My first official bike was a 2014 CB500F. I loved it, and it was great to learn on. It's super easy to maintain too. The upgrades over the years have made it look more attractive than ever. My '14 was a lot more basic, but that's what I liked about it. Now, my first unofficial bike was a 1992 Suzuki Katana 750. I bought it for $800 and sold it two weeks later for $600. It had everything wrong with it, but I didn't know that at the time. I didn't ever register it (which is why it's not my first official bike). I decided to save up a bit more, and buy something new since I didn't want to have a clunker if I was learning to ride. A couple years later I bought the aforementioned CB500F. I highly recommend that platform for anyone learning to ride, or even experience riders that want a low maintenance bike with excellent fuel economy.
My first road bike was a Royal Enfield Crusader 250 in 1970. Rather gives my age away a bit. Must have owned 70 motorcycles since. Biggest a 1250 Bandit , fastest a Fireblade. Been all over Europe and Africa on 500s and rarely wanted more power.. Now got one of these and it's splendid. I like it's quality, finish and how much fun it is to ride. Nice review. I love my 2023 CB500F. 18k miles in the past 7 months. I typically ride it at 90mph on a weekly 360 mile interstate ride. I'm 5'11, 225lbs. 23 years riding experience.
First bike? 1959 Mustang Pony. That was back in 1964. I currently own a 2018 CB500F and a 2020 Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle. Mustangs were built in Glendale CA and stopped production in 1963. They were probably killed by the Honda Cub 50. And yeah, I'm an old guy, 71 but have loved motorcycles since I was 12.

Started with a Suzuki 93 or 94 GSF400 Bandit - the bike before the monster that had cafe style and painted tubular frame, 4 cylinders and a 16K RPM red line. Loved it and kept it, but looking at something like this to add (dealing with 4 inline carbs gets old) - I have no interest in anything over 650cc, as the fastest I'd ever reach in my area is 80mph on rare occasion. Much more likely to be doing 35 or 40mph on backroads. BUT I'm also considering the 500X or similar adventure bike since I'm surrounded by national forests and parks. Since I haven't done a lot of riding recently (while repairing the old bike), I might go smaller for adventure like the Versys X 300. Price, availability, reliability all equally important - riding any bike really is fun to me, but love the naked or semi-naked bikes like this 500F.
This is a nice looking bike but why would you go for this over an mt07 which is 74hp and 13kg lighter. Same with the kawasakiz400...same power as this honda but a lot lighter and just as reliable as the honda.
Nice review. Yes to heated grips. Hand guards too. My first bike was a 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo. Most comfortable bike I ever owned. All day. Plush, huge seat. Perfect ergos. A shame that they didn't at least keep that body style or ergos. It would sell well in today's sport touring market. Exceedingly well. I catch myself looking in the classifieds for a good one now and then. I wouldn't hesitate. As for this new bike - I'd get the X model personally. I'm 6' and it would be roomier I'm sure. Different ergos than the F model I'm sure, but I've owned plenty of that style bike. My last one being a 2019 MT-07.
Idk if I could choose between the 3. I'm leaning towards the F, but the wind reduction farings of the R and X are tempting, as well the X's softer ride, but that bike may be a little big for me.
I really doubt that you'll be saving alot on wind reduction. One thing naked bikes got for them is that you get a spread out wind slap on your upper body, still winds up to 130kmh is fine. Where as on a bike with a windshield all the wind gets pushed up to your head, which I can imagine is way less comfortable. I have also never heard that the x has a softer ride, thought they all came with 1:1 the same suspension, just maybe slightly different angels. I'm really happy with my cbf, but every now and then I wished I took the r (just because I like the looks abit more). Take what you like the look of most, the bikes probably ride almost identical. But also go testride them.
I started riding 30 years ago on a Suzuki GS500E. Nice air cooled parallel twin. I have a Bandit 600 and a Vulcan 900 now, but I do like the Honda CB500 series. Not sure if I like the X or the F better. The X makes more sense as a do it all bike for me, but the F might fit my short inseam better!
Just got back into biking after a 5/6yr lay off. Did have a VTX1800 and a Guzzi Breva 750. Getting on a bit now (70) so wanted something a bit lighter. Bought a 2yr old CB500F from a Honda dealer. Would have preferred the newer edition but couldn't get the colour I wanted. It's a great bike, and fun. Find it a little snatchy at very low speed manoeuvres and still the same after Honda check over. Maybe it's just me but I'd like to know how the later edition fairs on this point.
@@flyingspiritus eh, I think they’d be better off with the cb500r for there a2 bike. The 650r is a 90hp+ bike that shouldn’t be restricted that far back IMO. Honestly I believe the should just bump the 650 to a 750 to put it closer into the “upper” middleweight category. 750-900cc range
@@mh-do3pe it does not! Aside from the neutral light. The power band is pretty straight forward though, you can pretty much tell what gear you are in at all times lol
I have had this bike for a year now and I have to say, it's a great bike. I love it. I think his estimate for the mileage on it was a little high. I average about 55-60mpg. Then again I'm pushing it a lot with freeway driving and I like to accelerate quickly. it maxes out at around 95 mph. So when driving 75-80 on the freeway you are not getting the best mpg the bike has to offer. It's very comfortable and handles beautifully.
I’m assuming you’re from the US as you mentioned freeways. That’s probably where the difference in mpg figures is coming from as the UK bases it’s calculations on the imperial gallon whereas the US doesn’t. UK figures for mpg always end up being a bit higher as a result so 70mpg UK is actually roughly equivalent to 58mpg US which seems to line up with your experience 👍
I've been riding my 2018 for 4 years now, after doing 2 years A1 (125cc). And I really have a hard time wanting more If Honda dropps the new 500's with a 270 crank, you better bet I'm trading my f for an r. But the new 750 is also quite compelling.

it looks so ugly from the side and the front mask too.. the engine is too weak, you cant ride 160 without a screaming engine on its limit. anything under 650cc is bs.

Nice upgrades but that headlight and exhaust are stuck in 1995. Bring an R version and you’d have something I think. For now, the Z400 and Ninja 400 eat this thing for lunch by making the same power for a grand or two less $. Beginners do not care about USD forks. Just cuz it has two brake rotors does not mean better braking than one large one like the Kawi’s have. You missed Honda.
I'm 40 and want to get back into riding after 15 years. Will I be wanting more than the 500cc engine after the first year? I'm no speed demon but I occasionally like to feel acceleration. Whats it like to have a passenger? Thanks.

I started with my father's bike the honda cb150r. But now I'm on my Husqvarna Svartpilen. Its damn aggressive. Gives me torque and power when needed.

1st bike was a 2016 Yamaha Tenere 250 (Brazilian market). Nice bike but lacks power and the seat is terrible.
It's a shame Honda hasn't updated the appearance of this bike to match the other bikes in their "Standard" line up.
I do think a CB500"R" version would be cool to match the CB650R...

I am looking at either this of the MT-03 and after this review, its the Honda all the way! Great review - and I will be sure to get the heated grips!
The MT-03 uses almost as much fuel as the 07, insane.
Z400 would be a good one to compare to the 500F

Change the damn headlight Honda..it’s ugly and cheap looking. Unworthy of the Honda badge. The rest of the bike is fine for what it is.
