  • More than 1,000 former NFL players are addicted to painkillers. Many are without health insurance, or any semblance of a support system. In this VICE Sports Sitdown, NFL veteran and ESPN commentator Marcellus Wiley discusses his use of toradol and the renal failure that he suffered as a result.

Cant believe people are stupid enough to say this is Marcellus' fault. He acknowledges that he did take them and he is a grown man, but the DOCTOR prescribed them, checked his medical records every year, and never mentioned any of the side effects, knowing that Wiley also had asthma. Some people are so stupid to claim that he should have know. Nobody has the time to be an expert every field of life. Are we all supposed to check our support beams by ourselves to make sure the construction workers did a sufficient job building our house? Should I take apart my oven to make sure everything is working right and it doesn't explode the next time I turn it on?

soap bubbles i agree with what you general point is but I think maybe what the case is and what he was saying was their negligence in the sense that they actually did not check for cross indicators, as opposed to seeing them and choosing to ignore them. Obviously, both can be harmful/deadly so it may not matter much in terms of the ultimate consequences, but I do think it paints a different picture in terms of the culture

I went from calling my mother to help me out of bed at 9am, to manually changing a tire on my car 20min after I got the shot 3 hours later. It was a miracle, and I can totally understand why the players loved it. Its not euphoric and addictive like opiates, but its an insane anti-inflammatory. If you have a job to do that requires huge physical prowess and you are already in pain, its the PERFECT drug.

They took me off of earlier meds for migraine due to interaction issues. No one warned me about Toradol. I ended up on hydro morphone as a last result. Toradol eventually ate up 1/3 of my kidney tissue. Everyone got all worked up over the opiates, but it was Toradol that did the damage. I’m now off of both medications and finding relief for daily migraines through lyrica and flexor I’ll combined. Thanks for speaking up. He pretty much says coaches had all but encouraged him to smoke as opposed to going out drinking etc. Coaches more or less from his experience didnt care at all about their players smoking weed, as long as they didnt get caught. He implies that most guys are made well aware of upcoming drug tests , and as long as they figure out how to pass the test in time then smoke all you want at the end of the day when you get home.
It sounds like the way that the testing is, if you fail a test still even knowing when you will get tested then the problem is carelessness more than smoking itself.

The MDs in the NFL are not there to maintain player health or safety. They're hired by the organizations as mechanics to see if the machines are in operating condition. It's sad, but he doesn't understand why NFL teams hire the Doctors.

Sounds like the VA, to me. I had 4 accidental overdoses taking pain meds, AS PRESCRIBED. It was the other meds I was taking, mixed with the opioids, I guess. After I would get out of the civilian hospital, I'd go to the VA Clinic, tell them what happened they'd just put me on a different med, to "see how this one works out". I finally quit most everything(except B/P and insulin), on my own. Nasty withdrawals, "redecorated" the house a couple of times. Sorry I got off track, but I've always looked at NFL players as heroes. Looks like I've found a new one. Thank you for your effort in what you do.🏈🤜🤛
