It's really awesome people took this forgotten unknown piece of media and did an incredible restoration of it. It was released back in 2022 and the full thing is on TH-cam to watch. It's honestly really fun.

I clicked on this video thinking kinda cynically "I've seen this OVA, this is kinda over done tbh". But damn this was a fantastic video. The commentary was super on point, fun, and interesting. Fun crew to pick this stuff apart.
On another note I reccomend finding a bunch of the strange TV ads that feature Mario and doing an episode on them. So many out of character weird pieces of off brand Mario clips. I will always remember Mario saying "if you do drugs, you go to hell before you die"

Some reason this made me want to play the voiced CD-ROM version of Mario is Missing. Which was full of fun stereotyping voice overs.

Also, the this-companion-was-actually-a-prince trope has GOT to be a Japanese thing because (spoilers for Howl's Moving Castle) the SAME SHIT HAPPENS in Howl's Moving Castle. I remember when I watched that movie my girlfriend and I turned to each other when he turned back like "what the fuck??? Why??"

So I was interested in the variety show bit you mention at the end (King Koopa's Kool Kartoons). I remembered hearing something about it, particularly the guy who played Bowser/King Koopa.
So, his name was Christopher Collins, but he's best known as Chris Latta. Chris Latta was a fairly prolific voice actor in the 80s, best known for Cobra Commander and Starscream. He was also actually the first voice for Moe and Mr. Burns in season 1 of the Simpsons, had a few guest spots on TNG and DS9, and was a pretty successful stand up comic.
But he was also known for being... difficult to work with. According to Hank Azaria, who replaced him on The Simpsons, Matt Groening described Latta as having a great voice, but that he was a dick, and "just kinda jerky to everyone." Flint Dille, one of the lead writers on Transformers and GI Joe (and a bunch of mostly licensed video games) said he once had to bail Latta out of jail to make a recording session in time. Latta said it was for jaywalking, but Dille implied that it was probably for something related to Latta's drinking.
And that's kinda the source of a lot of the problems with Latta. He was fired from the King Koopa show for acting "inappropriately" with crew and audience, and his voice work dried up in the 90s. He was still working as a touring comic, but that job has a history of not being great for alcoholics...
In 1994 at the age of just 44, he passed away due to complications from encephalitis, which his alcoholism likely put him at greater risk for. While he didn't have the best rep, Dille was notably saddened, as he thought Latta was very talented and a "wild, interesting guy".
