    Your technique is absolutely PERFECT! Too many people are just throwing the ingredients together and think it's just gonna create itself, not realizing there is a bit of a science on how to blend the different types of oils so they'll bind together and not separate. Allowing it to cool too slowly will result in a gritty mess - not layering the oils in at different stages of cooling will result in separation and destruction of the beneficial properties of the more delicate EO's - bringing any of your oils to a boil over direct heat or in the microwave or even heating too much beyond their melting point will also destroy any beneficial properties. I used this technique with anti-inflammatory EO's and no more knee pain - I also made a cooling butter with a bit of arrowroot for my mom's head (she's battling cancer and bald as the day she was born) she LOVES the silky smooth cooling feeling. Next on my list -- stretch mark and loose skin butter!! You're amazing, thank you!!

      Hi Randi,
      Thank you for watching and commenting! I really really appreciate this comment so much :D
      Sounds like you make some awesome DIY's yourself, I am sure your mother really appreciates your mix. My prayers go out to you and your family, sending positive energy and strength to your mother.
      I have seen some whipped butter recipes without melting down the butters at all (mainly Shea butter/mango butter). I live in really really warm climates so by the time I get my raw butters in the post it has soften and solidified again a few times so I always end up double broiling to get rid of any grittiness. I find melting and whipping a few times really helps to give the butter super fluffiness which is something I personally like.
      Once again thank you so much for watching and commenting! :)

      Marie Nazzareno thank you! I do make some videos where if I feel like a certain ingredient/mix needs a little intro/explanation then I do that, otherwise I try my best to keep it simple. Hi Mai! Thanks for this vid!! I just purchased some shea butter and was looking for a simple whipped shea butter recipe. It has also gotten VERY cold over the last few days, so the timing is perfect as I prefer using shea during this time of the year. It's great for the entire body too!

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Necey! :)
      I saw the picture of your Shea butter, you got a great deal there! Yeah Shea is fantastic for both hair and body. This one has a few other butters in there because that Cocoa butter smell...was just too good to pass up lol plus is helped to keep my mix a little firm in the summer (when I made the video). There are tons of great simple Shea Butter recipes on YT I am sure you will find one your skin and hair likes :D

      How much castor oil did you use?

  • @Maicurls
    @Maicurls  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    @Jessie Hughes (sorry for whatever reason I can't reply directly to your comment) Thanks for commenting and sharing :) I honestly only use it on my body and hair not necessarily my face. For some this might be a little heavy, especially if you have sensitive skin that is prone to breakouts because it is really rich. If you do decide to apply it on your face I would suggest using it before bed, that way you won't look "glowy" (oily). I also use coconut oil on my skin but this has been amazing for my body. I love it on my hair after using something moisturizing like a leave-in conditioner. It is also great for dry hair or damaged hair, a little goes a LOOONG way so you only need a little bit at a time especially since it looks like you have straight hair. Too much will probably weigh down your hair and make it look limp. Sorry for the essay LOL just wanted to cover all aspects :)

      Kulal S it depends on the self life of your ingredients. If your oils and butters have a 1 year shelf life then so too will your whipped butter. As long as you have sanitized everything and don’t introduce water etc to the mix.

    Hello, great video. Is there a reason why you add the carries in stages?
    Thank you.

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I mainly do it in stages because when the butter is put in the fridge it can become really hard so if I added all the oils in one go I wouldn't have a slightly warmer liquid (the oils which aren't in the fridge) to help soften the butter after it's taken out of the fridge. You could of course just whip the mix one and add all the oils but I like mixing a few times because it helps to lighten/fluff the cream (in my opinion).

      @TanyaScorpio 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maicurls thanks for responding. Yes I did use your method. I've made about 3 batches so far. If you haven't check out rainforest chica she has exotic butters. I just got my shipment and will be turning my hair grease to another level.

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a cream do you mean a "lotion"? If so it could but there are other ingredients needed for that in order to combine the oil/butter with water and to make sure that it doesn't go moldy it would need other ingredients that I don't/haven't used.

If so, I got them from www.sheabuttercottage.com part of the Shea Butter I used was from the same online store but I ran out so I used my supply that my mother brought from Africa. If you need a US based source my suggestion is to check out www.butters-n-bars.com/ A lot of my US friends swear by them.
      If you mean the actual containers I use, I do not live in the States so I don't have a "shop" I can list but I normally buy my containers from regular grocery stores where they stack different types of Tupperware, containers etc. The other place I like to hunt is basically a kitch shop something similar to a dollar store. They have all kinds of containers and other "kitch" items lol. So cheap and they can be made to look prettier for example I added the red ribbon to mine to make it look a little more fancy ;). Hope that helps.

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi!
      Well it really depends on what you hair likes, your hair density and the thickness of your hair strands. Personally yes, I like using it as the C towards the ends of my hair all the way down as part of the LOC method. But some people see whipped butter as a "thicker sealing oil" so use it as part of the O. I have fine hair so I use a light oil for the length of my hair to seal and then the whipped butter towards the ends. I then use my styling product which if anything is Flax Seed Gel. But like I said it really depends on your hair preference and structure.

      Kris P you can play around with the ratios. If you use more harder butter (eg cocoa) a little less of the softer ones and same amount of oils. Basically the more butter you use the harder it will be but you still want to use oils so it isn’t completely solid and easy to scoop out the container. Hope that helps

    I really enjoyed the video and gave it a shot today. I used African shea butter instead of regular shea (not sure if difference) and olive oil instead of grape seed oil. Mine turned out ptettt greasy and it melts as soon as I touch it. It seemed to take a lot longer in the fridge and while mixing. What can I do to make it less greasy and hold its texture better? I still love it and plan to use all of it on my pregnant belly!!! Thank you for sharing the recipe!!

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delayed reply. People use arrowroot powder to cut down on the greasiness feel. Corn starch powder would be an alternative. Olive oil can be a bit greasy so that might be it but it really depends on personal preference. Also a little realllly goes a lonnnng way try using a lot less at a time. Using more of the harder butter (cocoa) and a little less of the softer butter can help prevent it from melting while out, but keep in mind too much of the harder butter can also make the mix too hard (for your preference). It is always a balancing act.

      Lynelle Thompson i personally have never experimented with arrow root or corn starch but i know there are a few recipes only. Not just off “gut instinct” or if I were experimenting I wouldn’t add more than 1 teaspoon maybe 1.5 teaspoons max and I would add it to the melted butters (off the heat) before placing it in the fridge. You don’t want to have a white powdery residue once the butters get absorbed lol. Then you can tweak the recipe depending on how your skins feels and looks after adding just a tiny bit first. Thank you. In the video I add the oils like that because when you first start making it you want to make sure you’re not adding in too much. People will always tweak the recipe so I suggest adding the oils in stages this way you don’t dump too much oil in one go while still experimenting because once it in there it’s there. So until you get comfortable with the oil amount after practice I suggest going a little at a time between whipping. I normally don’t have to because I’ve made it so much but on occasion I will add in stages too.

      Ifeyinwa Jenny if you leave some water on your skin after a shower, using a spoon scrape out a tiny bit, work into your palms then the skin and wait for a few minutes for it to absorb into your skin; it won’t leave your skin greasy. A little goes a LONG way so you literally only need a tiny amount.

    Hi Mai ! This butter is totally amazinggg, Thank You so much!! I never knew this technique of adding in the carrier oils at 2 different intervals and also I had been whipping my butters only once rather than thrice like you do! Could you please explain why you add the carriers at different intervals, how does this benefit ?

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Eshwari Kishor thank you for watching and commenting! So one of the main reasons I add the oils in stages is because if you are following my recipe and measurements it gives you a chance to reduce the amount of oil (if you wish) because it’s basically impossible to get the oil out once it’s been added to the butters. So this way when you are “new” to it, you get a chance to control the amounts you use (till you find the right measurements you like). For some this might be too much or too little oil but adding more oil is easier than dumping in too much at once and regretting it. I also add in stages because I whip it in stages. This makes it easier to get the cream to be light and airy when I not only whip it 3 times but I’m adding oils at different points too. I’ve found the more you whip it, the “lighter” it gets, the more oil you use or less harder butters the “lighter” the cream. Hope that helps and once again thank you! 🙏🏽

      @Maicurls  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Avalon Lewis :) Thanks for the lovely compliment! The butters usually have about a 1 year shelf life on their own and if you are not adding in anything like water, aloe vera etc then the whip shouldn't go bad before that. Things like Vitamin E, Essential oils such as Grapefruit and Tea tree are antioxidants known to help extend shelf lives of products not necessarily "preserve" a product. There are of preservatives you can add, I honestly have never used any but if you look for natural preservatives for products online I am sure you will find a few e.g optiphen.
      When I use my whip I try to avoid putting wet hands in the jar or hands covered with another product. If I am working with wet hair I will (usually) use a spoon to scoop a little out and take the whip from there. So far none of my mixes have gone off before I have used it up. Also storing the whip in an airtight container will help and storing it in a cool and dark place is a good idea too. (sorry for the essay reply! lol)

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a tiny tiny amount (no bigger than the size of my nail) on my face. But it will depend on person to person, for some it might be too much so you'll have to figure out if your face can take the oils and butters. For me it does wonders. I store mine in my cupboard. There is nothing in them that would cause mold/bacteria growth since it's just oils and butters but I also make sure that I use clean and dry fingers when I scope some out. If you want to me extra (like me) you can use a little wooden spoon/spatula (something like they use for soft ice cream in a cup) that way you know you aren't putting any contamination in the jar since there are no real chemical preservatives in this mix. You could store in your fridge if you worry about the butter melting too much but know that in the fridge it will make the mix super hard so it will be a little harder to get the butter out the container but it will melt as soon as you rub it between your palms within seconds.

Grape Seed Oil is just another carrier oil, it can be replaced with any other carrier oil you like/have at home (any one will work e.g jojoba, olive oil, almond more, virgin coconut oil etc). You could add a little corn strarch (I personally haven't) but I suggest taking a small amount of the carrier oil you will be using on the side in a separate bowl, sprinkle the cornstarch a little at a time and stir till it is combined and lump free, then add it to the melted butter and other carrier oils. I recommend doing this before you have placed it in the fridge & whip it, this way you will make sure it has been well distributed. Hope that helps, and hope you love it! :D

    Hi what is the purpose of the glycerin? Whats the difference in putting it in and leaving it out?

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sid N Hi. Glycerine is a humectant which is an ingredient that draws moisture in the air to the hair or skin. It is a hit and miss ingredient for some because depending on the amount of moisture in the air (the humidity) it can work or not depending on where you live which is why I suggest it as an optional ingredient. Not everyone's hair responds well to glycerine because for some it can cause frizz (again depending on humidity). Check the ingredients on your favourite products to see if they contain glycerine or not. If they do then you can try adding a little perhaps just 1/2 a teaspoon for the first attempt. If none of your favourites contain glycerine then you can just skip it all together. Thanks for watching and commenting :D

      +MAI Ya Thank you so much for watching and commenting. No you do not have to add the oils in two separate steps however, when some first initially make the butter (their first attempt) people are not sure of how much/little oil they really need or want in it. My measurements do not have to be followed to the letter, this way you have more control because once the oil has been added there is no way to remove it. Thank you for responding. I've made my second batch of whipped shea butter and I'm impressed but I'm trying to aim for a creamier look like yours. It may sound crazy but I'm using a handheld blender right now, but wonder if that has to do with the final product or an ingredient gives it that fluffiness? I think you mentioned you whip for 10 minutes which I know that's my issue, because the handheld tends to loose control on speed 1. I'm opened to any suggestions. :)

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michelle Allen The thanks goes to you :). I think a few things can sort of affect the fluffiness. I do live in really warm climates so my butters tend to not be as "solid" as those that live in cooler climates. So house temperature does play a role. I do think the longer you whip the fluffier it becomes. I also think that the blades of the blender warm up the butter (which is not necessarily a bad thing) but that makes the butter more runny than fluffy and a whisk doesn't heat up. Also what other oils and butters do you add? I find Virgin coconut can make a difference too due to its melting/solidification temperatures. Coconut and any other oil should be fine. Perhaps try using light oils (if you haven't already) e.g. almond or grapeseed. I think you might just need to experiment a little (i know it can be annoying lol). Write down each time you make a batch the exact amounts you use so when you find your favorite combo you have it noted down.

      Hi Upfulsistren,
      Thank you and thank you for watching and commenting. You can use more Essential Oil but please keep in mind that EO's are really really strong, too much of it can irritate the skin/scalp. You want to add the EO when the butters are no longer warm (when they are not melted) so they don't destroy the integrity of the oils, so you can just add them at the end before you do the final whip. Hope that helps :D

    I made some but it was hard to spread on my body. It was a bit sticky and greasy. How can I make it more fluffy and less greasy?

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure if you followed my exact recipe or if you used different amounts of ingredients because when I make this butter (I have been making this for myself and others for years now) it has never felt sticky. You want to apply the butter on skin that is slightly damp (ever so slightly as if you lightly towel dried your skin so it isn't sopping wet but also not fully dry) so that it traps in moisture. And you literally only need the size of your nail/ finger tip dipped in it. Less is more with this. As I mentioned in my video, depending on your climate the butter can feel harder/softer because temperature plays a role on the consistency of the whipped butter. So if it feels hard, use less hard butter compared to the oil (eg less cocoa a little less shea and keep the mango). Again, for me, the butter has never felt oily but I have seen that some people say they use arrowroot powder. I can not personally attest to it since I've never had to try that but it is said to help make it a little more "cream like" in nature, again I can't say if it does or doesn't since I have never tried. I hope this helps.

      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi wendy arevalo Thank you :). In all honesty I have never used either of them but from my understanding zinc oxide absorbs ultraviolet light and has mild astringent properties right? Steric acid can be used as an emulsifier and helps thicken products right? Like I said I have never used them before so I probably am not the best person to ask but they should be fine to add (don't quote me on that ;) ). Since steric acid thickens I am not sure how that would work out during the winter months when the butter becomes a little firmer on its own due to the change in temperature but I guess a little experimenting won't hurt. You can just as a little to a small batch and see how it feels versus adding it to the whole recipe. Would love to hear how it turns out.

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The shelf life, will depend on the individual ingredients you have but in general it is good for 6 months - 1 year. Essential oils do not "avoid the expiration" but it helps to preserve the butters and can help extend the shelf life BUT if you are dipping wet/dirty fingers in the container you can contaminate it so always use clean dry hands if you are using your fingers to scoop out some butter. I store mine in my cupboard (no direct sunlight) but you could technically also store it in the fridge but that will make the butter hard because they are oils and butters so it solidifies when cold. The cold doesn't affect the quality of the butter in face that can help extend the shelf life but again, it will make the whip hard versus a creamy/soft.

      @@marinabodrick9665 aw you are very welcome. I personally haven’t tried using honey. I honestly am not that keen on leaving honey on my hair or skin just because I have this weird relationship with the thought of it potentially attracting insects (bees) to me 😂. Bees somehow are naturally attracted to my scent soooo I don’t need to attract them, lol. I have one spray recipe on my channel that did include leaving a teeny tiny amount of honey on the hair (it has a lot of benefits for the hair and skin) but I just prefer not having it in my own personal mixes. Honey is a natural astringent so I would think that it shouldn’t make the butter go off quicker but like I said I have never tried personally so that’s just a guess based on my understanding and what I’ve read. If you do, I’d love to hear what you think.

    Great video! I need to make some of this for myself and my family. I do have a question though. Would this be ok to use on my neice's hair? She's biracial and less than a year and a half old so I don't really want to use a bunch of chemicals on her hair. I am trying to learn how to do her hair correctly

      +Katie W. Thank you for watching and commenting. While there is nothing "dangerous" used in this whip, I know that infants can have really sensitive skin and if the butter is applied on her hair chances are some will of course touch her scalp, so I would suggest making separate batch for her without the use of Essential Oil (EO). You can make the EO the last step and take out some of the whipped butter in a separate container for her and then add the EO to the rest (if you plan on using any). Again EO is not "dangerous" per say but some oils are a little more potent that others & might cause her skin/scalp irritations as she is young. Also you will only need a tiny tiny bit of the butter for her hair, too much might make it and her scalp oily/greasy. I hope you and your family love the butter! :D Thanks again.

    Can I replace the shea butter and cocoa butter with another hard butter, such as kokum butter or extra mango butter? Not a big fan of shea butter's smell

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Megan. I have not tried kokum butter but since it is a hard butter with a high melting point it should work. I would suggest using some kind of soft butter along with it, just in case the kokum alone is too hard. You can combine it with mango butter or perhaps also using coconut oil, just so your whip doesn't remain too firm (unless you want the whip to be firm). I would love to hear your results! :) Thanks for watching, sharing and commenting! :D

    I cannot wait to try this. I love pure coco butter. I put it in my baby and just want to eat her up. I have a question about the mango butter. Do you find that it's Extra extra grainy? I used it once and had to whip the heck out of it just to get the grains out. Thanks for sharing your recipe. So if I was just making this for my body (I have Locs) I would just leave out the glycerin? Or does that have some effect on the skin as well??

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      melencolley Thank you for watching and commenting :). I am a huge fan of cocoa butter too, I have a hard time pulling my face away from the container it smells so so so good! Glycerin is actually a moisturizing ingredient for the skin as well as the hair and it works in the same way on the skin as it does on the hair. It would draw in moisture (humidity) from the air to the area applied of course only if you happen to live in an area with humidity. Glycerin is not a necessary/essential ingredient so if you do not want to use it that is completely up to you. Not everyone's skin/hair likes it (mainly depends on how much humidity/if any is in the air) so it can be skipped altogether. I would love to know what you think if you try the mix :)

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      melencolley Forgot about the mango butter! Mine wasn't really grainy but I think if you melt it down and then whip from versus whipping it while it is "solid" it will get rid of the graininess. That tends to happen due to changes in temperature usually when it is being transported so it might have melted on its way to you and then when it arrived it could have cooled down and solidified again. The change in temperature can cause the graininess but it is nothing to worry about. I have had that issue with Shea Butter but double broiling always gets rid of that for me :) Hope it helps! :D

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +tamaragrimmett,
      Thanks for watching and commenting. No it does not have to be refrigerated. The shelf life of the mix will depend on the shelf life of your raw ingredients. Ois and butters usually have a shelf life of 1 - 3 years and since there is no water/water based ingredients used it should stay fresh till you use it up. Just make sure the equipment and containers are clean and completely void of water, not a drop of water otherwise you will get bacteria growth eventually. Hope that helps :)

    Your video is very informative!! I have a question. Does your mixture harden over time? Some recipes that I have tried in the past are only creamy for the first couple of hours and then turn into hard blocks. How do you keep it creamy? Thanx!!

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi KSKS II thank you for watching and commenting :). You generally want to use more soft butters versus hard butters and also use at least one oil (if not more), that will help keep the butter from "turning into hard blocks". You might not even need to use a hard butter like cocoa because the climate of where you lives plays a role too. If your general weather is relatively low then that will affect how hard or soft the butter remains. So Shea butter with mango or any other soft butter might be enough, along with an oil.
      I live in really hot/warm country so for 8 months of the year my butter is soft and during our "winter" the mix becomes a little firmer but not a hard block. You also want to make sure than you whip the butter for long enough. Whipping it allows the mix to incorporate oxygen which helps to make it light and fluffy. Sorry for this essay just wanted to explain as best I could :)

    • @Maicurls
      @Maicurls  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dalia Dudalski You can pretty much replace it with any carrier oil that won't bring up the allergies. Apricot Kernal Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil pretty much any oil that won't give you any problems. One thing I want to point out is that Shea Butter will probably give you issues (I am sure you already know that but I just wanted point it out). Again you can use any other butter your skin will be ok with or just increase the amount of mango butter if you (can/choose to) use it. Thank you for watching and commenting :)
