It depends on how much light. The NVGs have an autogate feature so there only really damaged by very bright light like the sun or if you stare at a bright light source for minutes at a time. When I am landing there is a lot going on and my hands are full So it's easier to just leave them down until after I landed then flip them up halfway through the approach.
There’s not so much a pay difference but it’s a resume booster. Having a pilot with a hand full of NVG can stand out more than somebody without NVG time. Your difference in pay will come from flight hours.

Do you shut the optics of when landing near light to protect the optics or do you keep them on?
NVGs are used in complete darkness, so they are not needed when landing in lighted areas.

Our helicopter pilot training can be completed in five semesters, which takes about 2 years.
