I know the feeling; when Visceral Games was shut down, I feared it happening to BioWare; back then, I held hope for the studio, because of the legacy they made as makers of strong RPGs with strong writing. Now, I understand why EA shut down Visceral; it was a mercy. Now, with BioWare, it’s a necessity they be shut down or radically changed and detoxed of the activism that’s swiftly ruined their reputation.

They had a boss who made them work 12-16-hour shifts, 7 days a week for a few months, without any break (alongside other assorted toxic behavior). In retaliation, my friend and his colleagues spread the word to all their associates, warning them not to apply for jobs in that team.
When the boss found out the reason why the team wasn't getting any more applicants, he went full tyrant and started threatening 'legal action' against his subordinates. Result? Most of the team eventually resigned. The company had enough, and fired the manager for all his toxicity. AFAIK, they still haven't found replacements for all of the vacancies yet.

"Psychological suitability for the workplace" is a perfect way to say it. A lot of people who are too narcissistic to understand that the entire office (and all 8 billion people on the face of the Earth) do not have to conform to their ideals.
There should be psychological screenings of employees at these companies, along with various skill tests to gauge their level of ability, to better shift them to the relevant departments. Instead of their modern hiring practice, which is "do you hate the audience for your games and feel the need to inflict your worldview on people who are easily and undoubtedly more intelligent than you? Yes? We'll make you a manager and put you in charge of our social media account!"

    • @sungrandstudios

@@sungrandstudios I think the ability to work with others rather than against others would be beneficial to a company that has large groups of people working together. Or demanding that everybody go with their ideas even though far more experienced people in the group are trying to explain how that won't work. The inability to function as part of a group and a desire to be in charge without the skill needed to keep a team together or complete simple milestones without manufacturing drama would be useful. All the whistleblowers state that these companies are filled with those kinds of people. The skyrocketing costs of development means that they can't maintain this type of environment for much longer, they need to strip down to just the people who can program the best. The game development cycle seems to be longer than the lifespan of game consoles nowadays.

@@stevew8513 Not defending anything specific in this case, but if everybody is too cooperative, what can happen is that nothing gets done because everything is getting done 'by committee'. (If you've ever been a group project at high school or university you've probably seen this happen.) This is why having a good director and good team leaders is important - *their* task is to make sure everyone understands what they're doing, why, and how.
On the other hand, a director who is literally the entire project can cause its own problems as well - look at what happened with Final Fantasy 15, which got so bad that Squeenix felt the need to parachute in a director with a mandate of 'get it done by this date no matter what' (and then fired them when surprise surprise the final product turned out to be pretty shit).
You need a balance of authority with clear vision and a willingness to listen to your team leaders (who need to listen to their teams), but lately we've seen a real uptick in "I couldn't make it in Hollywood so I'm taking it out on video games", where the entire project is centered around a single lead, or a small cadre of leads, who will not listen to anything. I think this is probably the first time that a company has publicly defended that so hard, though.
