
Seems like Dave is a prophet for today’s world. The first part of Holy Wars is very relevant today. The crazy thing is that this was written in the 90’s.
In the late 80s, early 90s, I listened to REM, INXS, Violent Femmes, etc. Then I heard this album & And Justice for All which led to more thrash and heavier music and punk. Still rock out to REM and the others but will always consider this album to be a classic.
The reason some of Megadeth sounds like Metalica is because early Metalica up to And Justice for all but mostly on Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets they used Dave Mustaines style and riffs and also some of his songs which pissed Dave off more and made the beef deference them worse at the time they threw him out of the band.
That Hank Hill Mike Judge voice was spot on. I sort of grew up listening to metal so I laugh because I've lived through that "the music is making kids evil!" nonsense. My brother introduced me to metal when I was like 5 with bands like Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus, Metallica, Slayer, etc. and I can't imagine having grown up any other way. Unlike Metallica I feel like Megadeth stayed true to their origins for at least their first 6 or 7 albums although there are definitely some where you can see, like Cryptic Writings, they were going for radio friendliness. Rust in Peace is a masterpiece though, period.
"I hear a lot of Metallica in parts of this...".... what you mean is in Metallica you hear lots of MUSTAINE in parts of their first 4 records. Listen to Dave's recent clip on TH-cam. He practically said how much material/arrangements/compositions he gave/left Metallica - most of which = on Kill 'em All, RTL and some elements on Master/AJFA. It's fairly well documented now and Metallica don't deny. Only their pig headed fans do. Nick Menza and Gar Samuelson were amazing drummers.
Mustaine was kicked out right after Mustaine gave them the right connections and showed them how to write and play music as they got their album out - Kill Em All.
Acabas de reaccionar al mejor album en la historia del Trash Metal,no hay nada que se le hacerque NADA. Bueno si,talvez un póco Peace Sells,Countdown to Extinctiono o Kill 'Em All pero poco.
Check out their live show blood in the water tour in San diego...... one of their better lineups since Marty Friedman. Check out the songs sleepwalker and wake up dead
Tornado of Souls is about a turbulent relationship he was in with an ex girlfriend which also another reason for his on and off addiction to drugs. The Solo in the middle of the song by Mary Friedman is the best solo ever written. When he put it together and played it for Dave Mustaine, he was blown away
You do know Dave was in Metallica. They were spawned from the same band. There's strong chance that your favorite songs off kill em all were written by Megadeth.
In Hangar 18 they pass off solos between mustaine and marty friedman.. they way you could identify the solos is Dave were more old school thrash metal solos and pretty straightforward while Marty friedman is more melodic use different phrasing and scale, much smoother. The way that marty bends the string WAYYY better and smoother than dave, as soon you hear that smooth and long bends you know that is Marty Friedman.
those song wanna tells us that we all down here knows exactly what was going on between all giants up there. they wanna shows who are the most powerful among them. with political n religious will, they forced us to do their shits we just can see but cannot do anything to change, no where tu run even to hide.
The lyrics to every song on so far so good so what and peace sells are infinitely better. The last part of holy wars the .... the punishment due is about Frank Castle a.ka. the punisher from Marvel comics.
The Holy War lyrics were actually not inspired by any thought of Islam. Dave was ignorant to Islam at that time as was most Westerners. Even thosec that traveled because generally musicians would only ever go to Westernized nations that allow them. Ain't no way Megadeth is gonna be allowed or survive playing in some of those areas.
Up until Dave was alcoholic and violent. The original line up had Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefison(the bassist). Also Chris Poland (lead and rhythm) and Gar Samuelson (drums). Chris and Gar were jazz fusion musicians and as good or better than Marty and Nik. Heroin was big in the jazz scene, and Gar intoduced it to the band. The rest is history
Dave mustaine, the best release that Metallica has ever put out. And the history is that they traded in a Lamborghini in Dave Mustaine for a 1972 Ford pickup with missing hubcaps in Kirk Hammett, therefore blessing us by giving birth to Megadeth . Megadeth is a far far superior band in musicianship, technical ability and writing in music and complexity in Arrangements compared to the Simplicity of Metallica.... Metallica can't begin to compare to Megadeth. Put it this way and especially for drums........ Megadeth could easily play any Metallica song, but Metallica couldn't probably play 95% of Megadeth songs
In middle school (mid 80's) me and my buds thought Metallica was cool but Megadeth was badass. Tighter and more technical. You're on that same train. [edit] Mustaine was kicked out in '83 right before the recording of Kill'em All. The producer at the time thought Mustaine was a drunk asshole, which he was. I just think Dave always knew he could command his own band and style, so that's what happened.
Thanx for explaining Dave’s exit from Metalica more accurately than most who mistakenly and wrongly say because Dave’s drug addiction which didn’t become a problem until he met Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland who used to play Jazz Fusiion and heroine use by Jazz players was the norm back then. Dave was a violent and angry drunk and after he punched and dropped James Hetfield to the floor for kicking Dave’s dog his days were numbered and Lars and James started looking for a new guitarist
If you are trying to figure out how Dave gets his sound it is how he plays nothing more.no tricks no funky set up.its him his guitar and his intensity.thats it.this album has Marty Friedman and Dave has cut him loose like any smart music writer would do.dave is holding his own on this album.this is so many talented guitar players fail.dave is not afraid of failure.imagine one day Marty Friedman shows up to audition for Megadeth and Dave is stuck between rock and a hard place.he k ows Marty is 20 times the guitarist he is but Dave rises to the challenge and goes toe to toe with marty.and you have nick menza and Dave ellefson.marty in my opinion forced Dave's hand into making a top five trash album for all time.dave does not use any crazy setup.the noises you hear are coming from a juiced up marshall and Dave intensity.and incredible song writing.how can one man make so many great songs let alone album after album.i would argue the first lineup was the best line up.nick menza was garr sammuelsons tec.and Chris Poland is an amazing guitar player that did not have the drive to do great things.peace sells was a masterpiece.garr never gets any credit. Look up guitar players playing Chris Poland solos.you know what comes up. Chris Poland playing Chris Poland solos.his solos are the hardest by a long shot to emulate.the unsung guitar hero of the 80's
People label Dave a right winger or conservative now because of his outspoken views against government and his free speech absolutism. Kind of backwards but ya know. Divide and conquer and all that.
😮Incorrect about the Christian mother's .... A few years before this album Megadeth already had this gem Five magics was more of a fukyu music.th-cam.com/video/CO9Y4sirszQ/w-d-xo.html&si=2w0sBs7e3mKC2cH4 ...
You can't properly react to a song like this until you've listened to it properly the way we listen to it back in the day with a ridiculous loud sound system you're not supposed to just listen to the music you're meant to feel the music as well. Reacting to heavy metal on headphones😂😂😂
Such a good album... :) such a 90s liberal mind set :D The corporations are lying to you, and don't trust the government. Think for yourself. Draw your own conclusions
Pausing before every solo and every transition to replay it back in 10 seconds, let the song flow naturally ffs just talk over it instead of pausing every 5 seconds.
I only have to say, that.. DAWN PATROL is the most crap song on this album. It don't sound anything like the rest. And there's a reason. It was made by someone else in the band. Lol other than that... this entire album is TOP NOTCH. Also. MEGADEPTH! Haha for sure!
Mustaine will always be the worst guitarist in Megadeth, such is the level of every other guitarist that's been in the band, the whole group is god level
That might be the worst take I’ve ever seen, u suck, his rhythm playing is fucking unreal and while he sings, his song writing is also amazing, ur fucking stupid
You just listened to what many feel (including myself) is the best thrash metal album of all time
Close 2nd. I don’t need to say what the first is, because this one isn’t enshrined in the library of congress.
💯 Best after this Masterpiece it’s a close 2nd by Master of Puppets and Peace Sells. I mean close as in for 2nd place not close 1st.

First three albums are also bangers. On par with Metallica (I would argue that the first two are better than Metallica’s)
'deth always better than ',lica
Primus does not have a single song heavier than Megadeth my dude what in the world are you talking about?
bro, check OK Computer by radio head :)
Listened to it on repeat for years
If you are trying to figure out how Dave gets his sound it is how he plays nothing more.no tricks no funky set up.its him his guitar and his intensity.thats it.this album has Marty Friedman and Dave has cut him loose like any smart music writer would do.dave is holding his own on this album.this is so many talented guitar players fail.dave is not afraid of failure.imagine one day Marty Friedman shows up to audition for Megadeth and Dave is stuck between rock and a hard place.he k ows Marty is 20 times the guitarist he is but Dave rises to the challenge and goes toe to toe with marty.and you have nick menza and Dave ellefson.marty in my opinion forced Dave's hand into making a top five trash album for all time.dave does not use any crazy setup.the noises you hear are coming from a juiced up marshall and Dave intensity.and incredible song writing.how can one man make so many great songs let alone album after album.i would argue the first lineup was the best line up.nick menza was garr sammuelsons tec.and Chris Poland is an amazing guitar player that did not have the drive to do great things.peace sells was a masterpiece.garr never gets any credit.
A few years before this album Megadeth already had this gem
Five magics was more of a fukyu

You can't properly react to a song like this until you've listened to it properly the way we listen to it back in the day with a ridiculous loud sound system you're not supposed to just listen to the music you're meant to feel the music as well. Reacting to heavy metal on headphones😂😂😂
I feel that all the Lyrics aren't correct...
Unfortunately, Megadeth is not in the RRHOF, but ABBA is, so... there's that.
Such a good album... :) such a 90s liberal mind set :D The corporations are lying to you, and don't trust the government. Think for yourself. Draw your own conclusions
Amusingly enough Dave is a Christian these days - not the annoying kind, but he definitely found faith and is serious about it.
Dude.. mustain WAS metallica
MEGADETH > Metallica
Megadeth 🤝 Metallica
Bro you in the intro just sayin good things to the people that watch made me subscribe. 2nd greatest trash album behind kill em all for me.
Pausing before every solo and every transition to replay it back in 10 seconds, let the song flow naturally ffs just talk over it instead of pausing every 5 seconds.
Hoooooly shit so much pausing. You can talk over the music as long as it isn't an eternal rant or over a solo.
The 2004 remix sounds much better for this album in my opinion
Crack? Is it crack you smoke?
I only have to say, that.. DAWN PATROL is the most crap song on this album. It don't sound anything like the rest. And there's a reason. It was made by someone else in the band. Lol other than that... this entire album is TOP NOTCH. Also. MEGADEPTH! Haha for sure!
You need to understand how on vinyl or cassette at the time it is meant to be an intro of sorts to Polaris. Hence the similar themes lyrically in both
@@briangood2048yep rolled right in. Sadly, the younger generations will never know the joys of the B-sides😢
@@jima6545 vinyl is coming back in some regard, but will probably only be released from the remasters which is an utter tragedy
@@briangood2048 fact
Dawn Patrol is great and serves as a great interlude and opener to Polaris
Mustaine will always be the worst guitarist in Megadeth, such is the level of every other guitarist that's been in the band, the whole group is god level
That might be the worst take I’ve ever seen, u suck, his rhythm playing is fucking unreal and while he sings, his song writing is also amazing, ur fucking stupid
3/10 Ragebait
brother i want some of the shit your smoking because you must be higher than the clouds to think this
