@@thunderlord3183, did he get greedy? I am not so sure. He took his son on a flight through the sky as lightening and storm cloud and froze him in a lake of water. Presumably he needed only a sampling of his son to stabilize his own body, and left his son intact.
Thor is from a god and a human, but is not Hulk the same if his father can become any object he touches while also retaining all of the aspects of a personhood?

    • @thunderlord3183

ReligionOfSacrifice he wanted gamma energy maybe because he knows it’s his most powerful element. I don’t think he wanted to kill his son but just gain some of it just to get really powerful but banner and hulk together gave all of the gamma energy to his dad what is infinite
That’s why in the end of the fight his dad was like (TAKE IT BACK) because he’s body could not handle the power so he became week at that point it’s weird.

This is a great encapsulation of Bruce Banner's relationship with his father. David is very clearly behaving like an abusive parent, initially promising a good relationship but indeed his only goal is to leech off power from the Hulk, which is self-serving and he gives nothing back as a parent which is why I always found it a brilliant choice to make him the Absorbing Man: that character just always takes but never gives back which is how these abusive relationship often are, sadly. Eventually the child is discarded once he/she is no longer willing to go along or stands up for him/herself because then it is no longer seen as docile or somehow useful in the eyes of the abusive parent . This is why he frames things in transactional terms ("I gave you life, now you MUST give it back to me"), as if he and Bruce made a contract and that it'd be perfectly normal for Bruce to just give David what he wants and even then his greed comes out ("...only a million times more radiant, more POWERFUL..."). Knowing that this version of the character is the Absorbing Man, one might initially mistake him hugging Bruce for a genuine moment of affection but there's also the possibility that he was just trying to see if he could absorb his son's powers....He's also deliberately trying to get him mad. As parents should love their children and support them, it is clear that David is not capable of these feelings which is why he is pretty clear that he does not view Bruce as his son but rather the Hulk because that's what he ultimately cares more about: power. So when he starts yelling "STOP WHAT?" you get the sense that he has always been this same kind of asshole.

The ending is also great because Hulk doesn't beat his enemy physically. When his dad is full-on Absorbing Man and leeching from him, Hulk directs all his pain and anger into it...and his dad starts absorbing it...but can't withstand it.
Despite being the one that inflicted all that abuse onto Bruce, he's not strong enough to endure it himself. Bruce survived it...but his abuser can't. David destroys himself through his own actions and because of his own weakness as compared to the son who he berated for being weak.

    • @thecowboy9698
      @thecowboy9698 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think at one time, at the beginning of the film, David was a loving husband and father, as is evident by how warmly his wife speaks to him, and his interactions with young Bruce are, as well as his trying to find a cure for whatever it was he inadvertently passed on the latter.
Ross not only kicking David off the project he was working on, but also knocking over his microscope and smashing those viles next to it, no doubt which contained whatever cure David was working on for his son, drove David into a rage fueled by despair over not being able to cure his son now, I think David thought the only way in that moment to spare his son the pain and suffering his condition would cause him was to kill him, as David said about the event later on to Betty: "I knew I was doing a father's work, fulfilling a father's mercy."
And when it resulted in the death of his wife, I believe that was the final thing that pushed him over the edge and into insanity, which only progressed as time went on.
I believe that when he first witnessed the Hulk, he was deeply grieved over not only what happened to his son, but also deep guilt knowing he was inadvertently responsible for it. But that soon gave way to obsession, over his son's power, which turned to greed, and afterward nothing and nobody else mattered, except acquiring what he was after.
I think David's character arch is the downfall of a good man, a man who was a decent man at one time, but because he let his passion control him, it lead to him destroying both his life but also his family.

Ang Lee gave us instead a very Adult and serious-minded view of what this man's life and journey would really be like. The comic book version is fun and compelling, but this film goes to such a dark and Real place in human experience. It's not a film for children -as it does go to dark places dealing w/child abuse, spousal abuse and a mentally unbalanced father displaying symptoms of alcoholism.

To understand David's motives, you need to know some of his past too. David's fear of his own son becoming a monster was based on bruce's lack of emotions and his experiences with his own abusive father, whom he regarded as a monster. He even vowed not to bring another banner into the world, that makes easier to understand why he thinks the hulk is his true son.

A small touch I like with this scene is when David says "Think of all the harm they've done!! To you! To ME!!!"
That increase in rage as he's reflecting on their crimes towards him as opposed to the softer rage he demonstrates when trying to appeal to Bruce shows that, in the grand scheme of things, he's more bitter at how they've personally slighted him than he could ever be about Bruce or anyone else.
It really shows this man is a sociopath that only wants a "good" relationship with his son to suit his own plans and would be more than happy to kill him if he didn't need him.

@cobbalainen Agreed. I find it unfair when folks compare this to the 2008 version basing it solely on visual effects. What Ang Lee made was a complicated drama that explored the psychosis of the Hulk by examining his inner daemons and repressed memories. What did Louis Letterie do? Make one Hulk fight another and that's the whole story?

I personally think this movie is better than the amazing hulk in 2008. Im not saying that hulk in 2008 was bad, it was amazing but... This movie shows the true nature of hulk, he is invincible(well almost) but still, he has a heart and he can calm himself when nobody attacks him. But in the 2008 movie, all we see of hulk is that hes just a killing machine! But Hulk isn't a killing machine, he only defends himself, thats all. Thats what I loved from the Hulk from 2003 XD

For a small second when David seems to try to console Bruce, when you consider he's in tears after seeing his son transform into the Hulk for the first time, it seems that perhaps for a split second David is actually being sincere.
David even admitted to Betty that he did try to cure his son, but her father put a stop to it, so I think it is reasonable to assume that David, before he became obsessed with his son's power, actually did love his son at one time, same as he loved his wife.

I think it’s kinda cool when the antagonist and protagonist have a conversation instead of a fight after they discover the truth about each other because they have to learn more about each other and have a reason to try a rip each other ‘s heads off. At least the hero has to give the villain a last chance before the final battle. Marvel doesn’t often do that anymore they just learn about the villain and fight with no discussion about how the villain can change.
