Last week I ordered a new Gibson Les Paul Slash Standard in November Burst, I’m not a slash fanboy but I was when I was a kid, plus I got a killer deal on it. I remember playing my first Gibson Les Paul Standard at guitar center in 2008 and dreaming of owning one but thinking I’d never be able to afford it. Tomorrow that dream shows up and 13 year old me from 2008 would be so proud. So I’m sure I’ll have the same reaction when I open that case for the first time! Congrats on a beautiful guitar!!

I literally bought the same guitar in '20, LP Standard 60s Bourbon burst that was only 5 months old and used so I saved quite a bit of money too. It was totally mint with all the plastic still on it. I don't like the kidney Grovers either so I switched them out for locking gold Gotohs with keystone tips, Gohtoh bridge and tailpeice too. Swapped out the pups for Duncan Pearly Gates and I defy anyone to show me a better playing or sounding guitar.

I put Pearly Gates on my ‘08 and it smokes. I think when Gibson nails it, they really nail it.

I too have a 60s Standard Bourbon burst...but mine is lefthanded. Just like you did, I am about to put on locking tuners. But other than that, it is the perfect guitar in my opinion. I don't have tuning issues with this one like I did with a late 90s LP I used to have and the Tribute I also have right now. Though, I put a String Butler on my Tribute and that pretty much fixed the issue I was having.
...Imo, if Gibson put PRS style headstocks (3 on a side with teh strings going straight to pegs with no angle) on their LPs, they would have the ultimate, perfect and unbeatable guitar..

For some reason I actually really like the lower frets of the LP's. Also combined with the scale length it makes it such a unique feeling guitar imo. Always cool to see you exploring a new guitar Kyle!

Congrats dude! I’ve got 5 LP’s. 2 customs (20, and 22) a 16’ R8, 22 R7 Murphy lab, and an 04’ Classic. I’ve had about half a dozen others over the years but I think the stable is solid where it is now. Also, to be fair…it’s always been in style to hate on Gibson lol

Les Pauls have a mahogany neck. Pretty much everything else has a maple neck. Mahogany necks have a lower resonant frequency and give a “warmer” tone. Tap the headstocks of both and you’ll hear the difference. Maple necks have a different decay and more sustain as well.

I just got my first Gibson Les Paul standard 50’s gold top last week. I am like you man, grew up beyond poor and started playing in 1997 when I was 11 and have worked my hind end off to get to where I am now. I understand the feeling being able to get your hands on things that only felt like a dream when you were younger. Congratulations man!
I actually just switched over to Gibson altogether, I’ve played Martin and Gretsch for years but now own a vintage Gibson jumbo and then sold my Gretsch Broadkaster and bought the 50’s Gold Top standard.

I bought a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's model. I got a gold top. Im not sure if a flame top is "me" or not.. so i got the gold and i really like it. Gibsons are sick. I grew up a huge blink 182 fan and had a Tom Delonge strat... still do. But i gravitated towards fenders for the longest time and really like the shape and feel of the strat. Now that im older I have the gold top and a SG standard. The SG is sick just because its so light and resonant. Recently got some rare epiphones and theyre sick too!

Norlin era Les Paul customs are amazing when its a good example . Some of the 70s Standards are great too . Some are put off by the 3 piece Plain Maple tops 3 piece Maple necks from 1975 to 1982 and the Sandwitch body construction which makes them extra heavy in some cases .
The Maple necks does give them a different feel and sounnd but its a good sound . Many Maple neck customs and standards but especially Maple neck customs are great for heavy overdrive/ distortion . They have an open and clear crunch with a tight low end . Many comlpain of 70s Les pauls being muddy or dull but in many cases its because the pots have really low values . Gibson were using 300 k pots for tone and volume and they had a wide tolerance Range so thue might only be 230k. They were also using 150k pots for Awhile and some ot those read as low as 100k..
Some 70s Gibsons i have heard were very bright clear and snappy while others were muffled muddy and ridiculously bass heavy.

    I’ve played a 20 yr old Sg (got new back in early/mid 2000’s, for a gift/1st brand name guitar, got very lucky. Has 60. Neck 490r/498t, the grain of wood and feel and sound is great! Love it). ;
But seeing ive always loved LP’s & 20 yrs wirh my orginal axe, saw gibson went back to old school for new (2023 standards), i went for the 60s model burst, it looks great, feels good but different around heel lol), Big question is due to having spent a pretty $ on this brand new 60’s LP standard burst…im familar with 61 (or sny burstbuckers), i assumed the 490/498t was a very close model to the classic rock PAF

Beautiful top for a Gibson USA guitar. I’ve always been a Fender player most of my life and got hooked on Gibsons about a year ago. I went with a 50s standard. Very good guitar, but I did change the tuners. One kept intermittently slipping. Try the Kluson Revolution locking tuners if you like that look better. They are much better than the stock tuners.
But congrats. My next Gibson is going to be a Custom Shop 61 SG VOS… it’ll also be my first ever custom shop guitar. Wish me luck in my hunt!

The Columbus, OH Sam Ash had an Ice Tea Burst and an Unburst in stock. Originally, I thought I wanted an Ice Tea Burst but seeing them in person side-by-side I fell in love with the Unburst finish. More importantly, the Unburst had a better top that looked great for a variety of angles. So, I bought the Unburst in October 2021 and it is a phenomenal guitar! Naturally, it was not stock very long! I hated the silver-topped knobs so I replaced them with Amber top hat knobs. The pickups didn't sound good to me so I bought a set of Jalen custom double cream humbuckers from a friend. Now it looks even better and plays like a dream!

I think the thing about Gibson is that it kinda feels like supercars. Hear me out... A Civic will take you from point A to point B the same way a Ferrari would (and it would probably even be more comfortable). Ferraris are not made to be an everyday car. They're not practical vehicles, they aren't the most comfortable things ever and they're expensive as hell! They're not the easiest cars to drive, they constantly fight you back and you have to tame them in order to extract their full potential. The point is: they're made to be awesome, not to be the best bang for your buck.
Gibsons do the same job. They're absolutely stuning, unique guitars that were played by every single one of your guitars heroes, and that's why you'd love them - because they are a force to be reckoned with, not because they're trying to offer you the most modern set of features for an affordable price. And, I mean, I get it, if you got a faulty Ferrari you'd be pissed, but that's what customer service is about.
My point is, they're absolutely not for everyone, but they definitely do have a place.
PS: same goes for tube amps.

I did not like LPs for years. Then about 3 months ago I walked into GC and they had a silver burst epiphone LP custom. And I had to try it because silver burst looks so good. And the neck on that guitar felt so nice. And I kinda got it. So now I'm thinking about one and swapping in a set of pick ups I really like and enjoying it. Or even just a prophecy model with the fishmans.

I wasn't interested in les paul models until recently : I acquired a second hand Gold Glory model from Epiphone (Jared James Nichols P90), it sounds nice for this range of price, there's a certain resonance and "roots" feel. And I admit that I may get one Gibson Les Paul one day, but I it's complicated to choose which model between : traditional, standard and classic .. p90 or humbucker with or without cover ? If you can make a video for noobs on Les Paul it would be cool.

Ur tone sounds way more punchy with the light strings. Heavy strings notoriously sound more round and dull dimebag is a great example he used 9 to 46 for his d standard tuning tuned to 425hz or so which is even slightly lower than normal. Not to mention dean guitars the usa models are 24.6 inch scale lengths rather than a standard 24.75 I believe zelinsky wanted to get that feel of the original 50s gibsons which had slightly shorter than 24.75 scale lengths which gibson had some sort of manufacturing error at the time which is what resulted in the shorter scale length, miniscule difference but definitely one nonetheless, really great for those big stretch licks dime would play, my usa dean mls I have are said slightly shorter scale and they play like an absolute dream.

As a multiple Les Paul style owner including Gibson…it isn’t necessarily the “Les Paul” that people hate on, but the brand Gibson. They’re a money hungry company, and it shows in the quality of them. I can’t tell you how many Gibson horror stories I’ve heard both at the entry and custom shop range.
I find other brands make that same Les Paul shape, but at a much higher quality.
Paul Reed Smith’s McCarty single cut, or Heritage guitars H-150… or even the Chinese made Eastman guitars are so much higher quality and better playing than most Gibsons under $6,000.
I just bought an Eastman T486 and honestly I’m trying so hard to find something bad about it, other than the fact it was made in Beijing China (Handmade mind you) it’s a ES335 replica and it plays so much better than any Gibson or Gretsch within an even comparable price range.
You pay for the brand going with Gibson, not the quality necessarily.

I've always got more bang for my buck elsewhere than Gibson.
I have an FGN Expert Flame I got for $750 all in, but they aren't under $1000 new - mine was heavily gigged and came with cliplocks, rashed af, and loads of oxidation/corrosion and it still should have gone for at least $1250. Sometimes the right person can tell when a guitar they loved is going to get a good home is the only thing I can figure...because I love it. FGN does make a direct LP clone under the History brand (ESP makes a couple tiers of clones, up to $10k+ instruments) but there are Gibson and Heritage genuine LPs available so why not go for something that's closer to Knaggs or Huber in a single cut build if it's there? Even after it's been through the wringer this FGN still plays like buttered butter - the main difference is it's got the typical FGN two knob control scheme instead of the 4 knobber like a proper LP.
People are really going off on the new PRS SE line - I don't speak of PRS, I don't buy them, they're off the table for me. Personal decision - TLDR, they changed suppliers from WMIC to CorTek, I don't buy Cort/CorTek or from those who use them, I vote with my wallet. /digression

You can adjust the tension of the strings by tightening the tail piece screws. But use a quarter, not a screwdriver. And don’t make the tension too high or over time the bridge might collapse. But basically this allows you to use lighter strings in lower tunings. Also use the tone knobs. The best way to get a good sound is sink the neck pickup to the edge or even just below. Raise the pole pieces a couple turns. Then set your amp to the neck and use tone knob on bridge. Then guitar will sound good in all selector positions.

In addition, If your Korean Epi LP still has stock pickups and you always wanted an out of phase sound option, I’ll let you in on a happy secret coincidence. Again, first make sure your pickups are stock Koreans, and then get a Seymour Duncan and replace your bridge pickup. Your LP is now out of phase in the middle position. Enjoy!

I've had a few new Les Pauls cross my fingers in the last couple of years. The frets are shorter... no doubt. I had LPs in the late 90s and mid-2000s that had normal sized frets. The recent ones are nearly fretless. I sent back a Les Paul about a year ago because it had practically no frets on it. I thought damn, as heavy as my hands are, this guitar will last me 2 years. LOL? I think its because they PLEK all the guitars now. The PLEK machine will remove fret material until it is perfect... meaning it will grind off all the frets to be in line with the worst one. I wonder if the fret install is so poor, the PLEK ends up taking off over half the height just to get it right. I don't dig it at all.

While almost every high end guitar manufacturer uses synthetic versions at some point, you are certainly getting real MOP when you buy a Custom. As far a pcb electronics, only certain years and models have them. Some may say they are better, but regardless Gibson have gone back to their original, handwired harness formula. I will say their prices though have gone up, so owning a newer, high end model is not for the budget minded guitarist. Plenty of deals on the used market. But regardless, a Custom will cost you.

The thing about Gibsons is that they are unique.. they all sound different, so its tricky for ppl that are used to superstrats with high output pickups to find a nice tone for metal because Gibsons have that growl and bite that is perfect with low/mid gain amps like Marshalls..if you dial in too much gain it gets muddy and you lose definition... if you listen to guys like Zakk and Sykes they don't really dial in a lot of gain, their tones are really mid gain but they track multiple guitars to have that huge wall of sound.

    • @aureliusandthespiral

True. But, an eq pedal or a different bridge pu make it easier to personally standardize a 'tone'.

And Sykes’ best tone was in Whitesnake 87 with a Boogie.
Also this guitar thickness argument is complete BS like most things the guitar community regurgitates

@@plugnplaybaby have you ever played a JCM800? The amp is not gainy AT ALL. that's why he kicks in the SD-1 with the drive at 2 o clock, it does not give him a heavy metal tone, it gives his tone more body... just listen to the isolate tracks of no more tears on youtube and tell me if that is high gain.. In regards of Sykes, he tracks multiple guitars, always has.. he even had issues with producers in the Whitesnake's 87 album because of that.. there's multiple videos about that on youtube, don't be lazy and look it up.

I see absolutely no reason to buy Gibson. Over the years I've seen everything from "how did this leave the factory" to "man, that is awesome" and that's just not what I want to see on a guitar that sells for 2000+ euros in my country. The guitar you got slots right in between the two extremes and honestly if it needs a full setup, replacement nut, tuner and bridge pickup change - I'd just send that back and buy something that is better out of the box.
In 2017 I was shopping for a high end LP style guitar and was severely disappointed with what Gibsons I could get my hands on. Instead I bought used a used Heatley Tradition for about what a used Gibson Historic LP would cost over here. The Heatley is a far better guitar in both design and quality while still retaining a lot of that classic LP style singlecut look. Perfect build, capable of super low action if you want, better neck heel and headstock, Wolfetone pickups. Couldn't wish for more. I have never cared about brand names on the headstock, being US made also holds no extra value for me.
