A note about the things not being a hive mind, while in close proximity, they can detect each other even knowing some of their absorbed victims before connecting to each other and transferring their knowledge becoming one with each other before disconnecting and going about their day.
They can absorb several entire humans(I believe one got up to 11) into them and still maintain a normal human body in size and shape. They do this by compacting themselves becoming more and more dense which makes them more and more durable and way harder to kill even with fire. The easiest way to find them would honestly be with a weight scale as they would get really heavy very quick but you better hope they don't change into a hostile form because they can become enormous very quickly with one human becoming a large murder tree of faces in the comic.
Also they can hold on to knowledge during the assimilation process by downloading it into you or as mentioned above, connecting to another thing who still knows but they can lose information with one in the comic leaving her body as just a head and to survive she transformed into a fish which deleted her memory for some reason.

The thing about the Thing is that, all it takes is for it to infect an animal like a dog or cat. Ones that are known to lick their owners, being on their face, or maybe an open wound, at that point, it's game over. It wouldn't need to blow its cover because it could easily spread.

This is a great video! except for a small detail: the videogame sequel (which has been made canon by John Carpenter himself who favored the game's narrative unlike the comics) introduces the idea of some people being inmune to the thing's infection process, like the main protagonist (who says ingame that he should have been infected by now but his body rejects the thing/virus(, especially after the culmination of the Cloud Virus arc where the main protagonist goes off on a helicopter with MacReady. The comic book sequels (which are not canon) also mention some people being inmune for some genetical reason, but as those are considered spinoffs inside the canon, they dont truly count. That could mean that some people would be able to at least try to prevent the end of the world, given that the MC of the game. I dunno, I thought it was a neat detail that some people could at least survive the thing longer than others.

Book version. It’s made clear humanity has a chance to win because of how violent we are.
It seems to be smarter and able to camouflage itself but it doesn’t have the physical advantage it does in the movie.
And we rip it apart multiple times with our hands.
It’s more a case of can the violent and paranoid side of us win over a smarter and more clever enemy.

So talk to it. It had likely travelled millions of miles, who knows what the beings on the ship wee doing to it. Crashes and freezes, wakes up to human poking holes in it, cutting pieces off-it's likely hungry and pissed, possibly even frightened. Wilferd Brumley's character said something I found interesting "I won't hurt you." it was also building it's own ship under his lab. Maybe it just wanted to get the hell out of here with no intentions of converting Jack Schitt. Our assumptionsn are based off a group of humans who are also scared and attacking it. No guarantees of anything but, choices-attack and piss it off and lose anyway or attempt to talk to it once it has a form and mind that understands our speech. Hell, might even set us up for Interstellar Travel since it has the knowledge.

Its cells were durable enough to survive anything short of burning, but it could not infect through skin contact was able to be overpowered and ripped apart by a large group of humans using their bare hands. So that is why it didnt just kill them all like it seemed capable of in the films but didn't.
