There is unfortunately nothing i can do about that. If you were to win we can try to sort out a better option but posting to anywhere far be it Australia or America for example going to cost a lot.
The Renaming to VC instead of VIC is because in german we pronounce the V either soft like our W or hard like F. So it could be WIC or FIC, and second is pronounced like a german word for intercourse. So Commodore decided to use VC and advertised it as VolksComputer like Volkswagen.
@@CRG If you google VC20 Volkscomputer Werbung and look at the ads or the box art we had in Germany you can find some pictures. On the german boxes it stated VC20 VolksComputer. I guess it was one of the first home computers on the german market that provided graphics and sound without costing a fortune. When it came to Germany in 1980 I was just 8 years old and not so much interested in computers 😀
Language nerd alert: German V is pronounced much like the English V, there's no equivalent to the English W in German. That's usually in loan words like vase, vicar or villa. In Germanic words it's pronounced just like F and other Germanic languages often spell the same words with an f instead (e.g. Vogel - fågel, Vater - far - father).
You’ve done a cracking job with this. As one of only two other people who saw the state of it before you cleaned it up I can confirm you could taste it.
All good! just watched both back to back (well, 2/3 of one, the other then the last bit of this but you know..) impressive Glen! Nice to see it come good in the end.
Was that a dead desiccated mouse? I thought I saw fur XD. I came here from your second channel which TH-cam recommended to me for some reason. Liked. Subscribed. What a repair!
Firstly thank you for so kindly send this and the other items to me. This machine was a challenge but it was worth it to see it coming to life once again. I'm very proud of how it turned out and I hope it'll bring a lot of money to the charity.
I had the Omega Race cartridge too, maybe it came as a bundle, although as separate products altogether (as in: it didn't came within the Vic20 box, but the two were sold together). I also had Radar Rat Race. Both games scarred my brains with their SFX and music... 😂 Excellent restoration BTW.
Great job Glen. 10 out of 10 to yourself and the other guys who are auctioning off for the charity. I’ll have a look at what’s listed and might just have a cheeky bid or 2.
Awesome Idea 💡 to help out for selling a machine for the charity. I don't need any more computers but I will give some money 💰 to the befriending scheme this year 🎉😁. You and Lee are amazing 🤩 and everyone else involved in the event.
@@CRG I'm sure it will! You did an amazing job and was amazing where it was found to what it looks like now! We are proud of your work and contribution too 😄🙏⌨️🖲️
Just donated 15€, which is unfortunately all I can do at this moment. Would've loved to be more generous but as a great community we can do lots of good things! Also good luck in selling the VC20 for a good amount! Out of interest I will keep an eye on the auction! Hope the new owner will have a lot of fun with it!
That's a very good question, maybe an after thought or maybe they wanted to keep the ac away from the logic to avoid any interference. Knowing commodore they just forgot about it until it was too late.
I always wonder ... are these "wrinkles" normal for old pcbs? Do they form over time on the soldering side of a board or do they exist from start? Will it get 'worse' or flake off?
Yes, they are. As far as I know they come from flow soldering and are especially noticable if the process was not dialed in properly or they did push process times a little too far to the fast side.
Great content, Just some advice, Even though WD40 isn't conductive it can ruin boards because of certain chemical elements in it, you would be better off buying a Squeeze spay bottle and use isopropyl alcohol and use that on the board 99%+, Just a bit of friendly help.
This a common misconception. WD40 is a brand these days, and he did mention it was the WD40 Contact Cleaner. So while WD40 itself should not be used on boards under any circumstances, this is essentially WD40 branded DeOxit. They also make WD40 branded silicon and lithium greases too, and I wouldn't recommend coating a board in those either :D
Replace the two orange audio film caps with tiny TDK box film caps. They are much smaller and look better. You can also replace a few of the small ceramic caps with much smaller new ones which gives the board a lower profile look.

🤣 Moo face at 10:50, brilliant!

@@CRG that was the most entertaining unsoldering scene I ever saw on TH-cam. PLease more of it 😀

Thanks for the info, very interesting. Would that then translate to the people's computer?
@@CRG You're right, that's an absolute correct translation.

Thanks Matt. It was all of the horrible but I'm very proud of how it turned out. Hope it raises a lot of cash for the charity.

Nice one. That second VIC board is still salvageable though - VIC chips are still readily available for £10-15, new old stock.
Wow the end of the video was like Christmas, so many extra goodies. And what a great restoration, looks fantastic.
Hot dang! That is a GORGEOUS VIC/VC-20 kit, great job, the new owner will have a blast with that lot!!
No wonder it was found in a collapsed building. I mean did you see the spiders and its home inside it? The previous owner probably did….. 🏠🔥
You're a saint sir
It's all for a great cause and it's the least I can do. Looking forward to joing you for the love stream next weekend. That'll be a fun day.
Look who’s talking!!!

Sorry Lee, that's a combination of fat thumbs, autocorrect, and typing too quickly. It's too perfect to change now though 😅

Great job. Turned out lovely. Always great to see these old machines saved from the bin.😊
It's come up a real treat Glen, great work. And a great cause.
I am very proud of how it turned out. Hopefully it'll bring in a lot for the charity.
Nice to see how this ended up was very close to going in the bin. Now not only will it live on and be enjoyed but also help raise money well done mate

Commodore did a very good job on that version of Omega Race.
Does seem a fun little game. I'll have to spend more time with it before it goes with the charity auction.

A lot'o'swappin'!

was that an afterthought ? why wasn't there just traces on the PCB to do what that cable did

origonally the vic 20 came with nothing i dont think they even did a pack

No dremel tool? 🤪
Dont worry it seen some dremel action but saved that for the 2nd channel video 😉
only thing with replacing thiings it that its giving you deminished returns
It does but I'm covering anything that needs replaced beyond what I can salvage from the spare board. It's all for a good cause.

Keep up good job. But dont cut out your "thinking" its interesting how you think also.
Wow, almost gives Mr. Murray's oilbathed Vic 20 a run for it's money, although somehow this is way worse on the inside
