  • A quick look at the new Turnigy 9X version 2 from Hobby King. This video looks at how the radio performs on the bench and how to bind it. The next video will show the flight test and some more details on the performance of the new FHSS module/receiver.

    16 primary frequencies to counter radio interference does sound excellent to me. I am extremely interested in that test flight review part.
    So far you've got some extremely good reviews, thanks a lot. :)

    Bruce thanks so much for the review. I've had my eye on the Turnigy for over a year but kept avoiding it due all the V1 problems. Looks like Turnigy have really cleaned things up with V2 and I feel it is good due to your technical investigation. As long as I keep up the "It's only $60." mantra I think I will like it just fine.

    Correction. The difficulty in sliding the switch is not related to the screws but the bending of the circuit board the switch is connected on. The circuit board has two long, springy metal tabs that make contact to the back half of the TX. With the shaft from the 9Xs neck strap loop removed, the circuit board will bend slightly when putting the two halves back together. My fix was a 7/8"x5/8"x1/4" piece of wood and foam cut to the same dimensions. Slide it foam side up under the circuit board.

    Difficulty in sliding the power switch can be related to the tightness of the two small screws holding it in place. Today I replaced the neck strap loop with a 3rd party one and had to remove the shaft that was holding up one side of the circuit board the power switch is connected to. As a result I really tightened the two small screws holding the other end of the circuit board. The power switch is much more difficult to slide than how it came from the manufacturer.

    This radio seems to have such potential, but FlySky does not seem to see beyond offering the cheapest solution.
    At $60 plus $11 for additional receivers this is a great option for the casual weekend flyers as is. Pending the flight tests of course.
    Upgrades to look at are a LiPo battery, A plug for firmware updates, third party firmware, at least one allows resetting the low battery warning level.
    Other receiver options would be a wonderful addition as well. Both higher end and lighter weight

    Good review! I got the Turngy 9X a month ago and I am extremey impressed to say the least. I got it for $38 dollars plus shipping from hobbyking and the backlight kit was an extra $5. Its remarkable what you can do with it. It is by far the most programmable radio ive used. Only dislikes are the reciever is too big, the batteries are hard to get in and out and that annoying beep every button you push. Otherwise A+

    Great review.
    For the rest, you are all very critical of this Radio. You must remember what you are paying for this system. If you want it all expect to pay $500+. Just enjoy this hobby and remember even the best radios cant make you an great pilot. Happy flying.

    Bruce, First I want to thank you for the clear concise videos you produce. Next, I want to replace my son's Dx5e but have lost confidence in DSM2 due to too many signal loss induced crashes. The difficulty we have in getting away from Spektrum is the fact that he already has a number of Parkzone Ultra Micro flyers.
    Here's my question. Do you consider the Dx6i to be more reliable than the Dx5e and do you know of a DSM2 module that can be used with the Turnigy 9x?

  • @GraemeRobinson
    @GraemeRobinson 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Bruce - just stumbled across this vid and your others on spectrum analysis. Thanks so much for this. I have a 9X and a DX6i so it was great to see the difference between the true frequency hopping of this radio and the older DSM technology. I have greater respect for my $60 radio now! In truth I liked it already. May get another and do the FrSky conversion if I feel the need for failsafe, though I notice there is a failsafe setting in the 9X menu - does it not work in your experience?

  • @jewfish68
    @jewfish68 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great quickie review Bruce. I'm interested in seeing how much the software has improved. My V1 software is driving me nuts - ok, ok its a $60 radio but decent software aint that hard to do. Also interested how I could fit my Assan module. On the V1 it waggles about so I had to tape it on.

    Hi Bruce, Good intro review, good points raised on the V2.. I like the rf freq hopping now, but the wired in module "option" is a total step backwards. What are they at (flysky) thinking? Propriatry only thinking..? Its an 'open systems' world now with people wanting to use existing modules out there or other brands & not even backwards compatible with their earlier v1.4 modules..

    @travellingpurdy I have this Turnigy 9x v2 Tx and it has no range issues whatsoever. I just don't know how well it goes beyond about 350m as that's as far as I've ever flown one of my plane with it.
    No glitches or anything though, rock solid signal strength, so it's not near the edge of it's range with 350m for sure! In comparison many other Tx reach 1,5km without problems, so it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if this one can do the same. I just haven't confirmed this yet myself though.

    @KaldekBoch The problem is that this radio used to have a 72mhz module in it on v1, so when they removed it the tx became unbalanced.

    @Aabish72 @RCModelReviews I too am very much looking forward to this video!
    I was wondering if it would be a wise idea to convert the antenna into an SMA connector instead. This way boosters and what not could be added very easily? Also when using a module with its own antenna it can be easily unscrewed?
    Thanks Bruce for your work. Where about in Australia are you from?

    @KaldekBoch 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bruce, do you find that the 9x feels a bit bum-heavy? I always use a neck strap and found that the position of the loop on the radio is too high, resulting in the radio requiring more effort to hold it horizontal (as compared to my DX6i anyway).

    Since this is an FHSS system I think that why they didn't put the fail safe in there because there is a lower change of getting interference and plus its 2.4 ghz so there even less change of getting interference. I'm guessing that your only getting about one glitch per radio maybe more, maybe less by 3 or 4.

    Hi. I have managed to bind 2 of the Turnigy 9 Ch. receivers with my new 9x (V2) transmitter, and can run servos on the elevator, aileron and rudder channels, but cannot get my motor to respond to throttle. Confirmed that the motor is OK...it works when using an alternate ESC/Tx/Rx from Dynam. Any suggestions?

"Anyway its a $60 radio" ..Must write that one down 100 times to remind myself.. its a $60 radio... its a $60..
