The biggest “problem” with the 159 is that the best engine in its series is either the 1.750 petrol or the 2.4 diesel. The V6 was never considered to be a good petrol as it was made by Holden (sacrilege for any alfisti!), and the 2.2 petrol is too slow, as is the 1.9 diesel. I have driven the 2.2 and thought it was horrible, and I own a 2.4 since many years that I’ve pushed on the autobahn without problems up to 230. The top speed (on gps) that I’ve reached in the 2.4 was 245 km/h, meaning that something must be wrong with this V6 as it really seems slower than the 2.4 diesel that has 60 bhp less. Still a very pretty car, and I get plenty of comments on mine despite its 200K km on the clock and it’s tender age of 14 years.
For the 159 the best option would be the 1.7tbi engine and then tune it with a stage 1 tune. But like you said, v6 engines are becoming more and more special even if they aint that fast

@@215alessio Lets be real, that questionable deal with nasty GM V6 (and some inline 4) engines was already set in stone, when Marchionne came to FIAT in 2004. However "Marchionnes V6" for Alfa Romeo is the F154 - in Giulia & Stelvio QV.
@@alfisti93 It really isn't nasty. It's just strangled by strict emission standards, and in the case of the car in the video, strangled by carbon build-up. Now, the JTS is definitely not as enjoyable as the Busso, but it's much better than people make it out to be.
Early direct injection petrol engines are known for clogging up with carbon, and losing power as a consequense... maybe this one suffers from that? The 159 was hugely compromised but it’s a beauty and the interior still looks very good today
Last Sunday I accompanied my fourteen year old son (159 employee 😁) to the "Quantum of Solace" rally on Lake Garda: 1 Aston Martin on the run and a pack of 70 Alfa 159s in tow, along the tunnels between Salò and Riva, bringing the scene of the life of the film oo7. 😂 funny. Unfortunately this 3.2 is the JTS engine that we call "mezzosangue" is very bad... this car and the Brera with the Busso V6 could be the best ever made after the GT
You should try a 159 ti TBI around some corners. It solves the weight problem and I consider it the perfect engine for this car. But unfortunately, it's not a v6. :(

I’ve got this car in a sedan/saloon. I’ve had GTAs and other bussos. This is a much better cruiser and more reliable. Doesn’t sound as good but still sounds great.
Actually the (low) mileage IS the problem. It was probably used for lots of short trips and caused a lot of carbon build up which is choking the engine
@@Johan-fw8re I believe that is also a problem, but I am afraid that the bigger problem is that the engine, at it best, does not achieve nearly the same power as it says on paper. This was even a problem with the old JTS engines in the Alfa Romeo 156 and GT. I may be wrong, but I think that’s the main problem, regardless of the weight of the car.
@@goranvego3 The issue isn't Alfa Romeo overestimating their power outputs - the JTS did make 260 hp when new. But carbon build-up has completely strangled this specific engine... thank you direct injection.
It should have come from factory the way one German car dealer modified it. They put a supercharger in and by that created about another 100hp giving it a total of about 360hp which fits it very well. But the car isn't as heavy as many people tell. Sure thing 1760kg is a lot, but if compared to other mid-class cars of its era it isn't that heavy. An Audi A4 oder Mercedes C-Class also weigh about 1600-1800kg depending on the trim you chose.
they had a GTA version planned with a V8 - it was on the nurburgring a few times but it got cancelled after the economic crash. such a shame because that wouldve been awesome
Alfa Romeo has a spirit , a car that makes you to feel an amazing experience , isn't about top speed or fast acceleration , and those engines aren't a true Alfa ADN , And doesn't expect something impressive form those engines . The Gulia Qv V6 2.9 is a true Alfa ADN
This car might have some serious issues between the direct fuel injection system and the lambda probe (emissions measurement). Wrong infos between both systems, which result in poor performance.
That precise alfa you're having on your channel may have some engine issues, because if you look on other 3.2 159 accelerations on you-tube they're much faster that that.
De intern gebruikte materialen zijn wel mooi. Veel hedendaagse auto's hebben goedkoop glanzend zwart plastic in het dashboard etc. Dat krast enorm. En ziet er m.i. erg cheap uit.
I still regret mine sometimes... but then I remember why I sold it, the insane fuel consumption, worst is in the city at slow speed, I had an average of 22l/100km, very difficult to go under 11l/100km cruising on highway at legal speed. Sold because of that, I wasn't able to afford the thirst of this inefficient nightmare (refuel twice a week at some point)
I own the V6 sedan and, yes, it's a heavy ass car. It does 0-100km/h in 5,6sec but it doesn't feel like it. And fuel economy truly is absolutely awful. Despite all the "bad" stuff I still love it to bits. I call myself an alfista and it's my first ever car. I plan on doing stage 1 and fit a catback or something for the exhaust. There's potential!

I actually want to take mine (same spec) to the dyno. It seems slow even for a heavy car. I actually think its more due to the awd system than the weight itself. I estimate it would come back with about 200 to the wheel max.
I love the 159 Alfa Romeo, very nice car with good immagine. Unfortunatly, the car was havy likes a tank. I think Busso V6 was a motor art,the V6 you test is poor of Power. Max, congratulation for your Channel,i like this. You have ti test the 159, 1.750, 200 hp..it's more focused for this car. Thanks.
Let's look at the good sides: it is pretty heavy due to it being a very safe car for both front and rear passengers, 5-star rating at EURO NCAP, plenty of options on it (depending on the trim level you have), the 3.2, as far as I know, it is pretty reliable (never driven one tho) if you maintain it according to the service book, plenty of space inside, the sportwagon model is usually 50-60 kg heavier than the sedan version. The basic models have around 1.500 kg, they were designed to be comfortable, not sporty. Even so, they still pack some power under the bonnet.
Hi guys I want to buy my first car and idk what model. So I love the sound of the Busso V6 (GTA Models). It could be a Brera or 159 too. I want to stay below 20k€. Are the models good in this price range?
I would really advise you to go for an alfa 159 1.9 jts with 160hp, or 2.2 with 180-190 hp. You can also get the 1.8 ti model but don't go over 10-11k€. I would go for the 1.9jts (160hp) with low mileage, very good consumption too! No need to go higher engine capacity as their performance doesn't change accordingly. These cars, except for their breathtaking design, are amazing for corners, if you wanna do mostly highway driving they are nice, but their sound insulation is not the best. For twisty roads these are like the Ferrari of the "poor"! I love my 156 and my father's 159! Forza Alfa!

It is not much slower, but the JTS has taller gearing and much more isolation material, which reduces the impression of speed. It is also slightly slower, but that is down to the couple extra kilos of the car.
No way that engine has 260hp...
I have 2.4 SW and can confirm what you are saying. Also 2.4 response is better, its torqueier hehe.
@@queenhelebron5717 it‘s a crap engine. especially compared to the real alfa v6
Absolutely the most beautiful wagon made!! I'll take a Q4 manual in green with tobacco interior! 😍😍
Driving a slow car fast is another kind of happiness:)
For the 159 the best option would be the 1.7tbi engine and then tune it with a stage 1 tune. But like you said, v6 engines are becoming more and more special even if they aint that fast
The 2.4 JTD 5 cylinder is good too. Avaible with awd and with a ECU it arrive quite Easy at 250-260 cv
No. V6 aint fast. Just look at the Giulia qv at 510 hp. Peanuts.
@@Mr995pippo oh yes i have one, its an automatic gearbox but igdaf, its so fun to drive. I'm thinking to manual swap it but ive heard that its very difficult even for poeple who understand alfas and everything, expesnive too, but my 166 is my love 😍
I have an Alfa Romeo 159 SW Q4 with a diesel engine 2.4 jdtm. 5 cylinders, 210hp. When i was on the high-speed road from St. Petersburg to Moscow, reached a speed of 210 km/h, but i felt that Alfa could do it faster, and I couldn't :)
Hello from Russia, sorry for my English. Good luck, AutoTopNL!

One of the best looking wagon ever.
Early direct injection petrol engines are known for clogging up with carbon, and losing power as a consequense... maybe this one suffers from that? The 159 was hugely compromised but it’s a beauty and the interior still looks very good today
For sure. Such low mileage on a 13 year old car - it's pretty much a certainty.
My thoughts too. Decoke it and put in a oil catch can.
It's strangely slow, too slow.
I've driven one and it had no hazzard reaching 240 km/h!🤔
Carbon build-up due to low mileage. Affects all direct injection engines.

Damn it, I`ve had 215km/h on the clock of my 120HP diesel Croma. However this Alfa is a beauty and... it has a V6.
I’ve got this car in a sedan/saloon. I’ve had GTAs and other bussos. This is a much better cruiser and more reliable. Doesn’t sound as good but still sounds great.
Obviously there is a problem with the engine. This seems more like 160hp not 260hp.Probably due to carbon build-up.
AutotopNL nailed it
Nice to see you taking on these old horses! Well done!
Yes this Alfa is very nice ... I have Alfa Gt (2005), very nice too. 3.2 busso is master piece!
Man, how can it be so slow?! It feels like something with 2x less power.
Wonder if the engine has a problem, as mileage can’t be to blame.
Actually the (low) mileage IS the problem. It was probably used for lots of short trips and caused a lot of carbon build up which is choking the engine
@@deramon1000 Shorts trips and more importantly, huge time intervals between drives!

The transmission in that drivetrain eats allot of horsepower, it would be a treat to se how bad it is 😁
@@Johan-fw8re I believe that is also a problem, but I am afraid that the bigger problem is that the engine, at it best, does not achieve nearly the same power as it says on paper. This was even a problem with the old JTS engines in the Alfa Romeo 156 and GT. I may be wrong, but I think that’s the main problem, regardless of the weight of the car.
@@goranvego3 oh, i se 🙂
@@goranvego3 The issue isn't Alfa Romeo overestimating their power outputs - the JTS did make 260 hp when new. But carbon build-up has completely strangled this specific engine... thank you direct injection.
Commenting as we need to know
Bro in this video the 159 is slow because of the age of the car normally is a little faster mine makes 240km/h and 0-100 in 7 seconds
Work of art
Something is wrong with this engine a have the same Alfa in black and it is not slow matte
It really has some type of engine problem, th acceleration is neraly the same as 1.9 JTDm and much slower than 2.4 JTDm.

Unfortunately the 4 celinders diesels car benz , bmw doest much better. 😶 really disappointed with this V6! With 260hp!! with such a sporty sound
Are the timing chains reliable on these as I heard they can stretch over time and need to be replaced
I had a 2011 with a turbo on it and that was fast as flip boi but some of the older models aren't as fast but they are just as cool in my opinion
Hey, but it has a V6! 😂😂👍🏼
Ok ok you can drop this off at my driveway!
Very nice lines. Looks really good! 👍😁
It's a true alfa romeo, what could be wrong?Hummmm everything... Kkkk
Slow,but have a V6..KKKKKK
This car is absolutely beautiful.

How would you fancy driving my 156 2.4 Ti Sportwagon, running 350hp. I am planning a European trip next year, I have 4 alfas which I will be taking

Max, congratulation for your Channel,i like this. You have ti test the 159, 1.750, 200 hp..it's more focused for this car. Thanks.
It feels quite slow for 260hp (1700kg as he said in the video. A Saab 9-5 Aero (also 260hp) has about the same weight and is much quicker.
+ 3.2JTS in good condition goes actually faster :)
BTW: Mine has written 1805kg in documents (SW Q4)
I don't think anyone will buy it after this review.
But hey, it has a V6.
Well, they reviewed a broken car with 30% less power than it should have, due to carbon build-up.
Really surprised they didn't notice it...

And purely the block is from GM, everything else is designed by Alfa. stoichiometric stands for the ideal ratio between fuel and oxigen. In my opinion this should have been part of your research.
