LOl I'm 56 and when these came out wanted one soo badly but had to settle for a s/h GSXR750K which I loved. This was a wonderful period of bikes and cant believe they are now vintage, how quickly time moves!
Been waiting for this series to start !! I’ve recently bought myself a 2000 j1 ZX6R , fully running and I love it, winter plan is to strip and tart her up!! Can’t wait to see more of your green beast!
Looking forward to the rest of the restoration. I do a lot of start ups on old bikes, the first job is to quirt oil into the bore, remove the cam cover so you can refill the oil by pouring it over the cams, then crank the engine with the spark plugs out, before attempting to start it. Just use a remote fuel tank hung from the ceiling, then there will be no need to use the fuel pump which shouldn’t be operated without fuel as it destroys them. With the carb cleaning concentrate on the pilot jets as will have to hold the bike at 3-4,000 rpm to keep.
Yes!!! At last chopsy a resto project, wasn’t sure what I’d see first, zxr or hypermotard.Absolutely love your resto vids.Surface corrosion always looks bad,I done an RD years ago and that had rot in the frame and swing arm but got it professionally welded and repaired and powder coated, look great afterwards.
Doesn't look too bad Chopsy, you always get superficial corrosion, some bits can be cleaned up, other bits you clean and recoat. It's good someone seems to have serviced it, better for the internals, gets rid of moisture within the engine 👍 Can't wait for future installments 🙂
I'll be surprised if that cam cover is able to be saved, but we'll see 🤞 Some parts will be restorable, others not so much. I was surprised how bad it was if I'm honest as it was in a shed, obviously not a good one. My Y2k ZX9r was sat up for five years and had a lot done to it but was not nears a rough, I know it's half the time this was sat up, but it was outside 😂
Nice bike , i love old ZXR's. I guess you have a bit of a mix . Radiator , airbox and fairing are 89 H1 , swingarm is H2 , tacho is L model and not sure about the oil filter 😅. And the bolt in the upper engine mount was a race track mod , too much vibration for road use. Gonna keep an eye on this one 👍.
Frame looks like H2 . H1 and H2 have slightly different exhausts , H1 fits H2 but you have no more access to the oil filter , maybe that's why you have an external filter.
I got an h2, and definitely got a cartridge filter not spin on, different sump on here too.but it’s an H motor with the belt.I’m gonna keep an eye this it’s a bit of a mixer. I reckon it’s fallen on its front. Check frame straight before spending!
I used to sell ZXR parts on ebay but 6 months ago deleted my account. I still have quite a quantity. By the way that coolant reservoir sometimes get sold for £200 if you have the rubber band to it.
Looking good Chopsy 👍😮 I'm sure you'll get it up and running ! Lovely bike the zxr always liked its looks when it first came out . And the best colour the green one . Looking forward to the next episode .👍👍
A lot of people think carbbed bikes don't have fuel pumps, but most do, especially larger capacity bikes. It will run without one, but the low pressure pump (2-3psi) just makes sure it is fed enough fuel so it doesn't bog down when you open up the throttle. Put that camera down the sparkplug holes to check in there, put a little oil in them too to soak around the rings before trying to turn the engine over, and maybe do that manually the first time.
Looking fwd to seeing your progress with this one, I went through the same experience in June this year when I restored my CBR400RR which has been sat for 20 years, and thankfully no big surprises that weren't expected. Rides even better than I remember after fitting sticky tyres and replacing fork seals and oil etc. Good luck with the 750.
I've been looking forward to this project. I hope it doesn't end up in boxes like the Ducati. I really want to see it back in all its original glory and hear how you think it compares to current day sports bikes.
I've got a GPZ900 that I've been restoring for years that was in the same state as this chops, the engine is very similar. Internally it was spot on after a strip down. That pipe under the carbs was the same on mine but it was just cosmetic, all of the metal coolant pipes were shite but only one of them was unsalvageable. It's not as bad as it looks.
Watching your GX exhaust vid and comments got me to this. Cant wait for the new zxr vids. Big Kawasaki nut myself and the old man has a zxr750r k1. Quick tip re the fuel pump for your upcoming build. Dont forget you can prime it. Ignition on, into first, push the starter. Trust me. If carbs have been off you'll hear it buzz for a good 5-10 seconds. It will save your battery and give you instant starts. A gamechanger on old Kawasakis. Good luck and thanks for the vids.
Nice one enjoyed this! Especially when you were fingering those carbs. I am going to bet it doesn't start!! Which makes it more fun 😁 I'm staying tuned 👍🏼
You git! You left it on a cliffhanger! Thank you for trying to restore the ZXR 750. I remember it when it first came out. I went down to the local Kawasaki dealership to take a look at a ZZR 1100 and I almost broke my neck rubbernecking as I went past one on the shop floor. My pants became moist as I looked over it, completely forgetting for a while why I came to dealership in the first place!
Think giving it a thorough scub down and clean might make you more optimistic, much of the cr.... grime will be superficial and you might be surprised at it's actual condition. Whatever the case, it'll need a strip down so a parts washer might come in handy! 😀 Really looking forward to seeing it progress.
Projects like this have ended up being my most enjoyed bikes. I have two 1997 bikes I've bought back to life, the most recent a vfr750 (standing for about 8yrs) which I use fairly regularly. Molasses works well on rusty fuel tanks, make a solution mixed water and leave to soak. A tip picked up from Mr Millyard 😊. Look forward to seeing the progress, I think this bike is recoverable, and you'll really enjoy it once complete. It's a great thing to do.
First thing I would have done is spark plugs out and have a look in the cylinders with that fancy camera, spray some fogging oil in and turn it slowly by hand
I had one of these, but H1 ,the red/grey/black colour scheme with a J2 engine. Removed the fairing, and it went pretty well! Could take a gsxr1100 in a street race from the lights, I only weighed about 9 stone then. Good times.
Looking forward to starting work on my H2 as well, my ZZR11 is nearly done so that’s the next one in-line. I’m not based too far from you so once they’re both up and running (year or so, maybe longer) then get in touch. Just shout if you need any steerage as I’ve done a couple of zxr’s before. 👍
Ah interesting, what you have dear sir is an H1 with an H2 swingarm. The H1 has the oil filter from the bottom of the cooler, the H2’s have an element type filter in the sump, different carbs as well.

During lockdown I managed to get a 1988 GSXR750 slingshot started after it been parked up for 19 years - surprisingly east if that makes you feel any better chops…. 👀👀😆
Get them professionally cleaned. You are the professional , chops. I don't have much carb experience but I rebuilt cabs off a v-45 magna. careful take pics. just do it. Cool bike.
Hi chops, I have a zx7r which has a lot more corrosion in the tank than what yours seems to have, can you let us know what your tank guy recommends please, I hear white vinegar is a good cheap solution, cheers joh👍

Interesting to see this pop up in my suggested vids. I have a ZXR Collection. I'm a Kawasaki Fetishist 😊. One of mine I built in 98. She's a Q plate from birth & very special to me. I had an alternator belt go on the M5 by Droitwich once. I pushed her all the way to the truck stop. That got replaced with a McDonald's years ago. I laughed when you said about how fiddly the air box was. Yea there's a few whacky things on them. Still my favourite bike. Please don't break it for parts. Fancy a ZXR750 meet up & ride out?
@LambChopRides I don't get much time to watch too much as I'm sat here editing all the time. Your one of the ones that hasn't let it all go to your head which is awesome. I'm glad I tuned in last night to see your still you. I love that. I love Bruce too. I'm looking forward to seeing this series. 🤘
Most of the alloy corrosion looks like surface corrosion so soda blasting should brink that back to new. I did have a tank restored on an K5 Honda 4 which internally was much worse than yours and it cleaned up fine. The diaphragms in the carb tops may be a problem as they are pretty thin material. So long as not fuel has got up there or moisture they should be ok. A ten yr old battey will be almost suphated up, tossit and get a new sealed unit. The rest of it depends on how much you're willing to spend on the project. Might take you a couple of years but you'll have one neat machine at the end.
Yeah. Been waiting for this. I had the same model in candy blue. Sold it in 99, needed the money to add to the house deposit. The only bike i regret selling. Mortgage paid up in a couple of years, if you take your time you may have a customer.
JIS screwdrivers will be very helpful for this project. Give Mavis a job to research them. Morgan tune carb balancers/synchronisers also wouldn't go a miss

I remember pulling into Paddock Wood Kawasaki centre on my green Kawasaki AR50 aged 16 and drool over these in the showroom!., can’t stop laughing about the bum quote at 3:00! 😂😂
You probably checked mate but the pilot jets will be the key to starting it, the mains could be totally blocked and it should still start and run up to 20% throttle really as the slides won’t move until there is decent vacuum anyway. Ref the pump, I’d honestly just replace it now and save yourself bother, then you have the new one then. Best of luck mate
Chopsy get some built hamber deox c you just mix it with hot water fill tank to the brim seal it up and leave it over night it will remove all the rust.
John finish this one probably not end up in the cupboard,,John frittzell bike in the basement man 🤢🤢🤢🤢 iconic bike be good to see over the winter 😮☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
Good luck with restoration. Japanese bikes can cost a fortune in parts and more than bikes worth. Hopefully you will get some free stuff. Small thing but bolts re plated as soon add up . I went down the old British route T150v as parts so much cheaper and many uk made. While obviously not a good a later Japanese stuff for a ride in the Cotswolds with my wife just 😎. Good luck chops very hard work doing a restoration and not spending 3xbike value.
Interesting... But I wouldn't trust it unless I had it split down into molecules almost. First looks tells me that you will know what to do for the rest of the year. At least on all the rainy days. Don't give up, you will be able to run it and ride it.
Cant quite see the valves, if only you had an inspection camera!! Looks like the camera should fit the spark plug holes, check the condition in the bores. 👍
Alternator belt??? Ha ha. Nice to see you out your comfort zone Chopsy. Get them carbs cleaned and rebuilt yourself and don’t be a bolt on princesses 👸.
I was looking to add a similar old school sports bike like this and could not believe some of the prices even poorly maintained versions are selling for.
It's a nice bike. A bit of dirt on the outside of the engine is to be expected. I've brought far worse than this back from the dead. Good luck with it...

@LambChopRides no worries, good luck with the resto. Looking forward to the series when you get round to it

unfortunately the camera was only with me for one day to check the tank or would have stuck it everywhere hehe.
For anyone not making youtube videos about the restoration, that bike is beyond saving. Hats off to you.
You must have a Crystal Ball.
Tank looks good to me. That's just surface rust. Fill it with a chelating rust remover like Evaporust and it will be as good as new.

I feel old. I remember when this bike launched and all the excitement from dreaming that I could ride one.

I remember pulling into Paddock Wood Kawasaki centre on my green Kawasaki AR50 aged 16 and drool over these in the showroom!., can’t stop laughing about the bum quote at 3:00! 😂😂
I remember how I thought how beautiful this model of kawasaki was many years ago
Are you doing a maeving review? I was looking at one for commuting but im about your size and thought id be too big for it.
Yes I am 👍
You probably checked mate but the pilot jets will be the key to starting it, the mains could be totally blocked and it should still start and run up to 20% throttle really as the slides won’t move until there is decent vacuum anyway. Ref the pump, I’d honestly just replace it now and save yourself bother, then you have the new one then. Best of luck mate
yes absolutely you are correct!! caught me out as you will see in the next vid
@@LambChopRides haha do I get points for being able to see the future? Haha
Keep cracking in chopsy, will be fine!
If it was a Suzuki I would say yes it will start but a Kwacker, not so sure. Superb vid chops as always.
Why you looking in the inlets with your phone when you have a inspection camera?
Inspection camera went back long before the rest of the video was recorded unfortunately
Excellent looking forward to the next vid chops
Thanks Mark, on the members section already buddy 👍
My mate has just rebuilt one there an awesome bike
The suspense is rising!. You meany press the button!. 😂. Looking forward to more, team green it’ll be fine .
Chopsy get some built hamber deox c you just mix it with hot water fill tank to the brim seal it up and leave it over night it will remove all the rust.

Left it on a cliff hanger. Get the next video out ASAP. Fingers crossed for a good result. See 👉 fingers crossed 🤞
Are those tyres BT 56’s?
Hope you do restore it, lovely bike.
Could have had crocs and socks on,a hangable offence 😅
Gotta love crocks an’ socks in the garage!
It runs within two or three cranks ,runs good too.
Hey Chops, great vid. Hope your time on it pays, looking forward to the final. You can doit😎👍
Thanks 👍😁
Good luck with restoration. Japanese bikes can cost a fortune in parts and more than bikes worth. Hopefully you will get some free stuff. Small thing but bolts re plated as soon add up . I went down the old British route T150v as parts so much cheaper and many uk made. While obviously not a good a later Japanese stuff for a ride in the Cotswolds with my wife just 😎. Good luck chops very hard work doing a restoration and not spending 3xbike value.
Has it got the wrong clocks on it ?
Let the battle commence!😭🤣👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Interesting... But I wouldn't trust it unless I had it split down into molecules almost. First looks tells me that you will know what to do for the rest of the year. At least on all the rainy days.
Don't give up, you will be able to run it and ride it.
Cant quite see the valves, if only you had an inspection camera!! Looks like the camera should fit the spark plug holes, check the condition in the bores. 👍
Haha yeah unfortunately camera went back ages ago or would have used it 😕
Henry Cole and Allen Millyard would have had that running up and down his driveway in 15 minutes!
Haha I'm sure! 😆👍
“Bring the thunder!”
I hope you put that old oil back in it until you prove the motors good.
Alternator belt??? Ha ha. Nice to see you out your comfort zone Chopsy. Get them carbs cleaned and rebuilt yourself and don’t be a bolt on princesses 👸.
Honestly it doesn't look too bad at all, I've seen much much worse brought back to life
ok good to hear!
I was looking to add a similar old school sports bike like this and could not believe some of the prices even poorly maintained versions are selling for.
Yeah certainly going up! That's why I can afford to spend a bit on her 👍
@@LambChopRides She’s gonna be badass and get a LOT of attention from other riders once she’s out & about.
This bike has years of life left in it Chops. Just don’t take years restoring it. Good luck.
I always thought the H2's had green mirrors?
Pure evil ending it like that Chops! 😅
You tricked us, you naughty boy. I bet it will start. 1990 [Nick J]
🤦. Will you now have two incomplete rebuilds? 🤔😬. Oh well, I'll be glued to seeing how this progresses anyway. 👍
not for long!!
Hope you have a fire extinguisher in that new set up? Your no really wanting to be called *"BBQ Lamb Chopsy"* soon ! 🍖
It's a nice bike. A bit of dirt on the outside of the engine is to be expected.
I've brought far worse than this back from the dead. Good luck with it...
Will it go the same way as the super moto once you strip it down ? Doomed to live in bits in a box for eternity!
What about the Ducati?
Soon 👍
Might invest in a box company, there going to be doing well soon 😂
