Zulie, I've noticed that some of these Pubs HEAVILY promote their own editors. Example: on 9/4/20 Illumination Curated had 68 stories on their home page, 65 of the stories were written by Illumination editors. Have you noticed this and doesn't that make it hard for new writers?

Thank you, this is super valuable to me as I get started on Medium. I'm curious, did you have a day job throughout this process? I certainly couldn't live off 15k a month. I know it's a personal question but it's helpful to know if someone was living with family, or supported by a partner, etc. If you had a day job, how the heck did you manage to churn out so much content?! Kudos.
Haha i did have a day job. i managed because i poured every free minute into Medium. I also wasn't supporting kids or anything like that. It's not possible for everyone!
Zulie, I was wondering if you'd creat a video giving your opinion on the Pyramid Scheme of Medium, so to speak. There seems to be so much content on how to become a good writer and how to male money from it. This generates new writers who will write about the same thing, recruiting newbies to the same, and so on. It just keeps going.

You're right - Medium only curates English stories, but on Medium, your money comes from reads, not curation. As long as you can access an active community in the language you're writing in, you'll find readers and hence money. For example, one of the best Spanish publications is medium.com/voces-en-espa%C3%B1ol

Hey Iqra! Great question. When someone is a Medium member, and they read a locked story, part of their membership fee goes to the author of that story. Members can read unlimited stories; nonmembers get 2-3 per month. If the author chooses not to lock it, then it's open for everyone, and it does not earn money.
Hey Zulie quick question. What's your opinion of Medium allowing writers to categorize their pieces same way as Pubs do? I've seen pubs who at the top of their page, organize their works into fiction, poetry, short story, etc. Shouldn't writers be allowed to do that on their page as well?
Yep and I actually gave this feedback to Medium when I had the chance to speak with them. The only workaround right now is to create your own pub and do the same,

I have a question: If you publish your story and it gets 0 views, can you unpublish it, save it as a draft, then submit it to a publication? Is that cheating? Thank you for this video!
You can't actually unpublish stories, you can only unlist (still published, but not surfaceable by searches on Medium or search engines) or delete. You ~could~ delete and republish to a pub it so long as there is sufficient editing to make it not a replica.
I use both my medium publication and an external newsletter. Luckily you don't have to do both. I'd recommend starting with the Medium pub as it's free and simple to use, especially if your main goal is driving traffic back to your stories.

This is hard to answer because a lot of writers do things differently. Some newsletters I'm on use it exclusively to promote their products (which actually normally makes me unsubscribe). Then there are those that typically promote one story/week that they really like/think is important. Some share tips, anecdotes, links, and even links from other stories, too.

Hi Zulie, thanks for the advice. I have a question, I am a little confused about why a writer would write under their own name and not instead add it to their Publication, if they have one. For example, I see on Medium you have Zulie Rane and the Zulie writes Pub - i see your articles are divided between the 2 (not including 3rd Party pubs.) If your Pub allows you to build a news letter etc. I am wondering what the advantage is still keeping some articles under your own name? (hope you can shed some light and that that makes sense:))
Honestly, the only two reasons I keep stories outside of my own pub are if a) I'm hoping someone will ask me to include it in theirs (e.g., I once published something not in a pub, and OneZero emailed me the next day to ask to include it in theirs) OR b) if I forget. Mostly the latter. There's no advantage. Hope this helps!

I know there's a pretty lively Spanish speaking community - check out medium.com/vestigium as an example. Stories not written in English are not curated *for now* but this is subject to change at any time.
I was so looking forward to making money by writing articles on Medium but then I discovered South Africa is not a supported country. :( Can never seem to catch a break.
Sorry about that Brick100 :( You're right - at the moment, there is no way to be paid directly by Medium or Stripe if your country is not allowed. However, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from writing on Medium right now. You can totally sign up, start writing, build a portfolio and start getting followers now. You won't be paid by Medium directly YET, and I know that sucks and is unfair and I really hope Medium/Stripe change their policy soon, but a) there are other ways to earn money, like driving people to your own blog, using affiliate links and so on and b) eventually, I hope, Medium/Stripe will monetize for additional countries. If that's the case, you'll be established when that happens. Hope that makes sense and sorry I can't help more. I am always trying to find a workaround as it affects a lot of people, and I really believe that everyone deserves to be compensated for their writing, but as of yet, I have not found any good workarounds.
That's a tough question! In the end, it depends on the story and your personal preference. If this is the story you've wanted to share with the world for as long as you can remember, then it can be worth waiting until you have a solid audience. But this should never hold you back from starting to publish in the first place. Also, remember that you can tell stories from many different angles. I hope that helps!

Hi Zulie! I set up both my publication and newsletter today! I want to start with having my friends and family sign up for both. How do I direct them to do that? Still trying to learn logistics
Nice! Ok, they need to start by at least having a medium account. Then they can "follow" the pub by going to its url. To get them to subscribe to its newsletter, follow these steps: 1. go to your pub 2. go to newsletter 3. click on more options and select settings 4. scroll down until you see the "promotion" option 5. tick the box that says "Promote your newsletter on your publication’s stories." 6. then direct them to any story published in your pub. there should be a box at the bottom that lets them sign up to the newsletter.
Hey writers, what do you do when you have so much to write but you are not able to write anything? I am in a wiered space. I have content but whwn I get infront of a screen to type it out, my hands don't cooperate.
I think Medium is the easiest way to get started writing online because you don't need to set up anything. You can just start writing. But, of course, if Wordpress is the easier option for you I say go for it!

When you publish on Medium, the story gets put in a curation queue to be reviewed by Medium's curators. They check it out, make sure it adheres to the guidelines, and either curate or don't.
Just decide what your call to action should be (reading more of your content, going to your website, signing up for a newsletter) and write it at the bottom of your post!

So Medium recently (?) got rid of curation jail, from what I can tell, so this means you should have a lot more leeway to keep trying and improving!

It's allowed, but a little bit frowned upon among pubs. However illumination has so many stories and writers that it's probably fine.

Yes, absolutely! Stories do not have to be in English to earn money. As long as a member is reading the stories, they'll earn money :)

Yes if it's old. Some pubs accept work that's been previously published; some only take fresh drafts.

I was so looking forward to making money by writing articles on Medium but then I discovered South Africa is not a supported country. :( Can never seem to catch a break.

You're right - at the moment, there is no way to be paid directly by Medium or Stripe if your country is not allowed. However, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from writing on Medium right now. You can totally sign up, start writing, build a portfolio and start getting followers now.
You won't be paid by Medium directly YET, and I know that sucks and is unfair and I really hope Medium/Stripe change their policy soon, but a) there are other ways to earn money, like driving people to your own blog, using affiliate links and so on and b) eventually, I hope, Medium/Stripe will monetize for additional countries. If that's the case, you'll be established when that happens.
Hope that makes sense and sorry I can't help more. I am always trying to find a workaround as it affects a lot of people, and I really believe that everyone deserves to be compensated for their writing, but as of yet, I have not found any good workarounds.
You are saying that you published a story into entrepreneur's handbook and then removed it from there and reuploaded it to PGSG?
No, two similar stories both on the subject of freelance money - PGSG's audience preferred that to EH's! Hope that makes sense.

Should you put out your best work when you start or hold them back until you are a little more well known?
That's a tough question! In the end, it depends on the story and your personal preference. If this is the story you've wanted to share with the world for as long as you can remember, then it can be worth waiting until you have a solid audience. But this should never hold you back from starting to publish in the first place. Also, remember that you can tell stories from many different angles.

Hi Zulie! I set up both my publication and newsletter today! I want to start with having my friends and family sign up for both. How do I direct them to do that? Still trying to learn logistics
Nice! Ok, they need to start by at least having a medium account. Then they can "follow" the pub by going to its url.
To get them to subscribe to its newsletter, follow these steps:
1. go to your pub
2. go to newsletter
3. click on more options and select settings
4. scroll down until you see the "promotion" option
5. tick the box that says "Promote your newsletter on your publication’s stories."
6. then direct them to any story published in your pub. there should be a box at the bottom that lets them sign up to the newsletter.

I think Medium is the easiest way to get started writing online because you don't need to set up anything. You can just start writing. But, of course, if Wordpress is the easier option for you I say go for it!

How do you get something curated?
When you publish on Medium, the story gets put in a curation queue to be reviewed by Medium's curators. They check it out, make sure it adheres to the guidelines, and either curate or don't.
