How to Start a Nonprofit Organization: A Step-by-Step Guide

- How do you start a nonprofit organization? How do you manage a nonprofit organization? Starting a nonprofit sounds like a simple task but there are many steps to get there. Starting a nonprofit is so much more than filling out paperwork, it’s about having a game plan to be a strong organization from the start. This video is reference to 501c3 nonprofit organizations, so follow these steps when starting a 501c3 nonprofit.
So, get your notebook out and get ready to take notes! In this video, learn how to start up a nonprofit organization from A to Z. In this video, I will walk through how to form a nonprofit. As I walk through this process, learn the biggest mistakes people make when starting their nonprofits.
IDEA PHASE starts at 3:01 - First we start with defining your idea. Make sure you have a fleshed out idea, and that you select a strong Board. It's also key to have a strategic plan in place along with a budget and fundraising plan.
EXECUTION PHASE starts at 12:32 - Next is the Execution phase - which means identifying the paperwork to establish and incorporate your organization.
FEDERAL AND STATE FORMS starts at 18:57 - You also need to figure out the forms that you need to get your tax-exempt status from the IRS. Learn the two forms and who’s eligible for each one. This is the process for filing for 501c3 status.
FUNDRAISING starts at 22:45 - The next phase is fundraising and the disclosures you should have in place. I also talk through the insurances you need as an organization.
INSURANCE starts at 25:55 - This involves making sure you have the right protections in place to protect your board, staff, and volunteers.
BRANDING AND COMMUNICATIONS starts at 26:48 - Next is thinking through your branding and communications and making sure you have a brand persona.
EVALUATION AND PERFORMANCE starts at 28:37 - This is about the ability you have to show your organization's impact and positive outcomes.
STAFFING AND HIRING starts at 32:02 - This section is about staffing requirements to think through what you should have in place to be prepared for staffing and hiring so you can be ready to hire when it’s time.

I have been struggling to figure out how to structure my vision and its all clear now. Instead of having my llc raise the fund to fund my nonprofit vision (which makes it very personally driven and not nonprofit and charitably driven). Just have a dba or llc for nonprofit and that funds can pay my salary since it is unrestrictive funds, then I can raised the funds for the program because it is easier to find program funding and raise funds for programs than administrative overhead.. THANK YOU!

WoW this was really helpful ! I am worried that I don’t know how to address my friend that wants to create an NPO. It’s as if all the preliminary groundwork has truly not been done. I had to refuse to be part of the board because I felt she really she did not have any idea of How she was going to make it work. She just has this idealistic idea that a NPO is where it’s at when you want to help out. I appreciate your video and all the advice you gave. Wishing you were in Texas!!!
Aryana, you really do have the right perspective! A lot of people just don’t understand what it really means to run a nonprofit. But a lot of those people learn by trial and error. She’ll figure it out eventually. Some people will never be convinced unless they experience it for themselves, so it’s best to support her from a distance. One day I’ll be able to do a cross country tour and visit 🤗

This is the best I have seen so far as it relates to starting a non-profit! Easy to fall and understand. I am a retired HR professional and I understand the needs when on boarding. I am developing a board right now and will only work with contracted folks. My system will a bit different and this is a start up in the state of Ohio. I need to identify potential funders or a way to fund raise...I do not have the up front cash if it runs over a couple thousand...which I'm sure it will lol...I plan to watch this a couple more times for the depth of info you speak to in this video...really open my eyes and I love the detail presentation and format...thank you!
