Before I started the hobby of painting minis a few months ago, I made a rule not to buy a new one unless i have finish painting everything. I made it as a reward for buying more. This makes me strive to finish most of it. Same rule with video games, I will not buy new game unless a beat the game. It is painful and ichy sometimes to pull the buy trigger but you will get use to it.
Companies are starting to catch on in a big way, too. GW, of course, but also big players like Nintendo with their completely artificially limited-time Mario releases, etc. It's gonna be a messy new era for us miniature hobbyists to navigate. But hey, like Dana noticed here, being cognizant of it is a good first step.
Doesn't help when some of the more interesting sculpts are LE, which was the case with the Repentia Superior's backpack, and a few of the basic Sisters.
It’s not usually FOMO as in “I need to get this because it’s limited edition.” But FOMO as in “I want this in the future, and I don’t get this now, it’s going cost twice as much.”
I'm starting to go in the direction "If I can't buy it from the company selling it, that doesn't feel like it should be my problem". When a game sells out in the first hour of preorders, I start thinking I should just get a 3D printer and be done with it.
in 2019 while saving to buy a house, i spent all my free time painting and not buying miniatures(or anything really) I was able to knock out over 700 minis in a year. Now I think im at about 100 unpainted minis which eases some of the burden of knowing i had a huge backlog. Enjoy your pile of opportunity.
Always love seeing these "Pile of Shame" videos. Because it lets me see what other projects are out there and what cool combinations the years has gifted ya with. And it both makes me realize I am not SOOO bad with my own pile, but also spurns me to better organize and determine my own projects. Sharing hobby projects is easily my favorite aspect of the hobby for me, I love seeing what inspires others and seeing where they could go with it. I look forward to many of these super cool projects and this fascinating way to dwindle the painting pile! :D
I'm not all the way through the vid yet but this is already feeling far too familiar for my liking... Why do we buy so much STUFF?! edit! Excellent choice on the Hexmark and the Chaplain... I did the same thing. Although my Hexmark is painted, technically... just in a scheme that I don't actually like any more!
@@Kirioth I think you need a special shelf for your stuff. On that is in the background of your videos, so that you can see what you have. "I bought this set when I had too much money and too little self control" Pretty much explains my entire pile of shame. I'm glad you didn't make the same mistake as I did and total up the cost of it all. It was quite depressing!
That "oh right, I almost forgot" was way too real 😭 counting up the unpainted loose Miniatures and thinking that's not so bad while ignoring my boardgame shelf is why probably why my pile keeps on growing lol
It was the Canadian “sorry guys” that got me, WOAH the legion collection came out of nowhere for me tbh. So many models, so many paint schemes, so many art styles
I know what ya mean Dana. I started 3 space marine chapters during the nurgle plague plus 2 new bolt action armies. My deathwatch are mostly painted, but I'm struggling to finish my fleshtearers and brazen claws. Plus I have 72 us infantry to paint and 48 Germans for a d-day project I have been working on for a year. I got the board built and finished just not the models finished so far. I also have a lot of necrons to paint. I even painted a deathguard army and sold it during the last year. I probably have about 700 unpainted models right now between bolt action, 40k, Lotro and Marvel Crisis Protocol. My Star Wars Legion are all painted. I also bought 2 pelennor fields starters I have been trying to get through. Still got 49 orcs to go and 10 rohan riders.
I actually solved my pile of shame issues by just getting into 3d printing. Now *I'm not getting anything that's just a copy of an official model* but rather completely different models that work as proxies in friendly games. Like for example actually good looking seraphon models...seriously come on GW,most of that range is about as old as I am. I realized that the reason why I was buying so many kits wasn't about really wanting to do several big projects at different times,it was more about just having the *option* to work on different things. So now that I have the option to just print out anything from kitbashing bits such as helmets to full on models I just don't have the need to buy kits that I wouldn't even work on for months. Basically since I don't *always* need to buy new models when I think I want to start a new project I managed to just work through my backlog to the point where everything that I still need to work on can fit into one relatively small plastic box. So now instead of collecting a pile of physical shame I've bought a massive list of STL files that are just sitting on my hard drive, waiting for me to actually use them. Mind you that backlog will get bigger as soon as Dominion is available but let's not think about that.
You need a healthy purge. There’s way too much here that you will just never get to. And every month new stuff comes out. EBay and giveaways are your friend. Unload and free yourself from the chains, it’s very therapeutic I’ve done it twice myself and now have almost zero pile of shame.
The D&D Chainmail starter set was my first experience with miniatures as a kid, what a nostalgia trip. I did not expect to see them here, or anywhere for that matter!
I have like 15 unpainted minis and that alone stresses me out to the point of not being able to decide what to work on. Thankfully when I rejoined the hobby I went the 3d printing route so my backlog never jumps with big box buys. Thanks for the video!
It's taken me 3yrs to crunch through about 2,000 models - problem is when I started my pile of shame was only around 500 models. Fortunately it's now only 25, so it CAN be done... But, yeah FOMO is an issue.
I'm actually kicking ass on my pile this month! In the last couple weeks I've finished a Lady Olynder, knight of shrouds, 2 black coaches ( one plastic one metal), a unit of bladegheists , 4 of the easy build huants with glaives, the malign sorcery spells, and a tomb banshee ( the the bases all are unfinished I admit). Last night I built a Deimos command rhino for my Night Lords army along with some of the elite terminators and while the zenithal prime job is drying I'm on building some raptors and scouts as well.
im so glad that when prompted to search literally anything as an example on anything i'm using, i am not the only person to just search 'horse' and see where it takes me.
@@DanaHowl The thing I love about Frostgrave, Stargrave, and Infinity is you can add them all up and the cost is still less than one GW force. However, in the case of Frostgrave, you can still use those fantasy figures you have. Plus they are fun.
@@Space_Ranger Not to mention Grimdark Future: Firefight and Age of Fantasy: Skirmish. Then there's DnD, which always benefits from having small numbers of many different types of creatures. And there are SF variants of DnD or similar RPGs out there, for using the SF minis. Really, buying for Skirmish scale games is the way to go. It's easier to find people willing/able to play, there's less of an investment (time, money, labor), and if you end up not liking an army for whatever reason it's not as much of a waste.
Your rebel Star Wars folk look lovely! I hadn't seen them before. Good luck with painting all the rest :) I've started just giving stuff away... It's a lot quicker than painting.

Just bought my first models, ever. I promised myself not to buy anything else until I finish painting my current box. I should be done with my 2000 pt army by 2026.
@@Inquisitor_Vex A start collecting box for Age of Sigmar. After a month, I finished two models. I will have to adjust my completion time to around 2035.
This is good advice for me, with the impending release of the Dominion box. It contains so many sweet models... for two armies I don’t play, when I haven’t finished painting the two armies I DO want to play. Thanks Dana.
May I started back working on my pile of opportunity after I went overboard around Christmas. Started May with 592 minis, knocked out 23 minis. June is going slow almost done with 7 bikes. Gonna try and get two impulsors and 6 eradicators done before Thursday for a 1500 point game.
Enjoyment from buying and owning the figures, dreaming of armies and colour schemes yet to come is just as valid a reason for ownership as it is for actually playing games with them.
I have the same fear of missing out problem..so I really want to stay tuned for that golf related solution. Good luck getting through your miniature backlog!
I painted my pile of shame. It took a while. I think that the blisters with 3 figs back in the days where better in that sense that you wanted to build and paint when you came home. On the other hand I think the multipose/purpose boxed set was great. I will go back to buy models and play if GW bring back the Chaos Dwarfs in the "Old world"! until that I only paint warbands.
painted around 100 models this year. i stoped painting every troup unit like its the centerpiece and i stoped buying anything but the kill team boxes (i like the game, i play it often, i paint the stuff when i get it so its ok for me). the pile of shame gets smaller and smaller with every week and im feeling much better. i try to reach the point where i have no pile of shame. i want to buy a box and have nothing else on my to do list. sounds like a feeling of freedom :D
MY partner and I prefer to reference our pile as a pile of fun and options instead of shame. This works for us :) We set our personal goals and it works :) We do have a lot of minis though.
Don't we always think we "have it under control"? I've got an abundance of Privateer Press miniatures, Reaper Bones & Bones Black, 3-D printed minis from eBay, Enigma minis...not nearly as many as your pile of shame, but enough for me! And of course I'm always adding to the pile...those Chainmail minis look mighty appealing to me!
I cannot believe how much nostalgia I had just seeing those old Lord of the Ring's boxes. I think I'll have to dig around and find some of those minis to paint...
See I had a great idea. I would start a podcast and every episode show off the models I painted each month, So long as I have *an amount* then I'm good for that month. I never specified the number, so long as it's *some* it's fine. Your "oh wait there's more" also happened to me after I did a pile of Opportunity video, in that I found a box of airfix kits. They're certainly worth looking at since I own them, probably not to the meticulous detail that model kit builders go to, but I'll put some effort in.
It's nice to know that other people struggle with huge piles of grey plastic and pewter too... looking forward to miniature painting golf. Presumably, if we are painting weapons barrels we'll put a hole in one 😉
Lol, I'm in the same boat. My board game minis pushed me from ~2000 to almost 3000. And I specifically bought many of those boardgames for the minis. I have no intention of ever playing some of them. How bad is my problem? Unlike most people, I'm not very upset my Kickstarter projects are late. Each is probably 100-200 minis that I don't have to add to my total count just yet :-)
Dana, great video. I look forward to your version of backlog golf. However, as someone who barely makes videos due to how long they take to edit, please do not feel rushed on my behalf.
It's really weird to see so many people fall in to the same traps. Big limited boxes and rare or cheap ebay deals. I've decided to really take the axe to the backlog this year tho, which includes selling some projects that I'm not getting around to. Honestly, if I ever want to pick a project back up, you can find almost anything on ebay or whatever. I'm really hoping to see a one-year follow up!
Glances at my Circs 2005 Thousand sons Defiler that still isn't fully painted... Also at my Pike of Khador shame, My pile of Circle shame, My unpainted Space Hulk My Unpainted Battle master (which I don't plan to paint) and my 2 Unpainted Kill Teams My tau Team is currently the most complete of any "army" I own that I plan to keep (I plan to sell the Thousand sons force) All that is unpainted for Tau is the 3 Crisis Suits from the Start collecting which I didn't have plans to use in KT at present. if you do count the thousand sons they become the most painted So TS > Tau > Circle > Khador > Alpha Legion KT > SM KT > Board game minis is the order of paintedness among my mini collections.
I try to keep my backlog from getting out of control by tracking how much I spend on models vs. how much I sell models for (when I sell them) and the MSRP (or an estimate) of models when I finish painting them. If those numbers stay close, I tell myself, I'm not buying more than I'm painting. I've got 5 years' worth of that data and... I did a pretty good job in 2020! I'm not in 2021!
I’d love to see some videos on how you paint your legion models! I think it would be super interesting to see how you balance canon looks with your bright and fantastical style
i have as much in my pile of shame as you, but i had to ditch all the boxes to save space. a lot of GW metal, inc the 1987 golden demon figure, ill get around to it one day, over 1200 painted figures too :)
I recently started collecting LEGO with my son, and there are sets I want but less than others, problem is I know I need to buy sets that are going out of production first at the cost of having to wait for the stuff I really want most.
Nice video, was cool so see your many projects and I'm intrigued to hear about your game! Hehe all I can say about FOMO is Guy from Midwinter tried to keep his pile of shame down and a year later bought a 6'2 space marine so yeh, watch for the rebound haha
Lol I had 3/4 of wardrobe full of unpainted models. Mainly historical. When I moved to the US I had to severely cut them down & sell a lot of it. I did bring a fair few with me & it's more under control. Either that or my will kill me.
I have no idea how many I have, but I wouldn't be surprised if my mountain of opportunity (I refuse to attach shame to something I love) was pretty comparable. I will say this though; I have painted far more minis so far this year than I did all of 2020, and I've also painted more this year than I have purchased.
In an episode of SATC, Carrie has been told she is undesirable for a loan, and she asks Miranda where is gone all the money she made. And Miranda, holding a shoe, says: - 400 bucks a pair, how many of these do you have? 10? - A hundred. - Well, a hundred times 400, there is your money. - Oh my god, I´ve spent 40.000 on shoes?! Yep, that dialogue use to come to my mind when I look at my pile of shame.
I've been trying something similar to the Backlog Golf idea, (painted + Sold) - Minis purchased. I'm going to attempt to get it to Zero, then keep it above! I've got a ways to go, though!

oh I'd love to see your take on retro Tau! you could do that justice for real
Dana, great video. I look forward to your version of backlog golf. However, as someone who barely makes videos due to how long they take to edit, please do not feel rushed on my behalf.
those chainmail sets really take me back.
the tau boxes look amazing, i would love to paint these in the classic paint scheme
FOMO is absolute hell, I feel you on that.
The last church is a must see 😱😱 40k
It's really weird to see so many people fall in to the same traps. Big limited boxes and rare or cheap ebay deals. I've decided to really take the axe to the backlog this year tho, which includes selling some projects that I'm not getting around to. Honestly, if I ever want to pick a project back up, you can find almost anything on ebay or whatever.
I'm really hoping to see a one-year follow up!
I'm also working on the complete chainmai miniatures set. The promo ones are really hard to find.
Glances at my Circs 2005 Thousand sons Defiler that still isn't fully painted...
Also at my Pike of Khador shame, My pile of Circle shame, My unpainted Space Hulk
My Unpainted Battle master (which I don't plan to paint)
and my 2 Unpainted Kill Teams
My tau Team is currently the most complete of any "army" I own that I plan to keep (I plan to sell the Thousand sons force)
All that is unpainted for Tau is the 3 Crisis Suits from the Start collecting which I didn't have plans to use in KT at present.
if you do count the thousand sons they become the most painted
So
TS > Tau > Circle > Khador > Alpha Legion KT > SM KT > Board game minis
is the order of paintedness among my mini collections.
I am and have been a huge fan of Star Wars since 1977 and am also a big fan of Space Marines
I'm soooo much looking forward to seeing you paint your Empire army for the Tale of the Six Warlords 😍
Great video and I too have the same FOMO problem. Will need a bigger living space at some point - oh well - that's life.
I love your necron color scheme.
That Tau set was the first warhammer i owned, really excited for that video for the nostalgia!
I also want to build my chainmail collection. A had built a few but they usually need some serious gap filling.
Finally someone in my realms of numbers.
I counted mine lately and felt relieved now that there are people that have way more😂
Great music choices and editing, looking forward to the hobby backlog gamification video.
Oh wow, I'm in awe of that Chainmail collection - it's a pretty cool range! Your Star Wars Legion stuff is awesome too
i have as much in my pile of shame as you, but i had to ditch all the boxes to save space. a lot of GW metal, inc the 1987 golden demon figure, ill get around to it one day, over 1200 painted figures too :)
I recently started collecting LEGO with my son, and there are sets I want but less than others, problem is I know I need to buy sets that are going out of production first at the cost of having to wait for the stuff I really want most.
The art on those old Tau boxes
Nice video, was cool so see your many projects and I'm intrigued to hear about your game! Hehe all I can say about FOMO is Guy from Midwinter tried to keep his pile of shame down and a year later bought a 6'2 space marine so yeh, watch for the rebound haha
So many cool box sets such a great collection. Excited for the mini golf backlog video
My count is probably around 1000 after Reaper Bones V arrives.
I am excited for the backlog golf video. I'll wait rather than google it.
Looking forward to the golf video!!
In an episode of SATC, Carrie has been told she is undesirable for a loan, and she asks Miranda where is gone all the money she made. And Miranda, holding a shoe, says:
- 400 bucks a pair, how many of these do you have? 10?
- A hundred.
- Well, a hundred times 400, there is your money.
- Oh my god, I´ve spent 40.000 on shoes?!
Yep, that dialogue use to come to my mind when I look at my pile of shame.
i mean...im kinda speechless...but in a good way. Get paintin!!!!! :)
Man I'm 100% in to see Dana do some LorR MESBG content
I love when youtubers show their pile of shame. Makes mine look like nothing, and my conscius is clear🤣
I would love to have some of the Space Marines
I've been trying something similar to the Backlog Golf idea, (painted + Sold) - Minis purchased. I'm going to attempt to get it to Zero, then keep it above! I've got a ways to go, though!
