  • The first broken Mercedes E-Class in 2021 - probably.
It looks like the fuel pump gave up.

My E200k died beside a road this Aug. Mechanic came and declare one of the pump kaput. He drove a 15 miles round trip to get Continental fuel pumps for both of so call saddle fuel tank. The black rubber seal for the right side fuel pump disintergrated into the fuel tank. He pick up as much as possible with his bare fingers. Still a bit of small rubber bits remaining in the fuel tank. Total cost USD400. Broke up the old fuel pump. Noted it is some sort of mesh & fabric layer inside as filter for pump intake side.

Typical issue on any Kompressor, no matter the generation. Just be sure that you put petrol in it whenever the level is close to 1/4, other than that, these are awesome engines! I have a CLK200 2000 and a W211 2007 both Kompressors and I wouldn't give them for newer cars that I used to have. :)

Easy fix, thankfully :-) I had this happen on my MGTF a couple of years ago, it involved moving the roof up, then an engine cover which was a total pain. Hardest part was getting the new sender unit to fit in properly and reseating the cover - easy in practice but it drove me up the wall lol

So, should you never leave the tank too close to empty to protect the fuel pump on w211?

      Any car.

That’s correct and Martin’s comment is also right. Practically the electric motor of the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank, so when the level is very low, cooling is affected which turns into extensive wear, quicker than regular use.

@@Elliot_Vulpe Engine/drivetrain-wise? This particular one in the video is the 3rd or so that we have had and apart from a handful of well-know illnesses of the model in general, they were spot on. Sorry to hear that you have a "not so pleasant" experience.
