I don't know if there was an issue with sound for the performers... gotta be something.... because she usually kills it.... but everyone was off. None of these commenters noticed how awful that was... I mean, really? It sucked. I love her and love that song, and have watched other live performances on a couple of other clips... this one was awful. Others were ok. The film and trial run were great... everything about this version was yikes.
Girl, these were the Oscars. Not only she had a stroke a week prior to this, like others mentioned, but everyone is freaking nervous when singing live for literally 1 billion people. Did you see Adam Levine being pitchy as hell in the 2015 ceremony singing Lost Stars? A world famous performer who couldn't handle the pressure. Or Idina, singing Let it Go in 2014?
Well, the song was better in the movie, but on stage it was bad and her voice wasn't consistent, and it was obvious how much her voice had been modified in the movie, her voice was discordant.
I hate to say it, but you're right. Instead of going freeform she'd have been better dialing it down. The song itself deserved the win, but this wasn't her best.
