This was the only Super bowl where one runner Csonka dominated the super bowl.Csonka was a unique man of pure ruggedness, atheltic ability and strength.8 yards here 10 yards there on a 3rd down csonka would get 12 yards it was unbelievable.

There has been a quite a few great performances… Emmitt Smith at one point somewhat took over the game and his runs meant a lot ….how about Marcus Allen? How about Franco Harris? And there was a Sunday that a relatively little known (played with Washington )had a major impact …not too many people remember that?I can think of one other power runner with Washington had a big game… now that I think of it Riggins

Larry Csonka was the best inside power runner in NFL history! He weighed 239 during the late sixties and early seventies. There's no other back I'd want for 3rd and two or three.

    • @jefferyroy2566

Zonk was about a case of bottled beer lighter than your average O-linemen in the early 70s. You can imagine a proportionately-sized player now, 300 lbs. of bad attitude who was quick into hole and for another 10 yards if it was there. It hasn't been tried recently for obvious reasons: Athletic O-linemen are more valuable than running backs and are paid accordingly. In that grind-it-out era, passing dropped off significantly and points followed suit. Why? We're looking at the team, and its most consistent rusher, which explains why the league turned in that strategic direction. This turn lasted just six seasons, but it was fun to watch when it was your team leading the way.

As a football lover, I had heard of Czonka, but didn't quite know where his fame lay. As a Seahawks fan who has watched Marshawn Lynch abuse opposing defenses, I finally understand Czonka. He was a battering ram, a promise of pain. For a power back, the objective isn't always to pick up yardage-- it's often just to inflict wear and tear on the defense. By the 4th Q, when the opposing defense is huffing and puffing, new opportunities on offense arise. The grinding and pounding never shows up on the stat sheet, so power backs will never get the respect they deserve. But as Czonka showed, they influence the game on the most fundamental level-- hitting and being hit, driving forward inch by inch.

Zonk is the only running back to be flagged for unnecessary roughness while carrying the ball. And there was no one on the 72 team who was mediocre. I can still name them all. Dallas came close to being as good under Jimmy Johnson but came up a little short. When asked who was the best team in football history I always reply, what team was undefeatable in any season. The most efficient path from point A to point B is a straight line. You didn't have to risk all that goes with passing the ball. You could just give it to Csonka between the tackles. He only fumbled 21 times in 11 seasons. Its no wonder he was a key factor in the perfect 1972 Miami Dolphins.

For years all my game programs listed him as 6'3 and 237. He sure looked much bigger than that...assuming the offensive tackles where the 250 or 260 they where listed as. By comparison, he was ussually was one of the biggest guys on the field I always though.
As far as runnubg over people, just pulverizing an opponent. No one comes close. Earls Campbell was also tough, Riggins was too. But none where the run-over -people-type like Csonka.

The first guy to touch Csonka paid the price at the receiving end of his forearm. Defensive players used to say that Csonka was the size of a lineman. I watched him live at the Orange Bowl throughout the 70s and he was the most punishing running back of his time. Defensive backs stood little chance in bringing him down without first being dragged for five yards or more.

I have been a Miami Dolphin fan since 1969, so I wrote a letter to NFL FILMS asking how the dolphins could lose the "dream bowl" , no answer back. so I came up with my own theory, I asked them was it because they did not have enough footage of Miami wearing there aqua uniforms against the Steelers, remember, the Steelers wore all white unis against Miami in the 1971 game when Paul Warfield caught 3 td's against the Steelers, so they could not use the footage, same in 1973 on the Monday night game, Steelers pants were yellow!

the thing about Larry is he really wanted punish his tacklers. he wanted them to be afraid of him. He had the physical talent, the mentality and the durability. Jim Kiick, who was his half-back and a very talented player, said he was suprised he ended up blocking for his full-back! the two of them were dedicated and would play 100% on the field, injuries and all. the Dolphins perfect season immortalized the team and made every player a house-hold word. they deserved it. Don Shula made the team what it was and their season of excellence ... The most eye-catching thing was watching Paul Warfield seemingly glide downfield for perfect receptions.

There are some measures that are definitive, i.e. when Jim Brown retired he was the all-time leading rusher, which meant that when it came to running for yards he was the best ever at that time.
Also, there are different classes of bruiser, and Campbell may be at the top of that. But Jim Brown was indeed known for running people over and he did it every week. The only reason he didn't do it as much is because he had incredible speed and spent more time running away from defenders.

I go to the same school he went to Stow, Ohio (Stow Bulldogs). My dad told me in 1 game where the opponents stud MLB said he was gona lay Csonka out, 1st play. First play is a run up the middle, and the MLB comes through the gap, they're both low, Csonka rams his elbow into the guys helmet, which cuts the guy's head open and knocks him out cold lol. Awesome to know I go to the same school as an all-time great.

Saw that 73' NFC Championship Game when I was 12, also have the NFL Films version. Even though Calvin Hill was out, Lilly played sparingly and Staubacch had a bad arm, this was one of the Vikings most superb victories ever. No one can say it was because the sub- zero weather in Metropolitan Stadium. They went down there as a 3 point underdog and took it to the Cowboys from the very 1st drive.

Mostly agree. When it comes to running for yards,Brown is the man,at least back then. Even today his yrd per rush IS still the record ( 5 point something ?? )
Although he could bowl over people, Brown was'nt known as a bruiser.Your assesement on his speed is right,he could out run people.
Never the less, using whatever criteria, Csonka did steam roll tacklers irregardless. Can you think of one man so busting up an entire defense, like Csonka did to the Vikings in SBVIII ??

Mr. csonka was upset at NFL FILMS because in the late 80's they came up with the "dream season" , where all time great teams would play each other, well the championship game had the 72 dolphins playing the 78 Steelers, and a computer had the 78 Steelers winning. Csonka was very upset about it.

Absolutely NO OBJECTIVITY used by either of them.
