  • This quick tutorial shows you how to taper wood arrows with minimal tools. We'll use a small block plane, a cordless drill, and sand paper. Tapered arrows are great for pushing the ballance point/front of center (FOC) forward which helps achieve good arrow flight, improves penetration, and allows the arrows to be shot from a wider variety of bows.

    Nice work Clay. Also, I like the shape of your recurve caul hanging on the wall.

    If you put a little wax on the bottom of the plane it will move very smoothly and with ease. Though it's not necessary when taking off such small amounts the difference is still noticeable.

    What kind of shaft would support 600-700 tip/insert weight off a 55# bow and 33" draw? Been playing with a calculator and doesn't seem possible but I am having a hard time believing that

    I have watched this video multiple times , I have questions on combining footing shafts and tapering to get properly spined shafts. I have footed shafts and I love the tapered shafts but when I combined it the shafts turned out way over spined. I shoot a 63 lb recurve so I was surprised. In all the videos I have seen I haven’t seen anyone combine it and show what the spine was after. I even went to 300 gr broad-heads but still over spined.

    Do you fletch the tapered end or is that the end you put the point on?

      Shane K fletch the tapered end if your trying to achieve higher FOC.

    How much does this affect the spine weight? I normally start with a shaft around 70 lbs spine and by the time I broadhead tune it it flies well out of my 60lb longbow, should I start a little heavier spine if I'm going to taper?

    hi clay been watching your videos about tuning arrows getting drove crazy as in the UK no archery stores sell arrow points above 125 grain any way to increasing arrow point manually

      I know 3 rivers sells an internal footing jig that uses a drill bit to tap out the instructions of the shaft allowing you to insert a nail or lead wire. If you knew someone with a machine shop it wouldn’t be hard to make.

    Thanks for this! I had never thought about tapering the arrow! What were the measurements you used?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tom Oldharp 6 and 9 inches but you can go longer if desired.

    Thanks Clay, you said tapering let's you shoot your arrows from a wider range of draw weight bows, how broad a range are you talking about? Also, in your case, does tapering help you get away with shooting lower spine shafts? Finally, do you think it's possible to achieve a good taper with a method that doesn't require chucking in a power drill; I only own/use a hand brace.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Drew Dittmer it's not the tapering as much as pushing the FOC up. Tapering just helps with that. With a high FOC arrow I can get good flight from my selfbows from 40 to over 55 lbs with the same arrows. I've never tried to push it beyond that.

    I thought tapering arrows meant to bring the tip to a point in order to mount broadheads or nocks?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jesse Johnson that's a taper as well but for a different purpose. This is a tail taper.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nathan Chalek most trad shooters want more weight forward and heavier heads help achieve that.

      Clay (or anyone else) can correct me if I am wrong.
      Mass x Velocity = Momentum
      Momentum is a key factor in penatration.
      Trad bows are not as good at creating massive Velocity as compounds, so we make up for it in increased mass.
      My compound bow, with 125gr heads is over 400 fps. I would be surprised if my fadtest trad bow (of the same draw weigh) is capable of much more than 1/2 that with any arrow weight.
      There are just limitations with wood and fiberglass that carbon fiber limbs and low friction cams don't have to face.

      Not sure really, it's about 2 inches long.

  • @statikpunk
    @statikpunk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always ment to try this. is there a reason you have chosen 6 and 9 inches, is it a measurement based on your arrow length? or do you use that same measurement for any arrow of any length ?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matt Donovan no particular reason. Sometimes I make the taper a little longer.
