@@TherionPalace personally I like Five Magics better than Take No Prisoners and Rust in Peace, but you're right, each and every song in this album is at bare minimum great and solid asf
I have always loved this song. Imagine being 14 years old and buying this at the music store. Bring it home and hearing it for the first time while reading the lyrics. Mind blown.
It did have a sweet chemical smell when they were brand new. And the print was so tiny you had to hold it up to your nose to read it and really breathe it in, LOL!
Same! I was around 13 and this song just hit me like a ton of bricks. That monstrous sounding voice answering back at the call vocals was just terrifying and genius, very original, and this is easily one of the greatest metal songs in history.
Outstanding breakdown. This whole album blew me away when it came out in 1990. Souls of Black from Testament came out around the same time. They both had such a dark, overpowering, mysterious feel to them. I'm surprised I didn't melt the cd's from playing them so much.
I bought both albums as well and discovered sadus about that time and death metal just blew up. I was in high school and metal manics was how I found music. Wild time to be alive!! Miss it
Well, this is my favorite metal album of all times, and I always hated when people dismissed metal for being only "power chords". I have always seen these different entonations and colors in 90s Megadeth and you can find some comments from me here in youtube praising the fact that Megadeth is one of the very few monster metal bands (with more than 20 millions albums sold) where you can actually see diminished, sus chords progressions, gipsy-jazz solos etc. We are so lucky that these 4 dudes created such master piece as Rust in Peace... here we are 34 years later still talking about this album.
This was one of my first and favorite metal albums!!! My metal head buddies at the time didn't like it, but they now jam it all the time, and understand how great it has always been.
I’m pretty sure he meant the evil prince was hiding his iron fists in velvet gloves of sin. As in, he’s a brutal, ruthless, wealthy dictator who loves to indulge himself with such fineries as velvet gloves, starkly juxtaposed with the hands they envelope, hands that have done awful things to afford such luxury.
Or they want to go on and do their own thing. Most of his band mates didn't get fired ,they either quit or couldn't handling touring 24/7/365 or wanted to spend more time with their family.( Kiko Loureia left bc he was missing his children grow up).Mustaine has all the say when it comes to Megadeth.

absolutely killer, blistering, heavy riffage, intense, groovy bass lines, exotic and epic solos, all flowing through a thought out structured and story... I may be soundin pretentious but damn what a good song
Don't forget that it has some prog elements going for it. The rhythm and solo section halfway is a really tricky one to play with that 3/4 time signature change
Hell yeah, my favorite Megadeth track out of them all. Ashamed how it was never played by the RIP lineup outside of a soundcheck. There are a few things I wanted to add however: The lyrics have inspo from the book, with the five magics being similar in both the song and the book although he did say they were different, with sorcery, wizardry, alchemy being the same in both. This song is actually really hard on drums because of the tempo and groove changes, in fact id say it is the hardest megadeth song on drums
a major theme in the novel is thwarted ambition. I dont want to give too much away (because its a great book) but anyone familiar with Dave Mustaines backstory will immediately recognise why he might identify with the main character.
id say personally to me five magics is the heaviest of rip just because of how distinct, unique and magical it sounds. the give me alchemy bit is amazing, great video.

Sounds to me like the ending is doomed, even if the hero beats the Abyss Lord, his corruption has doomed him to simply replace him. The only good outcome would be that they would destroy each other, but then perhaps many good things would also be lost along with the evil since he was a hero at the beginning.

For those with questions or comments on the truth behind the ‘magics’: The word is ‘thaumatology’, not ‘thermatology’. (Actually , even then, it’s *thaumaturgy* …) I’m an expert in Western mysticism, from the Gnostics to Paracelsus and Hermes Trismegistus. Alchemy was the study of the elements -at that time believed to be five, each present in various quantities to create different substances: (hence so many attempts to make lead into gold: both are soft, heavy metals; however, to someone who believes in the five elements theory of alchemy/chemistry, gold simply contains more fire than does lead-that is why it shines so brightly). The most desirable substance, of course, was the Philosopher’s Stone, which was the ULTIMATE goal of the practise of alchemy. The P.S. was said to heal all wounds, or-indeed-grant eternal life to its possessor. All sort of other abilities were attributed to it, over the years. One could theoretically distinguish a sorcerer from a wizard via the notion that a sorcerer possesses an innate gift, from birth, that connects him to his inner power, whereas ‘wizard’ literally means ‘wise, or learned, man’-implying this is a man who has learnt his skill to manipulate the supernatural. Of course, ‘thaumatology’-or as it is properly written, ‘thaumaturgy’ is the capability of a magician to work magic or other paranormal events, or the capacity of a saint to perform miracles. We might also call it ‘wonder-working’, or ‘miracle-working’. This is a bit redundant, no doubt. Lastly…yeah…we all know electricity isn’t magic, but they would not have known it in mediaeval times. Just as gunpowder was an invention of alchemists, as full of crap most of their theories were. It got them to mix sulphur with potash, though…and…Surprise! Gunpowder.
Electricity might as well be magic imo. I am interested in your opinion of the video I did on the song "Rapture" by morbid angel and would love to hear your thoughts on it. Also what would your thoughts be on other Megadeth songs with occult themes like the Conjuring?
I really enjoyed this, btw. I like the music theory mixed in with the description and story breakdown. I was 15 when this album dropped. I saw them perform at Clash of the Titans a few months later at what would be my first concert. Flawless performance.
