U2 always seems to find new ways to reinvent the power of their best ever song. Bullet just keeps getting more and more powerful as the years go by. The Edge's tone here is just incredible.
The insertion of the lyrics which adds the conflict/struggle between young and old Bono is awesome. It basically aims to capture, or at least show recognition, that as you get older you may have the same aims but your manner of doing so may be wholly different. He doesn't apologize for his status now, but he's also trying to use it for the same original aims. You can disagree with the method, you can disagree with the aims, you can say it's just theater because he's rich, but at least you have to appreciate him attempting to articulate his own personal conflict.
In my opinion one of the best versions, that I have had the pleasure of hearing her twice live. In PopMart and Vertigo. The version of Zoo TV Age, is incredible, but it is one thing that the Zoo TV has, this version is scary, terror, passes the image of hopelessness which we live. Time passes, but certain songs remain strong.
Agreed!! I luv how he always changes the meaning of the "100! 200! 300! part in every tour, like it fits in with whatever is going in the world in that period

James Cranefield if u look at the interview Bono did regarding this song he says while writing it he had Edge pout into it to make it sound like a war zone. u all need to watch that I review. I see where he's coming from.
There is no more powerful song than "Bullet the blue sky" to shout out all the crap we encounter in this world. Year after year, again and again. A constant kick in the ass of the society that really needs it as it seems. This needs to reach a lot more people.
+toasybutter 334 You are in for a bit of a treat then because once you start the voyage of discovery with U2; it just goes on and on. They have so many brilliant songs.
Larry Mullen jr was very critical of bonos hob knobbing with blair and bush. he is a very quiet guy. he is the boss. he formed the band in his late dads kitchen. but they are very equal. in terms of song writing, creative input etc. and financial matters. so if something happens to one member the band is finished.
Overhangs of what you ask. The political footprint? The footprint rock seventies? Other than that after this music we have One, Beautiful Day, Kite. And if we jump to the last album we Raised By Wolves, Like Baby Tonight which in my opinion are so great modern music. Now masterpieces, as is (bullet), even big bands have not so much. But I would say that if a band will get a masterpiece in the coming years, I bet my horses in U2.
Another problem in the classical bands today is that they can not even make new songs reasonable and not play the old hits with the same power of the time. And in this regard U2 goes against all the old songs still hard and new are mostly acceptable. So much so that the band is rare in active with the original line and still giving media for its made present and not the past. The secret may be looking forward and not back, even the fans do not like so much.
The last album is brilliant, seen live the songs and the show is stunning. First time I had ever seen then and was not disappointed. Also find out what the songs are about, the cover up of a car bomb in Dublin in the '70's. Child abuse by a Catholic priest and so on. The lyrics make the songs.
*groan* Layered-on too thick here. The original album version is top-notch. I really prefer Joel Wasserstein's bar mitzvah version as far as live performances go. That one gave me shivers AND goosebumps.
It was the fourth cut from their Joshua Tree album, which is also their top selling album. Never officially released as a single, though I'm fairly certain some rock radio stations played it enough where it charted. It's always been super popular live! Poke around on here for performances from the ZOOTV, PopMart, Elevation (both Boston and Slane Castle), and Vertigo tours. (ZOOTV is the best, imo.)
Yes, that was the original context of the song, especially the spoken part. Under Ronald Reagan, the US role in El Salvador was to back the Death Squads of the right wing regime at the same time as the US was backing the right wing Contras against the left wing Sandinista government of nearby Nicaragua. The phrase in the spoken part of the song, "outside it's America", referred to the US influence on internal politics in El Salvador. However, the above version turns the spoken part into an argument with a radical youth who sees Bono as "part of the problem, not the solution", which could refer to Bono's more recent role in trying to influence word leaders from within the elite and/or to U2's tax affairs in Ireland. Either way, "outside it's America" does not appear to refer to Obama's influence on Middle Eastern affairs, even though his administration has dropped far more bombs on the Middle East than Reagan did worldwide during his two terms. But that's how liberals like Bono seem to play it: rage against the US when the GOP are in the White House but stay quiet when the Democrats have power.

Perfect encapsulation of the lyrics. They are so powerful, the way he is questioning himself. I've never heard this version, it is amazing.

A political song that condemns US foreign policy. Written about the United States' military intervention during the 1980s in the Salvadoran Civil War.
Important point, well done if youre right, I just figured it had more reference to Ireland and Britain.
Yes, that was the original context of the song, especially the spoken part. Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome.
You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire.
We see them burnin' crosses
See the flames, higher and higher.
Woh, woh, bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue.
Suit and tie comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush
And he's peelin' off those dollar bills

One hundred, two hundred.

It’s actually a self deprecating speech, he’s talking about himself and how much he’s changed, and how his younger self would see his older self
