Perfectly penned lyrics that illustrate broken trust and fits so many different situations: romance, abuse, friendship. "...step on a kid he'll grow up hating you..." -- aren't we all like little kids in the beginning? Jump in with childlike enthusiasm - trusting, believing in that special person until the confidence is tainted, broken and grows into sorrow, distrust and resentment................***sigh*** ---- yep, feeling this song and it fits my 💔
My father is a narcissist. I’m 42. Still hurts. “Step on a kid, he’ll grow up hating you” screams out to me. “Waiting to see the better side of you” hurts.
This one reminds me of when I was betrayed by someone I loved, and it has been a hell of a road back trying to regain that trust. Some things just never go back to how they were.
You were almost kind, you were almost true Don't let me see that other side of you You have learned in time that you must be cruel I'll have to wait to get the best of you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you? Wonder what difference does it make......Either way You were almost kind, you were almost true Why give away that other side of you Happens every time, so it must be true Step on a kid, he'll grow up hating you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you Wonder what difference does it make....Either way Were you ever kind, were you always cruel? Who's ever seen that other side of you? Happened every time, so it must be true? Where did you learn it's either him or you? You were almost kind, you were almost true Don't let me see that other side of you You have learned in time that you must be cruel I'll have to wait to get the best of you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you? Had an ex like this in college. Took her back and she cheated on me...again. I swear she got off on hurting people. Listened to this band a lot back then (early 2000's) so this song reminds me of her. "Poison in everything you say." and "Where did you learn it's either him or you?" lines in particular.
dedicated to my older brother. we got along as small children but at some point he decided to dedicate his free time to making my life a living hell. even when i moved out and had my own family he would find ways to hurt me. i will never understand it either. the majority of our family and friends have no idea what a cruel, hateful monster he is. the moment they turn their back or leave he says awful things about them - to me. he knows they would never ever believe me if i told them what he's really like. it just wouldn't match his "character", so i must be lying.... knowing him and his propensity for cruelty and mean spirited fun has changed how i view everyone. i can't just accept someone as they are because he taught me that some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.... could very well have a dark side. as a result, everyone stays at arms length if not further away from me. i had to completely remove him from my life. we're always told to forgive and forget and i tried to do that just for the sake of our mom - she knows what he's like but ...frankly she's a wimp. he was out of control and she never tried to stop his bullying.. i believe you can forgive someone who hurt you but you'll never forget just like you don't forget that fire is hot or that dogs bite and cats scratch. the pain was a lesson and people aren't any different. and...some people are better off being loved at a distance. the worst part was hearing how HE justified his treatment. telling me to get over, i deserve it, or i'm too sensitive and stupid. i believed that for a long time. turned out he was a liar and only wanted a punching bag. i never deserved to be called horrible names, never deserved to have my dog taken to the pound while i was away for the summer, never deserved to have my stuff set on fire or be forced to clean up his messes. i did hate him for a very long time along with everyone who turned a blind eye. child abuse doesn't always have to come from a parent. sometimes it comes from your own siblings. i will never know what it's like to have a protective big brother who loves and cares about me. and i admit i'll always be jealous of you kids who found best friends in your siblings. And for anyone reading this who has committed these crimes against their younger siblings or just some random kid in the hall..... you have no idea the damage you've done and how deep those scars go or the fact that your abuse is like a ripple that turns into a wave. it will extend to others in some way. ask yourself why you felt the need to hurt them, maybe you're not as nice as you think you are....
People notice you. Hang in there. I believe that sadness and joy are two sides of the same coin, connected by love. True apathy doesn't feel happiness or sadness, so intense sadness (depression) is intensely feeling the loss of something. But in order to feel that, you MUST know what having it felt like, otherwise how could you feel the loss? That line of thinking has always helped me. Also remembering that melancholy is the happiness of being sad.
I'd say this is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Been a fan since 2003!
Me too. Ever since around the first time I watched Life As A House. 👍
You were late to the party. 🎉

You love them, but trust is a hard thing to get back. Been there. I wish you well.

Reminds me of my emotionally abusive aunt, right down to everyone thinking she's so great... Even though she treats everyone else poorly too.
If someone notices this, I’m still alive and fighting depression
Good luck! You are valued and loved! :)
