    My favorite one out of the four mowers I love is the recycler 22 with Front Wheel Drive by Toro

    Toro Personal Pace is a dream setup. You walk faster, it goes faster. You stop, it stops. No levers to move. Best setup out there! Makes mowing a breeze! I've been using the same Toro Personal Pace mower since 2003! I have 0.9 acre of grass to mow.

    I just bought a used Toro 22" recycler that has the front wheel drive. I didn't know what the difference would be between front or rear wheel drive, but I learned the hard way. If you are using the grass bag, you slowly loose traction as the bag fills up causing the weight to shift to the rear wheels and off the front wheels. You won't have this issue if you just use the side throw instead of the grass bag, but my grass was a bit tall (and wet) and I was leaving clumps along the way, so I decided to attach the bag. Very easy to start and a very nice cut as well. If I need to use the bag again, I may throw a couple of bricks on the front of the deck and see how that goes.

      I've seen videos of old front wheel drive Craftsman mowers but have Tecumseh Engines mounted with the spark plug facing the operator in the gas tank in the front. Sometimes I wonder if that was a lousy attempts to improve traction.

    Great video! Over here in the States the Timemaster now sports a new B&S 223cc engine. Now when the blades are engaged, the power does not drop at all.

    Toro also owns Lawn-Boy. I'm American and anytime I see Toro product I always think Spanish too.
    The Toro Motor Company is founded on July 10, 1914 to build engines for the #1 brand of farm tractors in the United States - The Bull Tractor Company. The name “Toro” is chosen because of the company's association with Bull.
    Front wheel drive mowers are fine if your yard is fairly flat but people with hills generally prefer rear wheel drive. I have a front-wheel drive mower that has larger wheels in the back. Front wheel drive is almost always use I'm always like that America.

    I live in the US, and love the older '80s and '90s aluminum deck Toros. The new models, sorry to say, will never again compare to the older models' quality. Looks like that Hayter is the last in line for substantially well-built consumer (or is it professional?) lawn mowers. Now, I want one too!

    • @campbellpaul
      @campbellpaul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Super Pro Recycler II (1994) has the Briggs & Stratton 5.5 hp Quantum engine.
      I also have a Suzuki VMG6-powered rear-bagger from 1988. From my personal experience, it is the best engine ever made for a mower.

    • @campbellpaul
      @campbellpaul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be the 2-cycle Suzuki engine. I never had one, but I saw a video of one sitting out in the snow... Started right up! Those engines are highly sought-after. Great power-to-weight ratio... Great also for hills, as there is no oil pump to worry about going dry on a canted surface.

    My dad was a mechanical engineer, and he said that the FWD mowers are easier to repair but don’t work so well on hilly ground. RWD mowers work better on hilly ground due to rearward weight transfer, but they are more difficult to work on and the drive systems are a bit more troublesome.

    Okay, a British car journalist reviewing mowers! Wonderful! And, it covered relevant models! This is as good as media gets! I'd watch Jonny review, mowers as a video series. No doubt, I'd be into that. Jonny, we gotta get you on some larger land, so we can watch you test all the land management tools. What should I use to reseed a hectare of lawn? So much fun!

  • @Mr_Tecumseh
    @Mr_Tecumseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    One other thing I forgot to mention, on the FWD version, you can adjust the cable to slow the transmission down and make it go at a pace you like and when going slower it will stay in a much steadier straight line, giving a nicer straight line pattern.

    I saw this before deciding on a final purchase. I've always bought FWD thinking nothing about it. This time I decided to pay more money for personal pace RWD. I wanted AWD but alas I wanted today not in a week. The handle is the throttle so I can make the turns at the end of a run with ease. That seems to mimic the benefit of FWD but provide a bit of traction up hills.
    I have 1/3 acre or about 1350m^2. It's RIGHT at the edge of needing a small tractor. The Time Master would have been a good fit BUT it was over double the price at around $1000 USD. If I was going to spend that much I'd guy a ride on mower.

    Toro Personal Pace model 20031. old school personal pace, tecumseh engine, electric start with bagger. man i have used my Toro for my yard and for my business for 10 years! only thing I've had to do is replace fuel lines, spark plug, and clean the carb and sharpen the blade. Toro makes amazing mowers.

  • @Mr_Tecumseh
    @Mr_Tecumseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Toro is an American company, however the common Toro Recycler both front and Rear wheel drive and the newer All wheel drive base models like those in the video are all assembled in Mexico of U.S. and globally sourced parts for the American market place now, so the Toro name is taking on more of a Latin influence you could say. Only high end Toro products are still made in Minnesota...
    The Toro Recycler is a very, very common mower over here, their are millions of them sold at every Home Depot all across this country, they are so common I must have found or been given over 100 of them that I have repaired and resold. The first generation of those Toro Recycler mowers had 195cc Tecumseh engine's, they started putting Briggs engine's on them in 2007 a year prior to Tecumseh going under. That new style deck first came out in 2009, the front wheel drive versions don't use Briggs anymore, they are putting on a cheaper Kohler Honda clone engine now, have since about 2011 on the front wheel drive models and they are very prone to fuel delivery issues. Also as of this year the Briggs Quantum 190cc L head engine has been phased out here in the USA, they are now using an OHV model Briggs engine and I can say without a doubt the Quantum was a much better design and was built better, lasted longer and are everywhere, they started making the Quantum in 1984 so it had a 34 year run, it was the most reliable, most common lawnmower engine ever built and sold in the United States of America and I would not doubt if that also includes the world and they were built here up until about 2008, now almost all Briggs sold and used here originates from China at their huge plant in Chongqing.

    • @fawkurface46
      @fawkurface46 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      while I do agree with you about it being the cheapest, I also agree with the reason they gave him for why it's so popular. I love popping the front up and being able to pivot and go. I dont like how they no longer make a speed setting other than the grab bar, my older fwd had a speed selector on the side, put it at a certain speed and it was nice to walk behind. now my new one has one speed and feels like a brisk walk or its pulling you. never noticed the torque steer he mentioned but I've also had my fwd mowers for many years so maybe there is a learning curve

  • @spider_hoss

    I'm not a fan of the height adjustments at each wheel but to each their own. I looked at the twin blade job and I couldn't justify the cost for an extra 7 inches of cutting width. I bought the front wheel drive one, and you're right it is skittish.

    The pre variable speed Hayters are the best and still go strong. The best way to look at mowers is service items cost and breakdown parts, gear box repair etc. Honda gearbox repairs are really expensive as too are Toro with two to go wrong on the AWD and they do. Hayter newer models have their fair share of problems these days. 🤔

    I could be wrong, but the engine on the Toro FWD and AWD in this video looks to be a traditional Briggs Quantum 12 ci 190cc engine.
    The front wheel drives here in the U.S had the Briggs 190cc on them for a time until they started putting the 163cc Kohler on, the RWD always had a 190cc Briggs here up until last year and the AWD in the US has a Briggs 163cc OHV check and add no oil change ever needed engine, but those all look like traditional L head 190cc Quantum Briggs engines in the video.
    Unless they made the blocks smaller on the L head Quantum format over their...
    Their using a 232cc OHV on the large 30" one over here now, their were complaints of bog down with the old 190cc which was on the 22"s until last year.

    Front wheel drives are NOT popular with this American because they can't clime steep hills. I'v used rear wheel drive Toro 22 and 21 inch personal pace mowers for many years because they can clime much steeper hills then front wheel drives(from what I hear the 30 inch doesn't like hills). I think my next new mower will be the AWD Toro, it should clime walls!

    • @thomasgronek6469
      @thomasgronek6469 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John, good point, I don't think that they are popular, they are just 'pushed onto the consumer' because that is all one can buy at the 'big box' stores.

    • @Marc2k6
      @Marc2k6 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Ossendorf Yeah front wheel drive lawnmower suck on hills and they are just hard to keep a straight line with.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Gronek The FWD is not pushed, the big box stores, home depot specifically sells both the front and rear wheel drive models. They also sold the AWD version for 1 year at the big box store, to get the customer aware of them, so they would sell more of them. The so sold that stupid Timemaster model a couple years their too. Its not their this year, because the practical home owner really only needs a 22", if you need something bigger than that, might want to visit a dealer to see all your options, now you have to go to the dealer or online for the AWD.
      Their are two front wheel drive models, all 4 same size wheels, and the rear high wheel, specifically so you can keep the drive engaged and lift up turn around and keep going.
      Their are adcantages and disadvantages to front and rear wheel drive. Rear wheel have better traction on hills, front wheel drives can be lifted and are more maneuverable. If your mowing your lawn properly your supposed to go side to side anyway, not up and down, sometimed inclines cant be avoided, if you have lots of those on your land rear wheel drive is the way to go. No or very little inclines, front wheel drive is ample. Front wheel drive ones gave a little more trouble staying perfectly straight vs a rear wheel, front wheel drive versions, front wheels wear out much faster than a rear wheel drive.
      AWD is overkill. A rear wheel is more than plenty for hills.
      Also the AWD version has a smaller engine than the RWD, 163cc vs 190cc. So a less powerful engine to have to power the blade and two transmissions.
      The AWD has been found to be prone to problems, also more maintenance, parts and mo ey gave to go into an AWD. Two trans, two belt two worry about, the RWD is more than ample, AWD is overkill and is more of a ploy for mower companies to make more money selling them and on the back and on parts and service.
      They should have at the very least used a 190cc engine like the RWD on the AWD as well, less power to run another trans doesnt make any sense.

    • @fawkurface46
      @fawkurface46 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mr_Tecumseh I dont agree with your "proper mowing" arguement. to properly mow you rotate which way you mow. I have it down to a 4 way rotation. starting from the same point each time; week 1, start mowing north to south, week 2 east to west, week 3 south to north, week 4 west to east. this is so your grass doesnt "learn" which way you are mowing and lay in that direction so it can grow a little longer before getting cut.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AWD is a joke, a gimmick. Its no better than the rwd, except two trans, two belts and a smaller 163cc engine to power it all. More things to go wrong. They had it right with the RWD Toro, 1 Trans, 1 belt and a 190cc engine. I sell mowers, the one I was selling was an FWD, the guy said he could go get an AWD for a few bucks more. I laughed and said have fun, by now its probably broke down, commercial mowers don't use AWD, only thr residential mower, its a ploy for homeowners thinking I gotta get an AWD. The older RWD with the 190 will keep up with the AWD and cut better, more use of the larger engines power going to the blade, not two trans, its a joke.

      Looks like a huge pain in the ass to purchase one in the states...just like a Morgan.

    Dude. Is the "Hayter" really a real mower. I love the British Racing Green and closed rear fenders. What to do about the name though. "Hayter. The mower that Hayts you."

    never tip the mower carburetor side down. Oil can flow into the carburetor from the engine and cause a no-start condition.
    Good review;

    The assembly of the lawn mower could be done without any problems th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend I just puzzled something about the red strange “key”. However, it quickly turned out that this creates a kind of contact bridge between battery packs and lawn mowers. An additional backup as a father of a 1 year old nephew is great!! :-)

    omg fwd in a mower :) I'll accept an Astra GTE or a Fiat Coupe but come on, this is going to understeer so badly.

    Nice video. I have a couple electric mowers myself. Even upgraded one of the batteries to 18650 cells .. mows way more on one charge now. Tesla knows what's up, that's for sure. I recommend ditching the bag and just mulching, unless you compost or something.... Check my channel for a couple mower vids if interested. Love your work man!
