"Musical Motors" - Is That A Lifter Tick I Hear??? How Long Will This One Last?

- Let's swap a motor!
I have changed motors in my 1966 Chevy Biscayne more times than I've put gas in the car. The last 454 bent a rod and caused all sorts of issues. Who would of thought that a wiped out lifter 2 weeks ago would have caused all these problems? Bad lifter, to wiped cam, into bent rod, into complete motor swap.
Luckily I had a "good" small block Chevy in stock. The "new" motor wasn't exactly a direct bolt in but we got her dialed together between the frame rails.
First start with open headers is ALWAYS a good time!

If it does go to your head--at least the new garage has wider doors! 😆 Keep up the good work Dan, your suffering for your fans is legendary and appreciated!!!
Love the Comp Scams tshirt Dan. After what happened to you, I'd wear it with pride!
Love the Comp Scams t-shirt Dan!!! Nothing beats an old small block Chevy...
My husband recognized that squirt bottle before he saw the name on it. He worked at Amway for 43+ years. Best to both of you, and to your dad too, of course, from Michigan.
I think the 350 chev is a better match for the 66 anyway. If you decide to rebuild that 454, make sure you have it hot tanked to get all the junk out of it. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes, it keeps things real!
Yep, it's all about clean when assembling any short block. ( I wire brush and gun clean my main oil gallys 3 or 4 times AFTER the machine shop did it.)
To be honest, a BBC in a first gen F body is a real BITCH ! to fight that big ass sucker in as it's 3 times as tight in a camaro and that BB is 900 pounds ! I have yet to get one in without smashed fingers & much blood & hours of swaring 4 letter words! The Pontiac motor in a first gen Firebird are ever worse.
Dan,
I think it's a big car needs a big engine. I had a 69 Chevy Caprice, it came with a 396. After driving a car with a 350, and the 396, there was no way I would have settled for the small block. That was back in the 1980's though, so maybe today the small block might get better fuel mileage. Or an LS
@@bertgrau3934 Yes, a bigger engine is always more fun. But that 350 he has sounds mighty healthy 😄 I'm sure its got plenty for a 3500 lb car. That Caprice was closer to 4000 lbs. I think I'd want a little more push power in it too!
@@hydroy1 how? Ponchos are smaller than the bbc.
Totally agree flush all the engine contaminants out of the 454 before reassembly
it's gonna be rumblin again in no time!!! I can almost smell the tire fire!!!! Right on Dan!
From what I remember. The Small block fuel pump is different than a big block pump. The rod will run at a different position. I have heard of others doing it only to have the pump arm break. I have a new Edelbrock big block fuel pump. On the instructions it has a warning not to use on a small block engine.
The 66 Impala we had when I was growing up had a 327 in it, so that small block looks just right to me, lol. This is my all-time favorite project of yours. Kind of sad to see it coming to an end, although you were most definitely due for a win.
Small Blocks are awesome!
The old hood hinges they always get you one way or the other. I always slip a hommade foam sleeve over them. It blunts the pain.
Small block Chevy can't beat them! It will make a nice daily driver.
I used to watch VGG, but your channel is so much more enjoyable. It’s nice to see regular people working out of their garage. Keep up the good work!
Thanks dude! Derek's a good guy in my books.
Yup, here today watching Dan fire his old small block 'cause Leno is featuring a '50 Merc that was converted to electricity. Yawn. 🥺
An old friend of mine once told me " You may whoop me, but I don't stay whooped!". Keep the faith and carry on my Canadian friend!
These kind of videos are fantastic . It's hot rodding at its finest. Real automotive issues . Very cool
👉🐿👈
The SBC is one of the best engines ever made, little modifications and they're screamers!!! Plus, they are cheaper, easier to work on, and high revving. Big blocks are cool but SBC is where it's at for this project!!!
Nice to hear her running, also love the t-shirt!! 🤣
With the ability to go from 265 cubes all the way to 440 cubes ( bored & stroked ) plus being only 500 pounds in iron, there is no reason to use anything else but SBC on the street. Add to that all around they just have less issues if built correctly. It is common to get 400.000 miles out of them if you change oil every 1,000 miles with a Wix or NAPA gold filter. True they do eat cams & lifters, after 300.000 miles, but you can get an extra 100.000 after that if you run composit head gaskets (Fel Pro Blue) from the beginning.
The big gap from the water pump to the core support was all filled in with a Fan Shroud from the factory still availale from OPG classics or many others. (make sure you get the lower S clips to)
Holy crap...I went thru the whole video thinking it was ironic that you were wearing a Comp Cams t-shirt, then at 28:50 something into the vid, I actually read it and pretty near choked to death on my coffee..
Touche' Canadian brother, touche'!
😂
It's so nice not having to worry about the paint job. Makes it so much easier.
So so nice
haha..Love the Comp SCAMs shirt!!..and Honestly man, I think it's much easier to pull and reinstall engines with the trans attached. At least it is in the multiple 1st gen Camaros and C/10s I've done. That seems like a pain in the butt.
after the second watch where i wasnt constantly interrupted i noticed that shirt, how epic.
Halfway through this engine swap and you're already scheming about putting the big block in a camaro. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks like that. Hopefully this engine works out in the Biscayne, you're due for a win.
Dan that was a Win that Small block will have more then enough power for the 66 Great Job 👍👍
Do not worry about denting thoughts headers one bit. I watched an episode of engine masters and they came close to closing off a couple of headers that way and the engine didn't even notice...
Yes i love changing cams while the motor is hanging from a hoist! BRAVO! carry on!
Win! You deserved that, the BBC is a bummer, but it can be fixed. Now it is time for the 2 door Biscayne to burn the tires off!
Glad to see you win one. You deserve it. Engine sounds pretty wicked. Probably pushing about 340 hp I would guess. Thanks for sharing, Dan. 👍
Probably more like 270-300.
to quote dalton at pole barn garage : "why do i keep doing this? why? to screw the next guy? thats me! quit doing this!!"
I put a 327 and trany in a 63 Impala in one knight. Although I was 17 and knew everything.. You got this.. Old man ..
Happy for you Dan! The small block sounds great but looks like half the engine is missing after seeing a big Block in there! Have a good one Buddy 👍
I'm praying for you Dan. To the God of speed.
Don't worry about dimpling the header. Engine Masters did an episode where they dimpled the hell out of one and it made almost no difference.
I dated a girl with dimples, Nancy, she actually performed much better than most of the girls without dimples. She could also drive a car in reverse at amazing speeds.
Awww...the sound of success!..thank you Dan and Dani for helping guys like us keep the culture alive!..P.S. I stole your quote: "We are enthusiasts, not professionals".
It was a nice moment haha
@@DDSpeedShop yes it was, man, I hope to get the chance to meet y'all at the power tour next year..I should have one of my jalopys out for the ride finally!
Gotta love those "CB" titles !! I will click on every darn one of them too!!

Struggling can either make or break someone but if your able to get through the Struggling ,is when its always possible to learn more about anything and just make things happen sometimes even if it isn't Try #1 like you attitude bro ! The discouraged look on your face on every episode of the biscayne because of this battle knows that this is always a great episode! I know the fight as well with my own screw ups 😤 keep going on this car it's actually pretty sweet car you got !
First time comment here bruh. I am an old dude and therefore, old school. I ALWAYS bolted the motor and tranny up outside the car, tilted the combo and slipped the trans tail shaft down through the tunnel and onto a homemade steel cart with a backstop for the tailshaft to butt up against. You can ziptie it to the cart at that time or just wing it (my personal fav). Of course, the tranny should be partially drained or your deck gets a bath. Just some old school advice from the old school bunch. I had a 64 chevy shoebox that was an SS with a 283. Pulled the mini-rat out and shoehorned a 396 into it with a 4 spd. The motor mounts bolted up. That's right. I pulled the long bolt out and put it right back in when i set the BB down on the mounts. Of course, this is a simplification but is essentially what was done. Never done a 454 but several 427s and turbo 350s and 400s are interchangeable. It was a quite common upgrade because the 400/400R4 has adjustable bands where the 350 does not. Keep on truckin brother. What you do is old school too. "If you don't have something, you either do without or make/modify it to suit your purpose" . That my friend IS old school thinking and doing.
Back in the early seventy's, I had an uncle in New Mexico with a 67 Impala small block. That engine looked so small I couldn't believe it would move the car, it did and it hauled ass.
I've got a bunch of sbc's, a old wore out 350 saved me in 2020 when my built 350 ate its second comp cam... four sbc's, one nice 283, the original 283 out of my car, my worn out 350 and a built 350 that ate two camshafts ( currently at a machine shop, I told him I'm in no hurry for it.)
Glad the Nova's old 350 is getting that Biscayne on the road!
love the "comp scams" shirt!
I'm sure it's in the other comments but I definitely prefer stabbing them in together. It's so easy to get a transmission to lineup with an engine on the stand....lol
Nice to see more smiles and more wins
I subbed for the Biscayne, I have a 66 Impala. I just did a "cheap" rebuild on the 283 last year, it runs great. I watched your last vid on the big block, it looks like an easy save to me. That's unfortunate what happened but I hope you can put it back together on the cheap.
Hey Dan....pro tip..( not really lol). When putting a engine in with the transmission still in the car, I find it easier to set it in without the engine mounts on the block. It allows more wiggle room to line the tranny up. Once you have a few bolts in the transmission, raise it all back up together...re install engine mounts to the block and Cary on. This has worked well for me over the years. Keep the great videos coming my friend. Feeling your pain all the way down in East Tennessee. From one old hot rodder to another....just do what ya love. The right way is usually whatever works at the time. Love the channel Dan. Thank for sharing all your adventures.
Put it in with the mounts "off" the engine. My bad!!! Blame it in auto correct lol
Old guy tip.
Put the bolt for the passenger side motor mount in from the rear. To avoid having to remove the fuel pump when you pull it again hahaha
Finally a win! What an ordeal... I feel for ya man, that thing has been kicking your butt!
Have I not been paying close attention? This is the first time I've noticed the "comp scams" shirt. Love it 😂😂
I seen all of your happiness dan great to see you have been down in weeds the last few days good to see something go right for you. Cop watcher red Winstead from tupelo Mississippi. ❤😎
Nice job, holy crap at 25:19 I thought a mouse ran through your garage when you were setting the timing. Then I saw it was a leaf. Keep up the great work
Sounds like a definite win in my book 👍
I had a 64 impala with a 350. The engine sat way back and it had a huge fan shroud, the thing was factory and corrugated steel, a huge heavy pain in the ass to work around. If I remember right it also had an extension on the fan that was 2/3 inches to push it closer to the radiator. Different body but, I'm guessing, basically the same under the hood. Looks like a winner!
Almost ready for a test drive around the block. Can’t wait to see her driving after the drama you’ve had
Coming up next!
Dan i really enjoy watching you work in your shop. Your shop looks like mine, a explosion in a shit house..i would really watch you and “vice grip garage”… keep it up i when i grow up i want to be just like you…..I’m 79 years old but I’ll live long enough just for spite….Keep the video comin…regards, George Cole..
It hasn’t beat you. It’s just put you on hold.
I agree sometimes it’s better to put a project on hold for a period of time and then regroup.
Cheers
With my 66 Chevelle I put big block frame mounts in when I swapped out from a straight 6. That said the rat would work with small block mounts. The difference is the rat mounts bring the engine forward from the firewall for distributor clearance. My 67 El Camino had a 454 when I bought it. Small block mounts but it worked ok. Switched to a hot 427 later and switched from TH-400 to Muncie M-20 four speed. Fun car. Wish I had kept it.
Fantastic. Keep up the great work and I will keep on watching
Dan, love the work u do!! Dealing with that worn out big block would have crushed me!
You rock!! Way to push through!!!
Takes me back to when I was young it was all fun though
You mentioned about trucks I'm wondering how many of your subs remember you doin a long bed to short bed conversation. Great job👍👍
Grab a pair of vise grips for the hood hinge springs off 👍🏼 About a three second job makes life way better!
Say Dan, on those hood hinges, I remove the springs with a kung fu grip and just push the hinges back down and out of the way. Happy trails.
Fits like OJ,s glove ,,, perfect!!!!!
Just do it dans way that all that matters the way you want to put it together it’s your car you know the way you want it keep up the good work
Very Nice job Dan
Mortskie and Puddin brought me to you. Looking forward to watching vids.
Moral of the story: always keep a good small block in stock just in case. The highlight of this video for me was the "OH, there's the other hood hinge!" because we've ALL done that at some point in our engine swapping experiences.
I show it all haha
@@DDSpeedShop Is there a reason not to close them back up while working or?
Hey Dan
Huge Yes sent your way.
Take care
Due for a win indeed...Good luck Dan.
Great job Dan
Winner, winner chicken dinner! LOVE the Comp Scams shirt lol! 🇨🇦🍻
I put a 350 in my 66 caprice in place of the 396 boat anchor. A good running small block was a huge improvement. I regeared to 4.11s and small blocks love RPM. The motor mounts bolted right up the Trany bolted right up gota uses the 168 tooth flex plate then you can use the same starter. The engine wound up with the same setback as the 350 in my 70 impala. You have to use a shroud on the fan or it’ll overheat.
I've been fighting with dropping a 350 in my 64 Chevy !!. The room you have in that engine bay makes me jealous. I should have just gotten a bigger car to go with the 350!.
Yea! Bingo! Sounds great and so far it isn’t spitting broken teeth out!
If I remember right there was a set of plates for the motor mounts that you could get that lifted every thing up when you put them in
There's a right way to do something. There's a wrong way. And there's the DD Speed Shop way. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a 67 Parisienne 4 door hardtop with a 327 and it's cool to see this cause even though they have completely different bodies they are very similar underneath.
Thanks Dan. Keep up the hard work. You are doing Great. Dont let the trolls bother you. Regards from Ody Slim
I know my comment is a little late, but it should go right in,in 93 I blew up the 396 in my 67 Chevelle and dropped a small block in right in its place.
Like a good Hard Rock song, when I listen to it, so do my neighbors!! 🚗✨✨✨✨✨💨
Excellent determination! Great content 👍
Nice. Glad it seems like it's getting better for you.
Dan, there is no Judgements here. You have over 100k loyal minions and Dani. You're a G.O.A.T!!
There's something therapeutic about watching someone else go through all the pain and suffering when it comes to cars.
Sucks about the big block but man, that 350 sounds rather spicy
Splendid recovery!
real people ,love watching you guys.reminds me of me when i was younger,73 now and still working on my hot rods drive them daily.your video,s are better than any reg t v shows except Ian Rosall because its real,
Ian would love Dan
I’m 78 tomorrow and drive my 350 powered 39 Ford every day except deep winter. had it for 56 years now.
@@williamcarey6592 that's awesome. Have a great birthday tomorrow.👍
Oya. Gotta keep em alive!
Most relatable youtuber I follow! I'd love to see you rebuild the BBC and drop in the 69 Camaro!
If i didnt live so far away, i would come over and help you out. Gonna watch the rest of the vid now. Hopefully i can help a bit from here.
You really need a "WIN" The tribulations (bleeding knuckles etc) are apart of "Hot Rodding" They make successes alot more enjoyable On another note I pop the hood springs so the hinge lays flat - no longer in the way
I always wondered why you were so hooked on the big blocks. I have always used small blocks. My own preference I get just as much power and easier to work with
I agree, you can make as much power with less weight.
Congrats Dan!
Awesome 👍🏽👏 yeah I think do a rebuild on the big block and put it in the Carmaro is a good plan 👍🏻😀
Now that's the car you should be playing with is the Camaro definitely would love to see that one going and see what you do to it
Love how you’re wearing a compscams shirt lol
I would keep that big block and have it hot tanked and make sure its all good to go get reman rods and put it together for the Camaro!
Keep up the great work. Okay. Awesome indeed.
Good to have a win
Big block in the 1st gen Camaro yes sir,30 years driving one. 4speed 9 in ford has been a blast. That motor out of the Nova was a great motor we watched you drive it up til it got the bbc. You were dew some good luck that is a car now. I don’t like 4 doors.
First? Wow, what an honor! Big block and small block share the same motor mounts, transmission mounting flange, and distributors, some of the frame mount pads are different to mount the big block lower, but they bolt in the same
WOW. You pressed on and got er dun! Just some details, but inspiration to all to NEVER GIVE UP! In the end, a feel good video!
You have said it before and i quote: the struggle is real!
At least mounts were good. Thinking you could use the headers in my shed, but i do have a small block they should go on to.
And she’s a runner! Well done!
And i got my entertainment for the day. Awesome.
when i was a kid i took a396 out of my 66 caprece and installed a283 ,drove it for 2 years ittl fit right in nice abut chevy
