    I have another tip:
    "Design your first level, last."
    I heard this from none other than John Romero. Of course, he was talking about when him and Id Software were making "Doom", but I think it applies to game making in general. See, if you design your game backwards, then by the time you reach the beginning, you've learned a whole bunch of tricks and shortcuts, which you can use to ensure that the people playing have a good first impression.

    • @アリシア-r8f
      @アリシア-r8f 8 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Don't forget to pass a quality check on the second half (which you did first) after you have learnt. Playtest, people, playtest the heck out of your game. If not even you, the creator, enjoys playing it, no one will.

    • @RevolutionaryOven
      @RevolutionaryOven 8 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I actually taught myself that trick, because my first game (which actually turned out amazing, and all my friends and everyone I showed it to loved it o.o) had a beginning level that I looked back on once I finished the game and went "Wow I remember making this area... Holy crud it's missing so much stuff, you can see how far I've come from the beginning of this level to the end of the game. Well... Lemme go back and refine some things..." And I did. My first game is surprisingly good. Only 45 minutes, but really fun!

    • @TheGrandRevo
      @TheGrandRevo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Phenomenal tip! Toolset games such as Little big planet, Mario maker ect I've always find myself in a mountain, learning and mastering my vision in the latter half of the level or game so the beginning looks like trash and the end looks average!

    • @ChanivonKarpa
      @ChanivonKarpa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But then remember to change all you did with the things you have learned, cause if not, it could be a little disapointing, but yeah , true

  • @psielemental

    The reason why the length of a game seems so important is because potential buyers want the most bang out of their buck.
    But, times have changed. It can't be said enough: Not the sheer length of a game is important, but the amount of good *gameplay*!

Before watching this I was so worried about using RPG maker for my game, but now it feels like a good experienced friend who loves gaming and telling a story as much as I do, reassured me it's fine. All of the gameplay and mechanics tips are great and stuff, but honestly, the main killer of your average RPG maker game I've noticed is simply language. Either filled with typos, poor grammar, characters without personality in their speech, unfitting lame jokes thrown in completely killing the mood or (often) just a combination of all of the above.

    • @TheShangryLlamas
      @TheShangryLlamas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Definitely! When I see a typo in a game I pretty much immediately discredit it, even if it's a AAA game. My worst nightmare is having a typo in my own.

    • @xSilentZeroXx
      @xSilentZeroXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Most painful thing is when you have a character who's meant to speak in a Southern drawl (y'know, talkin' like this n' all that), but you're either forgetting to "translate" some of their textboxes or your "translation" is inconsistent (such as changing between outta and out o'.) purely on accident.
      It's tough, man. But yeah, last thing I'd want to do is leave those in.
      Mood, I feel, is a very important thing for my project, so yeah, I'm trying to avoid anything that may cause some whiplash there.

      Do in world linguistics bother you? I hate typos myself, but does it bug you when like, tolkien made languages for all the races in the ring series, if someone tries to make a consistent spin on language is it a dealbreaker? Im making a game where there was a precursor to common tongue that predates and is used in the naming of older locations and historical happenings, dealbreaker or no?

    That menu screen at 9:31 looks really good, with the zoom and thought bubble.
    I'm 100% behind you on not releasing your very first thing. I've played RM games that are barely even functional and the person's response to my low-score review or post is always like "It's my first game so cut me a break." No, cut your players a break! I follow a rule of "If I wouldn't like it, I'm not going to unleash it on the players." I was testing a game a bit ago for somebody and I kept getting stuck in walls. The dev's response was "I'll tell people to stay away from those walls." seriously.
    Also, a tip for people who have a story-heavy game but want to avoid an exposition dump intro:
    Flavour! Use interactive objects generously and if you have a starting party then have the other characters chime in with their opinions. Rather than have an NPC just say something to you, have the characters comment back. This builds character and setting without having to stuff it down the player's throat and since it's the start of the game they're not likely to miss it. Grandia 2 or the Wild Arms games are examples of good intro areas that I can think of right off the bat.

      The reason why I don't start with my first language is simply because I'm almost bilingual and that English is the one I prefer, but also because more people from all around the world could play it ! (same goes with Spanish because well a lot of people use it)
      So if you feel like creating your game in English then go for it and don't hesitate to have someone fluent in this language check your grammar and all that jazz

      Blackpapalink Oh, no I meant in terms of gameplay where the enemies are either stupidly high in damage, dexterity, defense, etc. Or even all the above.
      The story, on the other hand, is amazing if you took the time to find snippets of lore from items, and finding out what item belonged to whom, and who made it. Hell, even rubbish has lore lol.

    I thank you for making this video, cause I plan on making a game with RPG Maker MV, and I have been planning things out for a while. I've seen good RPG Maker games out there, and they're what actually inspired me to attempt to create one myself! If you think you can't create a great game, don't sell yourself short, just get used to what's there, make yourself better, make the best thing you can.
    Also, whoever says that "RPG Maker only makes bad games", they *really* need to play either 'OFF' or 'Oneshot', they are incredible examples of great games made from RPG Maker (OFF is probably what inspired me to create a game in the first place).
