I was kinda worried for a bit you were gonna also coincidentally put a video up with this HDMI mod and it'd basically be you probably complaining about how you completely borked your PSP because of all the instructions Elliot said were missing or something. XD
I was like you can just get cables. I use a set of original hd cables that work on my new tv. I do it mainly to play some of the umd movies for a bit of nostalgia
There was also a plugin for modded PSPs that would use the USB to output video to a computer; i don't remember what it was called and there were limitations to it (no audio, and it needed to be connected to a computer)
If it didn't remove the disk drive, I'd say this is a great mod. That said, you have a good point about systems whose drive is broken or won't read disks...in that case hey you're not losing anything.
Also, if you remove the UMD drive, it is possible to fit in a much larger/higher capacity battery into the PSP (I've at least seen in be done with 2000/3000 models). I've heard you can fit up to a 5000mAh battery in a PSP and that will give you way more battery life than any regular PSP battery. The PSP also uses more battery when using the UMD drive compared to running games off external storage. So if you do have a broken UMD drive or you don't mind sacrificing the UMD drive, a battery mod might be more worth it.
@@bigbangbot-SuperSqank I did that on my PSP-2000 but you also need the little board that's inside a PSP battery. I used a really cheap aftermarket battery and unfortunately the charging board in there is total crap. It doesn't really check the voltage and works more on a timer. It goes from 100% to 10% in 1 and a half hour and then it blinks for another half hour. At 0% it still goes but the PSP goes into sleep mode every minute. You really need the board from a real Sony battery to do this mod properly.
@TheRetroFuture now that you mentioned this I may have a go at this later cuz my new screen came with a dead pixel and a half so may operate again later. But main thing & idk if something happened when I replaced the screen but basically umd drive faulty but not game breaking. Luckily it's modded
Should’ve done a IPS MOD while you were already in it and had it apart, but still a entertaining video as always. Loving the whole comedic thing you’ve been doing with videos lately 😅
I got the value pack for Christmas in 2005, bringing it to school was such a flex, most people were still using GBAs. Seeing the packaging brings back so many memories, including Mims "this is why I'm hot" which was the first song I downloaded onto it because it was popular at the time
Please don't get rid of the original battery - I'm sure you already know, but all/most PSP replacement batteries have inferior control circuits to the original that crash in strange ways when USB charging is on. The replacement control PCB then needs resetting by shorting a couple of pins. Solution: disassemble the original Sony battery, salvage the control circuit and replace the lithium cell.
LOL this was me fixing my phone. I replaced the screen but broke the headphone jack, the camera ribbon cable, and the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable. At least I know how to open it back up now!
Component cables are a thing for PSP 2000 and 3000. Edit: As the video goes on, it becomes more of a disaster and really justifies the cost of the component cable, even if the resolution isnt the greatest and it doesnt fill the screen.
So glad I bought that cable when it was still cheap and available second hand at a local GameStop. I hate that I missed out on official cables for my PS2/PS3. Third party cables are trash.

Sony made a Composite and Component cable that would plug in to the PSP-2000. No modding needed. it works very well. Not the same as HDMI, but my video projector can take a component input. So game on!
Ngl psp was amazing i had one and very easy to mod also there was a cool feature to be able to play it on the tv without this mod but its a much bigger pain
I remember my old PSP 2000, I could open and close it for almost blindly, sure I lost half of the screws and the UMD drive made weird noises due to the lack of some of them but still worked, I ended up flipping it for an electric guitar which I never learned how to play correctly and ended up flipping it again for a freaking XBOX 360 later on, I had great dealing skills back then.
Not sure if you've heard this before, but you sound similar to The Spiffing Brit. Interesting! Also, I love your content! The restoration videos are so satisfying.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the quality of the video and make it clear that I am passionate about mods, upgrades and restorations. But in this case I believe it would be more interesting to purchase the version of the PSP 3000 that allows connection to the television via an AVI cable. Or if the need is to use HDMI, perhaps a PS Vita TV would be even more interesting. Making it possible to play the extensive catalog of PSOne, PSP, PSVita and other emulators.
...but the PSP-1000 natively supports HDMI, you just need the right cable, which you can get for less than $10... Granted they removed that port on the PAP2000 and PSP-3000 models, but you opened the video saying that's a PSP-1000... So you didn't need this mod...
Back in my teenager days I use to watch this guy because how calm his videos is and now I came back it’s like he switch personality. Wth happen to him?😂
Hey, but you can stream the screen from psp using a plugin, or share the screen on pc with Remote Joy Lite thingy using just the usb and all that for free
this is why i have a 3000 model. Built in video out to composite and much better screen (though there are drop in ips screens that are better than both). and there are external upscalers and hdmi converters so you can have video out in HD and your umd drive! I love my little disks and you cant take them away from me! Love your videos though! and welcome to the wonderful world of the psp! its an amazing portable that just didnt get the support from sony that it deserved A few quick notes though: you can change the language on the psp through the settings. I had a nifty blue japanese exclusive model (that my brother nicked from me) that i did this to. And as far as i remember the psp is region free (except for like the movies or somthing). Also custom firmware is trivially easy to get running on any model of the psp, so you'll be able to run backups of your game iso's fairly easily, and there are quite a few japanese exclusive games that have fan translations made. Keep up the good work!
Impressive how adding a simple HDMI out is more destructive than turning the whole PSP into a Raspberry pi computer with the PSPi mod. That mod is 100% reversible and a way better mod for an old PSP.
I love PSP, though I am a fan of the Slim model more than the original. Disassembly of the system is actually not that bad apart from the disc drive and I love how they dealt with speakers. No stupid wires soldered to the screen, just contact pads.
Upgrade that PSP needs is possibility to stream from PC. Nobody did it but it would actually make PSP better console than many modern "retro games and streaming" handhelds
I think that this was the first console I opened in my life. I didnt even know what a ribbon cable was. I was amazed by how many screws this thing had and thought that It is an awesome work of engineering
You will need a pandora battery and one of the many custom firmwares (neuron 6.61 is my favorite), install LEDA and Prometeus, after that you not only will be able to play psp games from the card (without umd ) but youll be able to play PS1, SNES and GBA games if you put, popsloader, gba and snes emulators, up to 32 gb pro-duo card will become recognizable by the system. My beloved PSP died a couple of years ago after years and years of giving me my best handheld console experience.
Actually i did use the IR a lot with a software emulating tv ir controllers. It basically learned the buttons imput and asigned a buttom combination for each action and there you go, you had a psp universal IR control for any device that use IR of course.
0:21 That might seem like stupid question, but did you try putting it in refrigerator? Sometimes battery doesn't work because controller board inside the battery glitches. To fix that you need to reset it by cutting off its power. Reducing the temperature of a lithium ion battery below zero celcius for a long time can do exactly that Ps: sorry for my English, it's not my first language
I play all my games from a MicroSD card so removing the UMD drive wouldn't bother me (and I keep spools of silicon insulated wire for high accuracy stuff like this), but you called it: the latency is a deal breaker. Hopefully in the future something better will be available that can also coexist with a LiPo battery mod, but in the meantime I'm just enjoying my PSP as a portable retro gaming machine.
I remember you could get a component cable for the psp. You could use that to play/record on a tv while using a unmodded console with real games. I doubt it would look any different quality wise.
Anything with input lag is a straight turn off for me. I just cannot fathom any kind of delay when I'm trying to play a game, no matter how small. But I can see how this might be beneficial for people who want to stream/capture PSP gameplay while still playing the game off the internal display. - It's a shame about the UMD drive though.
No UMD is a dealbreaker for me. I asked, in 2020, for help getting my PSP disc drive repaired (turned out it and my Power Stone game disc each just needed cleaning) and others told me to “just get rid of the disc drive” without a thought for the fact that others may not want to play games the same way as them! I normally don’t like to mod systems, I’d rather keep them (as) authentic (as possible), but I would like to be able to play certain games with certain modifications made, some of which I’d like to see but don’t exist yet. I would get a hack for Crazy Taxi Fare Wars that reinstates the Offspring music but I’m sure there’s an MP3 editing program out there that lets me paste in the MP3s of the songs and trim them to the length they are heard for in the original game! More importantly, there really needs to be a patch for ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin’ Trails that censors and replaces the Lostprophets logos seen on certain courses. You don’t want to know why. Have a good one!
0:39 Oh, I beg to differ sir. A lot of us actually appreciate one of the best handhelds ever made. I'm especially fond of the 1000 model for it's sturdy built quality. They don't make em like this anymore.
My PSP-1000 was my first real foray into modding. What a neat little device. Those UMDs were garbage, I got rather good at regluing the UMD enclosures.
The white UMDs with the clear center are the worst, when mine break I get clear cases and they stay together better but I have a 1001 vita on 3.60 with Enzo and adrenaline now so I only use UMDs to dump them to my computer and copy them to my vita and CECHL-01 PS3 on evilnat 4.89.
I kinda feel like using a male micro to female full HDMI adapter would almost be preferable to a cable that has male micro and male full on the ends; with the male-micro to female-full cable, you can use any HDMI cable to connect it to your TV, whereas if you get the micro-to-full male-to-male cable, the length of that cable is all you've got - so if you find yourself with a need to position the PSP further from the TV, you can do it easily with the male-to-female adapter by using a longer cable - which can be repurposed for something else as and when necessary - whereas the male-to-male cable will only really ever be useful for your PSP, and the handful of fondleslabs with micro-HDMI out.
The infrared sensor really was never used. Some homebrew applications took advantage of it like IRShell, but they were really only for turning the PSP into TV remotes.
The tv remote homebrew was neat but I also remember another program that allowed to transfer files via IR. It was very dodgy and you had to line up the 2 sensors and it would take forever to transfer a simple picture.
This is probably a dumb question, but, how on earth do you remember where everything went (IE, cables, switches, buttons, etc) when it's time to put everything back. Do you take photos during the tear down? I go target shooting from time to time and am terrified every time I have to clean a firearm (I mean the disassembly and reassembly).
Looks like the board had two chips, likely one translating the video and the other an HDMI scaler. It's a real shame too, because they are likely buffering frames before sending them to the scaler for processing. The only real use I could see with this is to make it easier to capture output for recording video or streaming, but most peeps in that boat are using other methods (component video, emulation, etc.) already...I'd love to see Woozle take a shot at this: His GBA consolizer is fantastic, and he could probably pull off a no cut mod too...
Thank you for doing this so that I know not to.
hahahahahah

Well, the Optical Drive would be useless to me anyway because one day the laser is gonna die.
If this could be improved to where one does NOT have to sacrifice being able to play UMD media, that would be ideal.
At least you get pictures. I guts swapped a psp 2000 and 3000 one time with nothing.
