I'm 27 and watch this channel from time to time since everyone in their lates 20s/early 30s still obsess over dorky oversized streetwear fits which I think as you get older your style should evolve into something more contemporary like this
Agreed! Appreciate you!
Most men dress like they're still 12 years old. Dressing well makes you stand out. Heck....just going out without a hat on backwards will set you apart from the crowd.
@fishin4bogey I agree. Something a friend of mine told me back in high school that stuck with ever since is "dress your age not your shoe size"
I love the fact that there's no intro and you just get right into the topic!
Thank you!
FWIW, i thought the intro that you used to have was cool.@@40OverFashion
me too!
"Tan Chinos with black or white shirt", "Grey denim with earth-tone shirt"...That's the kind of specific advice I need. Thanks, John.
My pleasure!
You’ve changed my world! I have told my friends in their 20s 30s 40s 50s and 60s about your channel. Keep up the great work. Now I must go and look stylish! 😂
Thank you very much!
I'll add one: go spend some time cleaning and polishing your shoes. To me, it's so relaxing going through the polishing process on a few pair.
Did that as a kid/teenager. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be doing it in my 50's.
Can't thank you more. My 5 11, 165 lb (75 kg) out of style looks have changed. I've been following your advice for some months. Am now dating an unbelievable beautiful girl. 👍
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
I gotta say. Found you couple weeks ago and been consuming your content as well as a few others. All I've done so far is add some button up shirts and better shoes to my chinos and man what a difference. Get so many compliments
I get tons of compliments on my 10.00 watch with a leather band from Walmart. ... All the time😂😂
I now love visiting my tailor and the dialed in fit on my clothing.
As a personal trainer to Lincoln UK’s men over 40 years of age, I’ve noticed they generally have a standard colour scheme regarding clothing. Usually blue / navy, cream, black. Also my clients understand the essential health and physical fitness requirements to live well and look good 🫡
I tailored my three dress pants. They fit great. Thanks to you for getting my ass to tailor.
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
Men don't often ask other men about where they get their clothing. However, I often get questioned about my brown suede (genuine leather) bomber jacket. You should see their expressions when I say, "$30 at Goodwill."
Nice!
John this is awesome! Our appearance is everything, whether people like it or not. It's kind of nuts that people don't embrace that more. #legend
Thank you Eric!
Great advice! The extras are what makes any outfit. Tailoring is King!
Absolutely!
I agree about smart watches but I really like the functionality of the Apple Watch. What if I get one with a silver aluminum case, and pair it with a matching brushed aluminum band, and select a simple (classic) watch face?
A little thought and a little effort makes for a sensible and summer smartly dressed appearance, notwithstanding the Italian obsession to, "espesatura." and "peacocking" with white pants worn with colorful linen shirts and/or various colored suede loafers, and what not.
All within good taste for ones own sense of confident flare, I suppose.
Wonderful Job John! Found my sport coat for the tailors! Much appreciated advice. Curious if you ever thought of doing a style video - in a thrift shop? Style challenge?
Funny, you mention that. A friend and I were just talking about doing something like that. Stay tuned!
I’m 62, 6’2”, 195 pounds, and you aérea my go to on fashion. Thanks so much. I have had some luck shopping at Poshmark for high end clothes. Went from 280 to 195 over the last three years, bc of health issues. Cheers!
You wear great colours for your hair and skin color - did you ever do a video on different colour combos for different skin/hair tones (ok, I guess we mostly have greyish hair!)
I am not enthusiast of a round neck sweater worn without anything with a collar (shirt, polo,...) popping up to dress the neck.
First time here, great video info! When you're wearing the cardigan you had on a brown pair of shoes, were the shoes from Thursday boots?
Yes they are!
@@40OverFashion thank you, please keep up the great work!
Thanks again John, as always spot on!
Appreciate you!
a co-worker laughed when I told him i had a couple of Seikos.
more full him.
So I shouldn’t wear my Bruce Lee shirt at 60?
what about beach / pool wear. what's your advice on sandals?
4:54 to those who do want to buy a luxury watch like a Rolex or the Omega John wears IT IS PERFECTLY FINE if you like it and you can afford it without any issues, buy it, don't listen to people saying you don't need to do it, it's them projecting their taste and concepts onto you, and you aren't them. Remember that.
Went to a funeral a man was wearing a hoodie and sweatpants. Unbelievable
John, I never tire of your videos. You, in my opinion, offer sage, solid advice. I like that, on occasion, your videos overlap. They and you reinforce and remind your audience of the importance of style, first impressions, confidence, etc. I believe you are the best at what you do. Always a class act. Love the sweater!
I appreciate that very much! Thank you!
100% on point.
Is that a rebar pants hanger at 3:44??
It’s a padded trouser hanger that I got from Amazon. So much better than a regular triangle hanger.
Hey John, the white sneakers, and the brown/white sneakers... what brand are they? I'm looking for some decent minimal sneakers. I bought a pair of Thursdays sneakers (white with gum sole), and while they look great, the regular size was quite narrow for my foot. I guess in the future, I'll need to order the wide sizes with them, but what brand were you showing in this video?
Both are from Thursday.
Thanks John, great video as usual, you're a life saver mate
My pleasure!
Do you ever think to pair your cologne like you do the colors of your outfit? Example if you wear green, pairing with a green scent with minty notes.
Im into cologne and never hear about matching your scent to the colors of your wardrobe. Makes sense to me though. Not always, of course. If Im going to the beach, I might wear an aquatic scent, but not necessarily a blue outfit.
I haven’t ever thought about it in terms of colors. I generally consider the situation I’m going to be in, and whether it’s the daytime or night time. That helps me select a fragrance.
I've been working on my closet for a couple weeks. Way too many clothes and shoes I was no longer wearing were directly to the donation box.
How many shoes did you have
@@maxlemusa3520 I had 16 pairs counting shoes and sneakers. I left 4 shoes and 3 sneakers.

I'm a big fan of your videos, John. One thing I don't understand, though, is why you start so many videos by justifying your message to us. We're watching your channel, so we're already interested in improving our image. Seems redundant to justify why that's a good idea.
Still a great video though!
You’d be surprised how many people watch my videos and still think clothes and appearance don’t matter.
Love the orient shout out. Great watch for the price.
Absolutely agree!
For me if clothes become too small, they become pajamas or house clothes for "no one" to see😂😅. Enjoyed "commentary" as usual and thank you😊❤🎉💯🙏.
Glad you enjoyed!
A closet purge! I am thinking that I need to sell things that: one day fit when I lose a few more pounds, and stay that way; I still like it (despite having it for 10 years +); I paid X for it, so it makes no sense to just give it away, and hanging up in my wardrobe is fine. lastly, time to get busy!!! Great video John, as always!
Thank you very much!
The trouble with dark shirts is that they fade and look shabby. And cheap ones fade faster. Keep them for special occasions.
Washing in cold water can help prolong color fade
John, do you have any videos on how the best way to shop for clothes?-in actual stores, not online, best type of stores, how to deal with salespeople, etc
Not specifically at length, but great suggestion! Thank you!
Great primer on wardrobe building. I also might add shirts with small patterns or a color-on-color like mini-checks or stripes and even florals that from a distance appear almost solid and only up close are discernable. I still love the crew neck sweater as cardigans do not drape well on my body. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you!
I agree I do consider what I am wearing and how I come across to others. I need a sweater like you are wearing were can I get one like that? Thanks
The one I’m wearing is from Weston Bouchér.
Saying people SHOULD care about whats on the inside is just silly wishful thinking.People make judgements constantly its wired into us for survival. Your appearance is a reflection of who you are. Your habits, your tastes, your life efforts, your priorities. And you are judged accordingly
Well said!
@@40OverFashion men need to be honest. We apply these standards to women and we should understand they apply to us as well
John, another great video. Your tips have really helped me these last few years. I have a video idea. How to dress etc while at places like Universal Studios ,Disney, and just general amusement parks. Obviously there are more locations and types of places. But focusing on say styler and comfort while not being too over the top.
Hi John good to see you again and some great basic points .
Regards Christopher Barker
Appreciate you! Thanks for watching!
Good video John. I think that most people have the wrong view of smart watches. You can dress them up with a luxury band of your choice, and make them look appropriate for most social events. There are a ton of reasons to wear a smart watch, but for those of us over 40, the main reason would be the health data tracking. I have quite a few clients that are over 40, who track their blood pressure, ECG, etc. I know plenty of healthcare professionals who mention that having this data is important and can save someone's life. I can speak first hand, in that my Apple Watch alerted me that I was in Afib. I was able to get to the hospital in time to be properly treated. I was also able to send the cardiologist the ECG and HR data that my smart watch collected. The more data your healthcare team has, the better care you can receive. Don't get me wrong, I love luxury watches like a lot of people, but for most non-formal situations, I'm wearing my Apple Watch, it truly is a lifesaver.
I'm a little younger, but I agree with this sentiment 100%. I have bought a variety of different bands for my Samsung smartwatch and I will dress it up depending on the occasion. I mainly use it for tracking my steps, workouts, heart rate, and sleep.
Absolutely understand the value for health data. I guess my point is that when it’s time to dress things up, the Apple Watch is noticeably out of place.

I am in bro
Hi @John, I understand that you have started gyming. Where do you want to reach and by when? How are you re-imagining your wardrobe for the new fitness journey as well as after reaching the goal.
That might be a topic for a different video. I do have some goals, and I will end up gaining a little weight, but the main goal is to stay lean.
Thanks for your reply. I anticipated that you will probably address it in a deservingly dedicated video in the future, nevertheless, asked. Looking forward to it :)
Posting earlier n earlier…
Ha! Trying to get some of that East Coast audience before they get too busy! :)
@@40OverFashion absolutely makes sense. Guess I’ll probably never be first 👍 again. If I am than I didn’t get a good nights sleep. 😂🤣 your numbers better since?
Another clothing item that i want is a nice quarter zip sweater. I've seen some nice ones from Barbour. I should make a future wishlist of clothing items i want.
Absolutely! Make a list and hit the mall. Only get the items on your list unless you find something you absolutely must have. The list helps keep you focused.
@40OverFashion I pretty much prefer shopping quality online retailers. The mall retail stores here are not really a good option for mens clothing.
Good video. Great to see you doing videos again on clothing and back to basics 👍
More to come!
Good stuff John. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
John, Great video like always!
I appreciate that!
Great video John!!! 🔥🔥
Thank you!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks John.
Of course!
It's instinctively impossible to not care about what anyone thinks.
Trust me mate, i don't care at all what others might think, whatsoever
@@khalilunited1930 do you have any children? Mom? Dad? Someone you love?
@@andreleverettejr3747 Yes, they are probably cringing about your dress but don't want to incur your anger.
@bettyweller1487 with no anger behind this statement, wait your turn, someone is still ahead of you in line in this specific conversation.
Unless you’re a sociopath, but yeah otherwise you are correct.
You’re looking fit and trim. I’m currently going through my closet as I’ve lost a couple pounds. I’m trying to rotate in the good stuff. No matter what I wear, when I look in the mirror all I see is a prime candidate for a neck lift. 🫤
Ha! That’s what turtlenecks are for! :)
