We have an even dumber situation at hand: Ubisoft seem to ignore a "bug" ( could be intentional extortion) in their avatar game, which logs you out of your savegame and demands that you buy the dlc to play further even tho those people only have done about 30% of the whole game.
How do these developers not have a "keep your mouth shut" policy for staff on social media? If they tank a game from their tantrums, then you should be held accountable. Possibly financially too if legal.

Matt doesnt seem to realize his posts affect the livelihoods of his fellow coworkers. The game looks great but I'm not gonna touch it after seeing the type of person that had their hands on it. It's not even a matter of principle, it just feels kinda gross to even think of playing it now.

Matt isn't alone in his discriminatory hiring practices: that mindset and ideology is instilled in developers from the jump at conferences like the GDC, and it seems ingrained in game dev culture. I know developers who have had to quit the industry due to the overwhelming politicization of everything, and less and less is there a place for devs and artists who are "normal."
Imagine working in this game , programming it , putting your effort and love to the game so it can succeed… just to have your boss sprinkle some shit sprinkles on top of your red velvet cake. And now possibly affecting your future employment opportunities due to the project being involved in a bad business decision.
I've said it before, back in high school I wanted to do animation/games and did a brief look at the industry and where it was going and backed down super hard, and that was in 2012. I don't think anyone left disagrees with any of it, which is why it goes unchecked.

There was a podcast from Smash JT a few hours ago that revealed the whole situation at Obsidian and what happened when Microsoft bought them. A guy who was at Obsidian and worked with that guy just revealed all what happened and it was quite baffling.
I found Sean's channel due to the wave of Concord's characters redisigns. And his was the ones who actually stood out to me, while everyone were over exagerating things, Sean's dessigns did look practical for a game while also keeping the core of the character intact. I remeber saying to myself: This guy will go places.
Two thoughts: First, I loved the Pillars of Eternity games, which are set in the same original world that Avowed is. If I had known this game was coming before this whole kerfuffle kicked off, I would've been excited for it. I would have been the target audience for this game. But I'm tired of game makers acting like this, and I will not give money to people who hate me. Second, when this game fails, and when Obsidian has its inevitable round of layoffs, I hope this Matt Hanson guy will be there to personally explain to all the people who lose their jobs why it was more important for him to go "own the chuds" online than to shut up for just a couple more months for the sake of giving his game the best chance it could have to succeed.
The people at Obsidian should have taken notice at what Microsoft did to Tango Gameworks when HiFi Rush underperformed. And that was a universally acclaimed game. If Avowed doesn't bring in a ton of cash, Obsidian will be slashed. Xbox still needs to recoup the cost of Activision and they are looking everywhere to cut costs.

I loved POE too, the game was a passionate project from Josh Sawyer and team. Now that Sawyer has nothing to with Avowed and moved on, I no longer care... Which is shame.. Because I love the dark tone and lore of it. I loved most of the former companions in PoE 1 and 2 especially Aloth. 😢

Especially when they have made it quite evident on social that they will be incorporating it in game...plenty of other games to play like path of exile 2 or kingdom come deliverance 2 that look promising that are coming up; then there is also my backlog I can fall back to that has collected over the years through various sales. They really seem to think we need them, when it is the opposite. If not buying these types of games helps to humble and set them back on track then that is what I'll do. The industry is over saturated with bloat anyways with people that have flocked here with dollar signs in their eyes, and its time to trim the fat. Those who are passionate for the right reasons will always rise above the filth. Those with oversized egos unwilling to bring customers what they actually want to see will fall by the way side, simple as that.

Creators should either limit their use of it to strictly professional uses or (if they can't control their emotions) delete their accounts and uninstall the apps. I've been thinking about this too with Ubisoft. The failures they've had this year is starting to feel like inside jobs. Like someone is sabotaging the company from within. But... it could just a the mental health crisis. Insane people have been hired just because they said they belonged into a minority of any kind. These personal issues were ignored in order to mee a quota and now so many studios have mentally ill people working in them.

Might be an odd thing to say but I personally don't care that developers hate the audience because anyone who has worked a retail job dislikes the customer - we just matured and learned to keep that to ourselves, the more concerning thing to me is the complete lack of professionalism and emotional maturity on display from these 30+year olds. It shows they aren't able to separate their personal biases from their work or at the very least lack the self-awareness needed to put their message in their work and weave it in naturally. Also shows a complete lack of empathy for everyone else at the studio, if ma'am's outburst results in low sales and eventual lay-offs it won't be ma'am's job at risk due to being in a position higher up the food chain though I doubt ma'am actually cares about anyone besides themselves.

Not sure if it isn't too late. They should have done it immediately. Delaying it just makes Obsidian losing the credibility. If they do it later, they'll do it because of the backlash not because of what that ma'am did. Meaning, they're on ma'am's side. They should have fired him immediately. Emulators and retroachievments are a godsend. Already got every game i want to play downloaded too a 2 TB harddrive for when AAA developers inevitably get salty that no one is buying their crap anymore because they are all playing retro games instead and they decide to really start going for sites that host retro games.

I was honestly looking forward to this game, but having seen this guy's behaviour I decided to buy a more expensive supporter pack for Path of Exile 2 instead of buying Avowed.
There needs to be a clause in their contracts at this point that if they go on social media and talk this kind of shit and it affects the overall image of the product; they're liable for damages. like fuck publishers since they're often arseholes, but imagine spending 2-10 years of your life working on a massive project only to have some head of the team spout his nonsense on social media, then everything is just about what he said, and your project's sales are affected by it.
I wonder if Matt fully realizes yet that his lack of self control on social media just opened his company up to a potential class action lawsuit from any non-black person who tried and failed to get a job at Obsidian during his tenure as lead Art Director? It's highly unlikely that a court would rule directly against Obsidian, as the requirements to prove hiring malpractice are understandably high, but it would at a minimum force Obsidian to expend capital and time embroiled in said lawsuit, and in a worst case scenario they would have to settle out of court with those rejected employees for substantial sums of money. On top of that, while a settlement is legally not an admission of guilt, as anyone could easily find out from searching, in the general population a settlement is often considered to be equivalent to an admission of guilt that protects the guilty party from more direct legal punishment. This would represent a non-insignificant blow against Obsidian's reputation and it would probably hinder them in future collaborations, business dealings, and the hiring of new talent far into the future. Matt isn't alone in his discriminatory hiring practices: that mindset and ideology is instilled in developers from the jump at conferences like the GDC, and it seems ingrained in game dev culture. I know developers who have had to quit the industry due to the overwhelming politicization of everything, and less and less is there a place for devs and artists who are "normal."

It truly seems so unreal to me. It makes me wonder if he was drunk, high or just unwell when he wrote these things? The shareholders must be pulling their hair out? Especially since Skillup and other reviewers have been putting out such a positive word about Avowed, after a play session! I was thinking of buying it to scratch the itch that Veilguard so clearly wasn’t interested in scratching for me, namely, a good story with interesting characters and freedom of choice to be a good or bad person in their world.

There was a podcast from Smash JT a few hours ago that revealed the whole situation at Obsidian and what happened when Microsoft bought them. A guy who was at Obsidian and worked with that guy just revealed all what happened and it was quite baffling.

I found Sean's channel due to the wave of Concord's characters redisigns.
And his was the ones who actually stood out to me, while everyone were over exagerating things, Sean's dessigns did look practical for a game while also keeping the core of the character intact.
I remeber saying to myself: This guy will go places.
Two thoughts:
First, I loved the Pillars of Eternity games, which are set in the same original world that Avowed is. If I had known this game was coming before this whole kerfuffle kicked off, I would've been excited for it. I would have been the target audience for this game. But I'm tired of game makers acting like this, and I will not give money to people who hate me.
Second, when this game fails, and when Obsidian has its inevitable round of layoffs, I hope this Matt Hanson guy will be there to personally explain to all the people who lose their jobs why it was more important for him to go "own the chuds" online than to shut up for just a couple more months for the sake of giving his game the best chance it could have to succeed.
The people at Obsidian should have taken notice at what Microsoft did to Tango Gameworks when HiFi Rush underperformed. And that was a universally acclaimed game. If Avowed doesn't bring in a ton of cash, Obsidian will be slashed. Xbox still needs to recoup the cost of Activision and they are looking everywhere to cut costs.

I loved POE too, the game was a passionate project from Josh Sawyer and team. Now that Sawyer has nothing to with Avowed and moved on, I no longer care... Which is shame.. Because I love the dark tone and lore of it. I loved most of the former companions in PoE 1 and 2 especially Aloth. 😢

Especially when they have made it quite evident on social that they will be incorporating it in game...plenty of other games to play like path of exile 2 or kingdom come deliverance 2 that look promising that are coming up; then there is also my backlog I can fall back to that has collected over the years through various sales. They really seem to think we need them, when it is the opposite. If not buying these types of games helps to humble and set them back on track then that is what I'll do. The industry is over saturated with bloat anyways with people that have flocked here with dollar signs in their eyes, and its time to trim the fat. Those who are passionate for the right reasons will always rise above the filth. Those with oversized egos unwilling to bring customers what they actually want to see will fall by the way side, simple as that.

Might be an odd thing to say but I personally don't care that developers hate the audience because anyone who has worked a retail job dislikes the customer - we just matured and learned to keep that to ourselves, the more concerning thing to me is the complete lack of professionalism and emotional maturity on display from these 30+year olds. It shows they aren't able to separate their personal biases from their work or at the very least lack the self-awareness needed to put their message in their work and weave it in naturally.
Also shows a complete lack of empathy for everyone else at the studio, if ma'am's outburst results in low sales and eventual lay-offs it won't be ma'am's job at risk due to being in a position higher up the food chain though I doubt ma'am actually cares about anyone besides themselves.

Not sure if it isn't too late. They should have done it immediately. Delaying it just makes Obsidian losing the credibility. If they do it later, they'll do it because of the backlash not because of what that ma'am did. Meaning, they're on ma'am's side.

The problem with this corporate inclusivety movement is that it's doing the opposite, its excluding people of a certain demographic, just like before, its like nothing changed.

On another note, it really means alot for you to cover the topic of racism in the manner you have. I am 1/4 of each Native American, black, white, and Mexican. The last four years of encouraged racism has led to the vast majority of my family cutting me off, due to that fact I have paler skin than expected for only being 1/4. It is exceptionally painful to face such a thing in general, but having it come from family you still care deeply about is spirit crushing.

If they disagree and still choose to work under them then they have no conviction or integrity. This industry needs to learn fast that most of its prospective audience have huge backlogs, literally generations of quality gaming that is easier than ever to access. Go ahead. Keep it up. Eventually people will just stop buying anything new and decide “I don’t like anything new, I’ll just work on my backlog instead”.
Emulators and retroachievments are a godsend. Already got every game i want to play downloaded too a 2 TB harddrive for when AAA developers inevitably get salty that no one is buying their crap anymore because they are all playing retro games instead and they decide to really start going for sites that host retro games.

I wonder if Matt fully realizes yet that his lack of self control on social media just opened his company up to a potential class action lawsuit from any non-black person who tried and failed to get a job at Obsidian during his tenure as lead Art Director?
It's highly unlikely that a court would rule directly against Obsidian, as the requirements to prove hiring malpractice are understandably high, but it would at a minimum force Obsidian to expend capital and time embroiled in said lawsuit, and in a worst case scenario they would have to settle out of court with those rejected employees for substantial sums of money. On top of that, while a settlement is legally not an admission of guilt, as anyone could easily find out from searching, in the general population a settlement is often considered to be equivalent to an admission of guilt that protects the guilty party from more direct legal punishment.
This would represent a non-insignificant blow against Obsidian's reputation and it would probably hinder them in future collaborations, business dealings, and the hiring of new talent far into the future.
Not a lawyer, not legal advise, but to my laymans eye it seems like he's put Obsidian in a very hazardous position unless they fire and repudiate him.
