The Roman Catholic Church in Korea

  • See in this video how Catholicism came to Korea, how faithful Catholics refused to abandon Christ - even unto death - and the shrines that honor the thousands of Korean martyrs.
“No matter how fiercely the powers of this world oppress and oppose the Church, they will never bring it down. Ever since His ascension and from the time of the Apostles to the present, the Lord Jesus has made His Church grow, even in the midst of tribulations.” - from the final exhortation of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Priest and Martyr

As a korean catholic, I also deeply apreciate to the foreign missionaries. They came far from this country(obviously they were not related to this country) and died for this people. They could have left this people and gone to their own countries, France, China. And they never abandoned their lambs.
I think I'm in catholic church because of their sacrifice.

We're all bounded by the Holy Sacrifice of Christ, brother. Greetings from a Brazilian catholic! May Andrew Kim Taegon, and all the martyrs of our bloody history rest in the love of The Father, and inspire us every day to spread our faith. May they be models! Dominus Vobiscum!

@@compuserveuser2779 I do agree with you as a Roman Catholic. John Paul II said "One Church with two Lungs", too.
The differences as really tiny indeed:
      1) A small difference in the Creed that could be overcome
      2) The authority of the pope, much harder to deal with not at the heart of the faith.
      3) Different Traditions, this is not a problem at all. It is richness.

I am a Chinese Catholic and I come from Manchuria which is the old name of Northestern China, near to Korea. My priest told me that we (Korean Catholic and our church) have quite friendly relationship in the history. In 19th (I am not very sure) the many Korean cathlolic came to our land for studying because of their financial problem or political problem. And now, Chinese Catholic church, especially in my hometown, is in very difficult situation, because of the reason that we all know, and the Korean church help us so much with brotherhood and the love in Christ. We speak not on language, but in his divine name, we two church be one.

I was inspired and motivated by the true disciples of the early church who suffered so much persecution to plant the seeds of Christianity in a foreign soil, Korea. Christ never fails or leave His faithful Korean sheep and despite the severe persecution, Christ church was build on the rocks in Korean soil. Since then the presence of Christ reign in Korea, and may more Koreans turn to Him in faith and truth. God be praise forever more in this lovely land of Korea! Despite these immense challenges, it has faced over the years, the Korean Catholic Church has managed to transform itself from a tiny marginalized secret communiy into a highly respected part of Korean society with millions of members. The martyrs, their faith, & their life correspond. They practice what they believe, therefore it is for us to follow the examples of martyrs. And that is to believe in the love of God & that the faith will be revealed in the love towards our neighbors."

it hurts to know that so many Korean Catholics were persecuted, tortured and murdered during this heavily Confucian time in Korea but I guess if these horrible things didn't happen in the past there'd be no Catholicism in Korea and that, I believe, is much worse. 🙏⛪❤

Korea was better off under Buddhism, not Catholicism and they had one King who was very wise in the mid centuries who chased the Jesuits out of their country. Constantine was a pagan and he died a pagan. Rome has been the enemy for over 2000 years. Now instead of being an Empire; they have become a CHRUCH to control the masses.

Many Catholics easily stray away from the faith that they received. What are the reasons for their falling into complacency, becoming indifferent and even hostile towards Christ and the Christian Faith?
The fault with many Catholics is that they think baptism is a graduation from having acquired knowledge and understanding of their faith. After completing their catechism classes or RCIA journey, they no longer seek out opportunities to continue growing their faith, both doctrinally and spiritually. Their only occasion to grow in faith is the one-hour Mass that they attend every Sunday. This is hardly enough to sustain the life of a Catholic. Those who do not grow in their faith are already losing their faith. There is no neutrality.
How, then, can we grow in our faith? Firstly, we need to deepen our intimacy with God through Christ. In Christ, we come to know and love the Father. Secondly, we must be rooted in the Word of God. We cannot grow in our faith without deepening our love and appreciation for the Word of God through bible study and most of all, a prayerful reading and sharing of the Word of God.
Thirdly, we must seek the support of the Christian community. A Catholic without the support of his fellow Catholics will eventually fall out from the faith, especially when he undergoes the trials and challenges of life, the influence of secularism, and the materialistic, individualistic and atheistic views of the world. Fourthly, to grow our faith, we need to evangelise and be a witness to Christ. We evangelise ourselves by evangelising others. By sharing our faith with others, we strengthen our own faith. By teaching our faith to others, we grow in understanding and clarity in what we believe in.
Finally, growing in faith is to grow in our Christian life. This is the most effective form of witnessing. It means that those of us who are baptised must live a life of holiness and purity, free from sin and a bad conscience. A life of holiness and charity are the fruits of a strong spiritual life and a life of hope founded in the promises of God.
