She is very endearing. Seemed a bit shy or awkward and seems like a bit of a tough interview considering she is essentially just someone that wants to make electronic music cheaply and minimalist. She simply does her thing , has her niche market, and is looking to keep doing what she loves. I certainly wish her the best. I ALWAYS enjoy Red Bull Music Academy videos.

Really enjoyed this, she's nice and chilled to listen to and it's inspiring how un-nerdy she is about music making. Thanks Umfang and those involved in this.

seems like a nice gal but cringed when she started talking about the roots of techno being "covered up"...the history is out there to anyone who can do a google search.
going onto talking about showcasing female-only lineups of dj's really doesnt help...sign-o-the times DJ pushing politics more than music if you ask me.

Simon Sorensen Simon Sorensen Simon Sorensen my first internet argument too sir - and I know you’re a sir because of your ignorance surrounding women in the electronic music scene (probably the wrong side of 30 too).
It’s likely we sound like clones because we said the same thing but posers is a bit of a stretch - it’s not like we’re showing off since this is all anonymous.
Politics comes into everything - grow up mate. We need more LGBTQ+ people in the scene so that younger people can be inspired to do the same. We need equality to be the norm.
Go watch Midland’s Between the Beats doc on Resident Advisor. He’s a man so you’ll probably take him seriously when he talks about his struggle of being a minority in the industry.
After that, all you need to do is replace “gay man” with another minority and maybe you’ll begin to understand the problem Emma is trying to address. Cheers.

Seriously Emily, you don't see the hipocricy in what you are saying? you really dont know me and you're simply echoing what two other people have already said - yawn: how about formulating your own opinion as individuality seems so important to ya'll. If you would take the time to read what I wrote in the above comments you'll find neither hateful language nor misogyny. I may be guilty of being a bit quick to judge (from the 90 minute chat) but nothing that compares to your speed in judging me.
All I'm saying is that the whole detroit debate is ooooold..man that shit has been covered in countless interviews/documentaries since the 90's. And regarding the all-female lineup, well thats simply my opinion that we aren't gonna make any progress if its a matter of us vs them.
Frankly if you don't see that then you've misunderstood dance music culture completely!

Techno was not invented in Detroit, U.S.A. Techno was invented by Kraftwerk, in Germany, the first "Techno" track was Trans Europe Express. The problem is that a musical category which had no name for a while, only got its name when it was re-interpreted by a few black men in the city of Detroit. Please, let's get the history right. This is nearly "contemporary" history, so it is not very hard to trace down. The music that became called Techno was invented in Germany. The composers from Detroit came after they heard Trans Europe Express, case in point is that Afrika Bandaataa (who predate most of the first Detroit Techno composers) speaks of how he was inspired by Kraftwerk.
I have revised my position on this issue. Please look at my recent post, a product of further research.

    • @Superdogg23
      @Superdogg23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Nah yo. Kraftwerk did electronic music. Hell,
they even use a coupla 4beat sounds like the modern techno, but their music
was still "electro-pop" (as they called it themselves). The difference
between Kraftwerk's music and that of Juan Atkins (in Detroit) was that Juan
didn't follow any musical structures like chorus/verse.

    • @pedropola882

@@Superdogg23 Although I am not an academic historian, nor do I know Music Theory, allow me to present my argument.
      1) Kraftwerk did not invent Electronic Music. Electronic music predates Kraftwerk by several decades.
      2) That 4 on 4 thing, I don't understand so I will not discuss.
      3) Please define "Modern Techno": is it something like close grind by Joey Beltram, or the kind of stuff that is now played by DJs: 1985, SPFDJ, and made by Nene H.? Because, if that is Modern, or contemporary Techno, Modern/Contemporary Techno has nothing to do with the Music that was made by Americans in Detroit in the early 80s, who were inspired by Kraftwerk. No matter how you cut it or slice it, it was Kraftwerk who invented and triggered the popularization of "Modern Electronica". It is important to distinguish Electronic Music from Electronica (Music). All music has been electronic since a point in time. The Beattles was Electronic Music, Simon and Garfunkel was Electronic Music. Any music that has been "electronically processed" mastered in a studio, and this is a matter for a Technology Historian, is Electronic Music. Electronica is a kind of music whose nature, sounds, and essence is electronic. Case in Point: the soundtrack of Solaris (George Clooney) is Electronica (Music) although it was played with acoustic musical instruments. Of course that it was also mastered by electronic means. That record that came out "Classics on the Moog" or something like that is Electronic Music but not Electronica. Pop Corn (the original version) is electronic but not electronica. The hot butter version MIGHT be considered the first Electronica Track in history. The basic element of Techno: the souless repetitive, metronome, psychdelic quality of such music can be first identified in the Autobahn track, but the whole track is NOT Techno, only from 8 minutes on. The first full Techno Track is Trans Europe Express which inspired George Clinton, and the Funkadelics, Afrika Bambatta, and then all the composers of (indeed a genre in itself) "Detroit Techno". Just to keep score: Autobahn is 1974, and Trans Europe Express 1977. Have in mind that as early as 1970 Kraftwerk produced a track (Ruckzuck) that got really close to the structural elements of "Techno", but that is debatable.
Now, if you wonna argue that Krafwerk was inspired by Traditional Tribal music from Africa, then you have an argument. But please, if you find any "holes" in my thesis, do elaborate.
As for my background: I started listening to Electronica before I can remember (3 or 4 years of age), Kraftwerk. I did not witness the birth of "Detroit Techno", my next phase of development was with Pop Techno (European) from the time of Pirate Radio in Europe(1989/90s), these were highly danceable tracks, with high BPMs, with Black female vocals, then Technotronic, MC Music Factory, then Proto Trance (Don't you Want me, Felix), Love you more, Sunscream, etc. Then in 1995 I became an afficcionado of Electronica. Been following it ever since.

@@Superdogg23 Kraftwerk invented Electronica (Music), and Proto-Techno (Music). The first Techno Tracks that aesthetically "are" Techno are in Waveform Transmission Volume 1, an album released by a German Record Label (Tresor, named after the historic club) in 1993. The tracks in that album are "produced" by Jeff Mills, who lived in Detroit, New York, and Chicago. ONLY on Waveform Transmission did his music become Techno. The music he produced before was a type of Electronica that should be called Break Dancing Music, because that was how you danced to that music, and why that music was produced. Jeff Mills is the inventor of Techno (a category/genre of Electronica). Kraftwerk are the inventors of Electronica, which included Proto-Techno. There are still 2 important points that require research:
      1. Was the music of Waveform Transmission an "intellectual" product of Jeff Mills or is the music on that album mainly/mostly "sampled" from what I think were Northern European musicians working in the vein of Industrial Music?
      2. Were some tracks of Industrial Music the first "true" Techno Tracks.
One thing seems clear to me: Waveform Transmission was produced while Jeff Mills was living/touring Europe (Berlin, I think). He is an American but the product he put out (stylistically the first Techno) was made for the night clubs of Northern Europe. You cannot say that Techno is a product of the city of Detroit (although that city became an epicenter of producers of Techno AFTER Mills' W.T. v1). I think that it is fair to state that Techno (as we now stylistically know it) is an European product made by an American for (then) an European audience.
If you, or someone you know is highly knowledgeable in the history of Industrial Music, please contact me. I would like to get as close to the truth as possible. This is a matter of intellectual integrity. I am not motivated by racial arguments or economic interests (I am not German or a Berliner, not am a Detroitian). I am an European and an American.
