Juilliard is my dream, but not because of the name recognition (although that is a plus). I want to go to Juilliard because it has some of the best faculty in the country, some of the most exciting programs opportunities for young composers like me, and because Lincoln center is a musician's paradise.
This sounds similar to what a bunch of us freshman music majors were told on the first day: “most of you sitting here now will not graduate from this program. You will not be talented enough, want to work hard enough, or not have enough passion.” It was true. I barely made it myself. Always awe at those that work so hard in music. Keep in mind that there are other great programs. Life will not end if you don’t get accepted. You are still an amazing musician. You can still develop your skills. You can still be a musician. You can still get a job doing what you love. Maybe my taste in music is just “ordinary”, but I honestly can’t name more than one person that went to Juilliard. I’m sure others have influenced my life though.
I actually never even knew what Julliard was until I found your channel, lol. (I live in Australia, so I never really care about what happens up in the US) I'll be applying this to my other dream goals, though. Thanks! :D
True true trueeee 💕 My main dream in life is to just really touch the hearts of as many people with my music, singing, acting, writing and filmmaking. Thank you for these words! I always enjoy your videos 😊
Great thought provoking video as usual. For a while during my undergrad I had this idea that Juilliard was the crowning jewel that I absolutely had to have. IfI ever had the opportunity to go there I would be more than thankful. But it isn't so much a must have anymore. I'm taking a year off in between undergrad and grad school and it's now allowing me to see all of the other magnificent institutions in the country and even in NYC. Mainly at a school I want a quality education, excellent teachers and great opportunities, things that you can make for yourself at many different schools.
I've been watching your videos for a long time now, and every time timber give me a very important advice for me to keep in mind. I have to thank you for that. This video also helped me a lot. I already visited the Juilliard school, and after touring the school I fell in love with it. The campus itself is amazing, and a teacher I contacted was very helpful and for what I've seen I want I go there because I feel it would be what I want. No because of the name, but because the school itself gives me this drive to be better. Then again, this video reveals very important things. I'm very likely to not get into Juilliard (even though I'm gonna try my hardest). Having many options for schools is what I'm going for. I visited a few other conservatories so far, and contacting teachers in them and just what I did to Juilliard. So even if I don't get to Juilliard I can have my dream in music. I think this is a good idea. Again, thanks for your awesome videos. They really help me a lot.
Thank you so much for the video!!! You really opened my eyes that Juilliard isn't the only school and that my biggest dreAm is to become the best musician and share music to the world!!! But Juilliard is still my dream school bc of the access of the best teachers that can challenge me! You're amazing TVK😊
"No matter what anime teaches us.." >> Lol!! I like your tough love man. Juilliard actually used to be my dream a long time ago. At least one of my dream schools.
For me I think there were many famous music school that you can get into like Trinity or even Yale has putting many resources and afford into music. I had dreamt to get intio Juilliard sometimes ago. But I realize that my standard cannot reach as high as Juilliard wants. Instead of getting into Juilliard or other music school, I want to compose a song that can inspire people and to perform in the streets around the world ! It may sound weird but it will be really great if you can bring happiness to people ! Thank you, your video remind me not to be stubborn on just going into Juillard , there are still many ways to achieve your dream
I always wanted to go to Juilliard since I was 12, it was my dreamed school and I thought it was perfect for me. And about three weeks ago I visited and I did not feel like there is where I wanna be, I did not like the environment as much as I thought. Now that I have seen that video, I have think how reaching a personal goal is more important that the name of the school in you diploma, it is also what you do, your job what are going to get you when you want. You actually really inspire me with this short video. Thanks!!
As an addendum to this, I've seen music students from other schools talk about how they all maintained their connections after graduation, and helped each other succeed, that their graduation from those schools opened lots of doors for them and continues to do so decades later. And they all also say Julliard students aren't known for this behavior, that once your'e out the door, Julliard basically forgets you exist and the graduates scatter to the wind to fend for themselves.
I think my dream is to just be as happy as I can be and to make others happy. And to do that I'll keep playing music :)) But I also want to be a 'master' of the arts and I think Juilliard would help me with that. Thanks for the eye opening video !!
Thanks Drew, this really cheers me up and helps me. I just went through my first break-up (he was a violist like me) and I'm trying to get my mind off it. hugs!!!
For me, it's not that getting into Juilliard is the end-all be-all, but being able to put on my resume that I went to Juilliard would be an incredible asset. People would see that in my bios and resume and be like, wow, this guy's got legit credibility. If I went to a public university and put that on my resume, that ethos might not come across. I feel like that could be the difference between getting a job or not.
Not really true, to be honest. What matters most is how you play. I promise you, most people in the industry don't even bat an eye if you went to Juilliard. It really doesn't have the weight you think it does--just trust me on that!
This video was tough to swallow,I wanted to go to The Juilliard School since I was 6.It was just befitting to me because my mentor(May he rest in love and music) attended there and that's all I ever wanted to accomplish. Now I just want to pull out my weave lol
I play the trumpet and piano, and some people told me that I will not afford to attend Juilliard just because I don't come from a rich family and have been told I am not a life time experienced musician, I've been playing for 5 years only. Juilliard is somewhere I wanna go. And thanks for the heads up about Juilliard :).
Your videos have really helped me with deciding on a musicschool to go to. I would love to go to juilliard to study guitar performance with Sharon Isbin but Its nice to hear something like this every once in awhile as a reminder that its not the end of the world if i dont get in (:
Hello, I am a 13 year old, living in Japan. When I graduate, I wish I could go to Juilliard. This is because music is my passion, and I believe that is what I live for. I am thinking of auditioning 2017, or 2018 for under-graduate. I have been practicing since I was 4 (violin) and I was wondering how many hours you were practicing every day. Thank you! :)
I didn't necessarily practice every day, and I only practiced 1-2 hours. And I started at age 12 haha. BUT I didn't go to Juilliard for my undergraduate studies. I went there for grad school
Drew. Thank you very much man. You're such an amzing person. You've inspired me a lot, thank you. and by the way, my dream is to get into juilliard in the next fall to be the greatest pianest ever, I realy hope to be there and to meet you as well ^_^
Hey Drew your awesome!! What do you think about Yale School or music a its viola teacher Ettore Causa (if you know him) With admiration from Colombia!!
I love music and my dream job is to be a professional musician, but sometimes I just wasn't to give up on this dream because of the immense amount of competition (I'm 14 and I've only been playing my instrument for about 3 years). I'm incredibly indecisive, so I don't know if I should work extremely hard and go after my dream, or if I should just do something else. I worry way too much about the future. I'm afraid that I'll be a failure and that I won't know what else to do. I get so motivated and I want to do better, but once I see how much I need to improve, I just want to give up.
You're only 14 homie. A lot can happen in with a few years of hard work. Don't be concerned with the destination--just enjoy the journey. Besides, just cuz there are amazing players out there doesn't mean you can't be successful! There's enough success to go around
Hey! I was wondering if you could make a video about how to live as a musician. What oppurtunities do you have, and how can you make money but still doing what you love!
Hey TVK, I want to ask a very important question. How exactly were you able to pay for Juilliard? I think you should make a video about it sharing some tips on the financial cost of music schools because education is so expensive.
Hi! I am an aspiring musician, and I am currently looking for music schools (I'm going into junior year of high school). What made you decide to go to Juilliard instead of another music school/conservatory such as Curtis, Indiana U, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman, etc.? Also, what would you recommend that I do now that will help prepare me for conservatory auditions and life at a music school? Thank you so much!
The teachers and the studio culture were the biggest factors that inspired me to choose Juilliard. I also didn't think I was good enough to get into Curtis, so I didn't even bother auditioning haha. Maybe, get into the habit of creating a daily practice log and plan out your practice every day so you can become more goal-oriented with your practice!
Julliard is definitely my dream. Not only because i want to be a part of it, but i seriously want to pursue music (piano) and i feel julliard is the perfect place for that. Everyone wants to get a degree from a good school. So yeah. Also, i am from India, not that it would make a difference (i think 😉). Your videos help a lot ☺. Please keep giving your advices!!!!
Awesome channel man! Now for the dreaded question! Lol - Now that you're a graduate could you please do a video talking about life after music college and how you support yourself financially and stuff - if that's not too personal :P - (oh and maybe how you stayed afloat whilst in college)- just cause freelancing is often quite unpredictable and not always reliable so I was wondering what your experience with that was :D I have plenty more questions hahaha looking forward to more vids!
Hi Drew :D, I'm a Freshman in Highschool and have always wanted to do something with music in life. I've recently got into a play in my school and have been playing guitar for my whole life. Do you know anything about Jazz Guitar in Juilliard? I've found your videos very helpful :D.
Juilliard is only the only school that I know of that has a drama and music department. If anyone knows of a better alternative then please tell me but I don’t know any other schools
Eyy! AskTVK, I've been playing for about 2 years and I want to ask you this: Do you know have good books on music history, or books about composition? I have Paul Hindemith's books and they are extremely useful, but I am wondering if there are any more good ones. I'm doing my ARCT in performance in 21 days and I need to finish History 2 after. This would help a lot!🐷 Give hugs, get hugs. :D
Thanks Drew, great video. I have a question though. I know that I want to keep playing Viola possibly professionally, but I have passion for math and science also. I hoping for my career to be in the STEM field, so is there any way for me to keep continuing music(performing, etc.), but have a completely different career? This question has been in my thoughts cause I'm entering junior year of high school, so I know I have to start making some sort of career choices right now.
I would say that you should decide upon what makes you most happy. If you're more passionate about math and science, you should pursue that! You can always join a community orchestra and practice in your own time if you really want to.
I do applications this December and my list is Oberlin, Eastman, New England, Cleveland, Juilliard, San Francisco and Peabody. where have you applied from this list?
Hey Drew my name is Victoria I'm a junior in high school and I have always dreamed about attending the Juilliard school for classical piano performance since I was eight! And it is not because of the name or the acceptance rate but it is about the fact that when I went and visited Juilliard last week, I knew in my heart that I knew it was the right school for me because I have a passion for music and that is all I want to do in life! I was just wondering if you would be so kind and reply and I have a question: what is the live audition like and do the judges actually tell you what pieces to play or do you decide considering they have limited time. Thank you so much.
I'm not sure what I want anymore. I have always been into music ever since I have been able to hear. I also want to be in the medical field because of my medical issues. I honestly don't think I will be a musician when I'm older. sad. anyways, ily Tvk
+ThatViolaKid I hope so! Anyways it's a long ways away so I have a lot of time to decide! Even if I do go into the medical field, I would continue to play in my free time.
New York University. NYU is a brilliant school, you can really major almost anything there. In one building you’ll meet musicians and in the next you could meet people who’s studying to be a doctor.
Omg, so true. I want to go to Julliard because I want to be surrounded by people who also devote their lives and soul to music but you're right... you don't NEED to go to Juilliard to be the best hmm welp. I'm so exited to be a musician, doing what I love and what is the most fun for me as a "real job" heh
Hey! I'm 14 and I've been playing violin for almost 10 years old. My dream is absolutely go to Juilliard!! I study really hard to become one of the best and I my teachers are proud if me but I am always a little scared because I've heard that the life there is really hard and I'm afraid that I'm not good enough to be accepted in there! What do you think that I should do?
ThatViolaKid hey there! I'm sure you've explained this in another video but what why did you shoot for Juilliard as an applicant? Aside from the teachers, what was it that sparked that idea in your head to want to go there?
the nyc It was honestly just a YOLO audition. I didn't really think I'd make it! I just heard it was the best and was inspired by my teacher who was an alumna
+Quinn McGillis That's just the general buzz. And for me , personally, I like to have a calm teacher. I hear the Jo is really energetic and loud. It would be overwhelming at best
this guy speaks so concisely and precisely without a single mistake. the editing was also good.
Juilliard is my dream, but not because of the name recognition (although that is a plus). I want to go to Juilliard because it has some of the best faculty in the country, some of the most exciting programs opportunities for young composers like me, and because Lincoln center is a musician's paradise.
This are all wonderful reasons--you're completely right about all of those statements!

Awww thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much Drew! This was a great video and very eye opening as usual.
Thanks for watching, Madison!! =D
I want to get into juilliard to be the best composer and musician I can be
That's an amazing goal man! Go for it!
Thanks
Berklee is my dream school! So I just applied the principles you stated to wanting to go to Berklee 🎶
Awww yayyyy!

This is a wonderful video, and what you're talking about is a concept that not many understand.
Thank you so much you so much!!!
You are so right in all the things you point out. Spot on! Love the way you present it all! AMEEEENNN!!
Thank you Astrid!!! Hugs back!!!!
Thank you so much for the video!!! You really opened my eyes that Juilliard isn't the only school and that my biggest dreAm is to become the best musician and share music to the world!!! I'm from Germany, which city do you mean? :)
Mediha Inan Saarbrücken :)

Thank you for this! It made me realize how much I slack off and now I am trying to remember to practice everyday!
I'm so happy to hear that!
Thanks Drew, this really cheers me up and helps me. I just went through my first break-up (he was a violist like me) and I'm trying to get my mind off it. hugs!!!
+Elisabeth Komprs Awww I'm so sorry to hear that!! Well, I'm happy to help in the healing process! Just know that every day gets easier!!

ThatViolaKid Does that still apply to the composition industry?
I'm not sure! Juilliard never hurts! The name alone isn't gonna cut it though! That's what I was getting at
+ThatViolaKid Ok i get what you're saying. Thanks man!
This video was tough to swallow,I wanted to go to The Juilliard School since I was 6.It was just befitting to me because my mentor(May he rest in love and music) attended there and that's all I ever wanted to accomplish. Now I just want to pull out my weave lol
I know it was tough, but nothing worthwhile is easy! Keep at it!!!
I play the trumpet and piano, and some people told me that I will not afford to attend Juilliard just because I don't come from a rich family and have been told I am not a life time experienced musician, I've been playing for 5 years only. Hello,
I am a 13 year old, living in Japan. When I graduate, I wish I could go to Juilliard. This is because music is my passion, and I believe that is what I live for. I am thinking of auditioning 2017, or 2018 for under-graduate. I have been practicing since I was 4 (violin) and I was wondering how many hours you were practicing every day.

I didn't necessarily practice every day, and I only practiced 1-2 hours. And I started at age 12 haha. BUT I didn't go to Juilliard for my undergraduate studies. I went there for grad school
Well I really need to take a tour in Juilliard to see if it really fits my spot, even though it has a really high reputation
Definitely! Tours are amazing to capture the atmosphere!
+ThatViolaKid can you give some other tips on choosing RIGHT music school beside taking tour?
Zavid Lan Choose a school based on the teacher. See if you can get a trial lesson
+ThatViolaKid cool, thanks!
Drew. Thank you very much man. You're such an amzing person. You've inspired me a lot, thank you. and by the way, my dream is to get into juilliard in the next fall to be the greatest pianest ever, I realy hope to be there and to meet you as well ^_^
I'm rooting for you, Omar! Unfortunately, I've already graduated, so I won't be at Juilliard anymore -_-
it is a really good question
thanks so much.
Thank YOU for watching!!
you made me think. Thanks
Hey Drew your awesome!! What do you think about Yale School or music a its viola teacher Ettore Causa (if you know him)
With admiration from Colombia!!
I don't know him, but I'm planning on auditioning there for another Masters in a year or so!!!
*want not wasn't
You're only 14 homie. A lot can happen in with a few years of hard work. Don't be concerned with the destination--just enjoy the journey. Besides, just cuz there are amazing players out there doesn't mean you can't be successful! There's enough success to go around
+ThatViolaKid Thank you (^_^)
I'd say at least 3 hours daily is a must though. Most of all, efficient training. But still, one hour probably won't be enough.
Sam Andy you have no idea how much I can relate to this
How do you find a good conservatory near you?
Hey! I was wondering if you could make a video about how to live as a musician. What oppurtunities do you have, and how can you make money but still doing what you love!
Sure thing!
I want to go to Juilliard so I can major in the violin because it’s my passion. 😊🎻
Hey TVK, I want to ask a very important question. How exactly were you able to pay for Juilliard? I think you should make a video about it sharing some tips on the financial cost of music schools because education is so expensive.
Lots of student loans bro. There really aren't that many tips to it. That and finding online scholarships to apply for
Thanks big bro. Tough love. :)
Hi! I am an aspiring musician, and I am currently looking for music schools (I'm going into junior year of high school). You deserve more subs! You're amazing
You're so sweet!!! Thank you! We're working on it! :)
Julliard is definitely my dream. Not only because i want to be a part of it, but i seriously want to pursue music (piano) and i feel julliard is the perfect place for that. Do you know Yin&Yang (other TH-camrs that go to Juilliard) Thanks so much for making this video, really helpful. 😘🤗
I do know Yin&Yang! We've collaborated! =)
What is a middle school to get improved in pop singing?
I love Juilliard, but its opera and Strict, but I want pop music
Awesome channel man! Now for the dreaded question! I love u, thanks, though I may not be going to Juillard, I'll still sub to u:-)
Juilliard is only the only school that I know of that has a drama and music department. If anyone knows of a better alternative then please tell me but I don’t know any other schools
You're just a google search away :) There are plentyyyy of schools!!!
ThatViolaKid Do you by chance know the average practice hours of an aspiring pianist for Juilliard? (Daily)
Eyy! AskTVK, I've been playing for about 2 years and I want to ask you this: Do you know have good books on music history, or books about composition? Awesome video!
Thanks man!!!
Hey, Is it necessary to have a high school degree to get into julliard ???
Thanks Drew, great video. I have a question though. I know that I want to keep playing Viola possibly professionally, but I have passion for math and science also. I hoping for my career to be in the STEM field, so is there any way for me to keep continuing music(performing, etc.), but have a completely different career? I would say that you should decide upon what makes you most happy. If you're more passionate about math and science, you should pursue that! You can always join a community orchestra and practice in your own time if you really want to.
I do applications this December and my list is Oberlin, Eastman, New England, Cleveland, Juilliard, San Francisco and Peabody. where have you applied from this list?
Oh wow! That's INSANE. I applied to Eastman, NEC, Cleve, and Juilliard
does julliard has an age limit to apply?
I'm not sure---that would be a question for the admissions office!
Hey Drew my name is Victoria I'm a junior in high school and I have always dreamed about attending the Juilliard school for classical piano performance since I was eight! Check out my Juilliard Audition Story here on this channel! The judges do ask you what to play--don't worry about that! haha
I'm not sure what I want anymore. I have always been into music ever since I have been able to hear. I also want to be in the medical field because of my medical issues. I honestly don't think I will be a musician when I'm older. sad. anyways, ily Tvk
Awww Becca, I understand you're conflicted! I know you'll be happy with whatever you choose to do :)
+ThatViolaKid I hope so! Anyways it's a long ways away so I have a lot of time to decide! Even if I do go into the medical field, I would continue to play in my free time.
Juilliard is a good way of achieving my dream
lol "no matter what anime teaches us"
I’m a clarinet I’m never getting in that school ...
This yid is one of the best
u telling me to go Curtis?
Arthur Montoya bruh 😂😂
could you please suggest some other music schools in NY?
Mannes, Brooklyn College, Queens College, and Manhattan School of Music
Thank you very much ♡
New York University. NYU is a brilliant school, you can really major almost anything there. In one building you’ll meet musicians and in the next you could meet people who’s studying to be a doctor.
Does Julliard enrolled International students?
PAp's Music Yes they do.
Do you have an email ?
I do!!! It's thatviolakid@gmail.com
Don't let fear prevent you from trying. And being a musician at ANY school is difficult, so I wouldn't let that stop you haha :)
Yes
My dream is to be in the pit orchestra for Broadway musicals
What an amazing goal!!! =D
That sounds awesome
My dream is to go to Juilliard and then become a successful musician

You look like kid Cudi in your thumbnail.
*Says this not acknowledging the fact that he got into the Juilliard School
did you say anime?!?!?!?!
Yes he did lol
Uhhh yeahhhh
Omg...do you watch anime by any chance?????
yes juiliard is my real dream
Tbh I wouldn't wanna study at Juilliard. I looked it up. I'd rather study with just a good teacher
I went to Juilliard BECAUSE of the teachers ;) Teachers are the most important part of a music school!
+ThatViolaKid right!!
ThatViolaKid cool. I can appreciate that! Did your teacher encourage you to try Juilliard?
I'm glad it worked out for you.
I'm gonna try too!
The two thumbs down are sad they never got in
The truth shall set u free,
As a trombone player, Curtis is my dream. Though Jo Alessi is a better player tha Nitzan Haroz, Nitzan is a better teacher.
that is arguable.
+Quinn McGillis That's just the general buzz. And for me , personally, I like to have a calm teacher. I hear the Jo is really energetic and loud. It would be overwhelming at best
+William Robinson I can tell you he is. But he's is also very inspiring. For me Nitzan was great. Just not on joes level :/
Quinn McGillis
You studied with both?
+William Robinson well I had a masterclass with Nitzan and privately with Joe.
