How to make taller and better characters in RPG Maker

- If you aren't a fan of the cute chibi characters this is how I make my own characters taller and still compatible with RPG Maker. If you use anything before MV (XV Ace, 2000, XP, etc, I think this will still work, just the numbers will be different so you'll have to do the math accordingly)
The software I'm using for pixel art is Aesprite (highly recommend) but you can do this in almost any art software.
Just to recap two main points:
-Best size: 144x192 then multiply x2 (288x384)
-remember to name it with a '$' as the first symbol
I know I'm late, but I wanted to thank you so much for making these! I recently started using RPG Maker and I had no idea of how it worked, I'm glad I found your tutorials because they're easier and most helpful ones I coud've found.
hi how is it going?
I found it funny that you said making your own base models felt like cheating but literal theft, totally fine~ The base models thing is really smart actually, it's inefficient if every single asset is built from ground 0.... similarly borrowing a style and making it your own is also fine ultimately. It isn't really different than learning art techniques any other way, it's all still a form of copy.
Good artists copy, but great artists steal. That's actually a very efficient way to do it. Even people who make their own style would probably do everything in a very similar way, they'd just make their own base models. Everything after that would probably be a very similar process.
I absolutely love Suikoden II and I'm so glad you used that sprite style. It's my favorite rpg of all time.
Oh wow this is way easier to do than I thought! I had assumed I was going to need buy a plug-in or something. Now, if I wanted more animation frames that would be a plug-in, I imagine.
I love Daria and that is such a cute style. Looking forward to seeing more.
TH-cam: OOPS, there goes the monetization :v
Lol
:v
Straight to the point, easy to follow, thank you good sir
Your videos are what made my finally downloaded and try RPG maker so thanks a ton. Could you make a video about how to make custom tilesets I see some basic stuff but idk how to make grass for example lineup and morph correctly
That was super cool.
And I love the Daria look!
The sword of Mana art style is pretty cool too
Despite the default sprite size of RPG Maker being just fine for my playable characters (because they're...cats), I'll def use this tip for some human and dog NPC's! Thank you!
A year later, this is still a great video. Thanks!
did you have this app? how did you get it?
ahahha Daria game ist cool, link game daria finish????
This is really useful. Thank you so much!
Loved the tutorial
Well, you kept this quiet, lol. But it's great to see the Daria game so far. I've been waiting to see it.
A Daria game would be goated tbh
yo sick af advice. Lmao "just go to the sprite resource and steal shit" what a chad
Unironically
work smarter not harder
lmaoooo hey it's steal like an artist ok
It’s not stealing if you repaint it. He’s essentially just taking the dimensions at that point
yes. Because people have been doing that for thousands of years - we are now able to draw the breathtaking art that artists do on a daily basis today. If we didn't - we would still be stuck drawing stick men, because every single person would be discovering art from the very beginning. Art has evolved over thousands of years if not longer, and you can see gradual progress made over the centuries by just comparing art from different time periods. Do not re-invent the wheel, focus on making the wheel better or finding a new use for it
This is really well done and easy to understand, thanks! Since you're basically doubling the character size, I wonder if you could edit the size of assets (doors etc) to fit the characters, so you don't have to remake every asset? Because if you made every single asset in the Daria stuff you showed that seems like a lot of work.
Thank you for showing this resource! Should help along creation of some hopefully not-too-terrible battler sprites. For the overworld I can deal with the chibi sprites but in battles having chibi pcs fighting against more standard style non-chibi opponents really erks me for some reason
Suikoden II is literally one of the greatest RPG's of all time and my personal favorite video game of all time, so you really should play it immediately if not sooner.
just getting into this! thank you so much. huuu. when the world needed him most, he vanished.
put a $ in front of File for bigger size. Okay, Will do! Thanks!
Might try with new Sprite Sheet being redone soon. Thanks.
2:48 here is the thing...
Yes, we noted it. Zoom in not necessary xD
totally play Suikoden. It's an awesome series and it's getting an HD remaster sometime next year: Suikoden I&II HD Remaster
Suikoden 2... is one of the best games known to man..
I just started doing pixel art working on RPG maker it's been real fun I figured a easy way to make your own sprites just screenshot some old sprites use them as an outline and fill it in how you want same works for tile sets. Good video man keep them coming well you probably did 8 months ago
holy shit the king is back
Would you consider linking a download of the base characters in the description? New sub btw i would love more tutorials!
I didn't know you had a tutorials mind blown
Boy you missed out! SuikodenII is epic beyond epic!
I'm incredibly new to ALL of this, what editing software are you using to actually make the pixel art?
It's called Aesprite. It's about $15 and is probably the best pixel art software available but you can use many other paid and free ones!
you have to play suikoden ! Remake HD in October
Time to play Suikoden again xD
Kinda reminds me doing this decades ago, Im currently thinking to do this again, but Im kinda like the upcoming Steam RPG Maker Unite. Or maybe the recent version? Hmm 🤔
There are one or two cheap and awesome plugins (I think the one I use is called Sprite Extender) that will automatically resize any sprites without ANY of this work needed. The only drawback is that in some cases it might smear or distort parts / proportions of certain characters, but I typically don't have any issues with it... However, there are a really small number of other 3rd party plugins that can conflict with it: I have one that basically shatters a character sprite and sends individual pixels flying everywhere - which is great if you want to blow somebody up or disintegrate - but with the Sprite Extender plugin turned on, you will see the shatter animation but the original sprite will NOT disappear like it's supposed to... And while you might naturally assume that you could work around this by changing the sprite's opacity, that will also cause the shatter animation to disappear, which defeats the whole purpose of the effect, which means that it's pretty much impossible to combine the two plugins. But outside of that, it works wonderfully, and you can manually set up the plugin to extend certain sprites and not others.
this is solid
Hey, so I'm in a bit of a debate with whether to use bases from other games. Does it look bad or cheap? And would I need to give credits to the original game I took the base from (assuming the game is for profit)? I know that in the artist community (mostly digital drawers) it is considered "stealing" if you trace over someone else's work, so I was wondering if it's thought as the same for video game developers... (And I mean base only. Not the entire thing)
0:13 holy shit its daria
What is the app that you are using to make this sprites? it look cool
aesprite
Daria, so cool.
i like cars they're cute
They should just make this a option. It’s not called chibi rpg maker
On the side view, why does the foot only go back? Shouldn't there be a framecwith the foot forward? RPG maker reads the frames as 1,2,3,2,1, no?
You can get plug-ins that add more frames to the walk cycle. I think the 3 frame walking cycle is just to make it more beginner friendly.
@@Stoned_Coyote Not what I meant. I mean in your custom sprite sheet, you only have the foot going back, but not forward and it makes the animation look weird.
@@izeckx oh, I see what you mean when I rewatch the video.
Claire? is that Claire from Resident evil? (in your tumbnail) lol
what is the program you used to put the bases in and not rpg maker mv
The magic number is-
_144 by 192_
Hello! What software do you use in the video to make the sprites? Photoshop, Gimp etc? Thank you very much 🙏🏼
Aseprite. It has a free trial version and a $20 version.
Whens the Daria game out? :)
Wouldn't editing sprite like this immediately make them illegal for commercial use though? I'd suggest looking into the okayness of this before trying to actually use this method. It's smart though, just not sure if it would cause people problems.
No something becomes your own property if you alter it enough! It’s why collages are ok for example. By the time he’s totally drawn over it only a handful of pixels would match the original. It is inspired at most and wouldn’t cause any legal trouble. He’s really only recycling the poses and proportions.
Checkout Terraria (and a slew of 2D RPGs/games) and checkout their sprite work compared to old Final Fantasy games. You're gonna notice a "shocking" similarity lol
Can you use it in commercial projects?
How can I create a higher quality or larger the iconset or 'items' in RPG Maker VX Ace ???
but u dont show how to actually do it :(
Id definitely do this but i wanna monetize the project lmao
Thank you for the help ! Just one more question : how can we make taller door to fit with tall character ?
Yup that's what I am trying to find now
Edit : nvm, i just need to resize the door tilesets
i have a a question, how You change a character aparence in a part of Game, like... in a part of Game a character loose his ribbon making her look different in dialoge portrait and his Sprite while You arent in battle
Could we get a visual novel tutorial series?
This is amazing although I think Daria and Jane are a little too 'busty' lol.
So you lost me at aesprite i can use it but it isnt grided
Uh yeah it is. You can set the grid dude 😂💀🤦
is it possible to add more frames to character movement?
PS1 Lara Croft Vibes ngl
NGL I am somewhat disappointed that Claire Redfield doesn't appear in this video
So if i understand If you put a dollar sign before the name you can use bigger characters I was wondering does that mean you have to have a complete of all the character sprites or can you just use one like you showed
The dollar sign has nothing to do with the size of character sprites, it simply tells the program that it's a sprite sheet for a single character; If you don't use that symbol in the file name, it will assume that you're making a sheet for 8 individual characters, which is what you see on most of the default spritesheets. The only thing that determines the actual SIZE of the individual characters, is the size of the sprite sheet: You can double the height of the sheet (in pixels) to allow for characters that are twice as tall -- for a single character, the program will divide that height by 4 so that the up / left / right / down poses are all the same size / proportion relative to each other... For a full 8-character sprite sheet, the individual character height will be the sheet's height divided by 8 instead of 4, because they contain 2 rows of characters (4 characters on the top row, and then 4 more characters on the bottom row, each with 4 walking directions). You could also attempt to do the same thing with the width of the sprite sheet, but that means that your character will become wider than one square on the map grid, which can look really weird in most cases because it will overlap with any walls or objects that get too close to it.
Such a helpful person. Ty ty@@HyperNova137
could this work with mv3d? I guess I would have to adjust the camera
THANJMS
What program are you using to make your sprites?
Aseprite.
@@thechosenone729 thanks :)
does the "$" trick work with 2k3?
so u cant make a bigger beast like a behemoth from final fantasy? or in that case u gotta make the actors smaller than that class of enemy?
You absolutely can you just have to make sure it can be broken down or divisible by 48. I have a troll thats the size of 2 or 3 maps thats so tall you cant see the top of him without moving.
interesting thx@@AstriaTVTruthExposed
Thank you for this, it's really helpful. I was wondering if you could share the base sheet for us to download, it would be really helpful to beginners like me.
Can Ai make tall sprites for you?
please give your base characters
Nah it's not cheating, everyone dose that.
At least there's no chibi gundam sprites...
OMG it’s a Daria thing….🩷🩷🩷
Will you provide us with the blank character templates you made?
it would be so cool
Hey man, huge resident evil fan and I haven seen your other channel and didn't know these were connected and thought the name was a coincidence lmao. Anyway, please keep it up. Super helpful and great to watch!
I've always hated the chibi style!!!! Thank you so much
Ok, but you gotta play Suikoden II
Okay sooo…. Where is claire redfield?
DUDE U ALSO HAVE A TUTORIALS CHANNEL U THE KING
Question however - what about the collisions?
Hello! Do you have these base sprites to download?
