    It's ok. It happens to all of us. So many of us wonder..."are we actually pretty?" after someone takes a photo of us and it looks nothing like we thought we look like.
    It's quite soul crushing. But are you actually really ugly? Or is there something psychological happening which is messing with the truth.
    Looking forward to you delving into this video because it blew my mind as much as it's about to blow your mind.
    So many simple explanations for this. There is a part two video coming next time on how to start falling in love with your pictures. And it's nothing woo woo talk. It's also psychological. I can't wait to share that with you too.
    I think I may have slightly fallen in love with the topic of what makes us beautiful and what doesn't. So strange but I guess it accidentally became a job with my Advanced Selfies and now delving deeper into these reasons, my mind is getting blown. There are so many factors that alter the way we see ourselves. Truly fascinating.
    Let me know what you thought of the video. Did parts of it also blow your mind? I look forward to chatting in the comments about all this.

    You know, what’s interesting too is that right after taking a picture or video of yourself you may think you don’t look so great....but if you look at that image weeks/months later you think you look better than you thought the day you took the picture/video

    Also don't forget that your phone's selfie camera is a wide angle lens, which distorts your face quite a lot (because it's really close to your face), it makes your face seem larger. That's the reason why photographers use longer lenses to shoot portraits! So what you see in the mirror actually looks more like you than a selfie ;)

      Giancarlo Altafini im sorry but thats bullshit ... iPhones ‘Seflie’ Camera has a 35mm focal length. Its not really that wide and it’s the same like many many photographers use for professional portraits ... so the mirror is not what you look like its how you face would look like if it was ‘mirrored’ quite obvious actually

    Here’s one thing I’ve noticed. If you stand in front of a mirror with other people, compare what they look like in the mirror to what they look like in real life. They always look exactly the same. Even though their reflection is flipped, they look no better and no worse. So surely mirrors can’t be that inaccurate.

    • @fertilityqueen7880
      @fertilityqueen7880 4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      that's because you're exactly right there's a lot of misconception out there. It really depends on the lens you're using and camera phones are the worst at the starting our faces so what you see in the mirror is actually far more reality than anything else

    The mirror is actually more accurate. The camera distorts and flattens your face and your body to fit the screen. All the mirror does is reverse your face. I have seen people who look better in person than they do on camera. And some look worse in real life. When I am video chatting someone, I notice that they don't look anything like their real life self at all. Also remember that the camera adds a few pounds to you. I remember video chatting with someone and they thought I gained weight when in reality i lost 5 pounds (cultural difference...they were complimenting me). I also have people thinking I'm taller but when they see me in real life they are shocked that I am shorter than they thought.

      I've definitely been there and sometimes I still am. I've found that therapy and opening up to friends helps because they help you question your insecurities that you're so sure of. But that isn't really a definite fix. Just know that you're allowed to take up space whether you like yourself or not. Your opinion is just that and you're still as worthy as everyone else whose appearance you like. Being attractive isn't a rent you have to pay the world for being alive. ❤️

    I was researching this not that long ago, as I think that the whole "I look better in the mirror" thing REALLY messed with me growing up and caused me to feel so self conscious of myself in photos until I went through my own self care journey. I think it's SO FASCINATING! Because it's totally our brains wiring mixed with our perceptions of society and ourselves. And it's so strange to think that we will NEVER SEE OURSELVES! Like for real. We can see everyone else but we will only ever see a photo or reflection of our own bodies. We can't really truly ever look at our own faces and that to me is WILD to think about! (and kind of really cool at the same time because being alive is super groovy and like wow the fact that we even see at all is pure magic)

    Although I don't think this was her intention at all, I feel like this video was kind of a downer for most of us...if this is the only thing you know about this topic. However, I'm one of those people who feels like my pictures are A-W-F-U-L and the mirror version of my face is SO much better (not strikingly gorgeous or anything, but compared to my pictures). So I've done some research here and there about it for a few years, and the official conclusion is that there IS NO official conclusion. This video almost makes it seem like it's a flat-out "your mirror is wrong and your pictures are right it's psychology" but actually, most of the reasons she listed have been listed in other research I've seen....defending the opposite position. For the experiment where people picked the more attractive face--there have been several articles I've seen that say people actually think they're LESS attractive than they are. I truly think that just depends on the person, the culture, etc.
    Not to be a hippie about it, but personally I feel like because mirrors are more a more natural image, they're more accurate. The appearance of photos can be affected by SO MUCH that we don't even think about--camera lens, color hue, quality, etc. In a mirror, it's a real-time, real-dimensional version that's just showing you what's literally THERE. It can't really "fool" you with all these other factors as much as a photo can. And on top of that, it's important to keep in mind that a lot of our ideas about attractiveness come from a standard that society has put in place. Whose idea was it to say one person's features are more attractive than another's? Why? Beauty standards have changed drastically over hundreds of years. A century from now, my big nose and broad shoulders might be the highest standard of female beauty...who knows? xD
    I didn't mean to write so much! Sorry! x) But basically, in the end, this a subject that needs more research. Don't assume the ugliest picture of you is how you really look, because there's no proven reason to assume that. :D

      I agree with you and also something to consider is that you can recognize bad photos, if you take a picture of someone it can come out different than what you're seeing, and that comes down to lighting, shadows, the lens, etc. Nothing is organic in these digital photos unless it is purposely edited that way before or after the photo is taken. A perfect example is taking photos of extreme darkness or extreme lightness, like a sunset or inside a movie theater. The cameras we are using to take the photos are not nearly as good as the human eye is, yet we are trusting it to duplicate it perfectly. The pictures never come out looking as good as it did through your eyes unless you have a professional camera, like she does.
      Looking in the mirror might flip your face the other way but it's still you. If you stand in front of the mirror with someone else, your mom, dad, friend, etc, look at them through the reflection and they look exactly the same as if you turned to them and looked at them straight on. The flipped image does nothing more than flip it, and saying you look like your photographed self and that is your true self is just... not accurate each and every time, again thinking back to "good" and "bad" pictures. Her opinion on this is very biased because she is a self photographer with very impressive equipment. She prefers to see herself in that way and probably sees herself through those photos and videos more often than a mirror, which isn't a bad thing but it should be addressed. There are arguments to both sides but a real life reflection is a lot more true to how you look rather than a digital copy of it.

      You're so true in every word. I don't look good on camera but everyone around me (I mean honest people like my family and friends) says that I'm pretty. Also I had times in my life that I felt insecure about my small lips because nowdays girls with full lips are getting more into light but that don't mean that they portray the most beautiful kind of woman. As you said beauty depends on the culture. In japan/korean culture girls with small lips are called beautiful but the opposite is in Europe or USA (not including every culture). It's the same with the nose which you mentioned. In japan/korean culture girls tend to be more like dolls with small lips (as I said), small nose and big eyes. But in indian culture girls with full lips and big nose are called beautiful (most of the indian actresses has big nose and full lips) so don't you ever feel you are not beautiful because of your nose x

It’s only February and I’m already starting to like the way I look in photos. No, loving your face does not make you narcissistic. After all, it's one of the few advantages of youth. But going to a concert and spending the whole time staring at your phone to see how many likes your selfies garnered may be. Going to the Louvre and instead of looking at the wonderful art, taking selfies of yourself....well yes that might be. Let me ask you this. Can you walk past a mirror in a mall without glancing at it? I'm afraid you're presenting a false dichotomy. You don't have to hate the look of yourself; just maybe spend a bit less time admiring yourself, a bit more time looking at the world around you, instead of worrying if your "friends" are impressed by where you ate tonight.

    Photos also flatten every visible angle of your face into a single, still 2D image, whereas in a mirror it reads more "3D IMAX" version to you because you're moving and can see the different angles and planes and shadows as you do so, which your brain interprets as a 3D model. In comparison, the 2D image can often look flatter, fatter and just a bit weird, both psychologically and visually. (It's kind of how Picasso painted all the angles of a face into one forward-facing image, even the ones he couldn't see...just not quite so extreme.)

  • @PADARM
    @PADARM 5 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    A good-quality, flat mirror is going to show you very accurately how other people will see you. Try looking at someone else standing in a mirror next to you- besides the fact that they’ll look a little odd because you aren’t used to seeing a mirror image of them, they’ll look pretty normal! There is nothing to distort (hopefully!) how your eyes perceive the world- they’ll just be backwards.
    What makes the camera different are two things: Scene compression due to focal length and depth of field.
    All camera lenses have a focal length- this is (basically, simplified) the length from the front element of the lens to the film plane. Why does this matter? Well, the longer your focal length, the more scene compression you get!
    As you zoom out (shorten the focal length), things in a photo get wider and farther apart. Closer things appear to stretch more than things farther away. This is NOT a flattering photo! It’ll make your nose look big and your eyes look small!
    Most portraits are shot with a telephoto lens- that’s generally regarded as a lens with a focal length longer than about 80mm for a 35mm camera. This causes scene compression, which means that items seperated by distance from the camera appear to be closer. It also ‘thins’ out faces and is generally considered to be more attractive.
    This is the reason most portraits are shot with an 85mm or longer lens (on a 35mm camera!).
    For reference, ‘about’ 50mm is generally considered to be a standard focal length that more or less accurately matches what our eye would see in the same location. (Again, all of this only applies to 35mm, or ‘full frame’ cameras)
    The second item is depth of field:
    Depth of field is the phenomena where by items which are farther away from the point of focus of a lens become out of focus and blurry. This tends to isolate the subject and is generally regarded as attractive.
    I’ll try and shoot some photographic examples of these concepts today and upload them for you to see, but a quick Google search should also help. (Unfortunately I’m out of time!) by Jacob Allison, works at United States Navy

    If you actually want to see how people look at you, place a large mirror in front of you, whether it's one you have at home, or the closet mirror you have in your room, then grab a mirror that you can fit in your hand. Place the side of the mirror onto the big, closet mirror you have, perpendicularly. Then, look into the mirror you're grabbing, and you'll see the mirrored, MIRRORED version of yourself.

    • @DavidHudson
      @DavidHudson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It ain't! The mirror is the real depiction of yourself. It's just flipped and only you would notice because of the sudden difference. Cameras, (mainly iPhones), distort your size massively depending on the angle, as well as distorting the lighting of the room everyone would really see, colour and shape of proportions. The mirror is completely you because flipping the reflection will mean nothing. Phone cameras are the most unrealistic version of you that you could ever find actually. Try standing next to someone you know in the mirror and if you see no difference compared to in real life, then that proves to you that a flipped reflection means nothing when it's somebody else. Videos are the most unrealistic because they have a fuzzy low quality which butchers you even more.

    People look bad in selfies taken with cell phone cameras because the lense on your cell camera completely distorts your image, stretching out and enlarging your nose and narrowing your face--basically a fish-eye lense effect--which is not "the real you" at all! When you reach out your arm to take your own picture, it only improves things slightly. You need a really really long selfie stick or a tripod in order to fix this. I know objectively gorgeous humans, who've I've only seen very unflattering photos of, because they only take these kinds of close-up shots of themselves. Not anything inherently wrong with that if course, but if you're consistently disappointed with your selfies, get a super long selfie stick and play around with lighting and angles... the difference will be dramatically better, and also much closer to what you truly look like!

    I have a couple things to add! I’ve done a lot of research on cameras/photography, and was shocked by the amount of distortion different cameras and lenses can impact the appearance of your facial features (widening, fish eye, inverting, etc.).
    Also, in regards to the study of attractive/unattractive self awareness; unless one is a TH-camr or very often on camera or in photos, I think the average person is less familiar with their appearance, since we see our own face less frequently! Plus, people tend to prefer pretty or attractive “things/objects” (proven in studies and ingrained in society), so it isn’t surprising that people were more drawn towards and chose a more attractive version of themselves.
    I’m really loving your videos, Sorelle! They are very well put together and researched, and I gain a lot of knowledge! Thank you so much for the high level of work and attention you put into your production, it really shows! I’m looking forward to upcoming videos! 🤗🙌🏼🌻🌼

    Just reading through some of the comments here is quite heart-breaking. I’d like to reiterate what others have already said: a lot of the information in this video isn’t very accurate at all.
    For one, I really think the study finding that people “think they’re more attractive than they really are” came to a very questionable conclusion based on the results of an odd experiment. When you consider the serious body image issues that currently plague our society, the conclusion of this study almost seems irresponsible. There are people who are already excessively critical of themselves, struggling with low self-esteem, and seeing a much less attractive and valuable person than they really are, who hear that message, that they “think they’re more attractive than they really are”, and it tanks their self-esteem even more.
    Secondly, telling people that photos are more accurate than the mirror and that’s what they “really look like” ignores a lot of factors and is probably killing peoples’ self esteem. As others have already stated, camera distortion from lenses, the “flattening” of an image by the camera, the wonky lighting that cameras pick up-there are a lot of things that make us dislike our image in photos, especially ones not taken in the most pristine and carefully planned conditions.
    I’ve suffered from some pretty severe body image issues due to this exact issue, hating photos of myself but liking what I see in the mirror. I’ve received compliments on my appearance and I’m generally confused as to why anyone would compliment someone who looks like my (un-mirrored) self. All this is to say, I know how crippling this phenomenon can be to peoples’ body image and sense of self-worth. For anyone in a similar boat, be very wary of anyone telling you that the image you dislike is “just how you look”. The impact of the “mere exposure effect” mentioned in this video is very significant, and photos aren’t half as truthful as they’re made out to be.

    I think I've read before that front-facing cameras on phones also distort our faces by 30%, not full fish-eye but the curve effect can make us look weird if we take selfies too close to the lens! Which sometimes leads people to think they need plastic surgery to "perfect" those distortions.
    I'm the kind of person who takes a lot of selfies but never posts them.. makes me too uncomfortable thinking about if others see the same or more flaws than I do 😂
    Prefer taking self-timer shots from a distance, which means I really need to try some of your advanced selfie techniques! 😍

    Thank you Sorelle for this self realization moment. For so long I’ve hated the way I’ve looked in pictures that others are taking of me. And now I finally see why. I was only happy with myself in pictures I took of myself through a mirror because I wasn’t getting the real and raw image of me. But now knowing that it’s simply because I’m used to seeing the “unrealistic” image of myself & not the real version of me. So thank you Sorelle for helping me realize this and making me aware, now I can be way less hard on myself when seeing a true photo of me. ( I apologize if this doesn’t make any sense but still thank you) 🤗 Can’t wait for the next vid!

    I used to be photogenic when I was young. See my profile pic with this comment. Now I don't think I'm photogenic at all and nothing has changed about the way I look at the camera. I can't take a selfie either. I definitely think I look better in the mirror. Men have told me that I look much better in person than in my photos. So my photos don't reflect how I really look.

    • @oOBubbleStreamOo
      @oOBubbleStreamOo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's also what I hear from people. I seem to look better in real than on the photographs. And the people who tell me this don't have any reason to lie. I was told about it by men AND women.

    I’ve always been more comfortable taking photos of others than photos of myself -unless I’m taking the photo of myself. I guess it’s because I’m such a hard judge of who I am and what I look like, but I can easily find beauty in other’s perfections. Why I can’t seem to do that about myself is beyond me. Btw I’m currently camera-less, do you have suggestions for any cameras that won’t break my bank?

    Taking a selfie with someone else’s phone is a nightmare!! Especially if it automatically flips the picture ☹️ I experience this everytime, that is why I want a selfie taken with my phone so before sharing it I already flip it back to how it supposed to like, like how it looks before clicking the snap button.
    Before snapping the photo, you look sooo good, and then while reviewing it, why does our face looks wrong? eyes look smaller and twitch. Lol ok 😂
