    As a mechanic I'd say you can do it. Definitely invest in a 4 dial carb balancer as they are not that expensive and you'll be able to set the carbs perfectly. Definitely fully overhaul the cabs with new needles seats and all orings👍

    Great chopsy it runs. One tip I can give you is with these older zx is the vacuum pipes are everything to making them run great even the smallest leak or even not having the air box on can make them run like crap. So I wouldn't take the engine apart yet do spark plugs, coil packs and check even vacuum pipe. Oh and one last thing that catches everyone out regulator rectifier are a common fault

    Good stuff Chopsy. Old Kawasaki’s are so well engineered and resilient that it makes it totally worthwhile to save this one. At the end you will have a real conversation piece that will be a joy to ride on those special Sunday morning blasts through the countryside. Well done sir.

    Looking forward to future vids mate 👍
    Before you strip the engine, plug the plugs out 1 at a time & check that they are sparking on turn over (ground them on the frame when you do so - no modern electronics to fry I presume).
    Then borrow a compression tester to check whether you’ve a ring gone on 1 cylinder (hopefully not).
    Go on from there as needed.

    Brilliant stuff. I had the same euphoric moment a few years back, when a neglected 30 year old Triumph Trident Sprint 900 I was restoring, fired up. I was also out of my comfort zone pulling it apart and building it back up, but the knowledge gained and the fun had along the way, was priceless. I look forward to your next uploads. Take care for now.

    I’ve done a ‘99 XJ600 recently, that had been sitting for years. It sounded awful and smoked on the first start but with a new battery, spark plugs, a…. lot lot lot lot….of carb. fettling (a few spare sets were required to make a good set) followed by some careful balancing and it sounded as sweet as a nut.
    The more I ran it, the sweeter it became.
    DON’T STRIP THE MOTOR 😉

    • @richardraby6266
      @richardraby6266 ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked your note about Carb fettling, I've just had close-on 6years getting my basket case ZXR750 L3 back to some sort of organised Carb / filter, pulsing, jetting and adjustment equilibrium. But I think I'm almost there!

  • @woooster17

    Tentative first steps Chops, she needs some love…but she turns over & fired up, which is a positive start!
    My ZXR has been at Raceways in Stevenage having the carbs sorted. Mine was starting, revving and ticking over fine, but bogs down when you pull away, making junctions decidedly hairy! 😮
    The carbs were pulled apart, sonic cleaned, but still not quite right. So they’re pulling them apart again, another sonic clean, genuine carb service kit etc.. Also going to check the valve clearances incase they’re a little tight.
    I reckon project ‘Green Meanie’ is a go mate! 💚👊🏼

    This is good stuff. Restoration is a form of recycling which we should all be doing more of...I really like the idea of taking something neglected, working out what needs to be done then returning it to how the manufacturer intended it to be.

    That's definitely a 1989 H1 that you've got there, that would have been registered in 1990. The fairing is H1 (different stickers to the H2), H1 black mirrors (H2 are green), H1 flat coolant rad and external oil filter (H2 is curved rad and internal filter) and the carbs will be 36mm bore rather than the 38mm on the H2. Someone has fitted a later H2 swingarm though.
    As someone else mentioned try LiteTek for the carb seals. They are made from more modern materials that'll hopefully stand up to newer unleaded fuels. They are in Thailand so you my have to order them as soon as you can because they may take a while to arrive.
    Let me know if you're stuck for any parts, I might be able to help. I've got plenty of leftovers from restos.

  • @stp7049

    Universal truth about 90s project bikes...you'll need to replace or service everything from the fuel cap vents all the way to the jets. Electrics dont last forever, so test. Check spark, compression, valves. Looking forward to the next vid👍

    Clean cam tensioner, balance carbs, run up to temp, make sure fan runs, pull clutch in and out loads to un stick plates keep doing that for a week if all good change oil/filter, clean tank put inline filter, in then wonder up and down the road, slowly.Then brakes, suspension,tyres then dyno 110 bhp if a good one 😅

  • @stickyrubbers
    @stickyrubbers ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do a compression and leak down test, then you will know the state of the valves, piston rings etc. at the very least the carbs need a good strip and clean in an ultrasonic cleaning tank but I personally would do a full strip and rebuild, then a bench test/setup before dialling them in by balancing then properly. It’s all easy stuff.
    Also if you haven’t make sure your air filter is good as it may have been a mouse house.

    I did my first top end rebuild a few months ago. Check compression 1st it will tell you if you need to pull it apart. My compression dropped bad so I pulled top end and changed rings and found 1 valve was destroyed. Changed them and she started right up, running great.

    A carb refurb and new plugs chopsy that may well do the trick also new fuel pump. That’s what I’d do rather than pulling it apart further could well sort it. The smoke and crap out of the exhaust may well clear likely due to standing for so long. Good luck 👍

    So weird seeing someone doing this in 2023. I almost feel like your messing with mine. I went through so much back in the day with the build of my special one & i built a motor for my mates H1. A bike ive been looking for since my mate was taken early. As someone said in part 1, you have a few bits from different bikes there. Awesome to hear her come to life. Did you ever see the Bloodrunners film? A guy calked Andy Sparrow did a cartoon in Bike magazine & then a film. The main dude in the film rode a modified H1. I spoke to andy a few months ago & he told me the ridder was a very young Dave Coates. The ZXR750 was a dream bike for me when i first saw one in Bristol in 91. I became obsessed. I have a few in the ZXR family. Im excited to see this series. I can't remember where in the country you are. Im in Weston-super-Mare if you need any advice give me a shout. 🤘

    Bless the dear old zxr ❤ Float valves always get gunked up, any particles will cause the float bowls to overflow. You'll need to clean the plugs again after the bike flooded, this might help it fire on all 4 properly. Do a compression test to make sure all the cylinders have similar pressure...check the valve clearances.....balance the carbs and it might run fine. The head will need to come off if oil is getting past the valve guide seals, but cross each bridge as it comes along.. it sort of runs, happy days Chopsy 👍🙂

      Love that you guys are just jumping in the deep end with these bikes! You and the mrs using a trolley jack to whip an engine in and out brings back good memories of working and improvising on bikes with my dad as a kid when you dont have or cant afford all the specialist tools. Looking forward to how you guys get on and im sure they are going to be cracking bikes!!

    Absolutely brilliant chopsy so looking forward to watching it I’m exactly same in terms of skills and you are probably inspiring a lot of others to ‘have a go’ as you say it’s a big learning curve. I had one of these back in day so it’s special to me as well. I had a 1995 L1 I think it’s was the blue/purple/black and it was my first brand new sportsbike and paid £5995 !!

    Well done lambsey successful starting!...check the corresponding header pipe if the cylinder fires....there's plenty tweeks for carbs..adjustable/shim the needle by dynojet jet kit..nice bike.

    Love these vids, glad you were able to get it started, with all the fuel poring out I was concerned you might end up being well done Lamb chops.

    Sounds good mechanically… strip, ultrasonically clean the carbs and rebuild with new diaphragms etc and balance the carbs and it should be good… after a valve clearance check/adjustment 👍
