The safety and well-being of their soldiers should be paramount to any company commander. Major 'Chuckles' seems to understand that notion very well as well as having pride in his 'boys'. Every parent of a soldier should feel blessed if their son has a commander like that.

      Hi

  • @ukraine7249
    @ukraine7249 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

My first tour was physically exhausting but exciting.
My second tour was Iraq and I had a new born son and wife. Literally ten minutes after arriving in theatre incoming, guns blazing. That was the pattern ten times a day for months.
I never really came home (mentally) my marriage broke down, drank more and more in the Mess. Threw myself into work. Couldn’t stand being around my wife and son, not because I didn’t love them, but because I couldn’t really that feel love. I became numb.
    Would I swop my life?
    No……
The misery, fear, grief and exposure to extremes of life shape you as a person.
What I lost I also gained. Memories of the lads, that bond.
I’m recovering my ability to feel more emotional again.
Eventually discharged after 21 years with CPTSD
Lost a few friends to war, many more with missing limbs and suicide
Watching this made me so proud of the young men that volunteer for this life changing experience.
I served with 4 rifles as Patrick Sanders battle group engineer recce/advisor.
They lost 9 men, many more injured.

I did 25 years in the Canadian army (infantry my whole career) my last tour was 2007 in Kandahar, and what I remember was getting off the bus, greeting my wife and daughter so gratefully, yet the next day missing my buddies.

I don't usually pay attention to military documenteries. I am however, an ex Canadian soldier so recently started paying closer attention to the commonwealths ( l include Canada still) efforts abroad. I have never been to Afghanistan but have been wounded a few times in other conflicts in the past. I just wanted to say as did "Chuckles" not to underestimate our youth. God bless our fallen! And those that grieve for them.

Hat's off to any and all point-men. It's a tough job with lots of responsibility with little recognition. I've read that NCO's and officers (at least with the US Army) would look at backgrounds of soldiers and single out the ones from rural areas with a history of hunting as point-men. Like Darren, they could spot something that wasn't natural.

When I did my basic with the Scots Guards in 86 only 25 per cent passed out the rest got binned injured or just jacked because of the bullshit . Today looking back I think at least half of them would have passed if only they had the right mental attitude . A lot of it was down to discipline and if you can't hack it in the barrack blockyou won't hack it on the battlefield, sad but true and that was the defining factor . I hated every second of it but the thing what kept me going was don't let the bastards drag you down.

What got you through being piss-wet through on exercise or training?
I know my experience was only in the TA (4WFR) Infantry (88-92), but what got me through was the thought of being able to get out of the wet kit and into nice clean, dry kit. I did 4 years and would have loved to have joined the regulars but I failed on medical grounds, which really pissed me off as I aced the other tests.
While I was in, I did 2 courses, GPMG(SF) and Assault Pioneer (loved both), I was fit lower body, but my upper needed some work and I was a great shot with the SLR.

The British have fought 3 major campaigns Afghanistan during the British Raj days. More than a century later, the Britain are sending its mostly young men to fight another latest campaign and so far have lost more than 300 soldiers after more than a decade in Afghanistan. All this blood and toil is really for what ? To destroy AL Qaeda or the Talibans? The former been chased out while the latter remains a threat even after billions were spent to prop up a reliable govt. in Afghanistan.
