So in theory this show should take place around the time of things like the discovery of the Holtzman Effect, the founding of The Guild, the beginnings of Mentats etc.
If they go by the brain Herbert books , the should have shields, already, the first mentat school should be being established, the guild will be known as vendors industries, ( it will become the guild soon )
This is when they begin to discover how to refine Spice to serve different purposes. That could be another interesting political tool.
@@shanenolan5625 I read the two Brian Herbert sequels but not the prequels. Some of the most terrible fanfiction I've ever read.
@@Twenty-Seven I read 7 prequels and 3 sequels and I agree, if anything the writing gets worse, the more you read ,
Actually, if you read the latter books of Dune, you’ll discover that all the questions are eventually answered. But, be warned you’re going to be switching from book to book in order to get the timeline correct.
As long as it is well written and it fits within the Dune universe fans know and love them it'll do good. I liked the trailer. It looks exciting. And it does look a bit different than Dune. It could have looked more different but so far it looks good. We will have to wait and see the final product.
Yeah, the trailer seems OK, we shall see. There's one detail I appreciated; you see them using secret hand signs, similar to the ones used by Jessica in the Dune movies (Atreides batttle language). I'm interested in seeing how they convey the order's mystique and esoteric practices.
I will withhold any major criticism for now, but I do have misgivings and questions. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have already created a prequel version of Dune history through their many expanded universe novels. Also, there is the reference material in The Dune Encyclopedia that often differs to what BH and KJA have written. Is this going to be yet another version of Dune history and, if so, do we need yet another version to add to the confusion? There is no mention of the other schools except for Swordmasters. Will the development history of Mentats, Navigators and Suk doctors even be discussed, since the interplay between all is important to the expanded Dune universe?
This. The sisterhood started out on Rossack according to BH and KJH, and I liked their original story (as well as the Mentats and the Guild Navigators). I've always argued that BH and FH were not as chauvinist as they've been accused as the Bene Gesserit really pulled the strings of the Empire for a long time, but fuzzy on the timeline and this idea that they're jumping through time is silly (those dead sisters are only voices and can only really impact present and future, right? We're not going for time jumping space nuns?) 10k before Dune is like 190 AG. The Bene Gesserit weren't even formed yet, nor was the Guild. I'll give it a go, but I get tired of everyone just creating their own lore just for the adaptation. It's certainly not working for ROP.
This is probably the rare case where it's a warranted approach but I gotta say, I am so freaking tired of 'multiple timelines' media omg.
I’d prefer to see the prequel story of the Duras sisters, L’ursa and B’etor. They are magnificent, aren’t they? TNG should have given them way more screen time.
Lursa and B'etor really were great characters, they both had their own characteristics. Even though they were brought back a few times they should have been given more screen time.
Aye, they were great characters from back when Star Trek was good TV.
In this vast galaxy spanning empire, across 10,000 years or more, everyone you meet or encounter, will either be an A) Atreides, B) a Horkennen, or C) possibly a Corino (though that is kinda unlikely). The reason for this obvious, this 'feud' between two not yet 'noble' houses, is the single defining feature of this huge sprawling empire. If any other figures or groups, played a role, it was basically a minor, supporting one, at best to this feud. While this feud does come to play a role, it is not the reason for the events on Dune itself. Even if the Harkonnens and Atreides had basically good, or neutral relations, the emperor still would have approached them with his plan to destroy what he saw as a rival who could potentially eclipse and supplant house Corrino.
As far as I can remember Valya was the Harkonnen sisyer who worked her way up in the Bene Gesserit ranks, while Tula went on a journey to take revenge on the man responsible for the Harkonnen downfall, Voryan Atreides. Now, that are two storylines I would like to see
Great as always! Thanks Elaine!!!!!!!!!!
I think with the Villeneuve adaption of Dune and now this show there is too much focus on the Sisterhood. They say there is so much more to the Dune universe but all of the attention seems to be going to the Bene Gesserit.
The last two books Frank wrote (Heretics and Chapterhouse) are PURELY about the Bene Gesserit.
Just reading the title made me roll my eyes.
It's gonna SUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
Ahh, I see we have someone here who has the power of prescience!
@@70briareos it's called pattern recognition, I'm sorry you're lacking.
@@ulfsark78 - Ooooooooh, Lisan Al-Gaib!!!
All those catchphrase words the writer/ director used to describe their take between what frank write and what they've made up for show sounds exactly what they said about rings of power. So that is very worrying.
If I'm correct the series is more based on Frank's son (Brian) books than the original 6 from Frank, and I think is an original story set in the same universe in a period that the books don't talk about, I'm not against it tho, Brian's books already retcon some thinks and the movies even more so as long is consistent I'll be interested. Also the fact that is about middle-ege ladies is the only reason I'm willing to give it a change =)
There's an trilogy written by his son Brian, with Kevin j. Anderson, that details of creation of the major schools... The Bene Gesserit, the Mentat school and the development of the Guild, and I would guess they're going to draw heavily on that material. It's impossible to tell how much from the little bit of footage we've seen other than the fact that the Harkonnens were involved at the very beginning of the formation of the Bene Gesserit order
I have a deep antipathy to anything that Brian Herbert and K. J. Anderson have churned out. This, even if onlpy partly based on their work, just isn't for me. Note that I am a HUGE fan of all of Frank Herbert's work, but especially his great Dune hexalogy.
Although I have explored some of the later lore the only Frank Herbert Book I have experienced is the first one. I do have plans to do the others... okay I'll just come out and admit it, I'm listening to them Audiobook. Because I like to start at the beginning, I've listened to the Atredies Novel (Awful) and the first Butlerian Jihad novel. While Brian and Kevin don't have anywhere near the style of Frank, I actually enjoyed the Butlerian Jihad one. Dune was still much better, but I still enjoyed it.
The timeline seems off. The events of Paul Atreides Dune takes place in the year 10,192. The Spacing Guild and Bene Gesserit orders occurred after the religious jihad around 6,041. So how is this show 10,000 years before the events of Paul Atreides?
Why is it that people can’t think creatively? How come the Bene Geserit DRESS AND LOOK THE SAME EVEN 10,000 YEARS AGO?!?! Who in their right mind would believe that this 1 uniform they have WOULD REMAIN THE SAME? …I mean, I guess black is always in…
If there's Gen X working on creativity we're fine. If it's anyone younger who spent the majority of their childhood looking at a phone. You won't see any creativity, just more copy paste trash.
So, this is HoTD ... in space ... sans dragons? Got it.
Frank Herbert's books are amazing. My second favorite science fiction series behind Dan Simmons Hyperion novels. This isn't based on a novel by Frank Herbert and is just more fan fiction set in the universe he created. For all those looking forward to the series I hope it's done well, but I just can't muster any excitement about it myself. I also fear that this will be yet another vehicle to push modern political sentiment, given the subject they've chosen. But hopefully I'm wrong and this will be something well done.
Not sure if this is Entertainment Weekly's mistake or if it came from the showrunner's words to them, but the explanation of the BG as the "order that will one day manipulate Paul's rise to power from the shadows" is a pretty clear misunderstanding of the plot of both the books and the films. To miss the arc of Paul's rise coming DESPITE the plans of the BG is a huge oversight, IMO, and kind of concerning to read coming from the head creatives behind this project, if it was actually their words and not EW's misunderstanding of them.
No, the Bene Gesserit did manipulate his rise to power. It went wrong for them at the very end, but they created the blood line that produced Paul over many generations, they manipulated the great houses, and they used the Missionaria Protectiva to create the religion that actually brought Paul and Jessica to power.
@@wordsofcheresie936 They were orchestrating the rise of the Kwisatz Haderach, not Paul Atreides, which is what the blurb said.
I'm still on the fence about Prophecy. I 'm not an expert on the Dune books so I can't remember if they had begun their breeding program at this point. That would have been a good way to explore some of the other houses, not just the main houses from the Frank Herbert Era.
It would've been far more interesting if it was all about the Atreide's or Harkonnen instead of the concubines they've been banging on the side. Seeing a bunch of women forcing everyone to do what they want them to do whether they like it or not seems very boring.
Plot twist: Ragnar Lothbrook shows up and kills the reverend mother
I like those letters
Man, everything in this article made my spider-sense tinglin'. I think i'll listen to it and stay back from this.
they are going to make the "gayest dune content ever" how do you think its going to work out?
On Earth, ten thousand years ago was the end of the second ice age.
The names and plotline sound very mutch "Sisterhood of Dune" written 2012 by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson. There are now a lot of prequels - not even remotely near the level and quality of Frank Herbert, but Brian owns the IP now ...
New voice flow 🙌
Thanks Elaine
Really cautiously optimistic, I fear it will draw too much from the writers of the show and less from Herbert. I wouldnt have chosen of which make a show about and ofc we have
worry about the time when it was made, because writers have been known to push their modern ideology into shows.
I am always dubious of entertainment that starts a past-story. Because I'm afraid they eventually visit the future too many times. Look at Star Trek: Enterprise. How many aliens in OS & NG did they encounter, that'd never been seen before, only for them to show up in ST:E or ST:SNW. And Battlestar Gallactica when they did a series prior to the Cylon Attack. Or Game of Thrones... you get the idea.
As always, thank you so very much for your videos.
Oh I think the change to a more Villeneuve aesthetic has probably just saved the show. Like it or not, that look has become the mainstream-recognised visual language for Dune.
Good stuff,Nerd.
It shouldn’t look different, thats the point.Humanity has stagnated. All the advances happened around the time the sisterhood formed.
Looking forward to this 💯💯💯💯💯💯
After one war, one global plague , one Hollywood strike, 2 elections and America on the verge of civil war, we finally get to see Dune Prophecy! 😃 Talk about delays 🙄😒🤨
Americans, especially the ones on the right, are too fat to fight in a civil war. 😂 They're not giving up NFL tailgating parties. 😂
Im so excited for this show!
I worry that you'll have 1 crew working on the past and 1 crew working on the future with the show feeling like nothing meshes. If that makes sense. Like I hate when you can tell different people produced/directed each episode.
Shapkerhouse
I certainly hope they tie to the Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation.
So how was the Boni Moroni school established on Wallach-Eli?
Sounds very HOTD season 1
So long as it isn't another series/movie that's all about women showing men they can do everything better than they can do I'll watch it.
The Rings of Girl Power
I mean, it worked super well for The Witcher season 1, right? Oh wait, actually most people apparently hated it 😅 well, who knows. Maybe they'll do it better.
As loong they do not subervt the original Dune story and their characters. I would hate for Dune to get the sequel Star wars treatment where everythign before basically was made null and void.
So respect rhe lore and the characters that've come beforehand.
Oh my God no!
based on the prequel novels = zero interest in watching the show
Oh no....they're 'drawing inspiration' and creating their own direction. I have heard such lines many times before on the way to ruining great IP's.
OMG Anderson's dreck? I'm fairly certain anything inspired by the new Dune books will not be good...those books are contagiously bad.
So it's basically a story about the spice Girls?
If it doesn't include Little Timmy Soy Boy it has more of a chance. But I'm skeptical about everything coming out of the modern "entertainment" industry.
Much prefer the sound of your voice on this one. Less stilted and scripted and more relaxed. 🙂
This show will be the Dunecolite... take note
I've got a baaaad feeling about this...
The Harkonnen coward thing happened 10k years before the events of Dune?
That's a long time to be angry about something.
Can we agree upon the use of the term "Duniverse" (pronounced DOON-i-vers)?
Most of the UK will still end up pronouncing it June.
So they went from a story of powerful women manipulating prominent men from behind the scenes to powerful women and also prominent women.
Every single male role must be subverted to be a female role now.
They already have a focus for the show which is the BG who are the actual hand that controls the empire but they need to have the central character in the empire story also be female.
I have bad feelings about that show. I sense disaster similar to Rings of power
You had my interest but now you have my attention this tale of middle aged women and their machination needs to be told
I highly doubt the writers and creators understand why the bene gesserit are doing what they do. What their goal really is. They are not feminists. They are a religious sect.
And creating "the one" is only one part of the puzzle. It is important to understand why and what will come of it. Also Paul is not the one. His son Leto will be the one.
I will reserve my judgement but so far they failed to draw me in story wise.
I don't know, man. The Brian Herbert stuff is just plain bad. Let's hope they've made changes and adapted the story to be more than just that. We'll see, I guess.
8:12 I suspect they are tiptoeing around the BH/KJA books.
I think they are aware that many fans like myself would reject a direct adaptation of a BH/KJA novel.
I don't know if more matriarchal space witches synchronising their cycles is the best choice here, given the response of late to likewise similar film tropes. It's not only bad writing which sinks film franchises, toxic feminazi driven agendas which vilify and alienate men have a large roll in repulsing revenue.
Oh no.....A prequel idea,F man really bad idea. Please tell me its not made by Disney.Unless frank Herbert's done the writing then i think they should get sue'd
I know it's a detail and I don't mean to be rude or intrusive but what happened to your voice? It seems different...
It'll be interesting to see if they make it a girlboss show when they're basically the biggest villains in the history of the Duniverse.
Umm, the Bene Gesserit are an all-female organization and they steer politics and eugenics in their favor. If you’re worried about “girlbosses” then you’re wasting your time with this show.
They picked the lamest time line to run it from. They could have gone back to the war against my cymeks brothers and Omnius the overlord. But you know, they are going to go off script here you can see. Oh well. 🤖🤖🤖
they lost me at a nonlinear story, its fails too many times and breaks you out of your immersion. Firm pass on this new show
I dislike the movies and I have little faith in this.
L
Sorry, but the sets and the costuming for this series just look cheap and ugly.
.../sigh Frank Herbert is my favorite author, and although i liked the last 2 movies, the way they ruined the Paul / Chani relationship ruined the movies for me. I am afraid this is going to be more of that crap.
I'm a massive fan of the '84 movie and even like the mini Series. I finally got around to the First Frank Herbert novel before the new movies. The Chani situation was weird. I kind of worry that she will stop scowling and become the birth of a rebellion against Paul.
It doesn't sound interesting...wanted the butlerian jihad ....the start of the empire...the landsraad...I only bother with the first 3 books the rest is terrible
human stagnation was a key theme of the DUNE novels
You're far more engaging when you speak like this instead of reading from a script.
Sounds very intriguing. Can't wait to watch It
Im wanting to see the creation of the Spacing Guild.
I like this approach. Really looking forward to some more Dune content !!!
People are literally going to expect Villeneuve's Dune movie but in 1hr installments over the course of a few weeks and it's not going to be that. Expectations is going to ruin this show, even if it's good.
Should just have covered what Villeneuve's movies didnt. Could have gone in the same time, but in a different angle, dialogue driven, what The great "maestro", mister Pretentious pants Mossier Villeneuve doesnt like.
It's not that Dune wouldn't deserve tons of movies, TV series and games, I just don't trust anybody in modern media. Not even Villeneuve's version is good enough in my eyes. It's not a joke as everything made before, but not good enough.
I don't know why i would watch this show, just looks like GoT and loads of characters talking in rooms. I honestly have no interest, the way shows have gone on recent times too is drag it out as long as possible to get people to subscribe longer. A big selling point of the Dune movies is Denis's outspoken passion on the source material, who's even doing this show? I won't be watching, just continue the main saga and complete all the sequel books!!!
I would rather see a story separate from the Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson novels. I was not impressed with those prequels at all and the absolute mess of retconning so much history in those books made it a mess. Maybe the show can fix all that, I hope so. I'll give it a chance, but not gonna get my hopes up.
I have allowed myself to get my hopes up.
Mark my words: this is gonna try so hard to be House of the Dragon with Rings of Power style writing.
I worry that it may suck and the Messiah movie will be ruined by the TV show
There are people who like the Brian Herbert stuff - I can’t understand it, but no accounting for taste. If the show is based on or similar to the garbage that BH put out to squeeze money out of his father’s vision, that’s a hard pass for me.
I hope this doesn't turn out to be Dune: Gone With the Wind.
