    It *is* a homologation special. Fancier suspension and a DOHC 16v engine was all done for Gp.N touring car racing.

      No, it was not. This car was made as a Golf GTi rival and was the first M43 engined car. Few years later there was an E36 318is Class2 model which actualy was a homologation special. 2500 where build of these cars

    • @Iceeeen
      @Iceeeen หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      There is no homologation special about the 318is. it just a competitor to mk2 gti, gsi and so on. 16v engine with 325 swaybars and the bigger 51mm frontdampers. Didn't even come with an lsd as standard + it used the smaller diff.
      the e36 is class II (witch I even have owned) was one on the other hand. Came with the m3 GT bodykit on a sedan.
      Economical car and well eqiped but fast, deffinelty not!

    • @gsbut
      @gsbut หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@djpierre4613you mean M42, but otherwise agree, the E30 318iS was not for homologation, that indeed was the E36.

    • @64bakes
      @64bakes หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Comments are correct. The difference between the E30 and E36 318is was the M42 on the former, and M44 on the latter. Some differences on both engines included timing chain revisions etc. Supposedly the IS has less understeer than the 325i E30 because of the lower front end weight, so with the similar suspension setup as a 325i sport the IS's were slightly nicer cars to handle in the bends.

Fixing a mates E24 635csi and I was working my way back from the fuel rail to eventually the in tank pump. 40 years worth of rust and debris absolutely clogging up the gauze filter on the bottom, preventing the brand new pump I'd just fitted from picking it up. Thanks, Jonny, for highlighting my favorite model BMW. After ten years, I sold my (350K-mile) Brillantrot 318is in 2018. However, two years later acquired a Diamantschwarz example with cloth interior and a mere 200K miles. I brought it back to life and this time, I swear to never sell it.
    As rare as this model is, enthusiasts can't seem to refrain from swapping larger, more powerful (S50, S52, S54, etc.) into the chassis. That's OK, but in my opinion, they're missing the point. The spirit of the early BMWs (1600-2, 2002, 2002tii) lives on in the 318is. And that's the car I loved first.

I had one back in the late 90's. 150bhp but so very different to a 6 cylinder. This one has some decent mileage considering it's been off the road so long. Also looks like it's had plenty of paint done as it looks like 50 shades of grey. Still awesome tho. Shame about the tank. I seem to remember changing the tank on mine. Think the have a habit of rotting out.

      Had my e46 m3 for about 15 years and added an e30 325i in the past year, which I’ve listed after since being a kid. Also sold my newer Audi and went backwards for a e61 535d as my daily, hated the e60 when it came out but love it now as my do all daily. Very few new cars appeal to me anymore. I don’t want to be forced into buying a suv as manufacturers have decided that’s what we want, an old estate is roomy, perfect for kids and tools and towing for me, and has many features a new car wouldn’t have like hud and auto dipping lights. Great for £4K and I’m not buying into a ridiculous pcp! Long term the e30 will stay over the e46 m3 for me.

    Great episode JS! Ive wanted an E30 318is since what feels like the dawn of time. I owned the E36 equivalent which is also a genuine rarity and great, revvy thing with the similar engine in M44 guise.
    I was browsing the E30 is when they were going for under £2.5k back in 2005 or so. A dad that didnt let me have one as a first car and who said "they'll still be cheap and available when you're a bit older son, but you cant have one as a first car" meant that I was too late when they started hitting silly money a few years back. Ended up settling on just the E30 318i Lux which comes with the same rear boot spoiler and 14" style 5's, but would love the real deal.
    I recently offered a bloke £15k for his 318is at a car show and he turned it down because he wanted more for it! Crazy how these have exploded in value.

    Beautiful car, and many thanks for sharing. The E30s were a very popular car during my first posting to Germany (86 - 91). I remember the Sgts' Mess running a monthly or quarterly raffle for DM50 a ticket (about £16) for a brand new 318. Several years later, I owned a 1990 320SE in Calypso Red. Possibly my favourite car... apart from the service lights 😂. Keep up the excellent work Jonny 👏🏼

    In Portugal we had the 320is, known locally as the poor man's M3.
    I think all these versions of E30s are related to the touring car homolagations in each country and exist all over the Europe, either as 18is or 20is.

      the 320is actually had the s14, and were built for homologation. the 318is, although an amazing little car, had nothing to do with any racing programs that I am aware of. If it was, they wouldn't have used the M42.

    I was in high school from ‘86-‘90 and drove several 318’s, 325’s and even M3’s. Don’t recall any 318is in the mix but I drove a 325is a few times.
    All of them were great drivers!

    A bit more research would be nice. It got slightly stiffer M-Tech suspension more similar to the M3, but those are 4-lug hubs whereas the M3 got 5 lugs, and it couldn't have the M3's track width without the arches. And as others have said, the M42 and s14 are not related. As far as being a "homologation special", I'm not quite sure, maybe others can fill in. Production was not limited to my knowledge, and the 318is was offered for multiple model years in other markets, alongside the 6-cylinder 325is. A limited-slip differential was optional on the 318is, which I'd think would be standard on a homologation special.

      Had a 318, 4 lug was brutal. No aftermarket support for suspension. It was a unicorn and not in a good way. Slow as molasses. Go compare the brz to the e30m3 specs and laugh how much is similar. This has way less hp than the brz.

    On referring to the “Witches Tit” as being “Dry”…. The Witches Tit reference pertains to being extremely cold. The “Dry” reference would be “Dryer than Gandhi’s Flip Flop” . Great Show Lads.

  • @berwhaletheavenger
    @berwhaletheavenger หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    That looks like an old 318is. So not an M car, and not a homologation special.
    The 318is was a regular 318i with the first M42 engine. This was a 16v version of the M40 with chain drive to the DOHC and it was nothing special, being used in the later E36 318is etc.
    The suspension is just regular E30 with slightly lower springs and stiffer dampers. No more than that, and nothing at all to do with the M3. 320i/325i brakes with rear discs. Standard diff and an ordinary 5 speed box. Standard steering rack.
    They were finished off with sports seats, a deeper front chin spoiler, a regular boot spoiler, dechroming, M Technic steering wheel etc.
    They were quite a nice car to give the E30 a final sales boost but they are in no way special even though owners like to think they are.

    • @wmwnwmn
      @wmwnwmn หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with almost everything you say, it's not a homologation special! My 318is broke a rear spring and I thought it would be neat to put M3 springs on it, but when looking at RealOEM it turns out they have the same part numbers.
