I remember reading years ago Sebastian Loeb said that the 106 Rallye was the best car to start as a novice. Great handling, revvy engine, lightweight. A driver with ability will stand out from the rest.
Bought my son a lovely immaculate light metallic blue 106 as his first car. Within the first 2 hours of being let loose he binned it . Recovered it, needed bonnet, front wing, door and rear hatch door (rear wing was ok, for some reason). Saw one in a scrap yard 80 miles away the same colour, shoved all the bits in my bmw touring and fitted them next day. Cars were simpler back then.
Did the same with my youngest lads 206 1.4 16v, lovely little cars. I bought one for his older brother and 8 years later it sits on the drive, next to hi E39 540i - loves driving both.
I had a light blue 1.1 facelifted 106 as my first car. I changed a gearbox with my dad and my mate in an afternoon, I changed a wishbone in it at 17 in an afternoon, and we did a couple of other things to it that were so easy to do I've forgotten about it. I kept it for a while and then dug it back out to use at uni, but sadly the head gasket failed shortly after. Sad day, sending that to scrap, I liked that car and if I had the space and the money I'd have kept it and rebuilt it
This brought back memories. A white 1.3 106 Rallye was my first new car (M-reg). No sunroof, front fogs or centre console in mine. It stayed in the family for many years and went to France several times too. Happy days.
I got exactly the same spec as my first car to! I’ve also kept it stored in a barn for many years, and I’ve recently started driving it again. I don’t think I will ever sell it.
Another nostalgia boost - thanks Jonny - you should do an update on your barn finds to see what's happened to them. I think it would make for some interesting content.
@@steveb936 True, but that seems as much a reflection on the car buying public as it is the car manufacturing industry. People only seem to want sports coupe SUV crossovers, like the Arkana. For those of us raised on hot hatches, the 106 Rallye and Clio Trophy are high points a few years apart. I've not driven either, but I did have a rental 106 (late model 1.1 I think) and owned two Clios (91 1.1 RN, 98 1.2 RT, steady yourselves!) and they were, even in cooking/warming form, so much better than than the competition. The homologation plaque seems to list the national type approval numbers (which is why I suppose they used the letter “n”) for road cars, these were still used in the beginning of 1990s until european type approval scheme took over. And to be super pedantic, the first one on the list is actually Germany, RFA = République Fédérale d’Allemagne, with ABE-number (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis) F888. I’ll get me anorak now.

Quick tip if you have a car which has been standing, and has seized injectors. With the pump running, briefly kink the return line to block it. This will increase the pressure at the injectors a lot. I recently worked for me on a VW T3 2.1 Wasserboxer engine where all the injectors were stuck. Also, on engines which have a fuel feed and return, identify which is which by looking for the one which connects to the regulator. It's the return. The feed goes directly to the injectors. first, and then to the regulator.
Already 6:50 in i can spot the mk2 clio trophy sat there chilling LoL ❤ just sold my 19 16v and got a 197 after my mk2 clio addiction 😅😂 still at 40 year old am all about them NA hot hatches ❤❤

I had a red 1996 106 1.6 D. It came from Denmark to Sweden and was a driving school car in the earlier life. 52 hp with a towing hitch isn’t much to pull a caravan with, but that exactly what I was doing, from 0-80 km/h took an eternity.😂
A great impromptu video Jonny, worth it to see the lovely motors and the strike up clearly wasn't far away. One to revisit maybe, and get them all going!

Wow! What a throwback to my absolute favourite car I ever had, mine was M786 FGB in the lovely Bianco White. Sadly when I bought it in 98 the original Michelin steels were long gone and had been replaced by TSW evo’s which I ended up replacing with Antera Valbrem 941’s. I wish I could have that car back. Like the one in the video I fitted driving lamps which they didn’t come with. I think I may still even have the blanking grilles I removed. I’ve never driven a car like it. It was absolutely on rails!

Owned lots of rallyes, clio 200’s and clio trophies along with the cup (more like a rallye with no abs) These are the ultimate French hot hatches, a clio Williams, 205 gti and 205 rallye would top it off
Love these. A man after my own heart (i also have an unreasonable french car addiction) currently have a S1 106 Rallye as well (in white), a 306 Rallye in black, a Ph2 309 GTi 3 dr, a 405 Mi-16 Le Mans and a 205 1.4 XS. Not quite a car cave but certainly an indication i might have a problem
I'd have loved to have had a 405 Mi16, but they'd mostly all ended up being used for 205 transplants by the time I was in the position to buy one. My better half had a Saxo VTS for a couple of years which scratched the 106 itch, and I've had a black 306 Rallye for nearly 20 years now. I have a French addiction and a Vauxhall addiction, so the Clio never got a look in, which I regret now.
It probably wouldn’t have happened had we not filmed it that morning as its hours away for Jonny or me to film it with our schedules. Pushed out all the stops to make something entertaining, glad you enjoyed 👍
You've found another great barn. Clerestory windows lighting the interior but preserving privacy., A pop of green on the door, the wood cladding using empty space to suggest the gestalt of board and batten. Can't wait for the next one
I’ve had two of these cars, one was my first car ever L421 THP in bianca white.. the second was L850 WLY which was black, both cars I paid £500 each for out the trade it newspaper! Not long ago the black one was raffled on dream car giveaways…. To say I love the 106 rallye is an understatement!!
Wow this takes me back. I bought a red 106 Rallye brand new in 1994 from the Peugeot dealer in Bletchley. I was only 18 and it even came with a years free insurance. I think it did have a stereo, but just two speakers (front). Amazing car, wish I still had mine.
This is a proper barn find absolved the Clio 182 sold loads back in the day while working for Renault for 8 years we need a full series on all theses please 🙏
i bought a 106 rallye almost totally because of the way my friends handled the drive on the roads to visit my mum in scotland , he got me to drive as soon as we left the motorway because he didn't like the country roads . he was green by the time we were at the front door of her house.
Ack. Lovely. I miss my 106 GTi. Some twonk shunted me on the A34 near Bicester. :'(. A go kart of a thing. Cornered on rails. Lovely to see this. Thanks Jonny and Gordon.
As soon as he said 106 ralley i pressed the like button love this show - 106 ralley one of my fave cars ever built - but i have owned a rs200 clio and that was imo my most fav car to drive for fun but yet to own a 106 ralley even tho ive dreamed of one sins a young man.
This brings back memories, used to walk through the carpark at winchester train station going to and from school in the early 90s and we'd always spot the latest regs. Would be some awesome cars parked there, first time i saw an Impreza being the core memory but seeing M reg cars atill sticks in my mind too. Failry certain there was a black one of these with those white wheels ans red belts.
Sat here in my 106 quiksilver vts thinking of all the pugs I've owed over the years about 15 pugs! Amzing barn find so sad to see the car out of use but nice to see them dry & saved will store mine away soon! Be cool to see them at next year's pug fest!
My mate had a 106 Rallye in Red back in the late 90s. Luckily he let me drive it a few times. Boy what a chassis. It wasnt that fast but it was just so much fun and handled with gusto. Lift off oversteer everywhere. You could just carry so much speed through corners it was laugh out loud funny..Still probably my favourite fwd handling warm or hot hatch..Just belting. Good memories 👍👍
Had a white S1 106 Rallye back in 2000 and was forced to sell due to finances. Such a great car. Looking on MOT check my old one has been off-road for 5 years 😢
Jonny, you must never leave the coil or any one lead open while cranking with ignition on. It will cause voltage to rise way higher than designed and the result of that is frequently internal coil winding insulation break down and coil failure. Always place the lead end near but not touching a ground. That leaves the coil working normally and prevents damage.
They were cool little cars.... I had a miami blue J-reg 106 xsi and true to form parked it up a tree after experiencing lift-off oversteer! Loved it so much I used the insurance payout to immediately buy another miami blue K-reg 106 xsi! 😂 Lots of fun!
i do like that 182 - i had an 01 phase1 Clio 172 which in my opinion looked the best, but it was a bit of a handful, and it turned out the previous owner had shoehorned a Renault Kangoo gearbox onto it, so i moved it on quickly. I wish I'd kept it
So nice to see this one. I so nearly bought a first gen 106 rallye but haggled a bit too hard. It was glorious to drive and I must have scared the dealer senseless with my youthful driving vigour. Unfortunately he agreed my low offer would be accepted if another 106 he was expecting arrived at the garage but unfortunately it never appeared. When i checked back to make a better offer it was gone. I ended up with a more expensive xsi 106, which was great but not as much raw fun.
Amazing find! Reall fun cars, and i did codrive in one back in the day. 205 rallye had a aluminium block 1.3 Tu3s, and aluminium head, with a PTS cam, and larger valves. Also the 2 double webber 40 carbs. 106 rallye is almost the same block but with efi instead of carbs. I have a 205 rally car with the 1.6 tu5 jp4 16v block of the saxo vts, but with the 205 rallye 8v head and carbs doing about 160hp to the wheels.
I very nearly bought a brand new 106 Rallye back in 95/96, but went for the XS instead because it had electric windows! I still look back and wish i’d got the Rallye.
My dad worked as a Peugeot mechanic in the mid 90's, and they used to call these and the 205's hepatica's, because they were the first thing you saw in ditches come spring 😅
A man after my own heart! Love a French hot hatch, and the phase one 106 Rallye has to be one of the ultimates. A proper homologation special, love it.
Really interesting that Gordon says they are cheap cars 'not even worth £20k'. The lowest mileage Clio Trophy has double the miles and is 19k and a S1 Rallye for 15k with over 130k miles. Great video with some awesome French hot hatches
I've often wondered if cleaning the dry barn finds is the best idea. They've sat covered and dry for years, then get jet washed pushing moisture into everything, then probably get covered again. Dunno
Yeah definitely not. You shouldn't introduce a lot of moisture to cars that are not being driven after and will go straight back into its place of storage for prob years to come. Brake components might get stuck, you might have interior seal leaks after a long time of sitting so you'll get water into the interior and then you have a car with a wet carpet or boot area sitting in storage and create rust and mold. This is the one thing I don't like about the Barn Find episodes. It's not being done for the car's sake but for views and happy sponsors.
When Jonny said "homologation hot hatch from the mid 90s" I knew it was a 106 Rallye. I had a L reg MK1 for a few years in the early 2000s. Hands down the best car I've ever driven. Certainly not the fastest, not even close, but just an amazing car. I looked at buying another a few years ago, they're many times what I paid for mine.
My mate's red s1 106rallye and my 205xs would be neck and neck everywhere we went. On an empty bypass you could sit side by side for miles trying to overtake. One day he removed the cat and gained about 2bhp. I can still remember his stupid grin as he slowly pulled away.😢
I'd like to see Johnny road test the 106. I had a facelift 106 1.5 diesel. It had that map light i believe. Yes it was not fast but on the country lanes of Devon that didn't really matter. No power steering so you knew exactly what the front wheels were doing. Never driven a car as fun to drive as that one!
Owned a 106 rallye in black bought brand new, kept for 2 years and best car I’ve ever owned!! Now want another one but struggle to find one in black original
@@TheLateBrakeShow I’d like one, wish I’d never sold it really. Part x for a new 106 gti which I was disappointed in after the series 1 rallye. A good drivers car to thrash about, the more you drove the rallye hard the more it gave back to you. Peugeot at there finest
The one car I really wish I hadn't sold - was lucky enough to have mine from new - not massively quick to accelerate, but once you were going there was no need to slow down - so much fun!
I owned a 106 Rallye phase 2 for a number of years, it's probably the car I most regret getting rid of. Light weight, revvy engine, and a wheel at each corner. Brilliant car, really. Mine also had the fuel pump die, so I have to wonder if they didn't bother upgrading or replacing it from phase 1 to phase 2 models!

My better half had a Saxo VTS for a couple of years which scratched the 106 itch, and I've had a black 306 Rallye for nearly 20 years now. I have a French addiction and a Vauxhall addiction, so the Clio never got a look in, which I regret now.
Great episode. Please don't ever rush one like this again. This warranted a revisit.
It probably wouldn’t have happened had we not filmed it that morning as its hours away for Jonny or me to film it with our schedules. Pushed out all the stops to make something entertaining, glad you enjoyed 👍
The Clio is epic, Gordon has some really lovely motors in that barn. Lucky man.
Fantastic group of cars! Thanks for listening to the feedback re intro spoilers too. 👍🏻
What a find! In the middle of rebuilding a series 2 rallye myself
You've found another great barn. Clerestory windows lighting the interior but preserving privacy., A pop of green on the door, the wood cladding using empty space to suggest the gestalt of board and batten. Can't wait for the next one
Great little snippet of Hannah Gill music there in the intro!
Wow - had a look at the MOT history on all these cars - virtually no faults or even advisories on any test. One truly careful owner - kudos
Used to have a 106 XSi. Learned a very swift lesson in lift off oversteer. Great wee car.
Dad had a new 205 GT for 14 years. Best car we ever had.
Loved it, Jonny. You just have to go back and get the others going. Keep up the great work.
Of all the collections you've shown us Jonny, this might be my fave. Would struggle to pick one to drive home in!
As soon as he said 106 ralley i pressed the like button love this show - 106 ralley one of my fave cars ever built - but i have owned a rs200 clio and that was imo my most fav car to drive for fun but yet to own a 106 ralley even tho ive dreamed of one sins a young man.
Definitely need to try and get back there and try again and look at the others as well excellent video as usual love these type of cars
This brings back memories, used to walk through the carpark at winchester train station going to and from school in the early 90s and we'd always spot the latest regs. Would be some awesome cars parked there, first time i saw an Impreza being the core memory but seeing M reg cars atill sticks in my mind too. Failry certain there was a black one of these with those white wheels ans red belts.
this deserves a follow-up and a return visit to the other barnmates!
Sat here in my 106 quiksilver vts thinking of all the pugs I've owed over the years about 15 pugs! Amzing barn find so sad to see the car out of use but nice to see them dry & saved will store mine away soon! Be cool to see them at next year's pug fest!
Gordon is a man of great taste, I can see - so many french favorites! 😍
A mate had one, years ago-always kept it mint, wouldn’t sell it to anyone, lucky bugger,he was always smiling!
A man after my own heart! I'm in America and those are not found easily. Best I have is a mk1 golf. So jealous. Great cars and great taste Gordon!
Had a white S1 106 Rallye back in 2000 and was forced to sell due to finances. Such a great car. Looking on MOT check my old one has been off-road for 5 years 😢
Shame you never had the time to give the 106 the true barn find experience.
Great video, thanks for sharing.👍
There was a white 106 Rallye for sale at the Ford garage I worked at summer 1997. I loved it and got to drive it once - what a thing! ❤️
I had a 205 Rallye. J851WAC. My most favourite car.
I then sat in a new 106 Rallye at the Birmingham motor show. Ended up buying an Xsi L664BRY
Lots of fun!
Me too. Scary stuff when you’re young !
i do like that 182 - i had an 01 phase1 Clio 172 which in my opinion looked the best, but it was a bit of a handful, and it turned out the previous owner had shoehorned a Renault Kangoo gearbox onto it, so i moved it on quickly.
I had a basic 106 as my first car.Really miss that little car.He had some cool cars in that barn.x
Wow! These were the days when Peugeots looked amazing! thanks for sharing Jonny.
Great little cars, a friend had a mk1 106 Rallye back in the day and it was as fast as my Cavalier SRi
When Gordon opened the door; my first thought was “that’ll do that all day”
Same.
My husband said it out loud, I was thinking it and we both had a giggle. We are all permanently warped by the SSGs and I love it 🤪
This channel is one of the reasons I love Sundays ❤
I had a 182 Trophy and granted it was great other than the boat sized steering wheel, it did 174,000 miles.
Lol the steeringwheel had the correct size . That you changed it to a yobo spec midget go kart wheel is you’re choice ..
The first in a new series, Barn Car Cave Find. Great choice of cars Gordon.
Great episode, thank you jonny & obviously Gordon for sharing your cars with us 👍
I may be biased, but a black S1 Rallye is still a very handsome little car. My first car. ❤
Dunno
It will just dry off 💁
Yeah definitely not.
Good to see the Scania trousers and belt getting an airing Jonny.
Bitter sweet. I had a 405 Mi 16 ,4×4 metallic blue, 3 inch stainless pipe, all through. Painted wheels bronze . Looked the dogs .what a turd .❤❤❤🎉🎉
Could have been a 306 S16 which is even rarer.
My mate's red s1 106rallye and my 205xs would be neck and neck everywhere we went. On an empty bypass you could sit side by side for miles trying to overtake. One day he removed the cat and gained about 2bhp. I can still remember his stupid grin as he slowly pulled away.😢
Love Gordon’s motor they are proper cool cars well done to him for saving them 👊🏻
I'd like to see Johnny road test the 106.
Bought new too? You need another in your life.
