What Trogly and others don’t realize is that the map on it, when interpreted correctly, will lead you directly to the location of the one ‘58 Moderne that was ever made.
Hey, I watched “The Goonies.” I know a treasure map when I see it!

Finding an one of the original Moderne would be pretty awesome, if there is one!

The two strap buttons represent the old style dock cleats to tie off the ships in port. The two cleats were for large ships, for small boats they use the tee cleats. 😁

@@TheJeffbarrett I can completely relate to this post, but I can go one layer deeper… I started playing just after middle school, as I was entering high school. Met my best friend in high school. He’d already been playing for years. Here’s where the relevance comes in. I am a HUGE fan of Fender instruments while my best friend was just in love with Gibson Les Pauls (specifically he wanted a Les Paul Custom in white with gold hardware), and coincidentally he just happened to share a birthday with one Lester Polsfuss aka LES PAUL, while I share a birthday with LEO FENDER!! That’s some next level Providence from the universe showing that we were either meant to be best friends, or possibly rivals, or maybe both. Unfortunately, lost my non-blood related brother 12 years ago on an Easter Sunday. Now my absolute least favorite day of the year :(

    Greetings Austin!
This is a very interesting special edition Les Paul guitar. Black Mother of Pearl would have been a nice touch on the headstock, but the way it was done fits more closely with the nautical map theme.
Just as Carmen Rago has indicated, the use of paired strap buttons connects to the nautical theme of the guitar, and represents where rope lines would be lashed, usually in a figure-eight fashion.
It is pretty awesome how it looks, I would likely be reluctant to play it much though, since it has already been distressed, however, the wear and tear of use might be difficult to tell from the way it appears when it left the factory.
Thank you for posting these videos!
Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️🙂

Buy far the best Art style guitar I’ve seen from Gibson, tastefully done and has continuity from body to head stock, the only thing I would have changed would be the fretboard I’d have gone for an oak board to further emphasise the ship’s timber vibe.

Honestly, the darker Kraken Les Paul I’d take over the brighter one. The map has more mystery to it, and it has this vibe like it belongs on a cursed pirate ship. Plus, the subdued look on the Kraken design is wicked. It’d also give me reason to go up to people while playing it and say “do you fear death, Jack Sparrow?”

Hand painted logo is the neatest thing about this guitar... could've had a respected Tattoo Artist do the artwork and could've/should've used some oak from old rum barrels. Really messed up by not using a spalted maple top!!! I've talked openly about this and Ish Guitars did something close (but not really) They had a PRS with spalted maple/red resin top. I really feel a spalted maple top with blue resin filled voids and a very light caramel stain with light/hazy burst around the perimeter (yeah a burst more similar to the 2nd kraken you just showed) and some inlays on the body like creatures and a compass rows, and some oxidized copper/brass hardware to finish off the nautical vibe (maybe even attach brass rings instead of strap buttons and make a custom rope strap with a shoulder pad made from old waxed canvas marine tarp or sail cloth). The only problem is I have several other ideas for custom projects and only so much money haha so maybe some old aquaholic may take my idea and run with it. On the off chance someone decides to build something like this then I'd love to be a part of specking/designing or just get a chance to check it out. There is other accoutrements that would work well with this theme, but I can't give away all my ideas.

Most of the modern maple fingerboard Gibson's I've seen have the fingerboard raw and unfinished.

I think you are right about the double buttons being a maritime reference: they look like cleats for tying ropes to.

Double strzp button for double safety? It looks nicer than a simple strap lock.

Weird, it looks like they didn't extend the fret ends over the binding, almost like they rebound the board after deciding they didn't like cream/white (with the "nubs"). Losing that little extra bit of play area is a shame. Never really understood why they did it this way to begin with.

The strap button design is homage to the bollards on the dock that ships tie up to.
