- What would a MODERN 1986 Porsche 959 look like? Let's find out. Porsche 959 is a sports car manufactured by Porsche from 1986 to 1989, first as a Group B rally car but later was slightly redesigned and engineered to become a street legal Porsche and in this video, I’m going to play around with what the Porsche 959 could look like if it was built today. I’m going to redesign it into a 2021 Porsche 959.
The Porsche 959 was the car that inspired Enzo Ferrari to build something better, something quicker with the F40.
The F40 was quicker but not by much, however what the F40 didn’t have was a leather interior, air conditioning, radio and other luxury features that were standard on the 959.
Let’s jump into Photoshop now because there are some design details
In its first year in 1986, it held the title as the world's fastest street-legal production car and it was considered the most technologically advanced road-going sports car ever built and the first proper supercar.
The 959 was one of the first high-performance vehicles to use an all-wheel drive system, and it worked so well in the car that Porsche chose to make all-wheel drive standard on all versions of the 911 Turbo starting with the 993 variant.
The water-cooled twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine produced 444 hp and was an incredibly compact, efficient and rugged power unit for its time. It had a top speed of 198mph with a 0-60 time in 3.6 seconds. The quarter mile was completed in just 11.8 seconds
The way Porsche installed the turbos on the 959 is pretty unique. Instead of having each turbo bolted on each cylinder bank, the 959 had a sequential turbo setup which gave the car a much smoother power delivery and less turbo lag.
Personally, I kinda like turbo lag. It's exciting to see the rpm creep up 3-4000rpm and then take off like a rocket. Safe and comfortable? Probably less than if you wouldn’t have it but who cares, turbo lag is fun.
The original Group B rally car was introduced in 1983 but the street legal version of the Porsche 959 was unveiled at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show as a 1986 model. However some technical issues caused it to be delayed by over a year.
The car's aerodynamics were designed to increase stability, as was the automatic ride-height adjustment that became available on the road car (961 race cars had a fixed suspension system).
Its drag coefficient was as low as 0.31 and aerodynamic lift was eliminated completely.
First customer deliveries of the 959 street variant began in 1987 with a price of $225,000 USD per unit. This was still less than half what it cost Porsche to build each one which seems to be pretty normal when it comes to experimental supercars like the 959.
Production ended in 1988 with the 1989 model year. In total, 337 cars were built.
At least one 959 and one rally version called the 961 remain in the Porsche historic hall in Stuttgart, Germany.
In 1992-93 Porsche decided to build 8 additional cars out of spare parts from the manufacturing of the 959. 4 of these were in red and four in silver. These were built specifically for Porsche collectors and were also a lot more expensive than the earlier 959s and these 8 92-93 models are considered to be the most desirable of them all. But good luck finding one.

Imagine taking a 918 for rally racing ... Porsche was different back then
You're right. But it was AWD so it kinda makes sense, but they did use 911s for rally racing so they were crazy. The 918 could work cause it has a very small footprint.
Well, compared to the Street Version of the 959, the Rally Version of the 959 was heavily lifted. If you hop over to google and type in Porsche 918 Rally you'll probably find some renders of modified 918s that definitely look like they could do the Rally Paris-Dakar. The thing is: Rally Racing has also changed. Top Tier Rally cars are as far away from Street cars as F1 Cars are so you can as well just construct a car from scratch.
@@kooooons 961 was also very different. But if they changed the 918, which they won't do it could work. They've strayed away from Homologation and now they're competing with a race car in Le mans. Their strategy's changed.

@@kooooons Rally version of 959 was not heavily lifted. The DAKAR version was lifted AF tho. And you can see stock street 959 lifted as this car has adjustable hydropneumatic suspension. Street 959 still has some off-road features like crawling gear. This car is mental.

I think having a go on the fist option (taking a modern 911 and sculpt the 959 lines) would be a interesting exercise to see. I reckon the end result would be very different

yes, up until 10:21 it looked good. The angle between the roof and the A-pillar should've stayed roughly the same. On the finished version the roof looks like it's from a Beetle

Literally perfect right up until the roof line change. I know a modern re-design would have the the modern roof line, but I think it looked soooo good when you had all the other features tweaked but still had the OG roof line.

The whole point of the 959 was a car built for all environments. It was the car that ushered in many technologies we use today in modern cars. So redesigning it, making it lower, sleeker etc is not what the 959 is about. Some things are perfect the way they are. The challenge for my friend is to design a car that is better than the 959, that's the hard part.
I think one thing I would’ve kept would be the centerlocks to stay true to the original car and of course the fact that other higher end 911’s have pretty much moved to these, otherwise very nice interpretation of the 959.
