You are my literal inspiration. I started a bit later for piano, at 13, and I'm trying my ass off. I love every moment, getting a song wrong, and then finally getting it is the best to me. I'm 15 now, looking to continue my musical learning as a classical musician, and hearing you say how you started later in life as well and to see how you got into Julliard, makes my day. As you did, even though it might now mean much to you, I going to be the best I can be.
This is a fantastic comment! I can relate to this so much. I'm 13 now and I restarted piano after a 3 year long hiatus. Even this comment is inspiring. I hope to get in too! Good luck to you!!
Hey man dig the videos. I'm a person who plays the viola (now in a live band setting). I'm glad I stumbled across this channel. I'm tuned in. Thanks for the words
I will definitely keep that in mind for the future! I do plan on recording all of the Suites and putting them up here at some point :) I have the Bourree of the 3rd Suite in my Classical Music playlist if you're interested ;)
+ThatViolaKid Hello, I'm a high school junior who's planning on auditioning for guitar next year, and I was wondering how much does the audition repertoire differentiate from year to year?
Keilone G. I honestly don't know the answer to that question because I've only auditioned once haha. I would imagine it wouldn't change too drastically, if at all. You can find all the requirements on Juilliard.edu!
Another great video! I'm glad you said you don't have to go to Juilliard or a major conservatory in order to be a great musician. That's something I didn't realize until long after I graduated college. It just feels like a great achievement to go to a big conservatory that makes people feel like the cream of the crop. Kinda like ivy league schools.
Thanks for your advice. I just found out I didn't get past preliminaries 😭. I cried for a while because I really did think what I put out there was amazing... I worked so hard. Now I'm questioning everything about myself and my playing. I'm trying to stay positive though because I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
If you look at the number of students at Curtis vs the number of students at Juilliard, you'll find a reason why the acceptance is lower. There are just fewer spots. Not to mention that Juilliard also has other disciplines like Dance, Jazz, and Drama.
Well I've just been rejected by about 10 music schools because I (probably) screwed up in my prescreen videos, but I'm not too mad because I have backup plans: the UCs :)
Hey man loved your video, my audition wasn't for the music program it was for drama. Nonetheless everything you said was applicable. thanks for the advice man. I wish you nothing but the best in life.
Hi I love your videos they have been so much help! I have been playing viola for 3 months now self taught. I play guitar and piano so I think I'm doing well. however any advice from you would be life changing so could I send you a video? just one piece of advice would help.
pulling the corners of my mouth up, too tired to smile. Also thx for this, very helpful, i got the potential but needed some motivation, can't see the end of the road and am feeling a little blue, very dark blue also have some issues with music, only been playing for ten years, but not so much practice, not enough that i feel like i am juliard material yet, need some more practice and a little more effort, also don't see what i'm doing bad on, too enveloped in the music and when it is evident, i just work until it satrts to make sense and kind of getting it, then its dark and the custodians are the only ones in the building. HAYYYYYYLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!
yea lolz, I know just i am in violin two, have been in violin one more often but only with the summer program where we do more tough music like sinfonia in d major where we were moving at a tempo with no difficulty playing together with a crisp sound.
+ThatViolaKid hi I started playing violin in 7th grade and I'm a freshman now. I am (this is confusing but) 3rd chair in second violin but I'm one of four freshman in the top orchestra at our school (yup that was confusing). I love playing violin with my entire being but I don't know if I would be ready to apply to Juilliard straight out o high school. I was wondering how good you were when you got out of high school and if you think it would be remotely possible for me to get in as an under grad
+Alexi Alfieri I didn't think I was good enough to get into Juilliard after I graduated high school, so I didn't even bother auditioning. I started in 6th grade, so I felt the gap was too big. I haven't heard you play, so I wouldn't be able to give you an accurate opinion on whether or not you should apply! I say it can't hurt! :)
Eeek! Thanks for this video, I hope to get in but I have 2 more years till my senior year, but I'm extremely nervous ! I wanna get into Juilliard so bad
hi drew, i really appreciate what u are doing ! thankyou so much.i am abhijit gurjale. i am from india and here there is lack of good teachers, and i am late into this western classical field at the age of 21but i am very very passionate and hardworking student and i was learning indian classical music for almost 15 years. i managed to ltcl at trinity in this 2 years, now i am 23. i am very curious to know than can i apply for julliard next year as i think ill be ready with audition pieces but there is a problem i want to apply for masters because my age is little high and i have done engineering already.i am curiously and most waiting for what got to say. thankyou again !:)
Hey TVK! I know I've mentioned this in a comment I wrote on another one of your videos but, do you have to be a freakishly, child boss prodigy to get into Juilliard?? My piano experience is rather fragmented as I started playing at around 5 or 6, but didn't get classical training until 17. I played from 17-25 years old and stopped because I started school full time. However, i just started back again. I'm getting back on track and I'm pretty advanced classically but not at all in terms of jazz. I hear and read of so many folks that go to Juilliard and Curtis and NEC who have been playing since 3 and it's been their life's work. For me? It hasn't been that way but I still adore the work and I still want to be serious musician so, I'm aspiring to get my masters in music. I guess what I'm asking is, what are they looking for in a student? Are they looking for people who have played from out the womb and have won a slew of awards and competitions?? Does someone like myself, an adult student with passion, getting back into the swing of things, have a chance at getting in just or, does my choppy musical past not fit the profile?? Thanks!!
Your musical past doesn't really matter. I started at age 12, and was accepted as a graduate student--which is arguably much harder than undergraduate studies. All that really matters is how you play, if you have potential, and if the teachers feel inspired to teach you. I would suggest getting a trial lesson
No way man, I picked up the bass when I was about your age (I'm 20 now) and never looked back. I have played and performed with ensembles of all styles and genres. It's never too late to pick up an instrument and start playing music.

+SkinoGreeneVu No way, that's dope!!! Viola pride homie! Thanks for the support man! Anything you'd like to see/hear in particular? :)
yea for sure... I'm just checking it out
I will definitely keep that in mind for the future! I do plan on recording all of the Suites and putting them up here at some point :)
I have the Bourree of the 3rd Suite in my Classical Music playlist if you're interested ;)
Hey Molly, think about it! 100-6.7= 93.3. I was saying the OTHER 92.3 not including yourself, so you have to subtract one more. hehe
Is Juilliard a private institution?? Or is it public??
Fabricio Aguiar Michel Pretty sure it's private
Are there any scholarships??

What's stopping me from going to Juilliard? I'm on the other side of the world... And I don't think it's very cheap
+Katie Brown It's very expensive, yes, but there's not much stopping you. They have a lot of financial aid and they LOVE international students :)
Duuude you give me so much hope I started in eighth grade and Your helping me set up my after high school plan. TYSM

Great video, so true! Thanks for making it. Love it! :)
+Erika Easterly Thank you!!! SO glad you enjoyed it!
Lol "like Curtis," Curtis is harder to enter than Juilliard
+slash6ds Yes, and no. I think they're just different
+ThatViolaKid Well Curtis does generally have a lower acceptance rate, but I suppose you're right, it doesn't make it...harder? Mmm

Hey man I just felt was doing badly in the concerto competition, and this video really back me up. Thanks man, and I'm a brass player.
+Zavid Lan I'm sorry to hear about the concerto competition! It happens though homie! Glad you're feeling better :)
+ThatViolaKid thans dude, we musicians need to tough things out because that's how it makes us better : )
Zavid Lan Truth
+ThatViolaKid I suggest you do a video that titles "What to do if you get in Juilliard" XD
Zavid Lan Hahaha any suggestions for things to do when you get into Juilliard?
Hey man loved your video, my audition wasn't for the music program it was for drama. Nonetheless everything you said was applicable. thanks for the advice man. I wish you nothing but the best in life.
+Miguel Chavez I appreciate your kind word buddy! I really means a lot!!!

Camryn Bauer saxophonists
Does Juilliard have Acting, like for the big screen? i want to be a TV actress.

No way man, I picked up the bass when I was about your age (I'm 20 now) and never looked back. I have played and performed with ensembles of all styles and genres. It's never too late to pick up an instrument and start playing music.
Absolutely not! I picked up piano a few months ago and I’m already 13! Just work your ass off and put in your best effort!
